I was one of the people who felt that oil was too much work and materials. You’ve opened my eyes so thank you so much for this!

@@rosiew4260 I'm pointing out double standards. Men make comments like that and get accused of all sorts. I know sometimes it's warranted, sometimes not, but the point stands. It's impossible to compliment anything about anyone these days without being attacked, I'm just holding up a mirror.
I started with linseed oil as a medium and soap + warm water to clean the brushes... and it works completely perfectly. So guys if you have doubts on what to use ... keep it simple (: but paint and paint and paint so you become better
I've been painting with oils, acrylics & watercolors for years - - I love them all but like advantage of oils staying wet - I often paint first with acrylics because it drys quickly and allows me to lay in a quicker background before painting the main subject in oils (like birds for example).
You did a fantastic job of taking the fear out of oil painting. I always thought it was super complicated but you really broke down why that’s not true. Definitely going to watch all your instructional videos now, thanks!
everyone has to start somewhere. mine is the same as yours. the most frustrating part was mixing the right color on the subject. i had done a large mural 55' x 78' on John the Baptist baptizing Jesus in Jordan River. it took me two years to complete. there were so many redid to make the scene look alive. many painting i had seen in museums depict John pour water on top of Jesus' head with hyssop. it was a full submersion according to the KJV; sorry to say while on the mission trip to China, my church lost this painting. now i'm more than ever determined to do two oil paintings, one on same John the Baptist baptizing Jesus and the other Last Supper while the twelve disciples were reclining dining with Jesus on the night of his betray by Judas. the painting in Venice done by Michael Angelo showed them sitting, disciples should be reclining as scripture stated. let's hope i 'll get these two finished less than two years if the Lord tarry
How wonderful it is to just strive to create something beautiful, not for money or recognition, all those millions of paintbrushes and the minds behind driving their creative goal.
I've watched many oil painting demonstrations on UA-cam, but yours is one of the best, by far. It is really helpful to see how you prepared the paint, and your mixing, application, and blending techniques. Maybe I'll be able to overcome anxiety and actually start painting something now. Thank you for the comprehensive demonstration.
Getting started is the first challenge, the next one is going to be to know when to stop. Like many artists, you'll soon be cursed not knowing when you can call a painting finished but that's normal.
As someone about to start his first oil painting, as an absolute novice, I have to thank you for such a clear and helpful video, I've found it super helpful and incredibly informative - great work!
Ive been acrylic painting for a few years. I just enrolled in an online art school and after watching this magical video I'm afraid I may be in over my head. Having a lot of doubts about this level of skill.
Have recently converted to oils from acrylic... I find that by using alkyds I can do my dry work the very next morning. Also, with these (alkyd) products, I’m painting in a similar way to acrylic and rarely worry about “fat over thin”. But, most importantly, I don’t have the frustration of seeing a much darker painting in the morning than the one I was looking at the night before, which was my frustration with acrylics! Another important advantage is being able to take my time when working wet-on-wet, the slower drying time makes blending so much easier and my paintings are much better (to my eye at least) for that. Have just subscribed to your channel, you have a very clear and concise way of teaching...much appreciated.
My first and only painting medium was oil in college and my biggest challenge is building up the image. My former technique was once I got my sketch together I would put so much paint on the canvas and start blending lol you can imagine how much paint I used (and money I spent). Seeing you used so little amount of paint on your palette the whole time and the layering technique showed me something I would like to do with new paintings. This video was so helpful.
Thank you so much ! Indeed, I often say that controlling the quantity of pigment on your brush (and on your canvas of course) is the key to painting. It's a subtle balance but it comes with time.
A really informative video, thank you. I haven't painted or drawn for about 15 years, but started again In the last couple of weeks. There are many stages in the demonstration where I would have been happy to call it finished, but you really get a sense how you build up the final image through your video. Each process really adds something. Incredible. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent.
This is a comprehensive and fantastic overview of the core things to know about oil paint. I was especially happy to hear about not using solvents - and that you clean brushes with soap and water. Forent is brilliant in his delivery, warmth, kindness and elegance of spirit.
