I’m watching your videos since i was 12 years old, and my dream was to fix lots of phones. Now I’m 18 years old, and i was fixing lots of phones, and now I’m working with Israel Aerospace Industries. Appreciate so much your time for making such good videos.
We've done many of these and I personally replace the meson only and have not had any come back. Also if you are out of new mesons to reduce the chance of a bad ic, I've also been able to reball the same meson and have it work. Once I complete the repair we'll put something on the meson for pressure and then add the shield.
That's cool :) I hope you continue to have no returns. It can be maddening sometimes turning out 30 of these in a week. I didn't think about doing something to hold pressure on the IC after replacing it. That could be just enough to keep one from coming back that has a pad separated that goes unnoticed.
Discovered your channel from someone over on r/mobilerepair. Great stuff. I think more channels like yours should exist. Thanks for doing this, and keep it up. 7:05. Hah. Gonna be completely honest with you. The first time I tried cleaning an iPhone 6 board of liquid damage, I informed the customer that I really don't know what I'm doing and that she should find a store that offers ultrasonic cleaning. She said it was alright, and to just try my best. I knew enough that I needed to remove the EMI shields, so I started going around the board taking them off so I could attempt to manually clean them. I flipped it over and started blasting that tape-covered area with heat. Sat there for minutes wondering when the fuck it would let me lift the shield off. Then I found out it was just tape and felt myself die a lot inside. Needless to say, that phone was very much dead after that, but it was also very much dead before. 18:40 I've found that most tacky fluxes seem to have that property of "locking" the chip down. It kind of flows right into place and does most of the work for you. I personally use Amtech 559, and it is actually reasonably easy to clean up even when cold. I use kimwipes and alcohol and an anti-static brush. A majority of it will get pulled right up. It also blows away very nicely on high air and low heat.
I did the exact same thing on my first iPhone 6 board. I toasted that sticker pretty good before realizing it was just a sticker! LOL I haven't used Amtech 559 yet but I'll probably give it a shot pretty soon when I make the next order. Thank you for the info and comments! I'm gonna be posting videos as often as time allows. :)
Hey, just came across your video a bit randomly as I considered doing some work on an iphone 6 logic board. I really enjoyed the video and the story of your repairs! Thanks for sharing and letting us step into your shop for a while.
You're welcome! I think these videos are helping me just as much or maybe even more than they are everyone else. I really enjoy it. Thanks for watching and commenting =)
Hi Jason. Thank you for the wonderful video! It is helping so much. Can you just tell me what liquid you are putting on on 8:37? Also I'd like to know what tools i need for fixing the main-board. For instance, heating gun, glue etc. Thank you so much!
hello , can you please tell me what is the name of the metalic plate your removed at min 1:36 and what is its function in the phone (does it protect it or the user from any electro magnetic waves or interference ) I think its name is EMI shield as for Electro Magnetic Interfernce sheild , I got my phone screen repaired and the man said he removed and he will not put it back because it serves for nothing .... I would like to know if its their to protect me from the waves or protect the phone Thank you so much
I have a question about the adhesive shield you took of the bottom of the board at 7:00. I took that off of a 6s to clean for water damage, and that shield cannot be reused. What can I use to replace it or is it necessary? Thank you
I typically use kapton tape :) Probably not the correct thing but I think the idea of that conductive sticker is to keep interference out. Once it is in the housing, the back is covered by grounded aluminum housing. Seems to me the conductive sticker may only truly help during testing before they get installed into housings. I may be wrong but I've never had a problem putting regular ole' tape over it.
Hey jason i have found out that sometimes only with heating up the ic sometimes the touch detection comes back for me it already worked 7 times and it does not take so long great video :)
Thanks! Yes these connections are so tiny even the slightest variation in temperature is enough to make them or break them. Hopefully it keeps hanging in there as long as you need it to. =)
Hi Jason. Highly informative video thank you. If you don't mind I'd like to ask about how quickly you remove these chips. Am I correct in assuming you want to use higher heat to remove these chips asap before it starts affecting other components too much? looks like you using a bigger nozzle than I'm used to. What size is it? Be so grateful for your valued advice.
