At 82 I have a similar story and am enjoying a busy and productive life. Now at target weight and waist size. I tend towards a slightly later 7 hour eating window to fit in with my partner. Trying to motivate myself to do resistance training to offset some muscle loss. Feeling blessed. By the way having an occasional treat is absolutely OK.

I am 53 and I wish I can make it to 80. My dad died when I was 15. He died at 58 as a diabetic. My mom died two years ago at 84. I only take gout med at age 53, but I have controlled my diet. Let's see. The astrologist said around 66. My astrologist has been remarkably right about many things. I am still skeptical.

Why not give it a try? I started at age 65. Now I am 75.
Within 6 months I saw changes, I dropped 100 lb. overall.
      Similar family medical history.
      1. I Take very high quality Fish oil/Cod Liver oil so that you get 1.4g EPA and 1g DHA daily.
This lowered my triglycerides to 65, and raised HDL to over 90..
      2. I cut off sugar completely.
Avoid what a much as possible.
      I avoid wheat as well.
      I avoid all processed foods.

So true, I reverse my type 2 diabetes, using similar approach, I took medication for 10 years and the last time I used any kind of medication was February 2007. I am 67 years old at 5’ 10’’ weight 155 pounds and take no medication, exercise every day. Eat 3 meals a day, breakfast at 8:30, lunch at 12:30 and a small dinner at 5:00.

I've had 2 kidney transplants. After I lost my first donated kidney (10 yrs.) I vowed I would do everything possible not to lose my 2nd one.
Before my 2nd transplant I dove into research on fat/protein based nutrition and time restricted eating. Long story short, it's been over 3 years and my creatine has never been above 1.3.
For me, I've been able to thrive exceptionally well on one meal a day.
ALL OF MY METABOLIC MARKERS are well within normal ranges.
I feel like I have created a moat around my metabolic health.
I'm 67 years old and am also in the best shape of my life.
I'm blown away at the consistency of my health.
There is so much science available today that has allowed me to take total control of my health.

I do not break long in between fasts before starting another but I do get 2 very healthy meals in the short break, I start again by 2:30-4pm. To add will be 65yrs in March.

Thank you for the explanations about this subject, you're so good about making it clear. Dr. Hashmi I find it too hard to plan three meals that are kidney disease friendly. This is why I'm looking at intermittent fasting eating two meals a day. I'm seventy years old with a GFR of 47 on the last blood test a few days ago. I was concerned with 47 because my last blood test 4 months ago the GfR of 64.
My creatinine level went up a lot and I was trying to figure out why. Then I realized the night before my blood test I worked out and I think that's why it went up from 107 the blood test before to 139 on yesterday's blood test.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. It is very appreciated. I had some protein in my urine back in September (diabetic and hypertensive) and was concerned. I started researching and found your channel which I am grateful for. The only reason I knew that diabetes and/or hypertension can lead to kidney issues is bc in August my Sister in Law was do with CKDstage 3b. I then next month had protein in urine and was panicked-never had it before 9or since luckily) but the surprising thing is that I had never once had been advised and have had diabetes and hypertension for 15 years that these diseases can adversely affect your kidneys-NOT ONCE. I consider myself with it so I was shocked to hear this from her-mind you not from any medical professionals. I just do not understand why I was not informed by someone. I go for yearly check ups always. I wanted to thank you for spreading this vital inform and helping save people’s lives!!

Thank you. I appreciate your precision in explaining the data as well as the physiological processes. Perhaps "elderly" are defined by age in study groups. As one of the "wise"I would find it helpful to understand the characteristics of the "elderly" in a given study. I've come to realize that I sometimes believe what is convenient to believe, e.g., perhaps fasting would be okay for me given my mostly good health and I don't feel "elderly" though my mirrors image defies that feeling.
Re: a topic -- a talk about nutrition, especially supporting retention of muscle and bone mass and tempering efforts for weight loss would be useful. Continuing a life of carrying too much weight, constantly trying to decrease weight, varying strategies up and down, I think I've wrecked my metabolism and probably that's true for so many people. Now I'm uber wise (67), weight training, feeding my body while still trying to meet weight standards. In my wisdom, I've become most concerned about muscle mass and bone density. My quackers doctor wants me to use mounjaro and eat five bites at a time (you can't even eat a small apple in five bites) plus 60 grams of protein each morning via protein powder even though my waist to height ratio is

Try to get some raw food in you with every meal. Raw food has living digestive enzymes. Cooked food has killed digestive enzymes. Nutrition is still there but no digestive enzymes to help you digest your food. If you have no digestive enzymes, you have gut problems and inflammation.
Also nuts and seeds are raw foods too. Sometimes it’s not always what eat. It can be what we don’t eat too.
Digestive enzymes feed your good gut bacteria. So try to eat salad or fruit or raw veggies n dip, just get that raw food in you to help digest the food you cook.

He also pretty much refused to eat foods that didn't exist when he was young like margerine. Their milkman delivered milk in glass bottles in a wire rack left on the porch.

Probably better he did not eat margarine. That was promoted when I was a teen. I'm 73 going on 74 now. It is so artificial and not good for you. I think you are correct that your grandfather would have done much better without so much sugary foods.

