I never do all that to cut. If i need to cut one clip, I select it and hit control B then hit backspace to remove the unwanted area or delete if I want it to slide into position. If I want to cut all clips from top to bottom on that section then I will just hit control \ and that’s it. Everything else is unnecessary. Backspace and delete gives you the two methods you need, no need to right click and all of that.
That's what I do, CTRL B, then either Delete or Backspace pending on which is desired.
Until this video I figured everyone did it this way
Same here, i think i learned that in fcp way back when
Agreed, in my workflow the number of times I want to ripple cut is very very limited - it normally results in a jumpy video that is too obviously edited. I use Ctrl-\ to cut and then generally I want to put something else inbetween so I'm happy to leave a gap where the removed section was.
Yeah backspace for ripple and del for non ripple
I discovered this a few months ago and it has amplified my workflow like 3 fold! Legendary. I'm sure many people will appreciate this one, Billy. Keep it up!
RIGHT! Stright up game changing man!
That's basically the same way I do it, only I use Ctrl+B to cut the clip where the playhead is placed then Shift+[ or Shift+] to trim to the playhead. Same actions, just different keystrokes :)
I've was using a free version of video pad for the last 5 years, but now that I've recently brought davinci Resolve i cant stop being amazed by what it can do and what a difference it creates, and thanks to your videos i no longer feel completely lost and overwhelmed. Great Work! thanks.
I paused as you went along and did the steps myself and that helped a TON.
I've been using a Tartarus V2 for about a year to help in some audio work I do, I'd love to see setups and ideas on how to use it in Resolve as well. I love the macro ability it gives.
Doesn't Control-B do the same thing already? (ie: create a cut at the playhead position)?
Yeah, however it's not close to the other controls, so you have to go all around the keyboard and it become super inefficient
@@BillyRybka its also one more button to press.. i was already using Q/W but not the razor instead i did cmd+B..
I'll change to razor rn
MOST USEFUL VIDEO EVER. I had “cut” mapped, but didn’t know about “start to playhead”.
I prefer setting an In and and Out point and then hitting Delete.
I'm new to resolve, so this really helps me out a LOT, Thanks I found that in multiple video and audio the timelines need to be linked if you want to cut them all together, but this does save a lot of time and is much easier.
I am currently shifting from premiere to davinci and premiere actually had the same commands for Q and W keys. I've been editing videos for a while now and on a daily basis so this is something that's been holding me back to shift because I cannot waste so much of my time trimming each and every clip. Thank you for making this video I was searching something exactly like this.
Dude you made my effing year. I came over to Resolve from my paid app Movie Studio 14 Pro (needed to be able to render at 1440p) and I was used to using S for split ALL the time. I thought the only option was to switch to the razor icon. Now I can split and cut with S and X - absolute beauty! Many Thanks!
Great tips!! I'll def check out more of your videos. Just started writing and making soft. I feel soft softs will help get to the next
I've been editing on a different editor for years and when I finally decided to move to Davinci Resolve, I was so confused where the cut button was. And almost literally all UA-cam tutorials keep telling me to use the blade tool like, who the heck uses the mouse to cut. It's not precise and it takes forever. Thank you for this video.
Yo, Billy. Thank you so much for this tip. It has helped me out so much on my editing time. Once I get it to be automatic this will drastically change my cut time.
Thank you. Very useful
Tbh I still prefer the blade simply for the reason that the line of the playhead is too thick for me sometimes. B, left click, left click, delete. Still more steps than you need, but the blade just makes it easier for me to make a precise cut.
I really like your videos, keep it up!
Thanks for the tip. You can also assign Q to Trim > Split Clip and W to Ripple > Start to playhead.
Beautiful! As long as you are cutting down on all unnecessary steps. It really doesnt matter how you do it, as long as you are not doing a ton of unnecessary actions ya know?
Thank you so much!
awesome tip! i ended up using the 2 extra buttons on my mouse. so much easier now compared to before, thank you
Mind blown. Thank you so much!!
Great one!! Thanks!!!! 🙌🏻
Thanks for the video. Honestly the fastest way for me is using the default ctl B and delete method. Specially because davinci will automatically highlight what's before the cut. That's an additional step automatically done for you. Once you factor it in you're flow and choose you're cut points in a systematic manner. It speeds up the cutting process significantly even when you have multiple tracks in your timeline.
