  • Last week in EF-Lab, a parent asked about their 17 year old son who is struggling to get up and go to school. The student doesn't know what is making it hard, likes the school, teachers say he’s fine at school, and the parents are asking the school for learning support for EF skill building. In this video I’ll break down 1 of the many strategies we covered, so you might be able to adapt it!

    Cookie-cutter approaches don't work.
To help outside-the-box, neurodiverse kids, we need the right tools.
Traditional interventions often fail because they don't get to the ROOT of the problem.
So patterns get WORSE each year, leading to pervasive difficulties transitioning into adulthood.
    Let's do this RIGHT.

I am a teacher and I have many neurodiverse and non-neurodiverse students in grade 7 & 8 who are struggling to make it to school consistently. We have updated their IEPs with new learning skill goals, and techniques to help with executive function are integrated into lessons, but they still continue to miss many days of school. I have a husband and a son with ADHD so in meetings I have already given advice to families of strategies that have worked for our family for completing work in class, getting out the door on time (for the most part) and doing homework. What advice can I give parents to help them get their kids in the classroom where they will be able to learn and progress? I feel like I cannot help because I do not see the students often enough.

I would love to hear, as well. My daughter (age 9, diagnosed with ASD and SM) has been struggling to go to school since first grade. She is now in third grade. It seems to be a chronic problem that no one can solve -- we've seen multiple therapists (at school as well as private), she's worked with multiple teachers who try to be flexible and think outside the box, and we're still in the same situation. In first grade, she missed more than 70 school days. I'd be grateful for recommendations from parents, teachers, and/or other professionals.

Do you have any videos about students who like going to school but refuse to work once they are there? My daughter says it gives her “power” to refuse to work and that it’s fun.
