i agree by time youve bought the saw like he uses and the accessories just as well take door off isnt that why we have hinges to hang them up so simples to take down too with care
Haha! Yes it's very easy once you get hang of it. I'm slowing down a lot for purpose of video. If you are doing multiple doors then the savings soon add up. Also it takes just one dent of door or wall/ceiling if you are removing to make the normal method much much longer!
I personally prefer the look of 2 x 4" hinges that are rated for weight of door. It's a solid core door, so no concern of warping. If it was a solid wood door I'd agree and add a middle hinge
Yes it was close! I certainly wouldn't advocate to buy all this to trim a door! But for a lot of people it will just be buying the clamp which has many uses as well beyond trimming door!
Inspired me to comment..I don't usually. I agree with a lot of the comments re door off easier in general. However..thank you for the video as I hadn't really considered this possibility before. One day you never know might be a useful tip to deal with trimming a door/woodworking problem.
Old school here, definitely should have 3 hinges, take the door off scribe a Stanley blade on the top side as circular saws cut up causing chips on end grain and painted surfaces even when using a triple chip blade. After cutting very light sand on the edges. Rehang the door, it’s a ball ache but that’s what I always did. Proper Job🤣
Easier just to remove door and cut it! A job I hate doing but with my plunge saw (Festool) and guide easier than using plane or freehand with trim saw, I’d not be comfortable cutting it so close to carpet because IF it did go wrong you’d be stuffed😂 not to mention the safety side of it! Got by 50 years removing doors to do it and never screwed up once so not tempted to start now! IMO 🤣
That looks quite cool, I do have a TS55 and rails but not your fancy clamps. Personally as a keen DIY worker I would take the door off as I would want to take the sharp edge off the bottom of the cut door. But very impressed with what is possible, well done. Looks like you should have put a firm prop to stop the door moving while you made the cut.
Hi. There is still plenty room to get some sandpaper to remove sharp edge which I did. But agree if you can't you might need to remove! And yes agreed on the prop!
Oh I definitely wouldn't recommend buying all of this to trim a door! But certainly if you have a track saw and rail, then definitely worth buying the clamp.
That could do with vertical clamps on track to help with putting into place, which could be removed once in place to allow for cutting. Also, for the less experienced some means to secure door while cutting as you were very close to cutting through door frame. NOT criticising btw, just a couple of thoughts .
Festool clamp and rail “SO”…1st.. a mortgage needed, then get a 2nd top up motgage for the Festool Track Saw and Vacuum for dust extraction. Then spend time clearing things out of the way to open the door wide enough, that’s if you can !! Then pray that you set the saw depth right so you don’t cut into the wall, architrave, skirting, or damage the carpet….. 😂😂😂 I’d Just take the Door Off‼️
It’s good if it’s raining but just takes to much time for me once u set up hoover etc. Half of the ones I do are already of the hinges so faster to use planer
Hi. It's certainly not for every scenario. Things often take longer when you're filming vs doing normally! It really is pretty quick, especially if you have a few to do at once. I'd also add if you've got routed in or really well chiseled out hinges there's always a risk of chipping when removing door from frame.
@@Sunday_Builds Yer if u got a few to do will be good 👍 I normally just get 1 or 2 at a time it’s the job people don’t really want to pay for I find 🤦🏻♀️
As a homeowner or tradesman obviously you need to make a judgement call on these things. I'm more than confident in this scenario the bottom of door doesn't need to re-repainted. However if it was a bathroom then I would likely remove to seal again.
No need for all that, door trimmers are available from tool hire depots, in fact I've got three different makes and can trim door in situ in about five minutes,
I'm not advocating buying everything to trim door, but for a lot of people that have and saw and rail, it might be cheaper buying clamp vs hiring door trimmer
Rather spend 5 mins and take the door off
Yep it's not for everybody or suitable for all applications. I still do a mixture of in situ and taking off.
Ditto

Looks a right faff to me but I suppose once you get the hang of it! Knowing my luck the lot would slip off and yum yum the 2k axminster lol

If thats a heavy door where is the middle hinge.
I personally prefer the look of 2 x 4" hinges that are rated for weight of door. It's a solid core door, so no concern of warping. If it was a solid wood door I'd agree and add a middle hinge
I must amend my Christmas list!
You should!
Using tools everyone has in their house!
Yes, definitely not suggesting you buy all of this to trim a door!
I would bevel the door so it doesn’t look so short on the lounge side .
Yep I know it seems best practice, for some reason I've never bothered. Does it ever cause an issue with door latch not being fully flush?
Nearly cut through the skirting board too. Those saws and slides are about £500!

Thank you, appreciate the balanced feedback!
Doors off for me.
Just an alternative option that might be handy one day!

I would normally agree on the 3 hinges for traditional solid timber doors. But I've never had a solid core (e.g chipboard) door warp.

No harm on giving it a try! But yes maybe try where there isn't a carpet yet!
Thanks!
It’s not a door bar, in fact , that’s not even a term for anything!!! You’ve just made it up. It’s a THRESHOLD strip! Learn your terminology.
Noted!
I wonder if they have them for makita plunge saw ,thanks 🏴👍
The comment earlier from @timcroft109 seems to suggest they work on Makita track!

Like it, however I like to apply a bit of protection along the bottom. So it's door off for me, but still a great video😊😊
These clamps also work with my Makita track which I run my Milwaukee track saw on . I’m a floor layer and I quite often cut doors this way.
Ah glad to hear!
Awesome! I need me some of those door clamps!
You should!
How about taking the arris off the sharp corners ?????
There's still plenty room to sand the edges!
And how many doors would you expect to treat to justify the cost of such a specialist tool?

Yep completely agree. Thanks for comments
simply genius
Thank you!
If you mind me asking. Where did u get them clamps from?
I've added a link in description to where I got them from!
I watched this video, and live in a tent ! Well done though. 👍
Thanks! Where abouts is your tent!?
@ Italy 😂👍

I would takedoor off after markinghow muchto remove 15 mins top
If you aren't filming at same time...I recon you can do this method in less than 5 mins
£47 for a clamp!!!! I’ll just take the door off thanks. Couple of air wedges under it , then no damage to the hinge mortises 👍
The clamp is still pretty useful in itself as you don't always need to set a clamp at each end of guide rail.
@ good point👍
So you leave the bottom of the door un decorated do you, surely against manufacturers recommended instructions? Surely in invalidates any warranty?

Tops are always left unprotected I don’t see the difference yo be honest. Should not have an opportunity to get wet in that location.
It's an internal door not an exterior door so doesn't validate the warranty
@@wrightwoodwork you couldn’t be more wrong!! 👀

Using loose pin butt hinges makes taking the door off a doddle. No, I wouldn’t do this, I can see all sorts of trouble.
Not sure if you are based in US? Loose pin butt hinges aren't that common in the UK.
Clamp came loose at first pass
Hi. What makes you think that?
My mistake, watched again. It was the door opening. My apologies

Anyone else screaming - use a sacrificial wedge to hold the door in place?
I hear you! Will have one on standby next time!
Just another crummy gadget for those who are more interested in buying fancy expensive gear than actually doing the job.
Yeah, easier option....take the door off and fuck it in the skip..job complete...d.I.y. me arse.
Faff and sloooooowwwwwwww
I might do a video in future timing the difference!
