Small bell sinker pushed into the head of the tube line tie first. Once the line tie makes contact with the tip of the tube push it slightly to identify where and what direction the line tie is facing. Use a wide gap offset hook and poke straight down the tip of the tube, turn your hook out and through the line tie. Push out the side off the head, rotate and back through the base of the tube and rig weedless. Cheap, easy and weedless.
The foam ear plug in the tube is a great tip. I've been doing it for years. One thing I add is scent to the plug. Throughout the day you can spray it as much as you need too. Great channel. Thanks for the tips.
You can float a tube that way and create sort of a weedless walking top water bait too. Perfect for places you can’t really put a treble hook into… and a completely different look from hollow plastic baits like frogs.
I like to add scent inside my ear, the night before I fish….saturate the ear plug….commence dreaming of Italian food. All that garlic scent and all! Tight lines! 🐟
Different options for different techniques, but as far as tube heads, it’s hard to beat the original Bobby Garland gitzit heads. They have a nice gliding action and spiral down nicely. One thing I really like to do with a tube as well is slide it over a jigging spoon in the winter. Those cloudy days or off color water when a mirror finish isn’t really good, it’s can be a game changer. A few casting type spoons like the acme sidewinder or little Cleo can be absolutely deadly. On😊of the biggest smallmouth I have ever caught 8-3 came on a smoke tube over a 1/4 Oz sidewinder.
If you're a believer, you can also squirt some liquid attractant in with the foam ear protection on the c-rig. I still have some of the weird Shaw Grigsby tube hooks with the clip on them so you attach stuff inside the tube. Great video!
I like the idea of using a tube as a trailer for a buzz bait, and using the foam earplugs as a float when Carolina Rigging.?Thanks again Matt. This is one of my favorite fishing channels on UA-cam. I’m hoping the word gets out. You should definitely blow up w/subscribers. 👍🏼🎣
Great video as always Matt. Backer rod is a cheap way to float the tubes. It comes in different diameters and it is water resistant so the buoyancy is consistent. You can get it at any hardware store. Thanks for making us all better.
Thanks Matt. One of the best how to channels on UA-cam. Lake Trout ice fishing. Mostly with tube jig inserted , also can rig ballhead or similar jig head super glued on outside of tube. 90 degree line tie for ice fishing. Buy bulk cigarette filters, soak in scent, then insert in tube. Never tried Alka Seltzer but read that it works.
Awesome tips on the tube! Brings me back to the days as a young kid throwing them. I'm gonna have to break them back out again. Thanks for sharing with us!
I watched Bil Dance swim a tube jig about three maybe four feet off bottom for largemouth once at a private lake- and he was killing it. He said the tube was originally meant to be swam, not fished on bottom- I don't know about that but I know he was catching some big ones on it swimming it around that day. He had a regular tube head on but with a 90-degree hook tie- not a 60. I think I would still prefer the 60-degree line tie myself- I have swim jigs that have 60-degree line ties on them and it makes them less stable- so they tend to roll and hunt a little when I get aggressive with it- I like that. But yeah, he was fishing it on a spinning rod and he would shake it like you do a swim jig as he swam it to give it more action- worked great.
Caught the biggest largemouth I will ever catch in my life at a private pond when I was 14 on a green pumpkin tube with a regular old jig head stuffed in there throwing on a bed. I recently started throwing them on a Tokyo rig, showed real promise!
Saw some of those ear plugs in Home Depot last week. I don't need them as such, but they caught my eye and I paused and looked at them for a bit. Guess I'm going to go buy them now! Thanks for the ideas.
I have used an EWG hook 2/O or 3/O, Texas rigged however skin hooking the side of tube as opposed to going through both walls of plastic. Helps when fishing double dipped or thicker tubes. Just a possible alternative.
Yep, everything he said. One of my favorite post spawn to peak summer pattern michigan Largemouth baits on lakes with sparse weed growth. Especially where the Thermocline touches the bottom radius of a deep drop off. Thanks for the vid.
Denny Brauer once said that instead of throwing your tube away when it gets a little rough up on the side where the hook eye is, just turned it around and fish it from the other side . Saves money
Great video, started throwing a tube this year, caught some big ones on them, mostly texas rigged around grass and caught several big fish with a tube on a tokyo rig, going to try one on a free rig
I got away from using he tube but want to get back into using it. Talking about different species I caught a catfish on it once. Thanks for the tips!!!👊🏻👍🏻 Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
I like to fish them weightless nose hooked on a drop shot hook. They will float or just barely sink and you can walk the dog with them. Works really well when bluegill are popping the surface of the water
Rig weightless, put small split shot bout 5 feet or more depending on rod length, use small tubes cast out far you can let current take the rig to bottom, keeping taught line as it falls.
Dude I’ve gotten the z hog from zoom it’s a fish catching bait I’m using the 3.5 watermelon candy on a zero gravity finesse jig love the combo I was just watching Woo fishing tubes on a old video he had made I haven’t fished a tube since I was a kid long time ago
The floating technique here is cool since I fish my tubes in the mid columns. I do it with trebles, but I have it rigged so that they become weedless. The problem with trebles on tubes is the fish get injured every time. You land them 100% of the time, and you have to get them dislodged from the throat. This may be a better method. The treble method does let you hide the sinker and keep the baits straight/streamline. A lot of our techniques derived from trout fishing. The greatest fishermen can transition skills from specie to specie.
I had a muskie on this fall throwing a 3 inch, green pumpkin tube. Unfortunately, he snapped me once he realized that he was hooked. 90% of the time, I like to use a Texas rig.
Great video, Matt, with lots of super information. You have really engaged my interest on using the tube. One question, when Texas rigging it, do you more frequently peg the weight or does it just depend on the conditions? Also, I finally tuned into "Fish the Moment Live" and had a chance to hear Randy, You and Jonnie talk some interesting subjects. I thought you brought a ton of weight to the conversation. Enjoyed!
Personally, I'm not big on the "tube", but I have an uncle who's a hammer on our local lake and it is one of his go to flipping bait. I will soon be giving the tube its time in the water.

Once somewhat torn up don't tops them away. You can insert a stick bait such a senkos. Tube over the stick bait creating a tube worm.

I imagine some backer rod or some leftover senko in the hollow body paired with your core tackle hover rig would be quite effective!

Never thought about caralina float. Gotta try that thanks

Packing peanuts work great to float your tube jigs.

How about a little Alka-Seltzer Matt? Ever do that?
I've done the alka-seltzer chunk in my tube for at least 20 years. Don't think its widely used, but sure works.
