Your explanation of the two different blade types was right on. Spinnerbait is my go to bait just about every time I hit the water. I carry about 50 of them on a rack on the inside of my rod locker lid. Over 20 years ago, I attended a BASS U. seminar on spinnerbait fishing by the late great Ken Cook. He broke down the relationship between blade type and size….head weight….target depth….and retrieve speed. It really open up a whole world of different ways to effectively fish spinnerbaits. I’ve talked to guys that say they never catch anything on a spinnerbait and sometimes I feel like I can’t catch them on anything else. 😉
Congratulations on 20,000 subscribers! One of the best channels on UA-cam. Randy Blaukat sent me to your channel a year ago and I feel like I should personally thank him for the referral.
I agree Matt, I used to throw a willow leaf all the time and then started using colorado blades at night and wow, did the size get much bigger, so what your saying is so true!!
Matt , i fish the colorado blade strike king spinner bait and really love it because it has the tendency to bring bait fish to the surface , Well last monday on the 10th i was at bass pro shop and a employee told me that fishing coffe cream color water to fire out the spinnerbait you were holding at 7:00 and after watching you sir i now not only know i made a dang good decision listening to the guy at bass pro shop but i also want to go to academy and get couple more the colorado and willow leaf spinnerbait and i also have been absolutely dieing to try out my new 3/16th oz willow leaf and colorado blade. Matt , i would like to say thank you for the time you invest in making these videos i mean in the last few weeks i have learned so much from just watching you then i ever have could inside an actual school classroom , i mean you make learning about fishing so much fun and enjoyable then a actual school classroom.
I seriously have always LOVED the strike king red eye special spinnerbait. Chartreuse or chartreuse/white mix. With the blades that have what looks like scale patterns and a red eye.
Matt, I made a "line through" Swimbait after seeing your video on it the other day. I used a 5" Megabass Spark shad purchased at a local bait store. The owner had not heard of it, but thought it was a great idea. Wants to see finished product. Anyway, it came out well and I enjoyed making it. I think it will catch fish; Maybe that lake monster! I will give you more feedback if I catch something on it.
I know I do not need to tell you this but you are a great dad. If I had interrupted my dad while he was doing something I would have gotten yelled at. Lol. This is a great video, Matt, and I mostly stick to double willow. If I need more thump, I use bigger blades
Man, this was an excellent breakdown of the difference between willow and colorado blades. I've never been much of a spinnerbait angler, and this video has educated me enough to relook/retry at how often I use them.
I like willow and Colorado combos. I feel like it gives a good all round thump and flash without being too low or high in the water. I also like single Colorado blades a lot too.
Really enjoyed this video as you have gotten me into the spinnerbait. Could you do a video on the blade colors and when to use what colors. That would really help. Thank you for all the videos you do
Spinnerbait has always been my confidence bait. I got really into them in the early to mid 90's. I like war eagles and nichols and strike kings. Booyah has a few good ones as well I love to throw quarter ounce ones when the bite gets tough it usually works. Good video.
Frank Scalish did a lesson back in October of 2020. Talking about setting up one's bass boat. In order to drive on water (he sets it up, not for calm water conditions, but rougher waves and such). Encountered in bass competition.
Matt, Jeffreys and Frank. Go through the various options. Between the three blade, four blade and five blade options (five blade relate to other boat types, however he explained it is possible to obtain smaller diameter prop units). Which can work in bass boat angling situations. Matt arrived at the analogy. That perhaps the three blade option. Was akin to cruising gears in automobiles. One does not have much power available, but okay for straight cruise driving. Compared to the five blade option. That works best to orient boats in restricted room (such as trying to orientate oneself in the trough between two waves for example).
The key engineering term that they came up with, used by a lot of the propellor shop engineers. Was hydraulic slippage. Where the blades that offered most slippage (such as the three blade options). Took the longest time to react. Upon doing something to engine power, or steering. Or whatever control intervention is done by the boat driver. Clearing in the case of these spinner bait blade options. A similar thing is happening. Whereby, the more blades that are acquired by these baits. The less slippage it enables those baits to have. The trade off being. That it also enables the angler. To manipulate the bait more. When working at shorter distances.