I've seen a lot of oil painting tutorials on UA-cam, but yours is by far one of the best. It is quite beneficial to observe how you mixed, applied, and blended the paint as well as how you prepared it. Maybe I'll be able to get past my fear and begin painting right away. I appreciate the thorough demonstration. I've recently developed a passion for oil painting, so it's wonderful that you have videos on it. I like your talent and dedication. I literally watched your paint step by step and still at the end I was like, "how the hell did he do that?"
thank you so much for a very comprehensive lecture and demonstration. now i am more raring to start with my new challenge, painting, and to think that i am already an elderly enthusiast at age 67. as they say in the Philippines--"Maraming Salamat, Florent!' --which means: Thank You so much, Florentt!
I've always been interested in art. But I haven't had any professional experience about oil painting. Hahaha. 100%. What if I'm more into cubist crap? I just want to take a shit on top of a canvas and call it art really. Do I need to go through the 10,000 hour process? That doesn't sound very artistic to be honest. Real art is shit so fucking painful to go through, that it ruins your life. Unfortunately millionaires assign a multimillion dollar value to the ruin of the somebody's inner soul. They have literally monetized people's insanity. This guy's content is good I must admit - he knows his shit. But the reason why he will never be Picasso, is because he has enough time in his hands to create a UA-cam channel.
@@Ronam0451 your reply makes zero sense. Drawing an eye isnt for skilled artists. It's something most artists learn to do. It doesnt even need to be photo realistic, just proportioned correctly. If you havent learned anatomy and art rules then you should try a different medium like regular drawing before oil painting
Love oil paint. But took me years to re-discover it again as when I first started using oil paint I had no idea what I was doing and I gave up. But over the years I had a hunger to try it again. This time I had more experience and needed a new challenge lol
Just purchased my first oils and have to wait a week for delivery (lockdown). I've tried acrylic before but it dries way too quick. Because of being insecure, all the Old Holland oil painting stuff I bought is under my bed for 1,5 years now... After watching your I am going to get it and finally start...something. Thanks for your inspiring video and clear explanation.
Thank you, very informative presentation, I had the exact 'fears' you mentioned. For years I stayed with acrylics, now I am ready to pick up a paintbrush again I will give oils a try with your guidance and encouragement.
Thank you! I just got oil paints for Christmas. I’m not a painter, but painting seems like something l would love to do because of how much I love colors and swatches of any type of pigmentation. It seems like something cool that I won’t be able to pull off 🤷🏻♀️
I have done water colouring and also pencil sketching . But now this oil painting is more addictive to me ..so I am searching here and there to know the basics ..and finally got you...thank you ❤️for this video
I had few oil paintings for last twenty years that I painted with my teachers and the colors are so fixed still with so vibrant and vivid . Very consistent. But they are more costly than the rest.... of course there are no comparisons . I could not do the eyes like you did it looks so real and deep. Portrait are fascinating but so hard to accomplish it right and realistic look. Thank you for your tutorial . You are absolutely great. Hope to learn more from your great artistic mind.🙏👍🎈🎉
One day I'll come back to thank You when I'll be able to paint with oil colors without being stressed about the solvent mediums. Started from water color's and now moving towards oil colors.
This was exactly what I needed. I am primarily a watercolor painter and wanted to refresh on the basics of oil paints and supplies, and your video was the most well made and informative one I've seen. I appreciate it very much, thank you! :)
been watching a lot of tutorials for oil painting BUT THIS IS THE BEST. I love how you didnt talk the whole time and chose to use captions. I love how you showed the palette and the painting. THANKYOU
Me too, I am in awe of the medium; the colours and scenery looks so vibrant. You can include so much details!! Watercolour is great, but oil painting is just another level!!
The way you explain and demonstrate is on point. Moving around the canvas makes it easier to be quicker and to avoid becoming overly hyper-focused. Oil is special because, when applied properly, it leaves a beautiful texture.
Extremely helpful!!!!! You definitely have a passion for painting! I am currently a highschool student studying art who has been hesitant in using oil paint for months up until now. Thank you so much for this lesson!
I've been trying to get back into painting. I wanted to do it right this time. I've been watching sooo many videos and this made more sense than all of the others combined. Not only do you show everything but give a clear demo. Thank you ❤

