This year I don't think you can tell the story of Brent Key (or even Haynes King) without talking about Buster Faulkner. You should do a video on him sometime.
I thought Key at first was just going to be your typical interim head coach during the #24 Pitt game back in Oct of 2022 after Collins was fired but he proved the whole world wrong that he was worthy being a HC and handle things respectfully for the players and got them a surprising win. This would also lead to him to another ranked win game at North Carolina who were ranked #13 and despite them being rusty in the 1st half they managed to shock the world again by beating them with 21-unanswered points and they won the game without their starting QB and their third string QB. We’ve won 3 games 3 years in a row and haven’t made a bowl game in 5 years, now we’re above 500 with a bowl game and several upsets and a close game vs now top 10 Louisville. So yeah Id say we’ve risen quite a bit
I disagree. Key went 0-12 as the OC/OL Coach at UCF in 2015 & was a joke as OL Coach under Collins -- can't coach or recruit and has the intelligence and character of a Kidney Bean -- Fritz & Chadwell took lower paying Coach jobs and ARE BOTH in the Top 25 at Group of Five Schools far superior to Key's Jackets that probably won't make a Bowl next year with a tougher schedule
The admin talked to Fritz and things didn't work out. I never saw any indications that Chadwell was interested in the job either. It was not a particularly attractive job at the time. Either way, if you're a GT then get on board and let's do what we can. There has definitely been an improvement.@@richardlellip.e.m.b.a.7969
@@richardlellip.e.m.b.a.7969 your braindead, you act like one position coach makes the team good or bad. Right Now, Key is 10-9, 4-0 vs. RANKED ACC teams and 4-3, VS Ranked teams. Went 5-3 in the ACC this year which is 4th place. At lot better from dead last where they were predicted to finish
I think Tech has the right guy now. Their recruiting pool is limited due to academics. They have barriers that many schools do not have. I recall an old story from a UGA coach many years ago, He said he always took high-powered Math textbooks on his recruiting trips to see players who were torn between Tech and UGA. He showed them what they would have to master at Tech to graduate and more often than not that sealed the deal for UGA:)
GT Fan and Alumnus here. I've watched all your GT videos and this one is great like the others. Looking back at the 20 years before Paul Johnson's retirement ('98 - '18), we were a consistently good, occasionally great team. In those 20 years, we went to bowl game 18 (90%) times, were ranked at least once throughout the season 15 times (75%), and ended the season ranked 8 times (40%). Also have some great conference runs, winning twice and being runner up another 3 times. While the Paul Johnson era was less good near the end, I don't think you could have asked for much better from a program with tough academics and low athletic spending. Geoff Collins was pretty bad, you made three videos on the point, so I won't belabor the point but 3-9 three times in a row, combined with so many losses being absolute blow outs, was rough. He was so bad the AD that hired him was fired too, which was bittersweet since he was an alumnus, but we got an alumnus coach now and a great AD in J Batt who I think is young and understands what needs to be done in the current collegiate athletic landscape. Like you said the Bowling Green game this year was horrible, but we honestly should not have beat Miami, so it evens out in the end in my mind. This year we finished 4th out of 14 in the ACC, and had a real shot being 2nd if we had beat Louisville, which is amazing to say for a 1st year head coach with a team that was previously bowl ineligible. The players and fans like Brent, we got a good recruiting class lined up for next year (33rd overall which is amazing for GT), and King will be back next year as well. The future is looking up for returning to consistently good, occasionally great; going beyond that will be another discussion regarding if a program like GT can ever feasibly muster the resources to compete against the biggest and best teams routinely. The future of the ACC is also spotty, which worries me as well as I don't think GT would come out on top in an ACC realignment.
I love to see GT getting some love. It's incredible what Key has done. Tech very well could have been 7-4 or 8-3 (loss to Louisville late and bowling green). Going 6-6 and seeing a bowl game this year is all I ask for. I'm pleased with how well the season has gone.
I know this is a bit of a stretch. But we were up against Louisville for most of the game, played tough against Ole Miss before they ran up the score at the end. This could have easily been an 8 or 9 win season. Really looking forward to this team’s progress next year
