    Thanks for your thoughts. I was looking for this to be a gel medium I could use with my water mixable oils like I normally use neo megilp. Only with the W, i would not need to bring OMS when traveling.

      I'd say it depends a little bit on how long you're traveling. Personally I wouldn't utilize oils beyond two weeks even with the medium

    They make the same medium in liquid vs gel in larger containers. I find I like the liquid version better. As some one that doesn't want to use solvents/extra oils. Also the recommendation I've seen is 2 part paint to 1 part medium. That seems to work better.

    Thanks for the video. Can I use Linseed oil also when using the liquid version of this?

      You can, but adding oil will result in the need for mineral spirits which will negate the use of the medium

      @@cinderblockstudios Thank you for the reply. Why I asked is that I have a few tubes of watermixable oil, and I use linseed oil with them without using any mineral spirits, and I use water to clean the brushes.
      Was wondering if this medium would behave the same way.

      I'm surprised you don't need a solvent to clean your brushes with the added oil

      @@cinderblockstudios My appologies. I think I made a mistake in saying "I use water to clean the brushes".
      What I meant was while I'am painting , I simply swirl in water to (to "clean the brush" and change to the next color).
      You are right, it can't really clean the brush, it will still contain linseed oil in the brush but removes most of the color from the brush enough to pick the next color.
      The linseed oil really makes the flow easier with water mixable oils.

    Is this gel really any different than any other painting gel? If it is different, why is it different?

    • @cinderblockstudios
      @cinderblockstudios  3 місяці тому +1

      It's different because it (marginally) makes regular oils water mixable

    In general, the gel mediums are volume and texture enhancers to the oil paint and provides a lower cost for paint without losing any vibrancy or tonal value of the paint color. This Schmincke's Medium W Gel has a unique feature that I would also like to try. I don't think Schmincke's directions are correct in the use of water in their mix recipe. Water is only for cleanup ! See my other comment on typical use of water mixable oil paints. - Thanks.

    Interesting review and testing. In general the water mixable oil paints are diluted or thinned with agents specially design for thinning the water-media oil paints. I believe you were thinning with water or standard oil paint thinners. Exactly what is that solution in the glass jar? Conventional oil paint thinners will work on water mixable oil paints - But this defeating the basic concept of switching or using the alternative to conventional oil paint and potential hazardous vapors from the oil painting agents. Please note that if you use the water thinning method with water mixable oil paints, I believe you will also be displeased with the results - I believe that you will claim that water mixable oil paints are terrible. Please clarify my observations. So I am uncertain with you results, too! I also like experimenting with a variety of media and agents. Be safe and follow all the precautions on the products. Thanks for presenting this magic gel.