Ctrl-B then Shift-[ done
I do Ctrl+\ because it's right next to Ctrl so I don't need to use two hands to cut.
@@DarkStarCoreXyou need 2 hands for ctrl+B? O.o
@@CorrosiveCitrus Not really, I can do it with 1 hand, but I find it easier to use Ctrl+/ anyway.
You are the King! Thanks man!
Great tips brother thanku very much
Great tips as always!
Quite efficient! Thanks a lot for sharing your tips👍
I use a Razer mouse (the Hex, with seven button side panel)
I have it set up to scrub both directions at increasing speed
Pause
Cut
And ripple forward and backward
I have the predecessor to the game pad you showed here, I have the Nostromo. I thought about setting it up; so I’d be interested in seeing what you did.
Basically setting up a Premiere work flow. Coming from Premiere I couldn’t get used to delete deleting everything before. I think was doing it wrong, but this is how I would go through my footage in premiere.
Reading the comments helped me better understand how Davinci does this better by default. CTRL+B and delete. I’ll have to give that a try
Watching the start of this video, imagining some people actually cut that way is mind blowing. Been using Ctrl+B and Ctrl+shift+[ / ] so much its muscle memory and even my default hand rest position position.
Thank you! This made my workflow even more efficient.
Thanks a lot bro very nice video
Thank you! I'd had this mapped in a round about way to my F1 key and somehow the mapping went awry. This is much more straightforward. And yes, I'd love to see a vid on that macro keyboard. I use a macro mouse which is amaaazing but it'd be nice to slowly step away from the mouse.
Bro, you are a genius. I was so annoyed the blade tool and you solved the problem. Thanks🙏
thanks for this video, so helpful
Thanks for the tip! Will be using that for sure. I´ve been doing it a little bit faster, with shortcut (B) for the blade and (A) for the selection, and then hit delete for the removal of the clip. But your style will save even more time 👍
This is great. I used to use "trim start" and "trim end" on Q and W, but that required one more step -- entering Trim mode. This bypasses that; awesome!
Thank you so much!!! Really helpful!
So glad I found this channel
hey thanks for all the info. i did exactly as you said . is there some thing i have to unlock to be able to do this thanks.
I love the shortcuts. Great video
Thank you so much for this video, Billy. Seriously. Gonna save me a ton of time in the future. I migrated from Premiere recently - and was frustrated out of my mind to map a key equivalent to Insert Cut. Razor is it. Thanks a bunch bro.
Quick, fun and simple. Great job!
Great tips, thank you. Amen to the end caption too.
I just switched to DaVinci from Premier the other day and this video popped up just in time!
Thanks for the ideas!
Thank you so much! Your videos are just teaching me everything I need to know........ Thanks man
Thank you for this great video :-). I just can't make it work like in your case. When I set the keyboard like you did, it makes the "End to Playhead" to work only in the "cut" mode of DR 18.0.2 but not in the "edit", same with the "razor" it works only in the "cut" window. Now the "Start to playhead" is not working anywhere not in the "cut" and not in the "Edit" window. It would be great if you would have a advice for me.
Very good tips Billy. Thanks 4 sharing. Cheers !😎😎
I’m confused. I thought this already existed. I’ve been using command + backslash which slices. Then shift + delete which ripple cuts. Didn’t program them, they were already there.
looks like it's the same, just different keyboard shortcuts
You can also do this using shortcut like ctrl+b and ctrl+shift+[ or ]
this is exactly what I've been looking for! It's so frustrating that I can't just right click and have a tool to select to "cut" a track or video into two pieces.
Great video, thanks!
This is such a helpful video. Thank you so much.
I thought there was something like this already, at least in 17. I think the keyboard shortcut for cutting was like the backslash \ or ctrl+B or something and then there were 2 other shortcuts that were like ctrl+shift+[ (left bracket) and ctrl+shift+] (right bracket). I'm a little hazy on if those are the exact shortcuts, but they should be something like that for what I was thinking.
I love your work, keep it up!!
A video on the Razor Tartarus would be great. I have been using one for a while but would love to see your take on it.
Exactly Billy!
I don't know, why some ppl uses that blade tool!
you are a live saver man appreciate it thanks 😘
doing this when i get home, thank you
This literally helped me. 😅
Thank you, Billy.
