I have just started throwing a spinner bait again. Have always used white , black, and green and brown skirts. Never thought about coloring the blades. Great tip.
@@MattStefanFishing it sure does. I assumed more people did it. But just don’t talk about it or ? I will also paint just one side so you have that occasional flash as well
You are so right, I used to catch bass on spinner baits and now I cannot recall the last time I tied one on. Also, I will modify some with colors I have never thrown.
Good tips. I do throw a couple chatterbaits and a thunder cricket with black and green pumpkin skirts and a black blade but I've almost completely discounted the trusty old spinnerbait at this point other than the jig head with the underpin. Gotta get those spinnerbaits back in the rotation and try different color blades. Thanks!
One of my go to spinnerbaits has white Dbl willow blades... I have taken a couple of black n blue skirts and put them on my spinnerbaits... bluegills are primary forage
I caught 15 keepers the other day. First time throwing one. I'm hooked. Lol Summertime bite as well. Slow down, no! Lol I'm impressed and will try darker ones now. Lol thanks for the ideas Matt!
War eagle purple Shad I just bought the same one last week and have been crushing them on it, I love purple in my lures specially on my hand tied jigs i do I like adding some purple strands in there I seem to always get a good bite with the little purple in them
I have been using different nail polish colors for years. That way you can use the semi clear colors and get some muted flash. There’s like 6 million colors to choose from too lol. Tons of different glitter colors too. I live in upstate NY near Champlain and I’ve used a ton of black and purple toned spinnerbaits. June bug type colors always work great up here because we don’t have shad as the major forage species.
Great tip Matt. I couldn’t agree more. My biggest Indiana Bass came off a custom bluegill spinnerbait. I took an old Yamamoto spinnerbait and changed up the blade configuration and skirt color and it has been my best producing spinnerbait in Indiana. I think I should send you one....
Huge War Eagle and Picasso Invisi-Wire chuckin' fool right here..But,2 of my FAV spinnrbts that I really need to buy back ups of are the 1)ZMan Luke Clausen 1/2oz dble willow in Bluegill with a GP Yamamoto dble tail grub trailer,&2)The S.K. Bottom Dweller??blue and black skirt,3/8oz with black blades with blue fleck..Big Bite Getters;those 2..I look at a spinnerbait as the bait that paved the way for the A- Rig and the Bladed Jig.
I recall 25 years ago on Potomac River when the guy in the back of my boat out-fished me throwing an all-purple spinnerbait in the creek below Mattawoman.
Great tip. Been doing that for 45+ years. Best skirt colors for me black, brown, any dark color combination. Best blades are brass, copper and painted.
man i use colored blades all the time and dark skirts for years but i fish in the northwoods .no shad by me but white still does work also but mostly darker colors.
Awesome tip! You told me to color the blades a week or so ago when I said I was going to toss dark spinners at big arb. I'm prepped for tossing them next week!
Nichols is a good resource for some excellent colored blades in options that hold up similarly to their quality spoons. Reasonably priced. Thanks for sharing Matt
Absolutely agree with this. Probably as much as I agree with the one about extra fast rods. I think the younger generation of anglers were deprived in ways by not being around for the style of equipment back in the day. All reaction type baits were fished on medium rods with more of moderate fast action back then
Wow, never thought about the Spinnerbaits and colored blades (other than black). Thanks Matt great sharpie tip! I like to use a black sharpie on the thin end of a baby bass senko.
I live around Dale Hollow lake Tennessee and Kentucky lakes I have thrown red and orange spinner baits a round rock for years for smallmouth and largemouth works great I appreciate the tip on other colors 🙏
This is a seriously underrated thing. I've got a box full of Picasso, Nichols and several JDM spinnerbaits with funky colored blades. I like the ones where only one side of blade is painted the best. I use them and big inline spinnerbaits, like the Snagless Sally from Hildebrandt, for those awkward times around shallow cover when a regular spinnerbait has too flash and a vibrating jig has too much vibration. Sounds like I need expand on when/where I'm using them. Thanks for the video!
Hey Matt.....Great content.....I live in Louisiana and the Spinnerbait has always been the King.....been fishing them for almost 60 years.....I have been making my own for over 40 year's......they are killers......I enjoy all of your Videos......I only have daughters.....it would have been Great to have a Son like you ......so I consider you as my adopted son.......so keep up the Fantastic work Matt
Great video! Geneva got a 4lb smallmouth on black moon talker Sunday morning at 4am and 515am got a 4lb largemouth on a glowbladw with red Colorado and chartreuse willowleaf can't count out a spinnerbait even in clear water.
I am going to paint my blades with Sharpies. Great idea. Another idea off this, why don’t folks throw dark black or dark blue crank baits? But, your right, i rarely see folks throwing spinnerbaits any longer. We are lucky as anglers to have so many different excellent techniques to use on the water. We often forget the best baits.
Here in NH we have a guy, Rocky Ledge Tackle that makes some great finesse spinnerbaits in bluegill and perch colors with some semi custom blades. They flat out catch fish! Great video and spot on for us fellow "Northerners" in clear water without shad!
Wow another great video. Some of us in the great northeast don't have a lot of shad...especially on the smaller lakes and ponds we fish. Bluegill and perch seem to be the bait of choice so great advice...keep it coming.
I used my wife’s discarded nail polish to match bullet weights and jig heads to worms. I used permanent ink markers to give eyespots and gill slits to blades. OH NO! Here comes another round of mods as I paint blades to match baitfish!!
Very good pointers. I’m still pursuing my first fish on a spinner bait. Renewed hope for me. I’m envious of your beautiful back yard view. Bringing back memories of my years on the farm outside of Spring Green. Enjoy your weekend.
Well Matt you got me on this one, i have never thrown dark spinnerbaits but after you explained this it all makes sense, I am going to whip a few up and give them a try. Thanks for all the great content.
Always thought it was strange to see chatter baits in every color combination u could think of, but with spinner baits, like 4 choices.... great tip, gonna put this one to use for sure

