Personally I come back to this video and Barry's blues comping video very often. There's just such a wealth of knowledge to unpack. He explains EVERYTHING. Seriously there are other videos on UA-cam that are just clearly above my level and its frustrating but one day if I keep watching I know the penny will drop when it's time. I dont get why people take their frustration with their inability to grasp concepts to silly UA-cam comments. Seriously its UA-cam, there are no shortage of lessons. Someone WILL speak your language at YOUR level. So find that person and move on. Be appreciative of the platform because we aint paying for this.
your flow combined with the surprisingly good sounding musical examples is enchanting and the very proof that you are brilliantly intelligent in one of the most harmonious ways. a pleasure to follow your thoughts. thank you.
Good tutorial. It is always helpful for teachers to have fret markers on their guitars for instruction. It really helps for new students to get a grasp of where the instructor is on the guitar.
I found Barry only about 8 months ago and i am constantly amazed with the generosity and quality of each and every one of these postings - trying to find / make the time for either a skype or streaming sub - there's just so much info - to echo a previous comment - a gift for sure
The lessons he offers online are truly fantastic. I wouldn't bother writing this except they are really well taught meat and potatoes information. Well worth the money.
Thank you Barry for not taking this out from UA-cam. I watched this years ago and kinda forget about it. I have practiced my voicings and scales in the intervening years (and Im still trying to get them under my fingers) and stumbled on this video again today, watched it from start to finish and realized the immense wealth of information I am getting from it now. One example is that for a long time, I struggled in deciding whether to play altered or unaltered on a particular dominant chord. It is clear to me now. So I am greatly thankful. I will subscribe to your video lessons very soon, that is for sure. Be safe.
Thanks Edgardo de Dios! Right now you can get your first month at 50% off which also includes a 7 day free trial. Let me know if you need any more information. Glad you liked the video!
You are cracking me up because you teach like i do. You have so much info to give out that you keep jumping around to different subjects. Then getting back to the matter at hand. Your excited to teach that is a good thing.
I have been a fan of your playing for quite a while. I live in the middle of nowhere and it is great to have access to good information about how to improve my playing. Thanks so much for this webinar. I hope you will do more of the same.
you kill me, all this stuff!!! many information here, early as soon as possible, understand everything, it's logic and open with many option and exeption 'cause of harmonic context and expression of yourself....just waooo...learn it and forget it...very good fretbord mastery....gratefull
Big Barr, The relationship between the Harmonic / Melodic minor scales and the "Secret" Jazz chord, so helpful, was digging down on "Sugar" so much fun, thank you man, BGJ

Barry, thanks for this video. I'm looking at the scale sheet you provided from dropbox. These scale positions you recommend, Is this similar to the CAGED system? Also, you mention practicing these scales using scale exercises. Do you teach how to learn these scales and provide the exercises, as you mention practicing these scale form using intervals. Do you show how to practice them around the cycle of 4ths as to reinforce them into memory? Do you show a student this in the material you have on your website? I've heard of playing scales around the cycle of 4th and practicing doing intervals and such but have not dove into that yet. I cannot find a teacher online that provides a structured system to learning scales using intervals and playing around the cycle of 4ths or whatever else might drive them into memory. Like at 1:02:12, do you provide a structured approach on how to do such exercises, or do you expect the student to have already passed that level?
Hi Glenn, everybody is different so I approach each student as an individual situation. Yes I have a structured method to everything you are asking about, but again one thing I’m proud of is my ability to tailor it to the individual student. Thanks!
1:14:21 LOL! That is exactly how Jack Petersen picked! At UNT (1978 - 1982) he never advocated that method, but because he could play so fast, we thought he had figured out something better. We all tried to do it. Maybe one or two guys could do it. I never could. Technique aside, playing alongside Jack on stage in the top guitar ensemble, you really got a sense for his incredible feel. He was a very emotional player. He would breath deep and his face would get red when he was digging deep into the strings. Regarding instruction, I had to go to one of the best jazz schools in the nation to learn what Barry Greene is teaching. Take advantage of this opportunity!