@@ryanlexander7661if they continue to progress like they have I think they can win one. I’m not saying they’ll be better than UGA at any point or dominate them, but they can definitely play a tough game similar to the one last weekend and actually squeak out a win. Its not much but it would be an improvement on the last 7 years
Key went 0-12 as the OC/OL Coach at UCF in 2015 & was a joke as OL Coach under Collins -- can't coach or recruit and has the intelligence and character of a Kidney Bean -- Fritz & Chadwell took lower paying Coach jobs and ARE BOTH in the Top 25 at Group of Five Schools far superior to Key's Jackets that probably won't make a Bowl next year with a tougher schedule.
He won the team over. A team that looks down in their HC is a broken team. Also, he and the o line coach have done a great job with probably the best o line and ages.
Ppl forget that Georgia Tech was a powerhouse in the past. They have won multiple National Championships in their history. Including their last one in 1990. Split the NC with Colorado that season.
Good and fair video. I am very thrilled with how well Coach Key has lead this team this year. I am also as thrilled with the season that Haynes has had. No, we won't beat UGAg with almost certainty. But as you noted, we are in a bowl and two years ago, a bowl game seemed years away. I was hopeful we could make a bowl coming into this season and I thought we would. It's even more gratifying given that many of the "expert" felt we would win 3-4 games, which I always thought undersold us. Of course, after BG, 3-4 was looking more likely but the team responded. Sure, I would love to upset UGAg, but I will be very, very happy to finish 6-6 and then to hopefully actually get a WINNING SEASON if we can get a bowl win! If you had asked me two years ago today about a bowl game and a winning season, I would have sadly laughed.
Coach Key is likely going to become one of the top coaches in Georgia Tech history. When your coach loves the institution he represents and the young men he coaches you have a winner and you keep him.
Well... that uga game was pretty competitive;) GT wins 8 games next year. 4 of 5 OL return. Lead RB returns. Top 3 WRs return while getting back their superstar WR Leo Blackburn from ACL surgery. Plus they are already looking at the portal hard. Also, they are about to flip WR Gatling from Texas A&M, and will likely end up with a top 30 2024 High School class and top 20 High School and transfers class.
Georgia Tech Football is showing America that smart student athletes can compete in a Power 5 Conference. This coaching need to continue recruiting hungry young man that want a college degree and those with chips on their shoulders. They should North Carolina and University of Miami how to play team football.
As a lifelong Georgia Tech fan who was there in Athens when Joe Hamilton, who should’ve won the Heisman in ‘99 but lost to Ron Dayne mostly because the former Badger broke the all time rushing record, hit Kelly Campbell for the game winner to beat the Dawgs. I’ll be honest though, I couldn’t stand Paul Johnson. Yes he won an Orange Bowl (that was the first year during the college football playoff though so it wasn’t a BCS bowl rewarded to one of the best 8 teams in the country since it was the first year of the CFP) but we did beat Mississippi State and Dak Prescott in that game and the Bulldogs were #1 earlier that season. Johnson thrived early at Tech because although his scheme was absolutely brilliant and he’s one of the greatest X’s and O’s coach in football history at any level, he was a terrible recruiter because whether you’re a lineman, QB, WR or even a RB, you’re not developing skills you need as a pro running the triple option. Johnson took full advantage of a loaded roster left by Chan Gailey, who was literally the polar opposite of Johnson: An incredible recruiter who, when it came to running things on the field, might as well have assumed he was coaching futbol instead of football. Had Gailey had enough sense to not have Reggie Ball, statistically one of the worst QBs in college football history at any level (who started all 4 years, 3 with Calvin Johnson) at QB and literally anyone else (heck, they would’ve been worlds better just having Calvin run the wildcat or RPO’s and making little 5-10 yard dink downs or just using his incredible size and speed to run defenders over it’s possible Gailey is the one who retires this season, goes down as one of the greatest coaches in Tech history (which is saying something because we had John Heisman who led us to this day the largest win in CFB history, a 222-0 drubbing of Cumberland, Bobby Dodd and Bobby Ross, who won a national championship at Tech in 1990 before making an ill fated decision to leave to go and coach the Lions in the NFL). That’s how great of a recruiter Gailey was. But you hit everything on the head and that’s why I’m subscribed to your channel. We have a brutal schedule next year but Haynes King was absolutely phenomenal (2800 passing yards 700 rushing yards 38 total TDs 16 INTs) considering how limited he was in terms of weapons. Eric Singleton runs a 10.19 100 meter dash (faster than any