Speaking of colors Matt I have a Musky bait it is wrapped not painted If you ever seen the movie California Kid if you remember the car in that movie was black with red and yellow flames this lure is black with yellow and red flames I bought just to have it from a guy who was selling baits on the side of the road I thought it was really different I don't use it. Their was no box neither one of us knew who made it but it is definitely different thanks for sharing this tip
I won't pretend to be an expert on any subject, but it seems clear to me that the pretty colors and patterns on lures are there mostly to attract fishermen. Fish are attracted by sound, smell, and motion more than anything. I paint lures with an airbrush for fun and can say with authority that flashy colors and pretty patterns on baits is to fishermen like sparkles from diamonds and jewels to women. I don't think the fish really care that much.
Matt great topic. I’m starting a deep dive on this JERKBAITS on my channel. Now. Even within those categories the options are mind numbing, especially with Megabass. Thanks for the great content
Hey Matt. Thanks for the tips! My Wife got me some Stunnas and 110 +1 Jrs for Christmas. I think I understand when to use the GP Pro Blue, the Sexy Shad, and the French Pearl OB. But I'm a little lost when it come to the Elegy Bone color? She did a great job I think. But these are all new to me. Any tips? God Bless!
I totally dig that you fish a lot of very clear water and fish up north. I am in New England and its hard to find a lot of good info for our conditions and lake types.
If i know the fish are eating really small forage I will use a feathered treble hook since it mimics tiny baitfish. But overall im not a huge fan of feathered trebles on my jerkbaits because it creates drag in the water and prevents the jerkbait from darting as far side to side IMO
Love the channel Matt. You are doing a great job breaking down the decision making process of what to throw when but most importantly it’s the why that is so incredibly helpful. I ended up putting feather trebles on my jerks but now I will keep a handful of baits with and some without. What’s your take on size of jerkbait or any other situations where adding feather treble might make sense? I recall you were proponent of it on topwater. Keep up the good work!
@@wesvyverberg9517 Hey Wes, I'm not Matt, but one other situation that feathers works well for me besides matching small hatch is walleye fishing. I've found when it's really cold, for some reason the walleye key in better on my JB with a feather treble. I started by using a mini gulp worm on one treble and that worked, then I got to thinking I might simplify it with a feather treble...it worked. I also sprits a little scent on that feather...maybe just for my confidence, but in my head it seems to work better. 😊
I fish a largemouth lake and my best lure is a fluke but the bigger bass don’t react to it as good as they used to. I’m wanting to try a hard jerkbait because I think the realism might get bigger bass. The best colors of fluke are pearl white, glimmer blue and silver rainbow in that order. Can you recommend a couple of hard jerkbait colors to replace the flukes?
Most people recommend chrome for bright days, but I agree with you that you need the extra flash on cloudy days. Do you apply that logic to topwaters as well?
I really wanted to get into jerkbait fishing this year but- we had record rainfall, the water would never clear enough to throw them. At least not at the places I was fishing. I recently found a clear water reservoir about 50 miles away I can fish- should be able to throw them there. I have a box full of jerk baits and even bought a dedicated rod- and then all the sudden it started raining and literally never stopped for more than 2 days for over 6 months. It really changed things- I fish a river that's basically remade every time it floods- holes are filled with sand and new ones are blown out and trees get washed in- sand bars that were hundreds of feet long are just gone. It's nuts but, you just have to relearn it and keep going. It will stay that way until the next wet season and then you'll have to learn it all over again.
@@MattStefanFishing indeed- it was nuts. Hey I asked you recently about using those little weighted plugs you buy for practice casting- and you said you just used a jig and trailer. I meant off the water- do you still use a jig and trailer when pitching to targets in your yard?
I raise 2 boys on my own. 10 and 7 year old. Sooo hard to do this. Work nights 40-50 hours a week and then fish what tourneys I can. Its a struggle. I try my best tho. Definitely at a disadvantage not getting to ever practice.
You can smash on a JB in the summer, when it gets hot and you get suspending fish, pick one that stays just barely above the grass cover in your lake. Vegetation is the big limiting factor when fishing jb in the summer. I live on a BBH fishery, so JB in the summer works great, especially at humps and Ridgeline where the BBH congregate to find cooler water, and the bass follow. Good fishin to ya!
Thanks.
You bet!
I've been watching many videos on Bass vision. I'm not sure how much color matters? Good luck this year Matt.
Depends on the situation

Thanks Matt for your knowledge from Ohio.

What jerkbait brands have a dark red color that you like? I have been using them for speckled trout but I cant find the right dark red im looking for.
Megabass

there are so many different baits
@@MattStefanFishing it’s crazy. The technique itself has so many variables to begin with and the number of baits makes it 🤯

elegy bone can be used in anything other than muddy water. super versatile color and one of my favorites

The Rapala Slash Rap. Works great on walleyes in less deeper water it has feathers!!!!!

for the most part I do unless I'm really trying to match a hatch.

I like throwing jerkbaits too. I also throw smaller floating jerkbaits post spawn. Gold or any shad-like color.

nothing worse than fishing a bait you dont care for lol
Go basic and that don't mean translucent. White, tiger, black top, blue top, and green top. There are notable mentions like ayu and brown top....
thanks for sharing!
Would love some visual examples maybe another video?
Will do at some point