I had this problem with the cameras after replacing both touch ic;s, I ended up replacing the voltage regulator tiiiiiny chip, which brought back the back camera and then ended up re soldering some of the front camera components like the ferrites, caps etc near the cpu shield, this brought back the screen camera then, the odd thing is all of the components were testing just fine, so im guessing the only thing that was holding them to to board was the glue, possible heat transfer through the board caused them to detach, which is bizarre as I heat sink everything to death and never have the problem when doing a main pmu ic.
Don't feel badly someone will mess up due to you; we will mess up due to our own mistakes. You are helping us Jason! I wanna ask again in case you missed my question on the s3 data recovery video; have you considered chip-off technique for data recovery jobs? Also, I am going to start doing touch ic jobs real soon as I just got my new tools. I personally think you are changing too little. If i was sending you a board from one of my customers I would not only pay your low asking price but I would tip you! Haggling is not a good skill to try and hone on repair people, we generally sell ourselves short to begin with. I think you should be charging $200 for touch ic. How is it worth less than screen replacement? You are worth way more than your asking price Jason. I hope to see you raise the prices. I am going to charge $200 and I think Jessa charges $200. If they don't want to pay let them go to someone with less integrity.
Thank u! I think by chip off method you mean hooking directly to the flash memory and copying the data. I've thought of it but assumed it's most likely encrypted or have IDs on the file system that have to match for the OS to boot right.. It brought about more questions in my mind that answers and I moved on. LOL I'm sure there's a way to hook directly to the nand and copying the raw data but getting it to make sense would be amazing.
This method only works up to Samsung S5. Hopefully they'll be stuff available for the newer Samsung devices with UFS's but all you need is a Jtag box (I recommend Z3X Jtag box w/ emmc adapter) All you need to do is solder 6 wires to the emmc or alternative points on the board if available (which means you don't need to remove the chipset) or you can buy a socket that makes reading not only way easier/more repeatable but it dumps faster! forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f672/emmc-adapter-easy-z3x-jtag-box-1691845/ forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f672/e-mate-pro-emmc-tool-all-1-socket-all-1-adapter-work-easyjtag-2097603/

Hi Jason I watch your videos and I make sure I leave you thumbs up thanks for everything. I was wondering what is the model number of your power supply and how do you like it? Tks
Thank you! I'm using a really cheap one. It gets the job done but that's about it :) www.ebay.com/itm/5A-30V-DC-Power-Supply-Adjustable-Dual-Digital-Variable-Precision-Lab-Grade-/262294040786?hash=item3d11f170d2:g:RegAAOSw9eVXUIdZ
There is a window right behind me that we pull air from. Right now we keep good airflow through the building and that's about it. I really don't make too much smoke working on these little boards but still always have fresh air moving through. I'm adding a new system for fume extraction pretty soon though.
Thanks for the info man...I have been repairing mobile devices over 9 years now and i must say I am impressed with all your repairs, I live in the caribbean and visted the united states some years ago to do my certification in repairs, no motherboard micro soldering was done so most of what I have learnt on that level is from your videos, keep up the good work, Do you offer any classes ?
That would work out ok if there was never any problems... ever. I think those are the shops that the moment they see a torn pad or something, they cram the IC back on the board and send it back as no fix. Or they throw a chip on it and if it gets touch, they get paid, if it doesn't - no fix. I really don't think they're doing much troubleshooting for that price but then again, if they live in a place where $20 per day can pay the bills, maybe they do a dang good job? LOL - No way I'd do it for that price unless I could go back to living with my parents! :D
STS Telecom Lol I agree. Sucks though because to an average customer the lower price seems appealing and could take away from other shops. How do you get most of your customers? Having trouble finding customers locally and want to generate some mail-in repairs
I used to pay Facebook to boost posts mostly but since I started posting videos here, I haven't paid Facebook another penny. It's gotten to the point that local walk-in traffic is very difficult to manage. It has slowed down some though. I'm finally starting to catch up now that Apple is offering a "solution" to the touch IC issue. That made a huge difference in mail-in volume overnight.
