- The device the heifer is in is used to give medications and provide close care. Medications did not stop the growth so further intervention was needed. She was given various medications and is doing much better.
Why was this allowed to get that large?
Probably a few days old at most. Not sure if this is a vet or the owner draining it. If it’s a vet there’s a possibility that they had to wait for them. If it’s the owner they probably just caught it. When you have lots of cows it’s hard to notice such things. I don’t think they neglected the cow in anyway.
these cysts or (whatever they’re technically called ) can fill up apparently very fast so it might be that it wasn’t neglect. it looks horrendous.

First you wait if the body absorbs it and gets rid of the inflammation when the cow is given medication. When it doesn’t it grows to maturity and drain it. This is rather large but it sometimes happens. Has nothing to do with not well seeing all your cows because it is too big.
It happens very quickly.

Bless that poor cow, I bet it was such a relief to have it sorted. That amount of "fighting the bad" must've made her feel totally drained (forgive the pun) I trust she's recovered properly and is no longer in discomfort

have to flush it out with huge syringe with peroxide water mixture afterwards, keep some wound dust, bloodstop also, just in CASE, horrible smell when you have to treat them, wooden bunks, metals the way to go. until they get there heads stuck, that's why folks use wood still, can cut a stuck cow out of a feeder. 90% of absessces, came from rubbing on the wooden feeders out west.

Yep from safety of my kitchen 🤣. No barn yard smells in my 🏡 house. In nurse school we studied parasites. Cafeteria served spaghetti for lunch. I did not eat anything that day. After awhile medical professionals get used to the smell and compassion takes over
