Here Is What Causes High Creatinine Levels

- Are you wondering what causes high creatinine levels? Maybe you got a recent blood test and you are looking at some of the things that are flagged as high or low and yours says high creatinine. Creatinine is a way to measure your kidney function. In this article, we look at what causes creatinine levels to go up and down and what the actual test is measuring.
Creatinine is a chemical byproduct of creatine, which comes from muscle tissue. Mostly, creatine helps deliver energy to the muscle when higher energy demands are present. You have probably heard of creatine in terms of building muscle, body building, and overall athletic performance. This is the same thing that we are talking about. However, don't confuse creatine with creatinine.
Creatine actually turns into creatinine via the enzyme creatinine kinase. Creatine it's continually being produced by the liver and therefore its production is said to be constant. Because of that ongoing production of creatine, there's also an ongoing production of creatinine. The creatinine is eliminated from the body via the kidneys. Since we know where it comes from and we know how it's eliminated from the body, we know why someone might have high levels or what causes high levels of creatinine.
Let me give you a little more context and detail so you can fully grasp this for your own health. We said that creatinine comes from creatine, which comes from muscle. Therefore, the more muscle mass you have, and the bigger you are overall, the more creatinine you are going to end up with.
Now, the general utility of the creatinine test is to look at your kidney function or estimated GFR. GFR stands for glomerular filtration rate. The Glomeruli are little filtration systems within the kidney itself. How well those glomeruli filtration systems are working is said to be related to the creatinine.
The higher your blood creatinine level, the lower your kidney filtration rate because the creatinine goes out through the kidneys in the urinary system. If there's a problem in those filtration systems, the blood creatinine goes up. So that's how we generally think about this test. However, there are some problems or some ways that this test can be a bit misleading.
The first being, it doesn't really factor in your actual weight. If you are really really small, really really big, or even slightly above or below average it skews the results. It skews the glomerular filtration rate. Almost always, when you look at the GFR, there's a little 'e' next to it. That 'e' stands for estimated. It's an estimate because it doesn't factor in your weight. It also does not factor in your gender (some labs do) , which is also important because males tend to have more muscle mass than females.
So this is really important. There are actual calculators that will factor in your weight and gender. With this you can get a more appropriate measurement. There are also other tests that don't use creatinine to measure your kidney function.
The other thing that can sometimes happen when looking at causes of high creatinine levels is recent high intensity exercise close to the test. Because creatinine levels are related to muscle, muscle cells damage can cause higher amounts of creatinine in the blood. Therefore with exercise you can see the kidney function look a little bit off. This can happen one to two days away from a high intensity exercise activity. The same thing can happen with liver enzymes.
Exercise and Elevated Liver Enzymes
Now, if you are regularly doing exercise and this is just part of your routine, we wouldn't expect much affect on the creatinine level. If it's something new and really intense for your body, that's when it will influence your creatinine level. It will cause a high creatinine. The other thing is if you are taking creatine on a regular basis, it will raise your creatinine levels as well.
Of course, the most concerning reason for high creatine levels is you actually do have poor kidney functions. So that's the most obvious thing to look at. There are other reasons not mentioned that can cause this that have nothing to do with your actual kidney function too. - Наука та технологія
Thanks for this! Got a slightly high reading and am pretty convinced intense exercise and creatine supplements are influencing, this helps back that up and we shall see in 2 weeks after a retest!
Could you please tell me what happened after those 2 weeks? Thanks !
I would like to know the outcome of your tests as well. My PCM has referred me to a nephrologist because my annual labs showed a 1.4 creatinine and 25 for my BUN. I've had close to these results for the passed like 4 years. However like a few of the other comments in here, I take creatine supplements, workout very hard 5 days a week, have muscle mass because it, and eat chicken and steak (both cooked lol) every day. Nothing obscene, just a small chicken breast for lunch and a 8oz steak for dinner. Fruits and dark leafy greens as normal too.
1st. Had a blood test. My creatinine is 0.68 says low
2nd. Bun creatinine ratio is 28 says high
I'm a male 36 years old. Are these numbers ok?????
Way more information than what my doc gave me , I had a 1.4 on my last test and was told I can’t take certain types of pain meds anymore, I’m also 6 253 and workout regularly I guess that makes a difference after watching this .
Did you have blood in your pee?
having blood in urine is very dangerous and should not be taken lightly@@rioshound1668
Excellent video, very informative indeed. It explained my raised levels. Thank you.
