• How to Scream, Add Dis...
As the vocalist for Critical Mess and for many years before, Britta Görtz has established herself as a huge force in both real-world performance and education in the areas of screaming and singing with distortion.
So much information and so many terms are tossed around when it comes to aggressive singing and it all can be more confusing than useful.
What sets Britta's expertise apart is that it is based on ANATOMY, FEEL & EXPERIENCE!
She's not sitting on the sidelines just talking about this stuff. She actually does it! She knows what's going on from a sensation-based perspective and she puts straight-forward language to what's actually happening in your body when you're performing aggressive/extreme techniques!
I feel so left out of the loop. I recently discovered you and have been watching 1-2 yr old videos. you're easily my favorite vocal coach/instructor/educator. please keep the content coming
Thanks for watching the videos! I'll keep 'em coming!
Make sure you check out free your voice which is free! Chris has amazing classes and tutorials!
Honestly found a lot of my technique in learning how to scream over the past year and a half from you. One of my favorite vocal coaches ive found on the platform.
Thank you! Hopefully you enjoyed getting this additional perspective. I know it was really affirming and exciting for me to get to interview someone who's been "in it" for song long!
Same. My compression has been more powerful and I feel relaxed while doing it. It's crazy.
Britta is amazing! Huge fan! Excited for her course! Thanks for having her on your channel Chris.
Incredible voice
You're so very welcome Warren! It was my pleasure! She's an incredible teacher and vocalist.
@@chrisliepe yes! Really impressed!!
@@thesongacademy5017 definitely!
I always struggled to describe, when I get asked "how you do that?" while growling along to Amon Amarth. Britta has a talent to find the right words - much appreciated educational videos!
She has amazing lows for a female. And no that's not sexist. Anatomically speaking, it's hard for women to get those lower tones. Especially for someone with her natural speaking pitch being as high as it is.
What? Women mostly have a higher voice than men do? That's sexism! 🤣
@@Gehirnlutscher okay?
@@Gehirnlutscher no it isn't stfu
@@autismogamer its obviously a joke lmao
My mind is blown with the technique
Chris’ new setup is clean 🧼
It was very helpful to hear her give that fry scream example. Knowing that she feels the "Old Grandpa" sound more then the "Frog" sound, was super relatable to me. It's okay to think & feel whatever method works best for you.
Such a beautiful moment guys
A few years ago I got the chance to join one of Britta´s Courses! Recommendable, she knows what she do and give us a deep insight, what happens when you fry or growl! Greetings to her, hope to see her again!
Seeing Britta on this channel really made my day. She's just one of the nicest people I had the pleasure of meeting. Good luck with the course!
Am getting my entire vocal nerd life with this. Thanks Britta and Chris for sharing. Your fun and joyful approach to learning is just so Life affirming! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾📣📣📣💙
I love seeing comments like this!
"Fry Screaming" is activated in Mode 2 (head voice) In the true vocal folds. It is when the true folds are in proximity but not in oscillatory pattern. "Vocal fry" is what happens in Mode 1 (chest voice). They are related only in the sense that the folds are in a non-oscillatory - non-periodic mode. This creates "noise" which some people refer to as "distortion". "Disortion" is a perception, not a vocal function. "Hybrid screaming" is when there is some oscillation in the anterior portion of the true vocal folds when the posterior portion of the vocal folds are in fry screaming mode. "False Cord" screaming involves structures above the true folds (supraglottal). This is NOT fry at 13:14- In 2004, I created the terms fry screaming and false cord screaming.
I actually attended one of Britta's courses here in Germany. She is super nice and really knows what she is talking about. Her knowledge combined with the ability to hear exactly what is happening in each of her students and giving a perfectly matching feedback is really unique. Maybe she might become the German Melissa Cross for heavy vocal teaching someday. :-) Also, I was super glad when she told me my frys and false chords sounded healthy. Now I add some more variety to my voice with Chris' help.
Anyway, it was super nice to see a collab of two of my favorite vocal coaches. @chris and @britta keep up you good work!
Heck yeah! Just what I've been trying to learn, & this is a great vid :) thank you!
Really great interview. Thanks for coming on the channel Britta!
Awesome video really liked this interview!
Great video! Looks like a great course on screaming too!
Thanks so much for this interview Chris!! I've only recently discovered Britta and her bands, and I'm already a huge fan! Looking forward to her course!
