- Join me for this new series and follow along as I build a tiny barn, inspired by a mixture of Hobbiton aesthetic and some Old English charm.
A purposeful building which could as easily become an outdoor kitchen, pergola, greenhouse, garage or carport and workshop as it will become for me.

Found your channel during your brick retaining wall build. I DIY many projects and really enjoy your calm and informative commentary as you progress through a project.
🙏your comment is appreciated. There's a lot of noise and bustle in the online world, but that's not my style. Glad you're getting enjoyment from the content.
Mr Dan’s new build begins…woopee!
Nice…someone as excited about the new build as me! 😀
Can't wait to see this all play out! Your design is beautiful.
One word of advice: a barn can never be too big. If you 2x your planned size, you will never ever regret it!
You're so right, however I'm committed to making this a tiny space (loving living in a tiny cabin and this building is right next to it). I'm working up to building a mega-barn where space will be plentiful!
Welcome back Mr. Waterson, this new project has all the hallmarks of another great one. Looks gorgeous on paper! I just hope you won't run out of space allocated for storage and a workshop, considering the broad range of your many talents, interests and tools. Hope you have a plan B for future extension. Anyway, it's going to be epic and am looking forward to see it to completion!
Hello there again, there's no way this building will be big enough for my permanent workshop but it will allow me to try out a few building techniques that I'm thinking will feature in the mega-shop build. Plan B is very much underway in terms of the time I've spent working on a design for that structure. There's a lot I need to accomplish before tackling that project though, but I'll get there eventually.
@@danwaterson356 Oh I see, let's call it then for what it is: a lab! Haha! No surprises here. Your methodology (a teacher at ehart) becomes clearer with each episode. First he thinks and the he executes. I am super stoked a permanent workshop is underway! Until next time, have the best days ever!
Love the Tudor design, Dan. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
The Tudor style will be a challenge as we have a strict building code here in NZ, but I have a plan 😀
i love watching your videos because the content is great but mostly because the way you talk keeps me hooked
That’s great to hear, thanks. Glad the videos are resonating with you.
Good stuff, Mr. Waterson! Really appreciate you taking time to explain your operations
I appreciate the time you've taken to comment, helps make the process an enjoyable one 😀
Excellent video. I'm looking foward for this series.
Thank you. I’m making good progress with the foundations so the next video shouldn’t be too far away.
Great work man. And extremely informative. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the comment. The encouragement is much appreciated whilst I’m out here digging…by hand…again!
Looking great. You’ve really been busy.
Hi Leigh-Ann, I’ve only just got started! Hope you’ve settled well in Palmy.
@@danwaterson356 we have. Really enjoying the more relaxed atmosphere. Feilding High school is great, I’m learning lots by teaching year 11 Engineering- have used the lathe and mill drill in constructing and air compressed engine and have now learned to MIG weld. We are currently making self propelled scooters.
Looking forward to seeing this take shape. Also the wall in the background still looks amazing
Thanks. One of the challenges in this build is to match the aesthetic quality of the retaining wall.
I enjoy the way you explain the process
Thank you, appreciate the comment.
You are a wonderful inspiration and communicator. Thank you for sharing your work!
🙏Thanks for the kind words, very much appreciated.
Looking forward to this build :) Cheers mate
Excited about building this one! Lots of details still to figure out, but looking forward to sharing the journey!
This is an amazing channel and series to follow, many ways of thinking are covered and lots can be learned.
Thanks for taking your time to make this content 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment. 🙏
great narrator and vid !!!
Thanks so much.
I’m really looking forward to this one Dan 😊
Thanks Terry. I’m looking forward to the day I have a workshop to kit out like yours!
@@danwaterson356 thanks Dan, when are you starting the work, or have you already started ? I think I’m as excited about this as you are 😂. It’s such a lovely project and I’d be really excited about it
@Terrythemaker it’s all happening right now! I’ve spent the last few days removing tree stumps and begun digging the foundations. Juggling the build around work commitments and dodging rain showers, but progress is being made. Back on the job today with some more spade work 😅
Very cool! I'm glad I subbed to this channel - absolutely looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thanks for the comment and the sub! This series will be a test-bed for some techniques I'm planning to use on other projects around the property.
Longer video’s please 👍👍
Now that's an easy request to comply with! One of the most time consuming parts of editing is trying to reduce the video length! 🤣
Hi Dan, if this was on levelish ground it would still be an amazing build but having to deal with that gradient on top of everything else makes this very exciting build 😊 looking forward to seeing it all.
You’re right about the gradient, certainly adds to the complexity of the job!
I’ve purposely not finished off the design drawings until I’ve got all the area prepared and properly measured. Already I can see some changes needed to fit in with the contours. All which means more work but a better looking structure when it’s finished 😀
I admired your other project!, I'm sure your channel will blow up soon, great content, very informative and beautiful property
🙏 Thanks for the encouragement. It's certainly a beautiful place to live.
