Use orange clay from the ground to seal cracks in walls and put a metal roof and add plywood to the inside of door and a window. Look up how they built tobacco barns in 1800s.
@@JustinKruger336 : That makes good sense, to use the old established technology that most people have forgotten. Is orange clay about iron content in the soil, Sir? It’s not a technology that’s used in my area, so it’s the only thing I can think of that might be analogous. Just out of interest, when I finally get a little bit of time, I’ll take your suggestion to go look that up. It’s amazing how the ideas that everybody took for granted for so long, just get forgotten when we find something else that we like a little better. Shame about forgotten technologies.
@@daphneraven6745 orange clay is the dirt that occurs naturally in North Carolina and many other places many tobacco barns are still standing like other states. Back then there was endless oak and pine trees and other trees that are now rare and water proof.
Clay, Mortar or a Wood ash cement could work to fill the roof gaps. Debarking the timber and heating them in a fire will help reduce the sap drip. Great little video enjoyed it.
I was thinking the same thing; but after laying your clay for example, take the vent off the wood stove, plug the vent, start the fire and smoke/heat up the inside really hot. Should take care of critters that live in the thatch, which is what middle ages people did periodically on their thatch roofs and set the clay hard.

I enjoyed the video, and appreciate, first of all, the work that went into making the cabin, his honesty about sleeping in a cabin like that, and the fact that he spoke. No one speaks in these videos, so I really appreciate that. And his little dog was really cool too.
This was amazing! If there are awards for UA-cam videos this should win one. Awesome project and your stellar video editing keeps it interesting--plus Rocko with her adorable personality is the icing on the cake. I sincerely love everything about this: the way you chinked the walls as you built, very efficient, making the bed part of the structure was smart (agree they would have made a great bench outside--next time) and the stove was also great, but that door hinge, WOW! Great Job start to finish--THANK YOU for taking us along on your incredible journey.
Outstanding job! In my youth I built tree houses in the forest near my house with nails and a hand saw. My best one was three separate rooms, on three different levels. Living room on bottom, kitchen in the middle and bedroom on top! It lasted for years and was still there when I went off into the Marine Corps!
I like the fact you talk in the videos. I like tutorials and bushcraft. I find bushcraft videos without talking boring. Thanks for sharing and talking!
Cool project! I love this type of construction. A tip for next time, make all notches downward facing. Upward facing notches catch the rain, like pouring into a bowl, promoting rot and shortening the life of the joint. Downward facing notches are like turning the bowl upside down, allowing the rain to shed and run off the curved surface.
@@jude7321 Nah, the geniuses were those early builders who figured it out. I just came across the technique by accident once while studying log cabin construction, but it made sense to me. Thanks for your kind words!

Lincoln Logs were fun. Now I see the practical lessons they also taught us. Does it not make you rethink life a little when your little doggo is so happy being in a log cabin with you, they don't need anything else, just you. Makes you wonder why we all need so many things and so much technology to make us all happy.
Well, we're human, so we need mental stimulation and challenges. Of course, for some, that means they need nothing more than what was available 150 years ago, and are happy with no books, and no contact with the "outside world." But I confess, I would become a weird person and slightly unbalanced if I were that cut off from information and other people. I don't have to have a TV or radio... but look at us: communicating with each other, and gathering information via technology. Our lives would be quite barren without it. I've lived for 5 months in a cabin without electricity or plumbing, and was very happy. I'd do it again in a flash. But I still had my guitar, books, my vehicle, and my sister next door... and my cell phone.
First let me say that in my opinion, Dogs are God's greatest gift to mankind..they are simply the best and second I do not need any kind of technology to make or keep me happy although I do see your point and it's a valid point for sure because without some of it I would have never seen this incredibly cool build video..
Oh how I wish I were 30 years younger, I would love to live in this cabin. You’re a very talented builder and you are living a dream life. Your puppy is adorable too.
You know what ... I can honestly say that I found that video to be one of the most engrossing ones that you ever made!!! I have to admit, I wasn't sure where you were going with the door hinges until the last moment -- nice!!! As for the insects, with the weather as wet as it was, it's really not all that surprising.