Oh wow she’s amazing 😻
And I really like her approach and even terminology, I absolutely agree people tend to use fry screaming as an umbrella term for multiple techniques
Aw man, I was able to make a respectable fry scream for the very first time ever off that "old grandpa“ sound! Thanks, definitely on the waitlist.
So excited to see Britta Görtz on your channel - her workshop is what finally unlocked my unclean vocals, while your videos have refined it! Dream vocal coach team right here!!
This is brilliant 🤩
Great guest, great tips, and yes, I signed up 👍 I loved the the Make Vox Total Destroy course it was amazing and very inspiring 🙏 you and Spencer killed it. Makes me stoked to see this one
Oh my god, what an amazing colab, that was excellent! I feel so grateful for this video, very clear ideas on how to get there, very instructive, thanks a lot both of you!
You're so welcome!
Dude, been watching your chanel for quite a long time, and i like that you are inviting some realy amazing vicalists, that's insainly cool, btw just wanted to say thank you for your job
Intelligent conversation. Thnx.
I've been doing extreme vocals for 5 years and this video was very helpful tbh
Super interesting. Amazing how much carry over singing has to screaming. Might give this a go.
Thank you for this for you both 🤘😊
Love Britta and Critical Mess 🖤
You are the boss, Chris! Cheers from Brazil.
Amazing!
uh just what i needed today
This was um helpful!
Great video, the talk about sensation of fry is exactly a thing I couldn't understand when I started screaming. I could always do what I call a 'cat purr' sound to annoy teachers at school but I could never understand how to connect it with anything else, then one day I somehow did it.
I have a question though... I think I am fine singing and screaming but I really struggle with the transitions. Recently I've been into singers such as Keith Buckley, Sam Carter or Greg Puciato who are really good at going smoothly from one to another and I simply love how you can hear in their screams their voice 'cracking in' at times or how they can 'break down' from a insane scream into a spoken word.
Right now I feel like as if I had a switch in my voice, I have to close my mouth in order to 'reconfigurate' to scream. I really want to learn that because it gives off this insane vibe and extra layer of intensity. I've been trying to figure it out on my own but I feel like I always tire my voice really fast doing that (not going hoarse though). Yet both of those singers I mentioned been doing that style for over 20 years and they sound live as good as on the recordings even at the end of the set.
Keep doing this videos man :)
I will! thanks for watching! Got some more coming from Britta too!
Awesome!
Dude... I thought she was in her late 20s at max xD No way she's 44 years old o.O
what ._.
Hey would you think about doing a video on Eric Burdon. He's one of my favorite singers and I think he's quite underrated. But it would be a good lesson because he sings a lot different then everyone else. So I'd be really interested to hear what you have to say about him. Love your stuff sir, keep up the good work!
Cool! She was my teacher!!! 😎🤘
Nice
@@chrisliepe She is a super teacher! 💪
OMG I fucking love her
lost my scream because I hurt myself while screaming ( I was trying to get the belted yell, darius therani/ justin bonitez highs squaks, 80 horror woman shriek) and had to figure it out again a these videos and a few others helped me get back on track of course with a lot a training
Would love to see you do a video on Landon Tewers of The Plot In You
Would love to see u break down Jesse Lacey’s voice from Brand New. He’s got tremendous screams!
Hey Chris, one of my favorite singers is Rody Walker from Protest the Hero, do you think you could analyze his voice and his style? C'est La Vie and Drumhead Trial are songs that I feel showcase his ability fairly well
Such an awesome voice and range!
Plato’s Tripartite 😍
Hey Chris, thanks a lot for the amazing content! I was just wondering if you could take a look and analyze Phil Bozemans singing, especially those unreal low almost guttural growls that he's famous for.
Thanks for the amazing content and for showing that it's normal to sound and look stupid while you're learning 😁
Great suggestion, and haha... so glad you enjoy the approach!
You could have just said "Britta has a course coming out" and the first music video and that would have been enough for me to sign up.
an episode about 30 second to mars - "beautiful lie" wuold be awesome
I luv her❤❤❤❤❤🤘
Whitechapel shirt, I automatically love her
Hey chris i'd love if you could analyze vocals by chris spencer from the band unsane. I'd be interested in hearing your take on his technique.
