- On the latest episode of The Solid Verbal college football podcast, we take a look at a number of teams and their quest to hit, at least what we perceive to be, their absolute ceiling. On part one, we discuss Dan Lanning's Oregon Ducks, Brent Key's Georgia Tech Yellowjackets, Marcus Freeman's Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Gus Malzahn's UCF Knights, and Shane Beamer's South Carolina Gamecocks. We take a look at how long, based on recruiting, stability, schedule, geography, and faith in improvement, it'll take for these teams to be in a 12 and 14 team College Football Playoff discussion in November.

When Ty is THIS cautious about Notre Dame, it means they are going to be GOOOOD! Bookmark it.
UCF finally has a chance at the playoffs, that's the only goal this season.
Oregon Fan here, dont forget about Ole Miss their top 5ish, thwyvare stacked
Go Knights!
As a South Carolina fan that segment on my team was harrowing. 8 wins?? If that’s “It” then why play the game? The “It” for every program should be a national championship. You think fans should be happy with 8 wins?? I agree that a program has to build to that potential and consistently win 8 games to get to winning championships but damn guys, 8 wins is the ceiling? Might as well stop watching college football all together if that is “It”. Appreciate the insight and analysis but if that’s all we can accomplish under Beamer then that is a depressing thought
D: I hear ya, but is there any modern evidence of a program who doesn't recruit on a top 10 level or consistently challenge for double digit wins competing to be in a national championship conversation? Not saying that can't be South Carolina someday with years upon years of building, but is there anything about the Shane Beamer tenure that realistically says that that's conceivably on the table?
@@solidverbal if South Carolina gets to 9 wins in the regular season then they have earned a right to be in the 12 team playoff with their schedule. Beamer was one away from that in 2022. Is that really that impossible to conceive?
@@MrAndrew428 And four wins away last year with the same coach and QB. South Carolina has the unfortunate reality of Clemson annually, but scheduled three cupcakes to compensate and inflate the win total, so I suppose in this universe in which South Carolina bounces back in a huge, unforeseen way (current win total O/U is 5.5), you'd measure wins and losses and schedule (OOC and in-conf) against whoever else is 9-3, and even still, 9-3 doesnt automatically get you in. An SEC team went 9-3 (with the Heisman-winning QB!) and finished 13th. Same for LSU in 2022. And in 2021, an SEC team (who also has an annual quality OOC opponent and three patsies) finished 9-3 and outside the top 20. An 8-4 SEC team just ahead of them. Can't automatically say anything.
@@solidverbal fair points! I meant to say in this year with this schedule it’s far more likely to get us in compared to a Big 12 team that doesn’t play 7 ranked opponents
If winning a natty is 'it' for all programs then no one should watch college football.
Go Jackets!!!
Utah with Rising should be a scary prospect for any foe in the B12.
Much longer conversation on Utah / Cam Rising coming this Thursday!
I hope you're right about the NATS. I'm a pup and it sucks when the traditional rivalry oppo stinks. Good video, guys.
Go Jackets surprise is a coming
Listing off that SC schedule makes me wonder why Miami fans eager to move to SEC when they haven’t won they haven’t won the ACC. The schedule don’t let up now that OU and Texas joined
Dan learns from his mistakes so I feel good. Go ducks 🦆
Where’s the College Football 25 talk?
We will talk about it more in the coming episodes, but this is a national CFB podcast, not a CFB 25 podcast.
@@solidverbal not yet 😂
that was a dumb question... what if Dillon Gabriel goes down ... What if Milroe, Beck, Dart, Nico, Howard goes down ?
Gabriel has had pretty significant injury history as a college QB
@@solidverbal So had Penix jr ... and many others. Near every team goes backwards if their starting QB goes down
Tackle depth is the one thing that concerns me most for Oregon. The other is I wonder how often they will be able to get sacks rushing just 4. These are definitely issues, but the fact these are my biggest concerns right now speaks to the quality and depth Lanning has built up.
Are you talking about Offensive Tackle? this makes no sense if you are watching the team
@@daveallen9950 Yes, the starters are phenomenal but there is questionable depth after Conerly and Cornelius. I do think Kawika Rogers looked good in the spring game but still... Am I missing something?