Thanks :) I'm using this one: www.amazon.com/Aoyue-852A-Digital-Rework-Station/dp/B000HDDXY0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483029705&sr=8-1&keywords=aoyue+hot+air
Just a natural interested and hands on. I learned most of what I know about electronics before there was smart phones building radios and stuff with my dad. In the past couple of years I learned that it was all still the same stuff, it just requires a microscope to work on it now. :)
Hi Jason, just saw your video, great stuff. My iPhone 6 dropped and screen shattered. I bought a new screen off eBay.after connecting the new screen the phone reboots then screen goes red and turns off. Then happened over and over. I restored and updated phone with no help.however if I disconnect the last flex close to main processes the phone starts fine with no touch screen. Can u fix this knowing that I was planning to do it myself but I chickened out since my micro soldering experience is zero. Thanks.
There's a pretty good chance I could help. Have you tried to replace that front camera/flex? I'm guessing you already have, but if not, there's a chance it may be that.
Good morning Jason, first off just to say great job with your videos and your approach, i have a question that maybe you might have an answer to, ive run into a problem recently on a few 5s and 6 not sure if other models are affected but the phone comes into me with either the connect to itunes logo or in a boot loop and then during an update or restore i get an error 9 and nothing i do gets it passed that, changed batteries, charge ports, screens, U2 ic in some cases but still the same. The few cases i've come across the owners haven't done anything unusual with the phones, they just go into the connect to itunes mode on their own.. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated..
Sorry, I should be able to answer you better here but this one is really not one of my strong points. It sounds like you've covered all of the basics including Tristar. I did a bit of Googling on error 9 and didn't come up with much other than possible network issues or software security problems. Hmmmmm.. Since you said a few, that really makes me think that this is software update related? Hopefully you've figured something out by now - I'm 2 days late. Thanks for the good compliments =)
An update on this, i read on a forum that it maybe a cpu issue and someone had some success by applying pressure to the cpu during the restore process so i gave that a try on a 6 by opening the phone and using 2 clothes pegs to clamp down on it during a restore and it worked, I have no doubt that it is only a temporary fix but at least i know what the problem is now..
Good afternoon Jason! My name is Marilton, I'm brazilian. I would like to know, what temperature and air pressure do you use to remove the CIs. Thank you for yours videos.
STS Telecom Hi there Jason, i've been practicing this repair on damaged boards and have had some success but im having trouble with both chips "slipping" when working them back onto the board. i'm thinking too much airflow? Wondering if its possible we could have a more in depth chat? Thanks for all the great vids, repair shop out of B.C Canada.
I think in this video I used new ones. In the past I always used new ones. Now I reball Meson and re-use it 99% of the time because it is a good IC. The PCB is at fault.
The only thing that is keeping me from doing this is that i do not have a heat gun. can i get away with not having a fancy one like you? Is it absolutely impossible to remove the chip w/o heat? to be honest I'm due for a new phone but really would like to fix the phone i have now.
But just as important as the hot air is a microscope to be able to see it. It really is a tedious job man. I've never known anyone to do this type of thing successfully their first time even with the right tools tho.
STS Telecom thanks for the quick reply man I appreciate it. Looks like I am going to be getting a new phone :| not looking to buy all the flux and the hot air gun nor the ultrasonic cleaner. how much do u charge to do this if u don't mind me asking. One more question, how do u test for bendage on the phone. As u said in one of ur videos, I have to apply a twisting pressure to be able to typed. Ps I have a 6 + :( fml lol
I believe you called the shop. Hopefully you have figured something out by now :) Apple has a deal going now for $150 to fix it if you have an Apple store near by.
