love the idea that you left a note for however finds your shelter. Never know if it could save someone like in a jam. I make hunting stacks about the same way. I don't even lock them and leave a ledger in them. I'm always surprised when I go to one and find a new log in one for someone that took refuge in it. in this day and age they even leave a email address. it warms my heart when someone leaves a message that they stayed in one on a bad day just to make it throw the day. made many new friends this way. They've even shared their harvest with me because they hug out for a few hours in one of my natural blinds. Heck I've even recruited some of them to help make new ones
You are awesome man. God bless you
Nice!❤😉
That's how you do it!.
Like an old world bothy!
Awesome and cool and this is great for people who have little nature experience and GPS at least until daycomes safety is me
I have to say this is one of few Cabin builds I've enjoyed watching. When I built mine back in 1986 I put those Hinges on the Inside making it harder for someone to enter and finally used a Galvanized Lock system against thieves. I use to leave the door unlocked but I had a theft problem. The thief was eventually arrested when Deer Camera's became available in 1999. Try a Peppermint Mixture sprayed on the outside of the door and inside to keep bugs at bay. 1 quart distilled water, one cup Vodka and 30 drops of Peppermint Oil. Mix well and then use a cheap Spray bottle to spray.

No rock footings?
I always see people make videos of them building structures like this out in the woods, and NOBODY talks about the downsides like bugs and spiders and whatnot. They all just make it look as picturesque and perfect as possible. Very refreshing to hear someone talk about their shelter honestly
Keep on keeping on. And careful, don't get caught by DNR or the like.
That dog really knows how to make itself comfortable. It actually tucked itself into the sleeping bag.
I like how he never really ran off. Worked as a security guard for any potential nosy squirrels.
What is the breed?
@@iamwil6914 Jack Russell terrier.
Your doggie is really keeping an eye on things.
My brother had a Parsons Russell, he would stick around us when we went into the woods, always believed him to be a "people dog." He didn't like the noise of power tools, but would stay around instead of going exploring on his own. Miss you pal.
Like that you used a battery operated saw & drill, the lack of an internal combustion engine really made the video easier to watch.
After you get the roof weatherproofed, consider putting some extensions on the bed frame for an outdoor bench or cabinet, or firewood lean to.
You are seriously too cool for this world. Man, is there anything you start that doesn't work? Brilliant, thanks for sharing 💡🙏👏👍

Outstanding effort Foresty...I'm a carpenter with 40 years experience and I give you a huge thumbs up for this...especially the door and hinge set up...great job

A cabin build and an adorable companion. Life is good for ole Foresty.
This is by far one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Thank you for showing all the hard work that went into this. By the size and shape one would think this is simple but it's anything but. This is truly masterful wood working skills. So much attention to detail. I especially love the dowels to keep everything in place. That thing ain't going nowhere. Applause my friend.
Yep i love the pegs too were they cedar
I like how you are both open about using power tools (a lot of wilderness hobbyists on youtube dont openly admit to using power tools) as well as conscious of the environment continuing in disuse and not leaving anything behind.
That thing went together quicker than an Ikea folding chair! Really enjoyed the video!

Well done, FF. That woodstove is incredible. Pretty sure that was a Sawyer Beetle in addition to the mosquitoes keeping you awake. For rain, shakes on the roof would be my vote for sure. Also, if you come back to stay in winter you might want to install the door to open inward so a dump of snow doesn’t block you in. Love your channel.

Use orange clay from the ground to seal cracks in walls and put a metal roof and add plywood to the inside of door and a window. Look up how they built tobacco barns in 1800s.
@@JustinKruger336 : That makes good sense, to use the old established technology that most people have forgotten.
Is orange clay about iron content in the soil, Sir? It’s not a technology that’s used in my area, so it’s the only thing I can think of that might be analogous. Just out of interest, when I finally get a little bit of time, I’ll take your suggestion to go look that up. It’s amazing how the ideas that everybody took for granted for so long, just get forgotten when we find something else that we like a little better. Shame about forgotten technologies.
@@daphneraven6745 orange clay is the dirt that occurs naturally in North Carolina and many other places many tobacco barns are still standing like other states. Back then there was endless oak and pine trees and other trees that are now rare and water proof.

@@mcspyd3r1how can you tell? I believe you I just don't want this genre to be another one of those "building swimming pools in the jungle" type scenarios.

so on the roof to help waterproofing, make a mixture of the dirt (make mud) and mix in any loose gravel you can find and since you have lichens, mix those in as well. Make it about 6" thick and cover with a thin coating of the downed branches. The mud/gravel acts like a cement, the lichens grow and stabilize, the smaller branches reduce erosion. Nice job on the cabin.
Brilliant!
That’s approximately how I’ve seen roofs sealed up and it works.
that was so much fun to watch. I like how you created pegs to stabilize the logs and assemble the door. A lot of work but really effective. And your hinge system for the door was very creative. Cool little stove too and I like the stone surround as a safety measure and a massive heat sink. Best part was watching Rock claim your pillow as soon as you laid it down. She was tuckered out and ready for a nice cozy sleep curled up next to you. What a good life.
nicely done. always nice to find places like this out in the forest, it was an interesting build, I have built much smaller temporary shelters, as we are not supposed to build permanent ones , but always nice to find somewhere like this. I like the stove idea.

