There's a fun story that the band shared about him that he recorded their first album in one sitting because "he had things to do later and didn't want to re-record anything" and honestly while their first album isn't the best album ever, the drums are still pretty precise even if filmed all in one sitting.

I think Sounding the Seventh Trumpet is one of their best albums personally, but the songwriting isn't the best in spots. Especially the lyrics, but songa like To End the Rapture, We Come Out at Night, and The Art of Subconscious Illusion go pretty hard.

The Rev's dynamics are nuts. For this style of music, you could pretty easily catch yourself just banging the hell out of every drum. But every time I see him go for his ride cymbal, he's always using very light taps, because that's all he needs to do to get the sound he wants. Same with that swell on the crash at the end of the last video you watched, he's very gently bringing the sound out of the cymbal after bringing the whole goddamn house down. All of the Almost Easy recording at the start shows this, too. He just hits the drums as hard as he needs to, which isn't very hard. The man had utter control.

IIRC, Jimmy preferred to get his tracks down in a 'live' recording, ie: playing the track start to finish to make sure it didn't need cutting and resampling. There are a lot of people that prefer to do guitar and drums that way, but it DOES speak to his professionalism behind the kit. The fact he wanted it 'live' so that he wouldn't have to change it when performing says a lot about how much he cared about having it right. Too many bands lean on recording piecemeal and can't play the track start-to-finish live. With Jimmy, it meant he could play the full album the way it was meant to be played when they performed live.
Gates is the same way. He'll record one track of his guitar 'live', then double on subsequent tracks to ensure it sounds that way in a concert.

As a massive A7X fan it genuinely hurts to think this man never got to reach his creative peak, his legacy from such a short career still stands up to some of the best metal drummers i've ever seen. When the rev died me and my group of friends were all obsessed with a7x and it shook us all to the core. We went to heavy mtl montreal for their tribute tour on nightmare with portnoy. It was really touching their backdrop was the boys hugging, jimmy in the center, back to the crowd with his name tattoo showing. Whenever I think of Jimmy it takes me back to those days of my life I will never get back but was privileged to have.

Jimmy was so good. Was huge into avenged in middle school. Interesting seeing Jimmy playing Zildjian in studio seeing as he mainly played sabian live. His setup was interesting. It looks like he has alot of toms because he had his floor toms mounted on his rack instead of using floor tom legs

So back in 2004 I met the Avenged Sevenfold guys at warped tour, they were playing the Hurley stage which was not one of the main stages but they would soon be massive. I got pictures with them, I got to hang out with them after the sets for a little bit and Jimmy really liked a watch I used to wear that was all black everything, but the hands would light up if you hit the button on the side. I offered it to him and he gave me A ring that he had on his thumb. I still have the ring and I hope someone special has that watch.

My foster mom got me into drumming as a way to burn off extra emotion, and from there I fell into music in general, eventually through CoD zombies I found A7X and loved it, I was sadly too late to see Rev play, but just watching the recordings of his performances and learning about how the band was formed around him, I cant help but think of him as one of the best drummers of all time, people always talk about John Bonham or Neil Peart, but how can you not appreciate how much talent and skill that Rev showed, or even his stage presence and personality, not to mention how he also sang AND played the piano for the band, dude was one of the greats who got taken way before he got a chance to cement himself up there with the likes of those I mentioned before

I am born in 1998 right. I started listening to A7X when i was like 8 years old. Jimmy is the reason i got into drumming. I did everything self taught and just watching and listening to A7X. When i heard he passed away i got very sad as i never got to see him preform live with A7X. Very not normal but Avenged is one of if not my all time fave band because its what got me started with drumming. Still to this day not had the chance to see them live but that day will come hopefully next time they are in Norway. Thank you for this vid Samus