Great tip. Love my sharpies. Spinner baits have the greatest potential for mods. Nichols makes some darker factory skirts and blades. Walleye fisherman love custom painted everything..... including Colorado and Willow blades for their crawler harness rigs. A brief look at any walleye blade selection will reveal numerous good color options for bass fishing...... shhh.... don't tell the walleye guys this. Lol. Not sure about WI, MN region but here in Michigan dirty water lake Erie creates a huge custom color market for walleye gear. Thanks for the vid keep up the great work.
You are spot on. It’s amazing how many blade color combinations there are for walleye spinners...I’m just not sure why that hasn’t carried over to bass fishing yet.
@@MattStefanFishing I can speak to this from a Michigan perspective..... Walleye and Bass fisherman have fairly defined divide between them, sure some Anglers fish both species. The hard-core walleye and hard core bass Anglers are divided here in Michigan. I spent the last 6 seasons focused just on walleye from Alpena MI to Cleveland OH and it makes me shake my head with the disparity between the two groups. Especially when the reality is both species are predators and share numerous common denominators. Oh well, can't change everyone's mind. I'm done chasing walleye going back to my roots of bass fishing for the 2nd half of my life starting this season. Appreciate your content and straight forward approach. Keep up the great work.
I’ve been using the blade dip from do it for years.Works on hooks, chatter blades split rings etc…Makes a difference at times.

That stuff is great, and holds up well. Make sure you clean the surface good before dipping. Works on chromed lippless and cranks as well.

Black & Gold is my #1 Spinnerbait in tannic water. Good color for a bladed jig as well.

Thanks for the great tips. I have used blades colored red with a sharpe, on a black spinner bait at night, but never considered purple, or blue.

Bass perceive blues as shades of gray. Purple is a deep, grayish red if it’s shallow and dark gray if deep.
Yeah being in S. Florida I hate all the shad this and that. I need dark, or gold shiner colors.