That is quite the hill to climb, thanks for sharing. The parking pad looks really nice. Charles
Both figuratively and literarily the hill to climb! The brick wall around the parking pad turned out very nicely, now I have to make the tiny barn parking equally as good!
This is gonna be amazing...
I do hope so! Plenty of challenges still to work through, but I'll get there.
Nice design
Thanks 👍
Nice i like this design
Thanks, it should look great when I figure out how to build it! The next episode has just been uploaded 😀
Great work as usual
I cannot recommend enough that you buy a 1 or 2 tonne mini digger, even a micro digger, some about 7 to 10 years old.
You would make great use out of it and sell it for the same money you bought it for in a couple of years.
You’re absolutely right! I do actually own a 1.8T digger but I’m ashamed to admit that it’s been stranded at a friends place for the past 4 or 5 years waiting for me to fix it……once I finish the tiny barn I think the digger restoration will be my next project 😀
Great content
👍 thanks
Excited for this one!
👍 me too!
Legend!!!
If that’s even half true it’s because of the amazing people I’ve worked with, like you Paul 👍
Great content Dan. And a beautiful piece of property.
Thnx for sharing.
Thanks for the comment. I'm very lucky to be living here!
@@danwaterson356 I live in The Okanagan Valley B.C. Canada. I too feel lucky to live where I do. Hearing the birds of your area in your vids is also an added bonus.
Спасибо за видео, очень интересно
Ценю комментарий, спасибо.
love your channel mate! very refreshing to see your style of video in the oversaturated market of 'quick fix' building videos. super excited for this project! also would love to know what general area this property is as the geography is very perculiar
Thank you kindly 🙏 quick fix and move on just isn’t my style. It does make it challenging to grow the channel as the YT algorithm really needs regular uploads and short-ish content to get noticed, but I’m not prepared to lower my standards or change my projects for the sake of channel growth. The channel is about the projects I’m doing which I enjoy sharing, rather than making up projects just for content. The YT algorithm will also dislike that I’m not based on a single skill set, so you’re going to get a multitude of projects from landscaping, building, car restoration, cabinet making, metal fabrication, etc. Given time I’m sure the channel will grow based on its own merits😀. The way I see it I’m already reaching more people each week than I do as a teacher, so based on that metric it’s already a roaring success!
I’m in the Wellington region of New Zealand, the hilly terrain being synonymous with the islands seismic activity.
👍💪👊
👊
If there's space, replant some trees further down the slope, it'll look great.
That’s a good idea. Would help with slope stabilisation as well. Eventually I’ll be reducing the slope with some excavator work when I redistribute the dirt I dig out for the mega-workshop build, but that’s a while away just yet.
interested to see how you will make up the height difference... another wall may be in the making :)
haha! me too! There's a few details about this build I've yet to resolve, but I've got enough design work finished to be able to get stuck in. The rest will work itself out in due course........and maybe you're right about building another wall!
Hi Dan!
Do you own all the tools you are using in your videos??
Do you often burrow and/or rent tools?
Hi Euan, I’ve rented tools a lot in the past, but when you know you’re always going to be working on projects it’s more cost effective to buy whenever you can, so I do own the tools. Shared ownership Is also a good idea, like the wood chipper I part own with a friend.
What do you use to draw design with
I’m using Sketchup for all the design work. It’s great for building and furniture work.
Next video is nearly ready to upload, should be a day or two.
Hello sir what computer software do you use for design?
Hello, I’m using Sketchup for my design work.
Hang on, what's the building by the space your clearing? was that there before? did you erect it, what's its purpose, I'm intrigued, I'm invested in this journey Dan i need to know! your fan from London UK.
Welcome. That building is my house! Well, cabin to be precise. It's a hideous structure relocated from a seaside village around 20 years ago but it's warm and dry (for the most part). I should really demolish and rebuild it, but that's not my style. You'll see it featuring on the channel in the future where I've got big plans to transform it.
Hi Dan when’s the next vid…..
Very soon, I’m filming the closing footage today- so as long as it takes to edit!
Dear me Dan that's some sketchy cutting technique at 10:36. One slip and you won't be around to produce any more videos for us. The femoral artery is not recommended for use as a workbench, especially using a power saw! 😳
Living on the edge!😬 Joking aside, honestly I’m surprised you’re the only one to comment. When I was reviewing the footage it did seem a little on the dangerous side (especially with a blunt blade) so rest assured I’ll be making up some saw horses for the construction. 👍
@@danwaterson356 Good to know you noticed your own risky behaviour and advocate change. Stay safe on your (and our) journey and keep up the great content!