Thanks alot for this, Barry! I'll tell everyone about this video! This is just pure gold! Im a bass player, but I learned alot from this anyway! Awesome!
Hi Barry, there is so much in this lesson that I hardly know how to master it. One question: I am very interested in the pattern you play when it comes to explaining to scales to improvise on this tune (approx. at position 45:00 ongoing). Is there any systematic pattern behind these line examples as they seem to be constructed in a similar way throughout the different harmonies? And if so, do you have any material to study on this?
Hi from New Zealand Barry, you certainly are an inspirational guitarist. Regarding your right hand pick position, would you mind covering in detail the angle that the down and up stroke looks like, Troy Grady-esk, thanks so much in advance. Robert Kingi.
Hi Barry, I remember when you did this video. I'm teaching Jazz guitar now, mostly beginners. I was wondering about how you are picking, is it kind of the Benson style with the pick at an angle? Thank you
I love your teaching! Very helpful! One problem I have is that you're calling natural minor melodic minor. Natural minor is the aolian mode with no alterations. Melodic minor has a raised 6th and 7th ascending, and flat 6 and 7 descending. Otherwise, thanks very much for your work here!
+Ed Halbach that's in the classical world. Jazz musicians use melodic minor both ascending and descending, that's where all of those hip modes come from. It's sometimes referred to as Jazz minor but few of us use that terminology. Raised 6th and 7th both ascending and descending is how jazz musicians use melodic minor.
Hello again Barry, I would love to watch live and maybe send in some questions next time. Do you send out email invitations? How can I know about your next webinar? I bought your Line Connections Lesson 6 or so months ago, excellent quality and very insightful. Thanks in advance, M-A
Excellent lesson. I laughed because although I haven't attended Berklee, I have the Modern Method books. I also approach scales with a 3 note per string pattern as well as the ones you've shown. I'm talking about starting at tonic and using 3 intervals per string. Do you think that there is a downside to this approach? Also, it seems like you use more alternate picking than economy? What are you thoughts on that as well? Thanks.
Picking is a personal choice. Alternate has always worked well for me. Three notes per string don't always work that well with bebop language but again, if you're getting results, stay with it! Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. Seeing as the approach notes require a possible whole tone below and above, I could see how the 2nd finger would be the optimal choice in that situation when the next diatonic note would be a semi-tone in a bebop context(considering a whole tone below and a chomatic approach note to the target). I love the sound and will surely consider choosing it in improvisations as I incorporate more of that into my own playing.
Yes Barry please do these maybe once a quarter or so. Whatever you are comfortable with. I am a yearly subscriber to your lesson plan but somehow you touch on things in a different way...not that your lessons aren't chock full of stuff because they are!
This is great, thanks, I'm trying to learn jazz but it's hard to know where to start? I've been playing over 40 years, so I know a lot, after watching your videos I feel like I know very little. Where to start?
Listen to recordings by Grant Green, Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. Then learn the solos off the recordings. The theory stuff can come way later. Just immerse yourself in the music.
I am excited to try to play a tune in one position, i always do the opposite. I try to play a tune in as many ways as possible and what sounds best to me, i combine. Thx for the suggestion ^^

Barry, have you ever experienced a kind of thorny pain on the fingertips of your left hand? It is kind of an itchy, focused pain when you press a string. This has happened to me recently, probably from practicing more than I should, or from using too much pressure on pressing with the fingers. I would be glad if you give me a feedback. Thanks! Wonderful tips, by the way!!!
Filip Dinev sounds like you are pressing to hard try altering your grip slightly .I had a bad cut on my index and even years after pressing on that part of my finger caused the kind of pain you mention
reffoelcnu alouncelal it needed up being overuse of the mac trackpad. One of the things I have worked on, is playing very relaxed. No more problems since buying a mouse for the laptop. Thanks.
Hard for me to put a finger on it but I think you are approaching the topic in a lighter fashion...simpler examples somehow. I will watch this video some more and also ones on your lesson site and see if I can figure out what it is I'm trying to say.