In other words. What we are saying (subject to the greater expertise of the local prop shop engineering assessment). These spinner baits and lures. With additional blades. Could be useful for throwing. Around various kinds of structure. The backs of creeks. The places where one is trying to work down. To the smaller scale. The angler can benefit maybe. From having increased control over the bait (although, as Frank admits, by the time you get to five blade propellor units). These may not be the fastest in the world. Compared to the four. Or the three blade.
What I would like to see though. Are some of the bass anglers. Taking some of those exceptionally large (for deep spoon fishing), metal spoons. And simply chopping some of those in half. Why? Because one thing those deep spoon fishing baits have. Is an angle of curvature to them. That one does not often find. In the usual one ounce, or half ounce bass spoons. I looked at the angle of curvature of some of them. And it's not very exaggerated. I often wondered what would happen. If one look a larger spoon. And re-sized it down to around half it's length. One would have to punch a new hold and do some modifications. To the spoon. To create a new hook attachment location. I can't understand to my mind. Why bass anglers. Are so precious about having their spoons. All shined up and immaculate. Fish don't care. They really don't.
Especially if anglers have those rods. That have that braided line on them and such. So as to make those larger types of spoons. Really work some action in the water. In the same way. As one would go with a more aggressive propellor design. In some instances. For example, where a lake is overwhelmed with bait fish. For the fish to forage on there. One has to do something a bit different. To make the fish even want to look. At a bass angler's lure.
Really good video, this gives everyone a great idea of when to fish each spinnerbait. The only thing I would add is in cold water I always use a Colorado blade, because of a slower retrieve and bigger fish.
Thank you! all these videos and advice are applicable for many other species of fish that we have here in France congratulations for the 20k subscribers 👍
spinnerbaits are my favorite way to catch bass. i have recently been experimenting with inline spinners and putting boot tail swim baits on the back. they are awesome in pads and pad stems
20k, congrats. Good info, once a angler gains confidence in them they are one of the easiest baits to modify..... as many folks know. Shopping in walleye tackle for different colors on colorados and willows is worth the effort. Those walleye guys paint up great bluegill and perch patterns.
Congrats on reaching 20K!!!🥇 Thanks for the tips on the spinnerbaits!! I always thought the opposite on the blades but glad you straightened me out!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!!
Hey Matt, I was taught blade depends on bait fish. If bluegill, Colorado blade. Shad or minners, willow leaf blade. Color based on weather, etc. Thanks man. ✌🏻🎣
That war eagle screaming eagle and their finesse spinner are some great spinner baits imo- I've done really well with them. Their "mouse" color kills around here- no idea why, doesn't look like anything I've ever seen in the water around here anywhere but- they love that color. The only thing I think it's even close to is maybe a crappie or baby carp- Idk, I just know they eat it. Good tips Matt, thanks.
Matt, great video, as always! what are your thoughts on using a trailer hook on your spinnerbait? Also, congratulations on 20K subscribers, you have the most informative channel ! Thanks for all you do!
generally a baitcaster because i have better casting accuracy with it. but if its a micro spinner bait i will occasionally drop down to a spinning rod.
My favorite spinnerbait was a Charlie Campbell's CC spinner single Colorado. The blade was cup like a teaspoon at the end. Put out maximum vibration when slow-rolling it through stumps. Do you have any idea what spinnerbait maybe similar on the market today?
I DO like keeping the Colorado blade spinnerbait up high, almost a WAKE BAIT! Probably don't use a spinnerbait as much as I should. I THINK the RARE times the line slides up the wire annoys me enough to leave it in the box. WHY don't spinnerbaits have a closed eye??? Lol. Thanks Matt!

Why. Doesn’t. Anybody talk about the thickness of the metal. And density of the metal. On these blades. Different signatures through the water. That’s a Muskie pros. Thing they really believe in. Why not. Bass. 🤔🤔🤔
A single Colorado blade slow rolled in shallow dirty water around wood or rock works great. Thanks for the spinner bait tips Matt.