Despite my own understanding of excess red meat and protein I stupidly tried the carnivore diet (based on claims I had read of reduced inflammation and CKD recovery), got to 5 days and managed to give myself gout. I have CKD Stage 3 and Crohn’s disease and thought what have I got to lose, right? Now on Allopurinol and fastidiously watching what I eat. Thank God I do not drink alcohol. Determined to get the uric acid down to a safe level and now back to my regular mainly veggie diet with a bit of chicken and salmon now and then. Started fasting and hopefully that will help. Lifelong regular exercise habit helps.

I am on a very low protein diet aka Walser ...At my weight of about 108, I eat about 21 grams of protein a day PLUS I am using pharm grade amino acids, no meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts, very small amount of legumes..Stable since 2009! I had a twisted ureter as a kid and found out later I had damaged kidneys...EGR from 37 now in high 40's-low 50's. Worried about the cysts I have which seem to be stable, one is quite large. So, at 73, I should probably stop eating so much AFTER dinner to get those calories in...but overall, my weight is at 18 BMI...I lost weight as a vegan.....I keep track of all my food intake on Cronometer...that's how I found out I was lacking tyrosine.. I weigh everything and track my water! I have a history going back to 2009 and can go back and see how diet affects my blood tests......I'm like a scientific study! I used to get up early but over the last few years I've shifted my body timing for some reason..and love to stay in bed...OH DEAR!

Not eating at least 4-5 hrs before bedtime eliminates acid reflux; hence no need to take PPIs which are bad for health.
I can vouch for the content, because I have been doing Intermittent Fasting /Time Restricted Feeding for more than 10 years.

I am glad that you no longer have acid reflux. Coffee affects people differently.

Thank you again for the time you spent live today! I have a question that hopefully could be considered as a topic for your next video:
Do people with bilateral kidney cysts need to have their cysts removed in order to improve their microalbuminuria?
A little bit more context for the above question: My husband (Asian, 44 y.o. male) has 7 cysts in total in both of his kidneys. His nephron can’t diagnose him with APKD because he has no family history of kidney disease. Both kidneys are still normal in size, no other cysts in other abdominal organs. His eGFR is around 89, ACR 5.78 mg/mmol, BP 110-120/80-85 (diastolic creeping up). He has controlled uric acid (takes 300mg allopurinol) and diet-controlled prediabetes (normal A1C without any meds). Normal BMI, not smoking, not drinking. We live in Indonesia and don’t have many good doctors here. But his nephron in Singapore doesn’t give him any meds, worrying that his blood pressure will get too low. And he also says that cysts tend to come back once removed, so not recommended yet. But I’m worried about the effect of his protein leaking to his overall health and wondering if we need to consult another nephron.

    • @SELFPrinciple
      @SELFPrinciple  3 місяці тому

I am so sorry you and your husband are going through this. Removing the cysts would not improve the proteinuria. We can definitely cover cysts as a topic. The amount of albumin to creatinine at 5.78mg/mol or 51.15mg/g is above normal but overall still very low. Its worth talking with a nephrologist and considering lifestyle changes (plant based diet, exercise, sleep)

I am almost 74 and my situation is that I work 3rd shift three or four nights a week. So, it is hard for me to figure out when I eat. I was working five nights and I felt more normal on that schedule. I would eat around 3 am. I go to bed around 1 or 2 pm. and usually eat something around 9 am when I get home from work. My days off really mess me up and I was thinking of trying to stay awake and sleep days all the time, but I miss out on social things. In the 80's I fasted for a month and wanted to do 2 or 3 weeks of fasting with water. I am understanding that for older people this might not be a good idea. It would certainly solve when I should or should not eat. Any thoughts? I really prefer periodic fasting, but I am concerned now after hearing that older people do not get the same benefit as younger people. I do not have kidney disease, but before my knee replacement I used aspirin for about three years. I got interested in kidney problems because my dog's numbers are slightly elevated and she has been drinking a lot and peeing more often. She's on antibiotics just in case it is an infection. If not better, it is likely she is beginning CKD. Trying to figure out what approach will be best if she does have CKD. some recommend low phosphorus and low protein and some carnivore doctors say protein is not the problem. It's so confusing.

First of all I am 86….so I know your answer and I wont ask the question. What I want to know…..Is eating every day between 10 am and 6 pm all right? I am hypothyroid and I take my thyroid medication at 9 AM. I wait an hour before eating and I don’t like eating after 6PM. I picked 9 AM because I sometimes like to sleep a little bit longer so after experimation I decided 9 am was the best time. I take my medication with a full glass of water but I wait at least 3/4 of an hour before I have a cuppa coffee and then I drink regularly the rest of the day including the evening. This was what I decided to do long before I listened to this program . Now I’m wondering if I’m actually harming myself by restricting my eating between 10 and six every day. I am not sure from what you were saying if you were talking about intermittent fasting as something, you do two or three times a week. I have researched of intermittent fasting in the past but in this case I really did not think of it. Now in my case we’re talking about seven days a week so I would like an answer if at all possible. I hope I get it from someone. If you or the literature thinks this is unhealthy, what could I do?Eat until 7 PM?

  • @DD_11111

Tip...start with no eating between 12 and 8pm and progress to what he's talking about over a week or so. It's less stressful than trying to start by having 4 hrs of no food before bed time. Personally I can't sleep if I am that hungry.