Great stuff, Barry. Thank you. As for the link you embed early on, it doesn't take me to the dropbox files. It either brings up the video itself in another window or tells me "your search.....does not match any documents."
If you can read music my favorite books on Bebop are "How to Play Bebop 1, 2, and 3" by David Baker. Really goes into detail about melodic patterns in common usage with many examples from transcriptions.
Craigl Lacour64 if you’re referring to major scales, check out the 3-on-string scale system. Start on first finger on root and play 3 notes per string.
If you want to really learn some solid jazz guitar drop a few bucks here. Stop jumping around and check his sight out and your serch is over and your education begins. But unlike lesson you go to to for an hour at 40 45.00 these lessons you have so you can go over and over.
I think Jimmy Bruno teaches same fingerings, except he starts from the different notes(from index finger) of the scale, not from the root. Years of searching bring people to similar conclusions, I guess. :) Are you familiar with his teaching?
Alexander Lazarev I am very good friends with Jimmy. I think a lot of us reach similar conclusions although the path may have been different:) I hope you enjoyed the webinar. Barry
Wonderful lesson for sure ! And at a great price ! But, is it me ? The sound, especially Barry's voice, is kind of garbled a bit; hard to understand. Is it just me ?
That was a live web broadcast from several years ago. I have since upgraded everything audio and video. My Facebook page hosts one or two of these a month. Thanks!
the lesson just needs to be a little slower and i need a good jazz guitar haha anyway its good if you like jazz i enjoyed it just went for a long time i guess i will watch them in 3 parts
+howard coleman my lessons are much more concise and have considerable PDF documentation. You can also slow the lessons down by up to 50%. www.barrygreene.com/information Thanks!
Man ! take a breathe and fill your lungs with good fresch air ! Your frenetic speech don't invite us to follow you ."Cops" are not behind your door .Keep cool !
Sorry but this guy leads you in a very boring drunken bridge with 3 minutes of "bla-bla" to introduce a C scale .In France we call that verbiage a"verbal diarrhea".He should observe less speech and more music .with a concise approach .
Gotta be careful saying "I am good" in this world. People don't like it even after you have devoted your whole life to something. I guess thats because the question is good relative to who? Compared to you I've got alot of work ahead of me LOL.....

That was a live web broadcast from several years ago. I have since upgraded everything audio and video. My Facebook page hosts one or two of these a month. Thanks!
Cackling at how the whoever made the thumbnail card for this video spelled it "Fretbord"
Oh boy, thanks for spotting that. I will fix it in the morning, it’s totally on me.
the lesson just needs to be a little slower and i need a good jazz guitar haha anyway its good if you like jazz i enjoyed it just went for a long time i guess i will watch them in 3 parts
+howard coleman my lessons are much more concise and have considerable PDF documentation. You can also slow the lessons down by up to 50%. www.barrygreene.com/information
Thanks!
thanks arry, oopss i meant Barry
You're welcome:)
FOR THE THUMBS DOWN YOU MIGHT JUST NEED AN EAR TRANSPLANT !!!
Canon You play Please a little slower Thanks
I do on the actual lesson, this is just a preview. barrygreenevideolessons.vhx.tv/products/fretboard-mastery-threading-positions
Man ! take a breathe and fill your lungs with good fresch air ! Your frenetic speech don't
invite us to follow you ."Cops" are not behind your door .Keep cool !
Just cause you can't understand doesn't mean hes not relaxed
Sorry but this guy leads you in a very boring
drunken bridge with 3 minutes of "bla-bla" to
introduce a C scale .In France we call that
verbiage a"verbal diarrhea".He should
observe less speech and more music .with
a concise approach .
+Jesse Sheehan Thanks Jesse, you can't please everyone:) I hope you're good.
Gotta be careful saying "I am good" in this world. People don't like it even after you have devoted your whole life to something. I guess thats because the question is good relative to who? Compared to you I've got alot of work ahead of me LOL.....
você é o bichão mesmo, hein doido!
aqui é BR hue e vc é um bosta!
