The Pivot took a trip to South Bend, Indiana for a special visit to one of College Football’s most sacred programs and truly gained an entire fresh perspective on the Irish’s historical winning lineage.
Yes that’s right, Ryan, Fred and Channing are sitting with Head Football Coach of the Fighting Irish, Marcus Freeman on his home turf, for an inside look at the football program, a special tour of campus highlighting the rich history and for an in-depth conversation covering Coach’s journey from young man to football player to father to husband to head coach.
Being named as only the second black coach in Notre Dame history, Freeman embraces the challenge to get the Fighting Irish back to championship traditions and build off last season’s winning streak after a bumpy start as the head coach. Pulling from his roots and focused on family and faith, coaching was never something Freeman dreamed of doing but rather it became his calling after his playing career took a turn.
As one of the most respected defensive players in college football and a NFL 5th round draft pick, Freeman’s professional career had a lot of promise until a few months in and results from a physical showed he had an enlarged heart valve and he would be unable to compete at the NFL level due to medical reasons. Leaning into his close relationship with former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, Freeman reached out immediately and the next day was mentoring as a college football coach, the start of a journey to becoming one of the most sought after defensive minds in football and now head coach of one of the most storied collegiate programs.
Fred asks about the values instilled in players and focus as a leader for Coach Freeman while Channing asks about the pressure of getting it right at such a prestigious school and reestablishing winning ways. As a father of six children, Coach Freeman shares with Ryan the importance of a work life blend and how he uses same approach to unify his melting pot of children at home as he does to lead the locker room of young men and his coaches. Showing by example is far more impactful than just using words.
Looking ahead to next season, Coach Freeman is ready to pick up where the team left off and continue to make an impact on and off the field.

Coach Freeman was the LBs coach my senior year playing at Purdue. His ascension in the game has been incredible to watch. Has always been a real one 💯
Im born and raised and still live in South Bend within a mile of ND, and tho I’m not a big ND fan I am a HUGE fan of Coach Freeman. Exceptional coach and even better man. The way he embraces the community is top notch! We, as residence of this ‘college town’ haven’t seen love from the FOOTBALL coach since Lou Holtz!
Love this interview!!
Truy honesty
As a USC fan I liked this episode. FIGHT ON!
He just made me appreciate him not only because of his message, but also the fact he is half black and half Asian and I have children that are half black and Asian as well and they’re going to get all types of stereotypes and pressures as they continue to get older and he is showing that they’re no different than anyone that is one race. With hard work, discipline, dedication and purpose they can be anything or anyone they want to be.
It's either white or non white and he knows he's black
Half what lol Channing is half white lol but in the system of white supremacy he’s the hard E.R … i wish some of u confused bozos stop running from your diaspora roots 💯💯💯💯
🔥🔥🔥👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Very well put. That's what it's all about. Representation is everything!
I truly hope someone or some people are inspired by him that can relate to him...
It's sad people like @Bey11ktb always want to spread their stupidity and ignorance. It's quite possible he knows of both his nationalities... everyone isn't as ignorant as you @Bey11ktb
As a ND fan, I wouldn't want anyone other than Coach Freeman leading us. He is a great leader and will be a great head coach.
They just offered one of my kids I coach. This episode is special for me
Which kid
Jarquez Carter Newberry high school in Florida class of 25 DT
congrats coach. it takes a village.
@@JeremyJGGreenI'm pretty sure they landed a DT from Miami in the '25 class, that's cool they offered one of your kids as well. I know that has to feel great as a coach, good luck in life and keep grinding.
Good job coach! One of the biggest accomplishments a HS coach could get I imagine.
As a Notre Dame fan, I am proud that this man is representing the University of Notre Dame. There is no one else I’d rather have, at this moment, leading this group of young men into becoming responsible young men in our society. I hope Coach Freeman wins a NC at Notre Dame, and the leadership gives this man a blank check once he does.
Amen!!
@@renemartinez6014 Totally agree! Hope Coach is wildly successful... Just not against my Wolverines! Go Blue!
Amen brother. In Freeman we trust! ☘️🏈💚
1842 all day long for me since I was 12yrs old
If he does well at ND, and if Ryan Day leaves for the NFL soon, OSU will back up the brinks truck for Freeman or Luke Fickell. It would be difficult for either of those two guys to turn down the Buckeyes regardless of how well they're doing at their current situation.
Pivot y’all should do a career highlight show of Fred Taylor. A lot of people don’t know how much of a beast he was. Tuck away in Jacksonville
UNCLE FRED was a BEAST
As a fan of USC, I really like this guy and his vision to be so young. wishing him the best.