Great to hear!
Thank you for explaining in a way I was able to understand. I'm only 5'9 156bs and use the gym regularly, I was using powder Creatine daily, which was raising my EGFR, in short everyone reading this should be careful when using aftermarket supplements. Thank you, From FL.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey doc. My creatinine levels have been around 2 for more than a year now. Proteinuria around 1mg. Have a lot of mental disorders as well. No particular damage to kidneys as of now. Any idea what's wrong with me? Also being checked for autoimmune disease cause I have a lot of physical symptoms related to that. Thanks
Thank you. I was a little concerned until I heard you explanations or the eGFR and the taking of a creatine supplement. My test result were just as you described. Well Done.
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant explanation 👍Thank you very much Doc🙏
Glad you liked it
Great information!

When I was 16 I was a dancer and pushed myself hard to keep up with my peers but felt I struggled most. Sweat more, got tired sooner and stayed sore longer. I thought I was out of shape. Tried to eat better but I could t never get stronger or feel more energy
I was in pain for days and my pediatrician ran some tests. A needle inserted into my muscle attached to a monitor and I had to contract my muscle. They did this in my hand, forearm, thigh and shin muscles. They also did a blood test of drawing every 15 mins. My creatinine (cpk) levels were off the charts! Like 200,000! Way abnormal! I wasn’t taking ANY supplements!
In the end he said I had a “defective enzyme” but not full blown muscular dystrophy. Said I actually have strong muscles but lack the enzyme power to fuel them.
Essentially i could work alongside someone of my same biometrics and get more tired sooner than they would.
Told me to pace myself and listen to my body.
Getting in shape is very hard for me. I feel chronically tired.
What is the name of this? I cannot remember. I was 16
Rhabdomyolysis
I am using creatine monohydrate and have 1.5 s.creatinine level....is it a concern for a creatine user...what should i do...can u help me out...
My creatinine was 126
And my gfr was 57 which was indicate stage 3a ckd
But I take 5g creatine a day and I workout regularly, also I’m very muscular I’ve been training for 15yrs .
I also consume around 150-200g of protein per day and have done for years
Does this make sense as to why my gfr was so low, or should I be concerned.
My doctor said stop creatine for 4-6weeks and then repeat blood test
Great Doc,think I might get some sleep tonight.
Enjoy!
Just went in for my annual. All bloodwork looked good but this was 28 and high on the spectrum for my age and gender. However, I am an athlete and had an almost 3 hour training session the day before, plus it was very warm in the training center. Should I worry? I thought I drank enough water. Do I need electrolytes? My sodium and potassium levels were normal.. Hmmm..
We need more doctors like this who know the difference between males and females ..👍
Thank you
Would rapid weight loss cause a rise in Albumin/Creatinine Ratio? I'm diabetic, started taking Mounjaro and lost 30 lbs. in six weeks. My ratio went from 29 to 275. The weight loss has included muscle loss.
i lift weights my creatinine is at 1.4 last time i checked and my gfr 66 i cant figure it out because the kidney drs did ultra sounds and mri and they say my kidneys and tubes are normal i think i have a injury that my drs cant find could that raise my levels anyone know?
My creatinine is 11 over limit and my egfer is 58 ? What could be wrong
I am the routine trail athlete. I've concerned since I had a blood test and found my low eGFR and higher creatinine 1.2 abit rather than . Caused me concern . Now I'v got a point why .
very informative! i think the reason why my creatinine level is so high is because i am a runner! and i run while i have muscle pain . i cant stop running event though im in alot of pain?
That could be connected. If you tell your doctor, they can do the appropriate testing.
@@swintegrative thank you
From what I've read and researched , creatine supplementation, intense exercise, muscle mass, and meat (cooked) consumption, all affect creatinine levels in a negative way. Why then aren't more medical professionals more aware of this and asking questions of their patients, instead of jumping straight to kidney disease?
Yes those things can. It’s hard to know for sure but good question to ask
This is my exact scenario as of the time of my comment. I'm really hoping my kidneys are fine and those levels are due to all of that combined.
@@mightymatt8548 I am exactly in the same situation, muscle mass heavy training ect ect.
@DUCKDINGO I'll try to keep posting here regarding my situation. My appointment with the nephrologist is the 30th of May. I do have paperwork to fill out and labs to do before the appointment. Keep y'all posted.