time Tyreek Hill has ever run) but unfortunately he was a true freshman and you can tell he just needs more reps as he split his time between football and track in high school and at 5’11” he plays smaller than his size. Those things should improve though. He had over 700 yards and 7 TDs I believe. Our #2 option is another burner in sophomore Malik Rutherford who is much more seasoned at playing receiver but doesn’t quite have Singleton’s speed and at 5’8” that’s a problem. That’s one of the reasons why tight end and UGA transfer Brett Seither had 7 catches on the season, 4 for touchdowns. I feel like if our top 2 receivers keep developing and we can pick up a solid possession receiver the offense will be near unstoppable. Haynes King had a phenomenal season showing why he was a 5 star recruit at one point but he would’ve had an even better campaign had he had receivers with more experience. A lot of his interceptions were on his receivers. Tech has a brutal schedule next year but I feel like this team is a couple players on the DLine away from being a factor in the ACC which is why losing top sack man Kyle Kennard to South Carolina in the portal really hurt. But if there’s someone who can problem solve that, my trust is in Brent Key. Great stuff Scott. Love your content and style.
every preseason, I pick a team that I think is going to exceed expectations and have a surprisingly great season, like 10+ wins out of nowhere. This season, I picked Mizzou, and was right. Last season, I picked Kansas State, and was right. It’s still way too early for me to lock in a 2024 pick, but GT has been one of my frontrunners for a while.
Credit where it is due, Bowling Green played out of their minds. The picture of that one handed grab by their receiver pretty much summed it up. This is the beauty (and pain) of CFB summed up.
It is all relative. You can still get tickets for 10 bucks. At another school about 90 miles away they once fired a coach the year the team won 10 games. Tech will forever live in the shadow of the other school unless they find a way to spend hundreds of millions to upgrade the staff and recruit the best players. If tech only got half of the players inside 50 miles of campus they would have a top 20 class every year. My daughter is in the band and this is her first bowl game (Tampa)
I'm an old fart...been a Tech fan since the 50s...remember some great teams under Bobby Dodd, then slowly but surely Tech struggled to compete against top teams. Now Brent Key has made me believe again.
What is the measurement for an insane rise? 6-6 is tough to seem insane. Not trying to take away that the team is miles improved. And I think they will keep improving.
I like Key, but as a Tech fan the right answer was and is Willie Fritz. Fritz has had a conference title, a Rose bowl win and only lost 2 games since Key was hired. One of the loses was a close loss to the same ole miss team that blew out Tech.
I’m not a tech fan so maybe I don’t understand. But tech has def improved but to call this a “impossible rise” makes it sound like they’re a really good team and rn I’m not sure they’re even decent. A loss to bowling green and a loss to BC. And the wins include beating mighty virginia, mighty Syracuse, mighty SC State, mighty wake forest, a jekyll and Hyde unc team, and a Miami team that beat themselves. So I think while this is def improvement for the program it’s important to look at the context and pump the brakes. They aren’t there yet and when they played the bigger competition this year they lost to Clemson, UGA, Ole Miss, and Louisville and some of those losses were heavy defeats. Louisville was a major comeback that was embarrassing for the tech program. So just important that the program don’t get ahead of themselves and recognize they’ve improved but they’ve got a long way to go.
Suggested topics: "TMac" not among 10 Biletnikoff semifinalists and the WWE element of cfp selection committee: Undeserving teams r ranked 15-25 in cfp to prop up both the ACC & SEC rn.
Paul Johnson kill Tech football with running the option that killed recruiting. What top QB or wide receiver coming to Tech with a triple option offense? They miss out on Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, all out of the Metro Atlanta.
I believe if they never left the SEC they would be a top tier program still to this day and UGA wouldn’t have became what they did because back in the 50s and 60s when they were SEC they were the top program in GA.
The rise of georgia going from the mid 60s and the fall tech from the mid 60s has more to do with Vince Dooley arriving at georgia and Bobby Dodd leaving tech but them leaving the conference hurt them for sure
I don’t think Key is going anywhere. It’s probably why he came here from Alabama and stuck around through Collins. Bet he’s had his eyes on the GT HC job for quite some time.
Nobody cares about academic standards, Vanderbilt has high academic standards. They also never got scared or made stupid decisions in the athletic department and left the SEC.