I want to give guarantee on my mobile repairing Shop but by seeing you i think it's hard to accomplish because your level is show much higher than me as compared to me I'm just a child
This is the one I'm using. Despite what I've heard about low end stations, this sucker has been a workhorse. It runs almost all day every day. www.amazon.com/Aoyue-852A-Digital-Rework-Station/dp/B000HDDXY0/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1478050839&sr=8-8&keywords=aoyue+station
Great video Jason , don't you just hate those videos when they don't speck but have that mind numbing music on 🙉,...Good news on that hand made shield proving ineffectual , but well done pioneering it so vigilantly for us all 🙏 , look forward to seeing more jumper work too soon ; P.s could you let me know the make and # of the flux used to sit those chips please ??? Kind regards Alaster
Thanks! Yeah, social media doesn't get you very far if you're not actually being social. LOL Well, for most people.. the howtobasic channel gets billions of hits and the guy never says a word. I've switched back to ChipQuik SMD291 for soldering these little guys on. It holds the chip snug for final heating when applied just right.. or it can be a total mess, either way. :)
If this hot air station quit today, I would buy another one. I use it all day every day and it is very consistent. I couldn't imagine spending $1800 or even $800 on hot air. Maybe one day.
One more thing about this station. If you buy one, remember to remove the shipping screw from the bottom. I think everyone that you hear say, "they vibrate and are SO loud" - didn't read the directions. :-)
No, but I have had many of them have flickering grey bars resurface merely hours after giving them the all clear. I test them very well too. It's strange how this can resurface with zero bending, then another swap of Meson fixes it sometimes for good, sometimes for a few weeks. I really don't think underfill is going to prevent this. It would certainly make warranty work a nightmare and there will be warranty work.
STS Telecom fair enough. Have you tracked the rework rate of full devices vs board only? If the housing is still bent or even partially bent it's going to be more prone to further flexing and subsequent failure. I'd suggest a pad over the mason and an insulated future proof plate with the thickness of an ipad mini lcd back bracket.
Lol did you notice the electrical tape stuck right above the touch ic chip? there's some video claiming to fix problems by applying pressure to the chip

What type of soldering tip you are using to cleanup the pads?
Hi. What kind of solder tip do you use to repass the pads?
What welding flux do you use in micro-BGA welding?
I need this done to my phone. Haven't found anyone in my area to do it yet though.

thank you STS Telecom

STS Telecom thanks !!!
hi Jason I have a question where did you learn to do this all of this
Nassim Razick i think like every technchian diy underground
Thanks for the reply, it looks like i'm just going to have to wait it out for a software solution.. i was hoping it was something i was missing.
An update on this, i read on a forum that it maybe a cpu issue and
someone had some success by applying pressure to the cpu during the
restore process so i gave that a try on a 6 by opening the phone and
using 2 clothes pegs to clamp down on it during a restore and it worked,
I have no doubt that it is only a temporary fix but at least i know
what the problem is now..
i had the same problem, i changed tristar and bla bla it does not work after that i made a big risk and i reballed NAND disk it is working now
good job its so clear i loved it
Good afternoon Jason! My name is Marilton, I'm brazilian.
I would like to know, what temperature and air pressure do you use to remove the CIs.
Thank you for yours videos.
390C most of the time but how far the nozzle is from the board makes a huge difference.
thanks dear friend for yours help!
HI Jason thank you for the vedio I replaced touch screen ic then the phone just turned on just light with no image what it could be ?
Sorry, to hear that! There are a lot of things that could be. I don't think there's any way for me to tell without seeing it.
sir help me once i have changed touch ic on 6 plus customer complaing 12 times its freezing sometimes what should i do
how much to replace the LCD and Digitizer connector on the board of an iPhone 6 and also a baseband reflow?
Sorry, I'm not able to offer a fix for the baseband issue at this time. Here's a link to our prices:
www.ststele.com/special-services/
Are you reballing them or set a new one? Sorry for my bad English
I think in this video I used new ones. In the past I always used new ones. Now I reball Meson and re-use it 99% of the time because it is a good IC. The PCB is at fault.
Thanks a lot
Thank you very much. Very interesting.

The only thing that is keeping me from doing this is that i do not have a heat gun. can i get away with not having a fancy one like you? Is it absolutely impossible to remove the chip w/o heat? to be honest I'm due for a new phone but really would like to fix the phone i have now.
also is it absolutely necessary for ultrasonic cleaning
I paid $130 for this hot air station. There is no way to do it without a concentrated stream of hot air.
