To this day, my favorite KISS story has to be when they performed a concert on Halloween in Hollywood (about 15-20 years ago) and the concert they were being driven by van back to their hotel. However this being on Sunset boulevard AND Halloween everybody was out partying and causing a virtual standstill in traffic. The band decided to get out of the van and walk back to their hotel. They were still in full makeup and costume having left the concert almost immediately after its conclusion. During the walk, nobody stopped and harassed them and they only got a few complements shouted out on how good their costumes were and they made it back to their hotel with ease because nobody realized who they really were!

When this song was released, it caused a bit of an uproar amongst Kiss fans, many of them hated the fact that their favorite hard rock band had written a disco song. It was written on a bet. Paul Stanley (the lead vocalist for this song) had bet a friend that it was easier to write a disco song than it was to write a rock song. This was the result, and he wrote it quickly, supposedly over a single weekend.

A fair number of hits have been cranked out fast. My Sharona (The Knack) was written along a similar challenge. The writer didn't like pop music of the time because "anyone could write a top 40 song". When told to do try if it was so easy he wrote the song in about 15 minutes. I've read some reports he wrote it while sitting on the toilet. Or about as long as it takes to crap.
According to Robert Plant, Stairway to Heaven took as long to write as it does to play.
For all the work and creative talent musicians pour into their work, it's often throw away or filler pieces that end up defining them.

Wow, you sure know how to pick 'em, Irish Rocker Girl! I only saw KISS one time, in October of '75 in the Cadillac high school gym, just before I joined the US Navy. The band was just starting to take off when that happened. The story of KISS in Cadillac is fascinating. The whole glam-rock schtick with the make-up and outfits led the band to create a vast array of collectible merchandise which sold very well and made the band a lot of money. Their live shows were filled with lots of theatrics: Gene spitting fire, Ace's guitar giving off sparks and smoke during solos, lotsa pyrotechnics throughout. The look on your face when you recognized Gene Simmons by his tongue: simply priceless!

The song that you thought might be from the band KISS sounds like the song titled "Kiss" by Prince. "I Was Made for Lovin' You" was released near the end of the disco era, and was KISS's version of a disco song. Various other rock acts at the time, such as Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, and others released disco-influenced songs in the late 70s, with varying levels of artistic and financial success. Most KISS songs were heavier than this, although they also had a big hit with a soft ballad titled "Beth". Coincidentally, I attended a KISS concert around the time "I Was Made For Lovin' You" was released. In July 1979 I saw KISS at the Pontiac Silverdome (a football stadium near Detroit). I was not a big KISS fan, but I went mainly to see the band that played before them, Cheap Trick. I stayed for KISS, though. While not a fan, I don't dislike them either.

Kiss was HUGE in their day. They had a fully constructed schtick with the make-up for their characters, who all had a back story. They had a surprisingly good catalogue of music (Detroit Rock City is likely their best known song) that sort of straddled the line between harder rock and glam.
But their biggest impact would likely be their genius marketing strategy. They called their fanclub the KISS Army and interacted in a way that virtually no one had before. They also licensed their name/likeness for almost any and everything to an extent never thought of (everything from Pat he's to see in a jacket to lunchboxes to a coffin....yes, an actual coffin). While their lineup did change several times, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have always been the core of the band.

I'll disagree about Detroit Rock City. The song that was on the radio all the time was Rock and Roll All Night. I listened to top 40 in 1975 and later but that song was everywhere. That was their big break out song. In 1976 they won The Peoples Choice Award for being the most popular band that year. They were in a concert when it was announced and that was the song they played on live national TV.

"When we started KISS, we wanted to give rock and roll fans the type of show we wanted to go see ourselves. So that was our goal, and I think we succeeded." --- Paul Stanley, lead singer, KISS (the guy with the star over one eye).

Kiss was my first favorite band back in the 70's. They were credited with creating the "wall of sound" and had the most entertaining live shows. Been to many of their concerts, the first in 1975. If you want to check out the next generation in rock listen to Band Maid's live Domination!

Awesome video, Diane! Good to see you experiencing KISS for the first time. I remember their songs as a kid back when music was available in the form of 8-track tapes and records. The first album my brother and I had was Double Platinum. In the late ‘70s, they all made a solo album, I had bought Ace Frehley’s (known as The Spaceman) album since he was my favorite. I also had a liking for Gene Simmons (the Demon), but gradually shifted toward Ace, the lead guitarist. The big song from his solo album was a cover of “New York Groove”.
My brother’s favorite was Peter Criss (The Catman) who was the drummer. We did plenty of air guitar and air drums listening our albums 😂

Being a kid of 12 in Los Angeles in 1979, I was the perfect listener, I was already a Kiss fan, and this disco track was very popular and listenable. It played at the roller rink, and the school kids would skate around in circles while this and Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want Me” blasted over the sound system. Good times, indeed.

Funny thing is I pulled out some old albums to listen to today while sorting out the pool - kind of picked them randomly, and the KISS host album for this track came out first, and Jethro Tull came out second.
I learned today that Kiss were actually a US band - I always associated them with Thin Lizzy for some reason (now that I look at their names, it's all the i's), imagining Kiss were also a UK band.

In early interviews, when they were searching for a sound, Paul/Gene said they set out "to be the band that we never saw." Ffwd couple of decades & all of a sudden, EVERY band has merchandising, PR hype & a light/sound show, to augment their song catalog. Liked them almost when I first heard them, & now, love them for their innovative foresight! KISS...Often imitated, Never Duplicated!
