I've got to tell you! I've just bought and fitted one of these and fitted it using Ralph's template. Absolutely bang on dead square FIRST TIME without ANY fettling whatsoever! I'm rubbish but for the first time in my life I've cut dead square first time and EVERY time! Thanks Ralph!
Be warned... visiting the Benchdogs website could seriously lighten your wallet... unfortunately their stuff is awesome, as is the service. So far I'm into the hinge system, fence, giant triangle - these 3 are an awesome trio. I'm cutting sheets up faster, more accurately and more confidently. I'm not being paid to say this, but they are a small UK company designing and making very thoughtfully designed kit so I think they deserve this shout out.
Hi Ralph. May I suggest that on your next video your editor makes sure that the background music is either silent whilst you’re speaking, or that it’s turned right down. Btw, I’ve purchased several of your products, and I love them👍🏻👍🏻
@@MarkWiddow he has the dashboard which is what I was thinking of getting but Ralph and Peter have a good relationship. Probably send him a pair for review anyway.
Ralph perfect timing, was looking at the US Dash-board replacement. Find the set that come with the MFT to be difficult to setup and get square. Have your rail square and carpenters square already and the quality is superb. Had the T-Square on the list next but looks like the fence and MFT Hinge could be joining it. Any approx timeline ?
Ah you're grand. Most of us are half deaf from not using ear defenders for years. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Great system. I'll be making a new bench soon. Spring, hopefully. Do you need guiderails for the edges. I was going with 6x2 workbench.
Great product guys. I’ll be ordering one soon. Ditch the unnecessary music. Just watched a low budget UA-camr (DCreation) do a concise review of your rail square, so it doesn’t need to be flashy to be good and watchable. This is not a criticism of your man displaying the product BTW.
I am having trouble sourcing a 20mm bit with a 1/4 or 1/2 shank to drill out the dog holes. I was hoping to get a Forstner bit but at this point, I think I would try anything. Here in the states, all I can find is a 3/8 shank with a 20mm bit. Does anyone have a lead on where to get one
What are the best length tracks to use for the two different directions, back-to-front and side-to-side? I was planning on adding an MFT top to a home-built base rather than buying a Festool MFT table but I'm sure I'll have two or more tops at some point with the long sides adjacent and the hinge on one of the short sides. Thanks for any help.
Raph question, For full support of the under fence rail. Do the fence dogs also need hole bored closer to the edge to line up the fence with the hinge hardware? and if so, is it the same 24mm? Thanks
Hi Stephen, apologies for the later reply. the system was made that the fence would work 16mm behind the fence system, for example, if you have a standard MFT table I would router out holes for t Hinge using the 48mm setting on the hole jig, I would then router out holes for the fence using 32mm, reclaiming some of your bench space back. A new video will be uploaded with all this information asap.
Hi Ralph, I was fortunate enough to receive my Hinge System in the first batch - just getting round to setting it up now - stunning quality and finish as always. I'm finding the support end (not hinge end) isn't fitting snugly into the channel on the underside of my Makita rail - the rail doesn't appear to be worn (tried an alternative seldom-used section. I'm worried this will impact my ability to get reliably square cuts. Any suggestions?
Nice bit of kit, but next time don't have background Muzak bloody balance all wrong and your voice was not clear - are the dogs fixed at 96mm or is there adjustment? K
Looks like it could be a useful system for setting up bespoke cross-cutting tables. The MFT is nice but it's expensive and the wrong shape for a lot of the jobs I do and takes up a lot of space in the van. A narrower, longer table would suit me better. Looking forward to the introduction. I have to say that I agree with @Andy Sweetland 's comments about sound levels though - difficult to hear in parts
I hate the MFT's hinge system - ive spent hours fiddling with it for better accuracy. It looks a bit like the rail doesn't stay (without being held) in the vertical position from your video - is this the case please?
Are the additional holes absolutely necessary or just recommended? I’ve ordered the hinge but not the hole jig as I didn’t notice that requirement and just jumped on it as soon as you released the first 100. For my personal use case it seems a tad excessive just to cut 4 holes plus I’d need the parts for the router too.
Mine just arrived and they are necessary. Slight disappointment this, as this is an MFT attached hinge system, I anticipated that it would fit a standard Festool sized MFT top without further modification and that the extra holes were to accommodate tops that are not standard, but this is not the case. I'm also not seeing much in the way of adjustment so basically these holes need to be spot on so that raises another requirement for the optional jig maybe. You'll also need a 1000mm rail, my 800mm is not long enough. It's very well made mind, I'll report back once i've got it setup but expensive just ended up more expensive.
I got to setup this evening and I understand now, having fitted it, how the extra holes are a trade for a more compact design. Still, you do either need the jig, or a raft of other hardware to insure you drill the holes with precision. The accuracy of the system relies on these holes being perfect so freehand with a router and 20mm bit is not going to cut it. So, to fit as a minimum, the easiest way is with a router, a quality 20mm cutter, a 30mm bush and the jig so this needs to be factored into the purchasing decision. I did it similar to Peter Millard in his video, but a still had to buy the 20mm cutter for 4 holes. Still, now it’s done, it does look, operate and is way more precise and repeatable than my current rail square based setup. Need to make a shed load of stuff now to prove I needed it. 🙂
@@MinskUK thanks for coming back to this. I ended up buying the jig as well and I got my hinge last week. I still have not set it up as I only have a Makita trim router which has a plunge base so I need to figure out how I make that work as I am not at all experienced with routers and guide bushes. Not even sure I can get a 20mm cutter for a 3/8 shank yet.
If it’s the DRT50 type trim router, that can take a 1/4” collet. I used the Trend Pro 1/4” 20mm cutter (it’s all that looked suitable from Amazon) in my 1010, if you have a 195563 base, looks like screwfix have the 30mm guide bush
@@MinskUK yes, that is exactly the one I have plus the accessory bases so I assume it's the 195563. Would you mind linking to the exact cutter you got on Amazon just to make sure I get the right one? It’s a fantastic product Ralph, as is everything you make, however it’s not suitable for those of us in small workshops with a fixed bench against a wall ☹️.

Ralph, I think you are on to something here!
It would be good to see how you adjust the height of different material thickness
Would you please turn the flaming music so I can listen clearly to what your'e saying !
On the festool MFT/3 you will have to pull the table top loose to cut the holes. I verified this last night.
Music is -a bit- way too loud.

What are the min/max thicknesses of material that the hinge with guiderail attached will accommodate?
Wondering the same thing.
Does the hinge system auto adjust for various material thicknesses?
Wondering the same. The back side of my bench will be against a wall, so I won't be able to access the hardware to manually adjust a knob.

For the MFT table, does the front side portion with the pin protrude onto the MDF reducing the length of cut? It looks like it, but hard to tell.
It looks good like everything from benchdogs! But just a slight question: "I can not leave it upright?"
If you tighten the screws on the hinge which has the nyloc nuts this will allow this to stay up