Do you think you could do how to sing in the style of Amber Riley video? She seems like such a versatile vocalist, she can literally go from classical opera singing to belting out some massive gospel/soul song like And I'm Telling You
This was informative. I noticed your reaction when she mentioned "open throat" technique. Is open throat technique incompatible with using compression?
Not at all. They work together very well!
She Kind sounds like frank mullen from suffocation feminine version... Awesome. Didn't know her
Please review Julian Casablancas!
Thank you both for this supercool video. I like to mix music genres myself and shiver at the thought of Mick Gordon's Doom Eternal music combined with Miss Görtz' voice.
I also have a question: has anyone heard of the song "Scapegoat (Pigf*cough* Mix) by Fear Factory?
Are the distorted vocals called a certain technique?
I hope I finally LEARN how to do this... lol. Most videos promise to teach, but by the end of it you realize you still didn't get anything you can use.
Can you do a how to sing like video on Noah of Bad Omens
I kind of learned through trial and error years ago, but have done damage to my vocals I believe, my speaking voice is more softer and a bit airy now which made me give up before I did more damage, would I still be able to be able to try again and learn how to scream or would you not recommend it anymore?
With the right approach, there should be no pain or damage. I would try again... Just make sure you have the right instruction going in and you really listen to your body!
@@chrisliepe Oh yeah afterwards I took vocal lessons from a coach who was an ex ENT doctor and he recommended me not to try for a while and gave me exercises to try and “heal” my vocals which I did for about 2 years, I can now do “clean” singing without it cracking and such, but I would love to know how to do screaming properly. I definitely listen to my body now once I feel any sort of fatigue I stop, grab a hydrating drink and rest for the rest of the day 😊
At first I thought this was gonna feature Gary Cherone. 😆
Its weird but maybe if you can ask others guys in my configuration like Peter criscuola to see if they had a similar relation and stuff who put very dirty vocals also , im a drummer first that learned to sing .
Previous to that i was doing martial arts .
And i developped kind of a raspy to extremes style of vocal range ( in that topic ) right from start with a correct technique in breathing in support as distort the sound .
Subconciously i think its the mechanism of katas or how to be powerfull with a minimal ankle movement within the breathg and drumming , breathing as drumming.
Drumming beign physical and if you want to be relax to play certain things implying 4 limbs , you have to breath correct if you don't want any cramps or so.
Of course my drum teacher was also a vocal teacher so maybe i applied some technical basis to mine and worked .
Of course i developped from there , mimicking my idols .
Then by my elvolving timber and the vision i had and the range i would cover and my own style ..
I never had a voice problem .
Except , well its not a problem , my voice as high baritone kind of " matured " at 24 .
I have to re adapt , but then my range increased greatly .
More open sound , thicker , going higher that i could wish when my voice was a bit more juvenile .
In 2019 i did a studio recording and the producer was mutt lange in thrash version : The coroner guitar player .
I screamed 4 hours for a song .
He was surprised i could talk normal after .
I compress to go extreme but my basis technically and dynamics is more on the era of that developpement of singers as Wilson pickett , Coverdale , Dio , Lawless and that kind of stuff
So i didn't hurt my voice like some more pure hardcore vocalist could do .
Without no beign arrogant
But that recording changed my voice .
It didn't affect my higher range which still the same and increased a little bit since , it didn't hurt cause i still have a pretty sweet voice talking , but it gave me a Darker sound when i go distorted and fractured my distortion even more .
Kind of natural distortion.
I have just to compress a little bit then the rawness , the gravel comes out .
I started to sing at age 14 , then scream later at that age .
Im 28 now .
Especially that in some situations , i did drums and vocals at the same time too.
Hey Chris, whenever I scream, I seem to run out of air super quick. How can I practice ways to scream for longer periods of time?
See any of my videos on compression!
Ya gotta do how to scream with pure fear for halloween.
There were a few times where I would get up after laying down and would let out thos obnoxious fry sound and messing around with that got me far
GET TO THE CHOPPER!!!
what band she sings

Streak count: 123
I get that this is a commercial for the course, but I'd love to see and hear (edit: more) examples in these snippets.
If you watch the video all the way to the end... you'll hear and see both of us give examples. !! :)
@@chrisliepe Well colour me impatient. *blushes of embarrassment
Can we call her technique the "Britta Filter"?
(Alright, I'll excuse myself to the corner...)