@@matthummel465the ducks will rotate as they always do and the depth will be well seasoned heading into conference play. Silva, Strother, Picksrd, Iuli all stand to get good reps and they are upperclassmen.
Somevteams will never achieve that national title escalon. Does that mean you can't be a fan?
ND has proven it can play against any team in the country. We've also proven that we can lose to any team in the country. Ohio State, Clemson, USC, UGA ... the question for ND is whether they have the maturity and beast mode to deliver the knock out punch in these elite games and simply to win all of the other games. The test is whether ND goes undefeated. Because they should. That will tell us how mature they are.
ND is known for nearly always losing the big games, and getting beat by a bad team nearly every year. Look back through NDs bowl games over the last couple decades.
ND was competitive against Georgia once and OSU.. but is that really what you want to brag about?
The best thing that recently happened to ND is Kelly leaving. He is incapable of winning a natty. When LSU tires of mediocrity they will fire him and pay him a king's ransom not to coach.
☘️☘️☘️
If UCF gets out of the Swamp with , they will be in the playoff talk. . . and they will beat the gators like they stole something.
🦆🦆🦆🦆
Was going to sub, but your analysis of ND shows that you don't know alot about that program.
Thanks for weighing in, good luck on your ongoing quest to find that elusive mind that can even approach your, let’s face it, iconic level of ND knowledge. It’s not easy, but we salute your efforts.
@@solidverbal I listen to Irish Breakdown and Josh Pate. The two sharpest analytical takes CFB has to offer imho. No disrespect intended, but after listening to ND insiders and then hearing others that aren’t as familiar with the program, one can tell… Have a blessed day.
@@AlbanyND be more specific, show your work. the show is cohosted by an ND diehard since the early '90s, what's his blind spot?
Gave thumbs 👍 for Pate but definitely not for IB.
ND overrated as usual any great team will annihilate them!
0regon has a zero on their helmets for a reason, it's never going to happen.
Will the loser of the B1G champ game go to the CFP?
Only Oregon has a remote shot of these teams. And even then they will need Heisman caliber QB play to go with a top 10 defense to pull it off. I hope and pray they do, but there’s a reason only 6-10 teams have a realistic chance every year.
So there's only 6-10 teams that can make a 12 team playoff??? Because that's pretty much what the convo is about here...making a 12 team playoff
Yall clearly dont watch south carolina football
Why's that?
@solidverbal my bad the guy who is the Oregon fan doesn't watch and it shows your take is all the proof stop questioning me and go study the game some more
Which take was incorrect in your opinion?
For one you didn't even know Sellers we don't need the portal for Qbs you should check our recruiting at that position since beamer and loggins have been together and Check out Landon duckworth while your at it then come back and explain that horrible take about beamer needing to go into the every year for a QB
Uuuuhhhhh ohhh ducks. Child labor by Nike and now students athletes… not so much. I’m shocked l, shocked to see gambling happening in this casino.
Here are Oregon’s single-year scores for the past eight years, with those contributing to the multi-year score of 941 in bold:
2015: 967
2016: 976
2017: 958
2018: 970
2019: 963
2021: 939
2022: 934
2023: 927
If the multi-year score released next spring drops below 930, the Ducks would be ineligible for the College Football Playoff or bowl games following the 2025 regular season, unless the NCAA grants a waiver.
This group is knows nothing about these programs they are covering. They stopped by Walmart bought a football magazine spent a few minutes skimming it and doing a video.
The magazines aren't in Walmart yet. We've been doing this since 2008. Thanks for stopping by.
They can't pronounce the names of players, coaches etc.
You build and compare off last years team not the teams from 4 plus years. This is a stupid thought
ND & Oregon are likely 12 team playoff co tenders this upcoming season. UCF, SCarl and GT, will NEVER make yhe playoff, EVER. Sad truth.
You don’t know ball
It's pretty obvious UCF is recruiting at a level they have never before. And all they have to do is win the Conference and they'll make the playoff. So saying they'll never make it is just incorrect.
Sounds like Comments from a hater 😂
GT can easily make the playoffs by just winning the acc championship… you don’t know ball.
Get back with me 20 yrs from now and I expect a humble apology and none of this ' in 20xx they should have been selected the 12th team bs' either.
Ohio not top 5, no qb and lost thiere wrs