You've made a really good wood burner from a gas canister. The dog 🐶 is so cute. As soon as the mattress is laid out, it hops onto the bed and gets comfortable. Excellent first try at building a cabin, well done.
I like how you are both open about using power tools (a lot of wilderness hobbyists on youtube dont openly admit to using power tools) as well as conscious of the environment continuing in disuse and not leaving anything behind.
I think your first cabin build went super well. In the future, I would line the ceiling with a tarp or other impermeable material to prevent such drips, as well as a THICK layer of boughs, needles, sticks, dirt or other debris atop the roof for better insulation and waterproofing. As for the bugs, there are many natural options for deterring them, such as: lavender, citronella, yarrow and mint that you can also use as a bed liner and flooring. You can also cake your walls in mud made from the materials around you (especially if there's a freshwater source around where you can find clay. This would make an extra barrier for insects the go through, as well as act as an insulator in the colder months, and as a primitive grout/plaster to adhere bark shingles or other natural materials. Of course, these are only suggestions of things that have helped me in the past, and you're welcome to modify or ignore whatever you'd like. Your cabin is highly impressive, and I see potential for a full-on fortress in the future, as you continue add to, and to improve upon, your existing project. Best of luck bud, and keep that little fur ball safe. P.S.: It's actually a relief to hear you speak in this video.
De-barking the logs on the inside would help with the bugs. I've seen inexpensive draw-knifes on the web $25 to $40 and they're good tool for a woodsman to have on hand. Great Video, handsome dog!!
Wow Foresty!! Your little log cabin is awesome. That stove is so cool! One of the girls on UA-cam put a tarp on the roof before she put on logs. She then was able to sleep in it when it was raining. I see cabin upgrades in your future. Lots of hugs & love to you and Rocko!!!❤️❤️❤️

I gotta say.... That's one of the finest little cabins I've seen. Plus the fact that you only used what was there was the icing on the cake as they say. Great build and of course another great video.
Great build man! When you slab trees with your saw use just the bottom of the very tip of the saw. It allows for more control. To make the roof water tight I'd slab a bunch of trees about an inch thick and layer them like shingles that run the entire length of the cabin.
I am really impressed at your outdoor woodworking skills! My gosh. :) Cabin looks amazing. Liking the longer hair look too on you. Rocko is so cute sleeping in your lap when you drive.

The ingenuity of Foresty amazes me. Probably my favourite video so far.
OMG the puppy is precious. Just loved him. Great video. Thank you
This was an absolute legendary build. Well done man. 🙏
Use old barrels for shingles.
Yo Ricky J didn’t expect to see u here!
Not sure I can take much more of that puppy. The cuteness levels can't even be measured. Nice job on the little hut!
I'm madly in love!
Clay, Mortar or a Wood ash cement could work to fill the roof gaps. Debarking the timber and heating them in a fire will help reduce the sap drip. Great little video enjoyed it.
My Dad built one for his momma when he was a teen in Kentucky
I have one question ❓ . Is it rain proof? .
I was thinking the same thing; but after laying your clay for example, take the vent off the wood stove, plug the vent, start the fire and smoke/heat up the inside really hot. Should take care of critters that live in the thatch, which is what middle ages people did periodically on their thatch roofs and set the clay hard.
Great 'little' video ?? Let me see u do it, Mr. Big......🤣
Clay sounds more user friendly, natural. But digging to find enough clay is work.
Wow! I can't believe this is 2 years old! It was the very first FF video I ever came across! Was immediately amazed and impressed and have been watching ever since. Your videos are just the best on every level. Thanks so much!
That door hinge was brilliant! I've watched alot of these DIY shelter videos and I have never seen anything as brilliant and simple as that. I subscribed just for that! Good job.
That's such a cool project. I love how the doggie immediately took your place as you made the bed
lol i thought that was funny also what a cute doggo
The dog was quite grateful you built him a nice little hut. He jumped right up and said now go build your own. 😂
She’s a great little character, isn’t she??
Dog just wants to be close to the man.
Typical haha
Rocko is funny to watch. Hopefully she brings you happiness and company in your travels. Stay safe. Thanks for sharing your building abilities. It was an interesting video to watch.
Hi ! This was the first video of yours that I saw and I was amazed at your skills.
I honestly can't believe that I do not remember Rocco being in this video !
I have since enjoyed every video you have made. I am 64 yrs. old and am not able to hike at all anymore.
I sure do love your music and drone footage. I really like the cooking segments as well !
I await your next video. Thanks Foresty
This was a real treat to watch! Absolutely fantastic. That door, the whole thing. Thanks!
I enjoyed the video, and appreciate, first of all, the work that went into making the cabin, his honesty about sleeping in a cabin like that, and the fact that he spoke. No one speaks in these videos, so I really appreciate that. And his little dog was really cool too.
I'm still wondering what she was digging up. These dogs a genetically instinctive to be raters and small mammals.
Great Vidio and good job on your Building. P.S. I love your DOG.
I'm really impressed with the door, the whole build came out really well but the door especially was really creative.
Awesome!...I've always wanted someone to build me a tree house to live in....Swiss Family Robinson style, lol
that's so cool. most kids nowadays (like me...) wouldn't dream of doing that...
Those were the days Jim. Good times.
@@reducecotwo 😂 "always wanted someone to build me a tree house..."
Lazy b*stard. Hahahahaha
I like the fact you talk in the videos. I like tutorials and bushcraft. I find bushcraft videos without talking boring.
Thanks for sharing and talking!
A man can do almost anything with a good buddy helping him. That's really cool.
Well that makes sense, I never would have thought of that. You might be a genius 😁
Thanks and God bless you.
@@jude7321 Nah, the geniuses were those early builders who figured it out. I just came across the technique by accident once while studying log cabin construction, but it made sense to me. Thanks for your kind words!