@@mightymatt8548Do you have an update after seeing your doctor?
Thank you for the video. I am 130 kg big man. Trained strength training for over 20 years. I got my results 9 points over the range. So I was stressed about that. But yeah. So and training day before the test maybe that’s why :) I train hard so I mean hard. 😁💪😳 hopefully that’s why it was slight higher
Could be. Also the normals are based on somewhere around 70kg
60-105 normal. My result 114….
Actually, if you have kind of an athlete lifestyle , if your creatinine came high, please measure your cystatin C levels.
Yes
Can you please explain why?
Hey im back my PC said my levels are at 1.4 what does that mean? Im scared. But i feel ok.
Thank u😊
Welcome 😊
So I went I’m very active in the gym. Workout/Strength training like 3-4 days a week and run about 2-3 miles a week. The day I got bloodwork done I ran a quick mile. Later my creatinine levels were 1.30 and EGFR 72!! They wrote me off as 2nd stage CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease). Totally freaking out!! I’ve never had any kidney issues in my life and I just turned 38. Yes I enjoy alcohol but it’s never been an issue. My potassium, sodium and phosphate levels were all normal! Could this be the cause of my test results!!??
100% had the same issue. I went running to do a blood test because I was late and my creatinine was at 127 and egfr at 65. It freaked me out. Repeated the test after 2 weeks and my levels were back to normal
That's it Doc, ur definitely talking too fast 'cause ur a master of ur subject but we r clueless ... Therefore, try to go slow ... I could only understand it's got to do something with the muscles & liver ... Anyway, I'm going to listen to ur words repeatedly ... Maybe I'll understand ... But it's a good video anyway ... Thanks ...
Male 36 years old 5,7
1st. Creatinine 0.68 says low
2nd Bun/creatinine ratio 28 says high
Any feed back please ????
Thanks
Hey, doc. I lift heavy weights and I'm taking creatine as a supplement (5g/day every day) Yesterday after I took creatine I went for a blood test. Test results came and my creatinine levels are 1.2
They told me to stop taking it for a while. I was planning to stop after a week or two, for 28 days
Do I need to stop right away? Is 1.2 normal for someone taking creatine?
I drink like 5-6 of water a day mininum
Can’t say if that is normal but it is normal for it to raise your level. Main thing is to verify your level is normal without it
@@swintegrative Hey doc. It seems that I informed you wrong. My creatinine level is 0.94 - so its not the problem. I thought my doctor said 1.2 cuz he said 1200... Apparently my CK is 1200. Is it normal? It looks like it should be around100-200 but mine is waaay above. I go to the gym 6 times a week.(what I meant by lifting heavy weights) Could it be the problem? The researches show that exercise only affects %50-%100 not %600
I'm gonna take a break and test again.
Is going gym cause High creatinine ? Please dr reply 😢
Well, since you said this video is for educational purposes only, I shyed away from asking what may be going on in the background, but as it seems there has not been any satisfactory answer so far, I was told to drink excessive water to wash out creatinine levels. I tried to follow suit, but I guess you can imagine what happened in-stead... the medical personal prescribed increased sodium levels to me, although I skipped sugar source foods as well as possible and also avoided protein and salt as much as I could. Now I was wondering: Was my body reacting to this deficit by using glycogenesis? Is that why creatinine levels were showing up?
No, high creatinine is from a poor kidney filtration issue. See my other videos on creatinine
My creatinine is 1.9, is it normal for it to increase because I'm taking antibiotics and pain killer post surgery?
Would t expect that but possibly from surgery depending on what kind
Hello my creatinine level is 160.6 umol/l. I work out every day except Friday and Sunday, I lift weights a lot , could this be why ? 160 is pretty very high
Do you eat a lot of cooked meat?
Proven heavy exercise and weight lifting creates more creatine ie creatine. Intensive exercise will cause you additional problems
My creatine measure 558.1.what stage is it.
Mine has been stuck low at 0.63 which is low but nobody has said that’s bad. All the other tests seem good tho. Alt is def higher but not in the red as of yet. Should I be worried
Low levels typically are not a problem as it relates to kidney function
@@swintegrative I wonder if i should take a little creatine here and there? Thanks for the response btw
My GFR is 73 and my creatinine is 123. Doc, is it good and can i raise the gfr n reduce the creatinine level?