It is awesome! You have incredible skills! Loved how Rocco jumped up on the bed and laid down on the pillow; 'I'm home'. Those that run into it will think 'wow, who built this!'
This cabin is amazing. I also will sleep better knowing Snow White and the 7 dwarfs will be out of the elements. Good job forest!
You know what ... I can honestly say that I found that video to be one of the most engrossing ones that you ever made!!! I have to admit, I wasn't sure where you were going with the door hinges until the last moment -- nice!!! As for the insects, with the weather as wet as it was, it's really not all that surprising.
only thing I would have done different is burn the surface of bottom logs that have contact with the ground, reduces rotting caused by ground moisture - it won't prevent rot entirely, but greatly reduces it and prolongs the structure's lifespan
Yes indeed, however, he’s not going to be living there for 20 years 😉

I'm so jealous of your dog I have comment twice. She/He is well trained and just loves being around and with you. Also having a camping buddy for solo's is amazing. I live in a chaotic area to have or retain well trained dogs. indoors and out which is why I love to escape into the woods lol.

Is there anything you aren’t good at? Lol. Constantly blown away by your skills. Just wow.
Seriously!
This is one of the best cabin builds I have seen. Good use of power tools, ingenious door, and one of the few guys to pack rocks around the stove to soak up the heat then radiate out all night.
I wonder if you mixed your wood ash with sandy or clay dirt and water into a paste you might get a cement like substance that when you pack it into the moss between the logs above your bed it could help with the waterproofing (on the outside)
What a great job building this cabin!! Love your doggie, so cute!!
Forresty Forrest he’s our man, he can build a cabin like nobody can!! Great job! Thanks so much for sharing 💜
That's a cool cabin. Good job with a few modern tools to do some old timey work! One small suggestion if you live in a really cold area, a longer stove pipe will take advantage of heat that is otherwise lost. If you run it up to the ceiling and across to the other side it will put out much more heat!
Good point. I worked in an ancient courthouse in rural Nevada. They heated the big courtroom with a single wood stove and an iron tube 25 feet long across the room, radiating heat as it went out.
Also, capping the end of the pipe with a "T" section, or just a curved piece of sheet metal across the opening, keeps wind from blowing back down the pipe, as it just blows out the other side of the "T".
@@xxxYYZxxx Put another Tee on the inside right off the top of the stove and not that 90 degree bend, Close off the top and you should have a much more stable platform to place and cooking stuff and not that rocky round tube where it looked like that pot just might tip over.
Don't worry, it'll be PLENTY warm when it catches on fire because of all the "clearances to combustibles" issues! 😉🔥🛖🔥
I liked the suggestions of running the pipe across the room.
But keep it low to the floor to maximize the heat exchange since heat rises, and then run the vertical pipe up and along the inner wall and have it exit prior to the ceiling/roof - on the side wall to a standard vertical pipe with a vented cover to keep the rain and snow out, plus birds and insects.
My Wife had a 10' W x 12' L
x 14' H Barn style shed by Tuff Shed built for me to work on my projects and "writings" and I needed to design a heating unit to keep it warm during the winter and have utilized both the propane tank in 5 and 10 gal. as well as a 30 gal "oil' drum as the burners/stoves with great success for each one since the total area is only about 1,600 cubic feet since it has a Gambrel style roof.
I use 12" x 24" cast paver with aluminum foil between the floor and the walls to keep the heat transference to a minimum and also on the outside surface of the pavers to reflect the heat into 6he interior of the shop.
Finally, I just found a discarded
bbq/smoker and intend to tie it in to the heating system I now have since I can use it to cook with too.
Hope this helps someone with a solution for a heating unit for their shop or maybe even thier home in an emergency and the videos are here on You-Tube if you need them.

Great video! You showed your whole process, true ingenuity.
You will come to regret not peeling the logs. The bugs under the bark will actually make noise during the night and it can keep you awake. I have built several cabins out on my property and my first one I did not peel the logs and I could hear the bugs too. I would suggest next time try to make a bed of small gravel under the bottom logs which will help defuse water down through the base and help keep the logs from rotting. As for shingles try buying a Froe for making shingles. Its cheap and will pay for it's self.

Clay, Mortar or a Wood ash cement could work to fill the roof gaps. Debarking the timber and heating them in a fire will help reduce the sap drip. Great little video enjoyed it.
My Dad built one for his momma when he was a teen in Kentucky
I have one question ❓ . Is it rain proof? .
I was thinking the same thing; but after laying your clay for example, take the vent off the wood stove, plug the vent, start the fire and smoke/heat up the inside really hot. Should take care of critters that live in the thatch, which is what middle ages people did periodically on their thatch roofs and set the clay hard.
Great 'little' video ?? Let me see u do it, Mr. Big......🤣
Clay sounds more user friendly, natural. But digging to find enough clay is work.
The rocks around the stove is very well thought of, once they get hot would keep the cabin warm. good job
Wonderfully built, I bow to your knowledge of wood and structure
Lincoln Logs were fun. Now I see the practical lessons they also taught us.
The editing on this is excellent- it shows just enough to give an idea how to do it, without getting too long, and adds a few cute scenes with the dog. Really well-paced and put together. If Foresty ever wants to settle down, he can move into film editing as a profession. Or just building cabins. Or fixing cars, or....
I gotta say.... That's one of the finest little cabins I've seen. Plus the fact that you only used what was there was the icing on the cake as they say.
Great build and of course another great video.
Not bad for your first cabin. It will work in a pinch.
Some suggestions: for roof shingles (you will need a ton of them) cut logs to 12-16inch long using the straightest and without knots, split them and try splitting every 1/2 inch creating shingles. Secure 1-2 inch diameter straight sticks perpendicular to your structural roof logs and attach shingles with a single dowel to those cross pieces. This will add insulation and should shed the majority of the water. Try stripping all the bark off the logs because that is where the bugs live and the moisture builds up. Also once the bark is stripped off char the bottom row of logs to help prevent rot and bugs. Good idea of using the rocks around the stove to store and regulate the heat
That was awesome dude. The stove was really well done.