Is there anyway you can fix mine I live in North Carolina , how much would it cost and what do I have to do . Ship my phone to you ?
I believe you called the shop. Hopefully you have figured something out by now :) Apple has a deal going now for $150 to fix it if you have an Apple store near by.
what flux did u used?
I want to give guarantee on my mobile repairing Shop but by seeing you i think it's hard to accomplish because your level is show much higher than me as compared to me I'm just a child
Jason can you say what model is your heatgun
This is the one I'm using. Despite what I've heard about low end stations, this sucker has been a workhorse. It runs almost all day every day.

Thank you Jason it seem to work well in your videos
How much is the metal shield?
I am really like watching your video, good like always! Greate repair.
thank you! :)

STS Telecom
Great video Jason , don't you just hate those videos when they don't speck but have that mind numbing music on 🙉,...Good news on that hand made shield proving ineffectual , but well done pioneering it so vigilantly for us all 🙏 , look forward to seeing more jumper work too soon ;
P.s could you let me know the make and # of the flux used to sit those chips please ??? Kind regards Alaster
Thanks! Yeah, social media doesn't get you very far if you're not actually being social. LOL Well, for most people.. the howtobasic channel gets billions of hits and the guy never says a word.
I've switched back to ChipQuik SMD291 for soldering these little guys on. It holds the chip snug for final heating when applied just right.. or it can be a total mess, either way. :)
cheers Jason , ill try get hold of some...
What are you using the name Filx
Please post iPhone 6splus screen rotate not working error
How much do you charge to fix this and how long does it take?
+Adrian Levy Currently our turnaround time is 3 to 7 days and we charge $125 + return shipping.
Can you send me info?
micro.repair/mail-in
Is this consider a routine repair or a non routine repair? And thanks for the shipping info.
Also do you replace the IC's for that price?
which use you past
i have iphone 5c touchscreen sometimes doesn't work it been droped a lot will a new screen fix it?
It's most likely the screen if you haven't tried a new screen yet. I do see a lot of those with touch IC failure but it is usually just the screen.
Ok thanks
Thank u man.
how about not disconnecting battery and flexes with a metal tool....
Thank you so much sir.
You're very welcome! =) Thanks for watching.
how can i know if i need to replace both touch ic or just one, and wich one of them?
There's a pretty good chance you can get away with changing Meson only
thanks ... love your channel .... what is the name of the other touch ic ?
khollyo mansour u2401 is cumulus. You can buy 5 pairs of cumulus and meson(u2402) on aliexpress for about 35$
How is that hot air? I want a budget
H. A.S.
If this hot air station quit today, I would buy another one. I use it all day every day and it is very consistent. I couldn't imagine spending $1800 or even $800 on hot air. Maybe one day.
STS Telecom Thanks for the input, and thank you for always being available to respond immediately. You are #1.
One more thing about this station. If you buy one, remember to remove the shipping screw from the bottom. I think everyone that you hear say, "they vibrate and are SO loud" - didn't read the directions. :-)
STS Telecom very good 😂😂, thanks again.
Thanks God bless you
iPhone 5 when I try to power it on, apple logo comes on then off. And it keeps doing that and phone does not boot
Hi y don't yu use uv paste to under fill the ic???
98%success rate
That's a really nice success rate :) I may give it a shot one day. Thanks!
can u fix my iPhone 6 plus
ok but have you ever actually tried to underfill a chip after confirming that the touch is working?
Hi sir iPhone 6 touch not working
i remove both of touch ic but phone don't swich on :( what i have done wrong !
There are a lot of things that can cause this. It's usually something fixable but not always so easy to find.
i think it's the power manager ic :( cz with microscop it's look like it's get shorted !
GeeK check for short to ground on your capacitors on the power line
hi :) im just nebie where could i find it ! dd u mean capasitor near power ic managment !
sir u seeing 2 toch ic
Thank
Why would this vid get a thumbs down?
iPhone Husbandry !
Lol did you notice the electrical tape stuck right above the touch ic chip? there's some video claiming to fix problems by applying pressure to the chip
do you have a business? ?