Both will change a lot based on hydration blood pressure and sugar and in my experience it can be improved
@@swintegrative would exercise also help in reducing the creatinine and improving the GFR?
Any special dietary requirements too?
So Ceatinine values on blood tests thereby effect eGFr numbers?
Yes
Wow! That’s explaining a lot for me now!
I want to train for strength and to not be Mr Olympia, can it be done and not hurt kidney function?
Absolutely
Good day Doctor. What is the Blood test that includes Age, Height and Weight called?
there is not one that does it but calculators you can use. new video on this soon alternative blood test is cystatin-c
Can excesses(activities) help normalized the creation level
Increased activity typically will not help it. Although exercise is healthy for your kidney
which meds are best for high blood pressure after a transplant...be specific please i.e.-is diltiazem and (Cozaar or telmisartan) best? thx
can't help you there
Diet
I am 56 years old, my creatinine is 1.03 and I am a female. I would appreciate you telling me my GFR? Thanks
Your GFR is 64
Dear sir, i am taking pork meat 3/4 time a week.
2 month before i ckeck my whole body.
my creatinine 1.43 lab value (0.7-1.5)
uric acid 8.13 (no any symptoms)
total protein 8.13
Weight 86
Age 22
I have no high bp ( only it go to 130-140 when i worry about these raise creatinine)
No sugar
Protine nil
Blood nil
All other are normal
After that i stop eating pork and less protein diet.
Eating lemon water 2 time a day
Drinking water 2 liter a day
Exercise 20 min a day..
Now after 1.5 month
My creatinine 0.93 lab value (0.5-1.3)
Uric acid 5.8
So i have ckd ???
You are probably fine. 0.93 creatinine is perfect score.
You are talking too fast

Hahaha…I’m listening at 2x speed!
Nah he’s good ..
Your listening too slow lol
Doctor i am 31 yes old. My creatinine is 1.09,and gfr 78 , is it normal or bad?
They would say it’s chronic kidney disease but like he said them tests could be misleading when you don’t factor in high intensity physical activity!!
yep
I'm in this same boat. Can't believe doctors are just diagnosing people with this bullshit
You didn't mention cooked meat. Lots of good studies on huge average increases in healthy folks.
I would imagine that part of that is due to the creatine in the meats but do u have any studies you want to share?
@@swintegrative All of them. Truly. Google cooked meat serum creatinine.
So what are you suggesting, vegan? LOL
@@lanceb7288 "Results: Consumption of a standardized cooked meat meal significantly increased serum creatinine and resulted in significant fall in eGFR in all stages of CKD studied; 6 of 16 CKD 3a patients were misclassified as CKD 3b. This effect of cooked meat on serum creatinine disappears after 12 h of fasting in all study participants."
So, this shouldn't be a reason for raised creatinine on the blood test, unless you had a meat meal late night, which you shouldn't do.
Does having high blood pressure and being obese. Have a problem with your kidneys?
Yes blood pressure and blood sugar both have negative impact
Please explain a bit slowly because you are talking. fast can't understand.Thank you.
You can change playback speed to .75 speed
Started vitamin D...can that raise it too.?
No
Will it cause muscle spasms
It can. Or so I've read.

My creatinine has been on the high side due to mild kideny dusease and for the last four months, ive been eating more plant based.I still eat small amounfs of meat, but mostly fruit veg,and beans.Last month i got a low creatinine.I havent seen my nephrologist het,but was a bit worried about ahat i rsad on google.Thought it was good to lower it,was just trying to go easy kn my bidy and eat more olant based.I am a fenale and overweight. I wont take advice in place of seeing dr.😊
Request a Cystatin C test for a better kidney function test. Since you mention you’re a heavy weight female your numbers will be altered so can be inaccurate. My test came back to 62 egfr and my Cystatin c test was at 83 so it’s a big difference. I hope this helps
Great information but edit is pretty bad
my creatinine is 2.4
so good or bad
plese tell me
Are you good now? Which medicine did you take?
Can dehydration do it?
Yep
@@swintegrativeso working out regularly, lifting weights, poor hydration and physical activity right before the test can give these results and they automatically think it’s CKD?
So I had a CK level of 564 and creatinine of 1.31. My GFR was 76. So based on this my kidney function is fine from my understanding?
For reference. I’m 5’8, 165 lbs, lean, consume about 150 grams of protein a day and 5 g of creatine. Strength training 4-6 days a week.
Go for a cystatin C test.