i was painting digital for last three years. and today i bought canvas, 3 brushes, tiny set of cheap oil paints and some solvent. forget about palette knife, but i think i'll manage it somehow. your video was first i watched before even unpacking all this stuff. and i think you said enough for me to overcome my fear and start to paint =) thanks
Your videos are so inspiring and helpful! I’m a fairly experienced artist using mostly watercolors, pen/ink, and gouache, and I’ve been scared to try oils. At almost 50 years old, I’m finally trying it out, and I think you for helping me understand that oils aren’t as toxic and terrifying as I always thought! ❤

Thanks so much for you help and putting all you info on there.............. ive been on a dry spell.. i haven't painted or drawn in a while. about 7 month.. but my new years rez is to pick it back up. and i have but it being that long it like learning all over again. i got a lot of work to do im into portraits. and the other day i couldn't even get my proportions downright and it made me just stop.. because it blow me away how much i lost in that time.. i use to lay down a portrait in no time. at least proportions and blocked in... i guess i just need to stick to it hard and push threw an not give up... { like they say it"s easier to give up, than to push threw and keep going and not give up... But thanks so much for everything you do .....Thanks so much Brian B
Wacky2baccyGrower hey I’ve been there. The thing that helps me is to step back from what I’m trying to do, and go for something simpler, like sketching or maybe landscapes are easy for you. Then of course when you’ve built up your confidence again and you’re on a roll, go for the portrait. Im also a portrait painter. Try it!
This was a fabulous instructional video and answered a lot of questions as I have been painting mainly acrylics and water colors. Yet, I’m ready to try oil painting. Will look for other videos. Amazing talent!
Just amazing from start to finish! You have definitely made experimenting with oil painting a lot more comfortable and cannot wait to watch more of your videos!
Up until last year I hated painting I didn't feel I was good at it and just never had any inspiration to paint. I eventually started to come around to it but ive never been happy with my paintings as they always feel off. Recently I've been looking into what my art style is as it genuanlly fluctuates but I have found oil paintings seen to be what I'm drawn to about 95% of the time. I've only ever worked with acrylics as I've never been taught anything other than that in school nor since I started college, oil painting always seen to have more life and emotion so I'm hoping to try it and hopefully be motivated enougth to practice and get good at using oil paints so I can become more confident in my art!!! This video has really helped me have a better understanding of everything and now im even more excited to use oil paints in the future and hopefully use them for future college work instead of acrylics!!
The BEST video I’ve seen on the subject! I’ve seen many. You explain WELL, direct and clear. And this demo was amazinnng. I don’t have enough words. I’ll just buy new brushes and try oil. I love portraits and I think it might just be the best medium for it. Thank you! CONGRATS on your talent.
I started painting a little a couple of years ago (I am now 64). Then some water colors. I am far from an artist! But I play guitar and I ordered an inexpensive guitar to modify and paint. I would like to use oil of course. I would like to paint a tree with green leaves. Can you recommend a video, link or anything to help me with my project? Thank you very much!
Juan Carlos Lopez not even sure if oil is applicable in this situation, it takes 6-9 months for it to dry completely on canvas so I can’t imagine a surface like a guitar, especially since you’d need to prime it very heavily. Acrylic paint would be the best option, it’s made to be used on most any surface and you can use soap and water to clean it off at any time before you varnish or finish it with a spray/medium.
I agree with Paislee’s comment. Stay clear of oil for your project! The oil paint will not stick to a treated, pressed & lacquered wood, even if sanded I would be concerned the oil would peel right off. It is not the type of paint for your project. Acrylic paint though, sticks to everything, look in the craft section of your local art store, MICHAELS for instance, small 2oz containers, is what you’re looking for. Brands such as Americana and their off-brand, DecoArt, are the best a well as Folkart. The variety in colors is exceptional, with good pricing, you’ll be able to paint your tree as a non-artist using colors directly out of the tubes without fussing to create your own colors which is a process. Adding dimension and shading to the trunk and leaves using already made colors will be task enough but a fun project non the less. Keep in mind that acrylic paint dries quickly which may work in your favor but should you want to work wet on wet brands such as Golden and Liquitex make a medium that you add to the paints that will increase the “open” time of the paints = the time the paint stays wet. I suggest you purchase a small canvas, do a test run on it first before committing to working wet on wet or wet over dry and get a feel for both. There is an artist by the name of The Art Sherpa on you tube I recommend checking out. She works with acrylics, does fun projects, she has several hundred, if not a thousand, videos. Scrolling through you may find a few that give you pointers. She has created a few tutorials on painting trees. Best of luck!
Thank you for sharing !! This is amazing! I just got an oil painting starter kit for christmas and now I am even more excited to get started! Thank you for your guidance 🙏🏼

Don't objectify people! He's talking about painting, not on show for your viewing pleasure.
atrtsh she’s not, she’s complimenting him. she means he’s got a nice personality so it’s easier to take advice from him
@@rosiew4260 I'm pointing out double standards. Men make comments like that and get accused of all sorts. I know sometimes it's warranted, sometimes not, but the point stands. It's impossible to compliment anything about anyone these days without being attacked, I'm just holding up a mirror.
atrtsh bruh it’s really not that deep. she gave him a compliment, that’s it💀
@@atrtsh Eye for an eye and the whole world go blind
You seem like such a lovely, warm-hearted person. Thank you for this helpful video!
You are right, the way he talks and his facial movements indicate he is warm-hearted.
As you paint that eye, it’s like you are painting on all the memories from the person’s life. Wonderful.
Hope I can improve my style in painting

