I think one of the reasons why LA is so nice for people like us is that it's like Mecca for individualism. Everyone feels free to be as weird as they want. No one's surprised by it. There _is no_ expected behavior or appearance. So if you're naturally awkward, or you have your own style, you'll just kinda blend in. I had the same experience there. 🙂

I live in Albuquerque which is a very laid back city with a lot of unusual people.
I was excited to go see all the interesting people in New York City. I found out that people were much more outwardly conforming there than in Albuquerque.

It's sweet how you're so tactile with your friend. 😊

It was so refreshing to hear your impression of LA and watch you enjoy your visit! I live close by and you really made me aware of how much I take for granted and how differently I could see the culture here if I chose to, so thank you for the perspective. Also, if you ever visit the Northwest of the US, stop by Powell's City of Books in Portland ... It's literally an entire city block and you can get lost in there for days!

I would spend so long in that book store, what an awesome store!! I found Anne rices blood & gold to be a much better read than interview with the vampire.

If you were to have visited the Seattle/Tacoma area in Washington state, you would find public spaces just as hostile as in the UK haha! It's called the Seattle freeze! I've lived in both Western Washington and the UK and now live in the Midwestern US. The states can be so vastly different from one location to the next.

Sadly, this is true. Seattle is kind of London West, both in terms of rain and attitude. I think it's because we have SO many different ethnicities here in the Pacific Northwest and there are a lot of insular enclaves, kind of like the UK, so there's a lack of neighborhood friendliness.

@@Felice_Enellen very much so. After having lived in Western/Central Washington state for 35 years, and now living in Western Kansas, I totally do not miss that Pacific Northwest attitude one bit. Don't get me wrong I still have a number of good friends up there but the general passive aggressive hostility among the general public is palpable there. Here, in the Midwest it's a lot different. Of course I don't discuss my atheism or Leftist political worldview unless I really know someone but that's an easy enough adjustment to make.

@@allanwhite1533 That's the problem with moving from blue to red. You trade off problems. For a woman, red states are just a no-go these days, ever since red overturned RvW and most of the red states automatically outlawed abortion, frequently even in the case of SA or even _child_ SA in the strictest states, and then some also often started going after regular contraception. I'd rather have aloof neighbors than religious zealots who just want women to be baby factories popping out more believers. Not to mention how they treat LGBTQ people. **shudder**

@@Felice_Enellen yep, the only reason why I moved here is to purchase and affordable home and because I don't drive due to dyspraxia and thus get around primarily by walking and recumbent cycling. In the general context of the US society where vehicles are so overpowered and oversized and most municipalities lack the network of fully protected cycling/pedestrian infrastructure as many European cities like Amsterdam or Copenhagen, I find it best to live in small, sparsely populated locales where there's minimal slow moving traffic and many key amenities close together. In Washington, it was growing increasingly difficult to find communities like that, just due to overall increased population growth. Here on the plains, human population is actually declining which bodes well with my need for more time/space to safely get around. But it is quite unsettling to think about how the practical ramifications of the beliefs that many people in this region tend to have. I can only take solace in having found a circle of friends who are at least somewhat progressively leaning and to vote my conscience and support progressive left leaning political causes. Plus since I've been here, I have managed to open a few minds on certain issues. But I certainly wouldn't live here if I were married and had a family that's for sure.

@@Felice_Enellen New Mexico is pretty friendly despite being a mixture of cultures. Bigger cities tend to be less friendly. Of course LA is a big city and culturally diverse

LA is not very calming depending on the area. Venice is nice, but a lot of homeless and daily crime.

Yeah I was going to comment about the tape. Europe has PAL, US NTSC so unfortunately the tape will play at the wrong speed on a PAL vcr. The difference between 50 and 60 hz.