We need more long form conversations with Coach Freeman! All it takes is a few minutes of Marcus taking and I’m ready to run through a brick wall for this man.
literally! I see why his players love him so much
When he said, "Chase winning, not money. " gave me chills. That cemented my earlier comment. GO IRISH ♻️♻️♻️
We definitely have a shot to create something special this year.... tough schedule, yes.... but imagine If we got through it unscathed...fire
Worth the time to listen! I was already a Freeman fan, but the way he speaks about his wife and mother shows what kind of man Marcus Freeman is. As a mom of 2 boys, I hope they respect their wives (and me!) the way Coach does for the ladies in his life.
The Pivot is so genuine, so authentic, so real and connects with the guest, and the audience in a way that is raw, and inspirational. It rekindles the best values a lot of us experienced as former college student-athletes. Appreciate y'all!
Lmao yea this shit is the opposite of real my friend.
This is BET you’re watching, but with sports an not music
Man you guys always ask the RIGHT questions that pivot into a deep story for your guests that gives so much insight. I went to college graduated with a degree in communications and productions. You’d think you all went to school for this for years amazing job 💪🏾
As a SC fan I don’t like ND but I really do like and appreciate Coach Freeman
We don’t like you either good luck when Caleb leave . It’s over for y’all
Seriously, how can anyone dislike Notre Dame?
@@billweber1422basically every reason people don't like Dallas - Also a Notre Dame fan.
Now i have to be a Notre Dame fan. Coach is for real
No better representative of ND than Coach Freeman. Glad he's on our side.
As a long time Notre Dame Fan I am extremely excited that Coach Freeman is the Coach for Notre Dame! He is the perfect fit for the modern landscape of College Football at Notre Dame! Also being a young black coach and awesome family man is definitely inspiring. GO IRISH ☘️
Rooting for you mr freeman. Best of luck on the upcoming season
You heard it here first. This dude will bring my Irish a title.
All the Notre Dame fans I know are extremely proud of Coach Freeman and how he represents the University I remember when he was the defensive coordinator I was watching I Notre Dame game like three games in and I turned to my mother and I said that's our next Coach you can just feel the charisma when you watch him 👏☘️🏈
Marcus Freeman!! Huber Heights Wayne Warrior alumni. Went to the same high school as him. I remember always hearing about how beastly he was on the field. Him and the DB coach Mike Mickens both went to Wayne.
Great show. Much respect to Coach Freeman.
Time to return the program back to the glory days…. Odds stacked against us due to curriculum and grade requirements for entry but it’s no excuse for finding players that can excel at both. Notre Dame is back!!!
“What though the odds be great or small,” my friend. This is most definitely our guy.
Craaaazzzzy... just when My Irish about to Ball because of Coach Freeman.. Coach Prime getting Colorado Together.. Most Exciting College 🏈 Season in 30 years 🧙🏿♂️✌🏿
When is the Marcus Freeman attire line be available to the public?
Super Dope episode. Coach Freeman is a valid dude.
I have nothing but respect for this man and everything he's about. If you're a parent of a highly ranked recruit that can get into ND, you're definitely listening to coach Freeman and what ND can do for your kid.
He made me feel more confident in the route I’m going for my goals and aspirations.
The pivot coming to Indiana of all places is crazy. 💯
THE PIVOT IS THE BEST SPORT PODCAST ON PERIOD!!!
Awesome! Mike Tomlin like on the collegiate level 🔥🤜🏾🤛🏾💪🏾
No seriously.
Def got them vibes.
Love MF ENTHUSIASM‼️‼️💯, IM AN ND ALUM, MBA from the Mendoza School of Business, GO IRISH☘💚
When Coach Freeman was The Defensive Coordinator for The Cincinnati Bearcats, he turned that defense into a formidable unit. If he can turn The Bearcats' defense around, I know that he would do a damn good job for The Fighting Irish Of Notre Dame.
My daughter just graduated from NotreDame! NotreDame football is everything. Was at the coldest game in Years! 19 degrees and it snowed at halftime!! Best time with the fam!! And it was senior nite! Got a chance to hit the field after the game!!
Irish fan here... I absolutely loved this! Marcus freeman is a top notch guy that brings so much to the university... i stand behind him 100%!!! Thanks pivot for showing my guy some love.
Let's go Coach Freeman ☘️☘️☘️🔥🔥🔥
Awesome coach and human ! Great show Pivot!☘️🏈
Not a ND fan but Coach is 100%
Damn, I like this coach, which means a part of me has to root for Notre Dame. ...That's a tough confession.
I love this guy and I love Notre Dame . He’s gonna win a championship at ND I believe in him with everything In my body.
A FANTASTIC interview! Love coach Freeman and absolutely am a new fan of the pivot. Well done gentlemen!
