  • On the latest episode of The Solid Verbal college football podcast, we take a look at Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze's Auburn, Brent Pry's Virginia Tech, Luke Fickell's Wisconsin, and Kyle Whittingham's Utah, and how close they are to achieving their absolute ceiling, whatever that is. This includes looking at schedule, recent history, internal expectations, roster management, where things stand with big positions on the roster, of course in a 12 or 14 College Football Playoff universe.

Auburn fan here. Enjoying the stuff you guys put out! Lots of thoughtful dialogue and I can tell y’all do your homework. Auburn fans expect to compete for championships again, not just 9 or 10 wins. Freeze is a great play caller and elite recruiter. 2026 we should be in the conversation for an SEC championship.

Fellow Auburn as well and I agree with the original post. However, I am expecting a big leap in 2025 rather than 2026.

I feel like we will be slightly more competitive this year than next only because of all the seniors we are losing. We will be losing our entire defensive front and offensive backfield. Hopefully I'm wrong either way WAR DAMN EAGLE!

Auburn fan here. It was nice to watch a cerebral analysis without all the screaming and cursing. I mean on each of the programs not just Auburn. Certainly Payton Thorne and the qb room is the trouble spot. We all know that. Hugh Freeze cane in last year and began his tenure totally focused on recruiting. He has used the portal extremely adroitly and carefully. Freeze intends to build that locker room, i.e. culture by doing his rebuild by way of HS recruiting, and this IS a rebuild. He recruitied a 4 man elite freshman WR room and 2 more top talent receivers from the portal. He and his staff have dramatically improved the OL through the portal, recruiting and guys stepping up. Both those rooms were trouble areas last year. The DL going into 2024 was highly suspect. Freeze/DJ Durkin/Vontrel Williams brought in 4 struds through the portal that will allow more rotation and who can generate a pass rush. They've upgraded at TE. The RB room is absolutely outsranding. They're currently recruitibg there as they did not take a RB last year. Hugh and Staff are intensely recruiting HS QBs and going all in on the most highly rated kids. He was very purposeful in that he did bot seripusly pursue a portal qb. He has explained that in today's NIL and portal environment, the highest rated kids want a chance to play. Multiple 4/5 star HS & portal qbs means nobody knows if they have a real shot. Hugh is exceptionally transparent and tells it like it is. Coach speak is rather unusual. He wants a kid to inow he's got a shot at the job and he believes that position is key to the locker room. He's trying to build success, upon success. He wants to develop Waljer White, 8th rated qb last year and red shirt him this year. Sane with whoever he brings in this year. It's said Auburn has a shot at Juju Lewis. We'll see. This year they've put way more and better weapons around Thorne. With this WR room 8-4 is doable. 7-5 would be disappointing. But winning the bowl game (unlike last year) and games they're suppised to win will make them better. No way they should have lost to NMSU and they had Bama beat. I think Auburn has a shot at the playoff in 2025

For VT, the inconsistency could have been a team finding its identity and gaining confidence.

Overall they definitely played better as the season went on. They lost to Purdue with Wells as QB and it took.a few games for Drones to settle in. After that they won or were in every game but the UL game.

I agree as a VT fan I thought they'd be recruiting better by now. That being said I think they'll be very good this year but next year may be a step back.

Yeah I dont know if I'm buying Auburn is better in 2025 with a QB that's never started a game (if they don't go portal again). You get to find out real quick seeing as they open on the road in Waco against Baylor. I just think losing a QB with 50+ starts and a ton of seniors is gonna make it difficult but maybe the overall state of the roster at that point helps em through the growing pains.
Thorne may not have an NFL arm but he led Michigan St. to an 11 win season so Im also not buying he can't get Auburn to 9 if they have better play at receiver and cohesion on offensive identity. Guess we shall see.

Kiffin has done a fantastic job finally helping Ole Miss climb out of the hole created by the Freeze debacle that them NCAA issues and forfeits. Not sure why Auburn didn’t seem interested enough to go get Kiffin. He has toned down a lot and might be best game caller around.

They got a better coach for less money to come to a program that has better facilities, a bigger fan base, and deeper pockets when it comes to competing for championships. Kiffen was asking for too much money... He wanted that job. He would have bolted for Bama in a second too if they had gave him even a moment of consideration but clearly they didn't.

How humiliating. You see this Auburn Fam, we are so bad now we are being compared to Wisconsin, ole miss, and Utah.....😬....hang in there, we are finally doing the right things now we are just paying the price for no money in football for those 25 years besides a few things and a scoreboard. Remember these dark days and don't vote down improvements in football facilities.

Ole Miss isn’t some program that’s never had success. They had more SEC titles than Auburn for over half of a century lol. Only in 2010 did Auburn surpass Ole Miss. The tables are simply turning once again.