In response to the notches comment he did halving joints 1 up 1 down can you elaborate on how you mean

I like that you talked during the video, made it more friendly and inviting. It actually
caught my attention. All the others with no talking at all are relaxing, but also kind of mysterious.... Plus, that is such a cool woodstove idea!
Lincoln Logs were fun. Now I see the practical lessons they also taught us.
The editing on this is excellent- it shows just enough to give an idea how to do it, without getting too long, and adds a few cute scenes with the dog. Really well-paced and put together. If Foresty ever wants to settle down, he can move into film editing as a profession. Or just building cabins. Or fixing cars, or....
Such a beautiful video Foresty. On so many levels. I'm hesitant and reluctant to say this is your best video ever but I want you to know it is very. very. good. different content, different production. something, but its very good. I very much appreciate the work you put in into building your structure. I very much appreciate the work you put into filming the process. You have ever right to be proud of what you built, its a beautiful structure, its a beautiful process. thank you for sharing. Thank you, continue the good work

Absolutely
Forresty Forrest he’s our man, he can build a cabin like nobody can!! Great job! Thanks so much for sharing 💜
I find my self coming back to this video quite often. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ey here we are again 🔥🔥🔥🔥
You are seriously too cool for this world. Man, is there anything you start that doesn't work? Brilliant, thanks for sharing 💡🙏👏👍
This is amazing!! Your skills are never ending and so cleverly demonstrated. This turned out more than alright, it's beautiful. The door hinge is a great idea and that Rocco is obviously a great helper.
Wow, this was something I never expected from you but I'm so glad it exists. I really like watching these kind of build videos. I just love hard work. I could watch people do it all day!
LOL ditto! But you know, I feel like, by watching it, I've proved myself in a way, and earned and deserve some respect for the soul-centeredness and simple practicality I've just shown, too.
Brilliant!
Going thru some mental hell’th issues atm. These build videos are like medicine, it’s weird but I know I’m not alone.
Indeed. You ain't alone
You should go out and try this kind of stuff. I always wanted to when I was in the same issue, but never did. Once things got a little better, I finally got out, and I think you’d probably like it too. It helps a lot in my opinion. Start small, just go into the woods and cook some food over a fire 😊 wish you the best

@@nelchid get over it my dog's are 3 or 4 years old and I still call them puppies at times ..
Enjoyed watching you make the cabin with your little assistant!!!You are a clever guy😉
Does it not make you rethink life a little when your little doggo is so happy being in a log cabin with you, they don't need anything else, just you. Makes you wonder why we all need so many things and so much technology to make us all happy.
Well, we're human, so we need mental stimulation and challenges. Of course, for some, that means they need nothing more than what was available 150 years ago, and are happy with no books, and no contact with the "outside world."
But I confess, I would become a weird person and slightly unbalanced if I were that cut off from information and other people.

Even though the title tells us that there will be a woodstove, when I saw you with that old propane tank, it never occurred to me that you could turn that into a stove! I’m so impressed.
Awesome job on the cabin. I'd say it looks pretty "Foresty" and it fits in nicely with it's surroundings. Really enjoyed this video.🌲

I like how you are both open about using power tools (a lot of wilderness hobbyists on youtube dont openly admit to using power tools) as well as conscious of the environment continuing in disuse and not leaving anything behind.
That propane stove and that door got me. Amazing craftsmanship.

Great build and of course another great video.
Great build man! When you slab trees with your saw use just the bottom of the very tip of the saw. It allows for more control. To make the roof water tight I'd slab a bunch of trees about an inch thick and layer them like shingles that run the entire length of the cabin.
I quite enjoyed this video about a dog. And guy built an entire cabin in the backround!