Brilliant tip clearly explained. Will save hours. Many thanks!
If you have a Stream Deck, you could use that to map the shortcuts too.
Thank you!
Well TY. At last I found out how to sort out the most basic thing in this software. Almost no one doing tutorials actually appear to member what it is like to be new at this ridiculous video editing stuff, with it's odd in house words and opaque controls. So I will use the nice way you started with! Proper clear and simple, with the blade.🙂
Is there any way to split one clip into many clips and specify how long each clip will be? For example a 2 minute single clip, split into exactly 8*15 second clips?
This is SUPER mega useful!Thank you really!
!
Hate using the playhead to edit. I just use the fast key for the blade tool, click what I want cut then delete the video and delete the dead space. It automatically ripples it and does what you need it to do.
thank you
Thank you so much. This helped me out alot.I wasted alot of time when i was editing but this technique really helped me out.Keep up the great work
I did the same previously. I have mapped F1 to Razor and F2 to "start to playhed".
But now I went back to blade. Why? It is more convenient.
My biggest problem is that if something is selected, F2, or "start to playhead" does not work. So sometimes something is selected, sometimes it is not. You never know.
The second problem is that blade tool is more visible. It has a smaller line and you will cut where your mouse is. You can do more precise work with it.
If you want to do the same with the playhead, you have to adjust its position above your clips on the "ruler", not on your clips. That is usually far away, so it is harder to be precise.
Also, with keyboard shortcuts you can use blade fast as well:
B, cut, cut, A, select with click, del.
Thank you ❤
That's precisely the way I work in Reaper! Great!! I prefer to use A and D to do the cuts. Thanks, Billy!
Nice! Thanks!
I 100% would like to see a video on the Tartarus I have the V2 collecting dust from when I used to play WoW heavily and if I could use it for editing that would be amazing.
Omg thank you so much, this is exactly what I needed!
I was lucky enough to get a free speed editor when buying Davinci.
Thanks for the videos. Great to know tips and tricks along the way. 💪😃👍
I'm so glad I found this video after finishing up my first project! Hehe.
thank you sir!
Great and useful video as always...😉
I also have the Tartarus for resolve but I still want to to see how you use it. I bet you have tons more shortcuts in it than I do.
Hi, like your videos very much.
For high quality reels, on the IPhone then film in 4K at 30 fps? Or 60 fps?
How do I get rid of the black bars left and right on davinci? So that as full screen the reel is exported?
What are the best settings for the export ?
A review on the Razer Tartarus would be awesome. Can you do a video on your editing gear as well? (keyboard, mouse, etc)
Thanks!
cool thx mate.
Wow, Billy! I subscribe to your channel now. You are an awesome teacher to me and I understand your English perfectly too. Cheers from Brazil.
Best tutorial ive evr seen bro ur d best!!!!!
This is the video I’ve been waiting to find. This is how I have final cut set up.
Could you make customs transitions how to video? If you already have where can I find?
Very helpful!
i dont know if its new, i guess it must be but i never played with the shortcuts and "CTRL+B" works for cutting and "DEL" ripple deletes where "BACKSPACE" just gets rid of the clip without rippling
OMG this is HUGE TIME SAVINGS THANKS!!
Never even knew that existed. I always use the split clip tool from the cut page but use it on the edit page with CTR B.
Great! Thanks👍👍👍
For sure man!
yess please make a video on razer tartarus customization!
HEY MAN HOW U DOING? , I HAD A QUESTION IS THERE A WAY TO ADD CUSTOM BUTTONS BUT TO THE BUTTONS FROM MY MOUSE HAS SIDE BUTTONS?, EXAMPLE: REPLACE (BLADE) "B" TO MY MOUSE SIDE BUTTONS?
TNice tutorials is by far the best soft soft basic tutorial, I rember when I just started learning, tNice tutorials was so helpful!! I’ve now been releasing edm
Hi Billy thanks for the video really want to set up the shortcut but the only problem is when I do my razor it only chops the video and does not do the audio am I missing something? Many Thanks
Thanks for the support man! So Deselect the video layer and use the razer tool on the clip. No layer should be highlighted when you cut
do you have a video that shows us some common shortcuts you recommend?
I would really like to see a video on the Razor Tartarus.