Not sure if you actually watched GT play the had some of the worst Qb play in the power 5, he only put up huge passing yards in blowout losses and he has a TO problem
You are completely wrong. Not sure you actually watched him. He put up large passing yards in most games. Did have a turnover problem. His only problem was sliding. It got GT multiple late hit penalties, but he is going to end up crippling himself. Also, Georgia tech only had 2 blowouts all season.

Rise? Yes. Insane or impossible? Not at all. Other than getting out of the basement of the ACC, what has GT accomplished? Nothing. Thus, there's been a rise, but it's a normal rise commensurate with the regular changing fortunes of middling college football programs.

I’m happy to see this team be successful again and seeing Key finally have his recognition that he’s been working his tail off to get this job for a long time. #GoJackets

I think Tech has the right guy now. Their recruiting pool is limited due to academics. They have barriers that many schools do not have. I recall an old story from a UGA coach many years ago, He said he always took high-powered Math textbooks on his recruiting trips to see players who were torn between Tech and UGA. He showed them what they would have to master at Tech to graduate and more often than not that sealed the deal for UGA:)
sounds like Vince Dooley did that
GT Fan and Alumnus here.

Not really. Miami gave them a gift. No chance they beat UGA next 10 years. Lucky not to be 5 and 7 with Miami debacle basically giving them a bowl

Which should have been theirs outright.
They were literally running the wishbone a few years back.
Lifelong Tech fan here. Great video. We love Brent Key!
If you had asked me two years ago today about a bowl game and a winning season, I would have sadly laughed.
maybe the most celebrated 6-6 season of all time at GT

How and where should we celebrate when we beat the Gawga Bullfrawgs on Saturday?
Yes sirrrr!!
I think Brent Key is the coach for the future, just focus on recruiting the right QB. A smart QB will come to Tech
every preseason, I pick a team that I think is going to exceed expectations and have a surprisingly great season, like 10+ wins out of nowhere. This season, I picked Mizzou, and was right. Last season, I picked Kansas State, and was right. It’s still way too early for me to lock in a 2024 pick, but GT has been one of my frontrunners for a while.

Tough schedule. We all want that Bowling green game back should be 7-4 right now. Excited next year they’re bringing back almost everyone
Credit where it is due, Bowling Green played out of their minds. The picture of that one handed grab by their receiver pretty much summed it up. This is the beauty (and pain) of CFB summed up.
Tech had no business winning the Miami game though. As Bill Parcels said you are what your record says you are. 6-5 is what Tech is.
Go Jackets! Love Brent Key
I'm an old fart...been a Tech fan since the 50s...remember some great teams under Bobby Dodd, then slowly but surely Tech struggled to compete against top teams. Now Brent Key has made me believe again.

I loved Georgia Tech triple option. Oh, the option
I like Key, but as a Tech fan the right answer was and is Willie Fritz. Fritz has had a conference title, a Rose bowl win and only lost 2 games since Key was hired. One of the loses was a close loss to the same ole miss team that blew out Tech.

A forgotten member of those mid 2000’s teams is our tribal chief Roman Reigns ☝🏾