Salute To Coach Freeman💯👍
This show continues to get better and better every week
Coach Freeman as a man, a coach, a leader, and especially a father I am a fan for life. Go Irish ☘
Great conversation. Coach thank you for mentioning being an example through action this is very important. And ones actions must be positive of courage and love.
Finally got around to watching! It was engaging from beginning to end! The authenticity is always so refreshing! Another excellent show!! 👑👑👑
Pivot let's go 💯
I’m a Clemson Tiger through and through, but it’s hard for me not to like Marcus Freeman. Today I’m a huge fan. Side note: Ryan Clark, you’re the coolest Kappa I know, I ain’t gon’ hold that against you
🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Glad to hear. Been hearing stuff but coach Prime been looking good so I'm not worried, I prayed for you coach, so I'm not worried.

I really really do Appreciate U for that. Much❤Luv and ✊ Respect to U FreddyT. Oh b4 I forget shout out to Chann and RC for all the Hard Work and Dedication that U all put in, Day In and Day Out.
Love this!!!! Go Notre Dame!!!!!
Get Tony Elliot up there from UVA. Black coach dealing with all that went on last year in his first head coaching experience.
Look...ND fan or not. Freeman is a dude. I'm watching all they games this year...hope bro gets one and it might be this year with Hartman. We shall see...
Great guy very impressive. You guys are the best in the business.
Great Show ☘️☘️☘️🔥🔥🔥
This was my introduction to this podcast. They do an awesome job, great interview. Go Irish!
I'm a die Hard Seminoles fan but Love Coach Marcus from the Fighting Irish
You all are among the best interviewers!
Watched him at OSU and so proud of him coaching now
Thanks Ryan and Much Love to our Leader Marcus Freeman
Another intriguing guest, most importantly a interview with questions that not only give insight into the person but also what's great about those that inspire and motivate future leaders. Regardless of whatever they're future leads them to become. Being the best that each person on the team comes through loud and clear in this q & a. Thanx again, as usual. The bar gets raised with each and every guest
Another great interview!
We gotta love Channing. 😂
Great Season last year Great Coaching Adjustments
After Brian Kelly left, I read way too much blowback about this guy. He was coaching with a less-than-talented roster and was trying to fix what Brian Kelly broke.
Why so much pushback on this guy?
The best podcast out there, but you definitely need to get Charlie strong on here!
Amazing Content Gentlemen
@The Pivot this is why we need Jim Tressal and Maurice Clarette on the podcast let's Go
This will be sent to every recruit as it should be.
His wife is the *perfect* example of a high-quality woman. She held that man down while he was at his absolute lowest point.
That queen absolutely deserves all the spoils of life he's blessing her with because she stood 10 toes down when that man was at the lowest point of his life.
I have no fucking clue who this dude is but this was a good interview 🤷🏾♂️ the pivot makes damn near everybody they interview interesting
Even after the interview you don’t know? Marcus Freeman head coach of Norte Dame. Just an ordinarily.
@@deloresmatt8643 yes now I know 🤦🏾♂️
Great show guys. Good luck newt season coach freeman
Channing: “Freddy he mad..😂😂😂” 54:51 Fred: “Don’t be mad.”😂😂😂
Soo college coaching tour? Miami next?
What a great and fun interview guys. Great job.
Marcus a Brother 😂😂
Good show guys. Go Coach Freeman!!!
Didn’t know y’all came to the city😭
Another great show 👏🏼. Buckeye Nation pay attention to what he said; they look out for each other and now he has taken that message to his new post
Coach seems to be a great motivator!! Pivot, I have a request. Would love to see you all interview one of the golfers that went to LIV about the primary reason for switching tours and the tension of defecting.
Since the PGA merged with LIV I don't think that will happen unfortunately.
Tomlin 2.0
No disrespect to the greatest of coach tomlin.
But he has IT!
Stay tuned. Keep ya ears to the ground, Freeman JUST STARTING.
This podcast just keeps finding hidden gems and it’s amazing
Great interview for black coach in south bend Indiana
I'm a Notre Dame fan who likes Marcus Freeman . . . but on another note, you guys are always well prepared and researched and ask great questions.

Best Video yet🔥🔥☘️☘️☘️
Marcus Freeman IS Notre Dame. He represents Notre Dame perfectly. An amazing man. A leader of young men. He will bring a national title to ND.
Loved this episode. Loved Marcus Freeman when he was at OSU. Definitely rooting for him......except of course when they play Ohio State. And YES. I was one of those fans who aired his a** out for his comments about making the same mistake twice....lol. You live and you learn. O-H!!!
As a ND fan i understood where OSU fans were coming from, but you guys know he poured his heart out for that university and he absolutely loves OSU. Good luck this year and i can't wait to watch the OSU game at ND...