You did a fantastic job of taking the fear out of oil painting. I always thought it was super complicated but you really broke down why that’s not true. Definitely going to watch all your instructional videos now, thanks!
I did my first oil painting for school, it looks awful, but you inspired me and I would like to try again!
everyone has to start somewhere. mine is the same as yours. the most frustrating part was mixing the right color on the subject. i had done a large mural 55' x 78' on John the Baptist baptizing Jesus in Jordan River. it took me two years to complete. there were so many redid to make the scene look alive. many painting i had seen in museums depict John pour water on top of Jesus' head with hyssop. it was a full submersion according to the KJV; sorry to say while on the mission trip to China, my church lost this painting. now i'm more than ever determined to do two oil paintings, one on same John the Baptist baptizing Jesus and the other Last Supper while the twelve disciples were reclining dining with Jesus on the night of his betray by Judas. the painting in Venice done by Michael Angelo showed them sitting, disciples should be reclining as scripture stated. let's hope i 'll get these two finished less than two years if the Lord tarry
Have the Disciples hanging out on La-Z-Boy recliners!

Great video and fantastic approach to sharing! Je vous remercie
Great video.
And tips for painting in winter?
Florent Farges - arts Very clear and concise video. Loved it
How wonderful it is to just strive to create something beautiful, not for money or recognition, all those millions of paintbrushes and the minds behind driving their creative goal.
I’ve just started learning oil painting today and this is so satisfying to watch! Thank you for all the tips ! 😊
I'm glad you felt inspired, how has the journey been?
Did someone notice his orating skills
I've watched many oil painting demonstrations on UA-cam, but yours is one of the best, by far. It is really helpful to see how you prepared the paint, and your mixing, application, and blending techniques. Maybe I'll be able to overcome anxiety and actually start painting something now. Thank you for the comprehensive demonstration.
Getting started is the first challenge, the next one is going to be to know when to stop. Like many artists, you'll soon be cursed not knowing when you can call a painting finished but that's normal.
Thank you for your reply! I will try to paint something today. :)

You are such a brilliant teacher. Lots of love from the UK
Thank you very much !! Love from France :)
Florent Farges - arts excellent advice
I feel like that's exactly what I'm doing lol
A really informative video, thank you. I haven't painted or drawn for about 15 years, but started again In the last couple of weeks. There are many stages in the demonstration where I would have been happy to call it finished, but you really get a sense how you build up the final image through your video. Each process really adds something. Incredible. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent.
I am already aghast at beginning the oil painting . This guy is soothing the way he teaches calms down my nerves. I am grateful for this video.
How did it go? I'm 58, with no experience of making art, but I really want to give it a go!
Im getting insecure about starting painting with oil paint when I see his talent
I've always been interested in art. But I haven't had any professional experience about oil painting. Then I started to search "How to start oil paintings" on youtube, I saw this video and I liked him very much. He tells us his methods with his smiling face and amazing presentation. Thank you very much. I'm lucky to find this channel and I hope I will start to paint.

"Here's how to do oil painting, an easy tutorial for absolute beginners" *proceeds to paint a photorealistic eye*
If you cant draw an eye you probably have other things to learn before oil painting
Hahaha.
@@skunker666 I've seen many people who can't do an eye painting. Your reply makes no sense
@@skunker666 what if the guy wants to paint a tree? Let him do what he wants, stop trying to tell people what to do.
Love oil paint. But took me years to re-discover it again as when I first started using oil paint I had no idea what I was doing and I gave up. But over the years I had a hunger to try it again. This time I had more experience and needed a new challenge lol
Great stuff ! It is challenging at first, but you have to push through. Once you get the technical and practical stuff, it becomes very natural.

Just purchased my first oils and have to wait a week for delivery (lockdown). I've tried acrylic before but it dries way too quick. I can't wait to have the freedom to paint and take my time for the first time.
This video has taught me a huge amount and I can't wait to get going. Great video at a great speed. Thank you so much for sharing your skills, it's really appreciated.

Happy to inspire you to pick up the paint ✨🎨👍let me know how it goes!
It seems like something cool that I won’t be able to pull off 🤷🏻♀️

them: oil painting is scary
me: oil paint is hella expensive, and I can't art for shit

Me too, I am in awe of the medium; the colours and scenery looks so vibrant. You can include so much details!! Watercolour is great, but oil painting is just another level!!
What is the medium
This inspired me to actually take my oil painting seriously. Thank you.
Just fell in love with this technique, I feel so inspired ♥️
The way you explain and demonstrate is on point. Moving around the canvas makes it easier to be quicker and to avoid becoming overly hyper-focused. Oil is special because, when applied properly, it leaves a beautiful texture.
Finally a beginners guide that the is not a faced paced talk fast video. Excellent instruction...

God bless you! This was so helpful. I hope all is well.
Simply thank you .. i just came across ur video and just know that u inspired thousands of ppl ...and i'm one of them so thank you
