Hi Dan, if this was on levelish ground it would still be an amazing build but having to deal with that gradient on top of everything else makes this very exciting build 😊 looking forward to seeing it all.
You’re right about the gradient, certainly adds to the complexity of the job! I’ve purposely not finished off the design drawings until I’ve got all the area prepared and properly measured. Already I can see some changes needed to fit in with the contours. All which means more work but a better looking structure when it’s finished 😀
love your channel mate! very refreshing to see your style of video in the oversaturated market of 'quick fix' building videos. super excited for this project! also would love to know what general area this property is as the geography is very perculiar
Thank you kindly 🙏 quick fix and move on just isn’t my style. It does make it challenging to grow the channel as the YT algorithm really needs regular uploads and short-ish content to get noticed, but I’m not prepared to lower my standards or change my projects for the sake of channel growth. The channel is about the projects I’m doing which I enjoy sharing, rather than making up projects just for content. The YT algorithm will also dislike that I’m not based on a single skill set, so you’re going to get a multitude of projects from landscaping, building, car restoration, cabinet making, metal fabrication, etc. Given time I’m sure the channel will grow based on its own merits😀. The way I see it I’m already reaching more people each week than I do as a teacher, so based on that metric it’s already a roaring success! I’m in the Wellington region of New Zealand, the hilly terrain being synonymous with the islands seismic activity.
Mr Dan’s new build begins…woopee!
Nice…someone as excited about the new build as me! 😀
thats how i built the raised beds in our community garden dan, except i used accoya , v expensive but we were lucky to get a grant to pay for materials, it should last years, i remember the accoya was hard as hell but was lovely and straight with almost no knots or warping, we used galvanised tin sheets as infill and it looks quite smart , even if i say so myself,i prefferred doing the carpentry more than the shovelling to fill them😄 cheers
Nice work! Accoya would be pricy, and I guess that due to the cost of treatment they would only select quality boards with little to no defects. Like you, woodwork is one of my favourite pastimes- but shovelling would have to be my least favourite!
Can't wait to see this all play out! Your design is beautiful. One word of advice: a barn can never be too big. If you 2x your planned size, you will never ever regret it!
You're so right, however I'm committed to making this a tiny space (loving living in a tiny cabin and this building is right next to it). I'm working up to building a mega-barn where space will be plentiful!
you tube is such a good resource for learning from each other, of course you get the odd negative comment, but on the whole its great to share knowledge with each other, i do woodworking as a hobby and got into CNC and incorporated it into my work all through online help. im amazed people take the time to explain tips and techniques, just goes to show we never stop learning, cheers from a new subscriber...P.S, i laughed when the festool sander came out for shaping the bricks, hope its an old one 😄
Never stop learning, the brain is an amazing organ that should be constantly nurtured. Good work on incorporating CNC, it's such a great resource when combined with other skills. I've been very lucky to continue my learning through my work as a teacher, experimenting with CNC, 3D printing and laser cutting. Thanks for the subscription, and well spotted on the Festool! I've had the Rotex for around 10 years now and it's done everything from cabinet making, sanding whole house floors, even polished a concrete floor with it! (and now shaping bricks).
Longer video’s please 👍👍
Now that's an easy request to comply with! One of the most time consuming parts of editing is trying to reduce the video length! 🤣
This is an amazing channel and series to follow, many ways of thinking are covered and lots can be learned. Thanks for taking your time to make this content 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment. 🙏
This is gonna be amazing...
I do hope so! Plenty of challenges still to work through, but I'll get there.
You are a wonderful inspiration and communicator. Thank you for sharing your work!
🙏Thanks for the kind words, very much appreciated.
Hang on, what's the building by the space your clearing? was that there before? did you erect it, what's its purpose, I'm intrigued, I'm invested in this journey Dan i need to know! your fan from London UK.
Welcome. That building is my house! Well, cabin to be precise. It's a hideous structure relocated from a seaside village around 20 years ago but it's warm and dry (for the most part). I should really demolish and rebuild it, but that's not my style. You'll see it featuring on the channel in the future where I've got big plans to transform it.
Looking forward to seeing this take shape. Also the wall in the background still looks amazing
Thanks. One of the challenges in this build is to match the aesthetic quality of the retaining wall.
I admired your other project!, I'm sure your channel will blow up soon, great content, very informative and beautiful property
🙏 Thanks for the encouragement. It's certainly a beautiful place to live.
Found your channel during your brick retaining wall build. I DIY many projects and really enjoy your calm and informative commentary as you progress through a project.
🙏your comment is appreciated. There's a lot of noise and bustle in the online world, but that's not my style. Glad you're getting enjoyment from the content.
Good stuff, Mr. Waterson! Really appreciate you taking time to explain your operations
I appreciate the time you've taken to comment, helps make the process an enjoyable one 😀
👍💪👊
👊
If there's space, replant some trees further down the slope, it'll look great.
That’s a good idea. Would help with slope stabilisation as well. Eventually I’ll be reducing the slope with some excavator work when I redistribute the dirt I dig out for the mega-workshop build, but that’s a while away just yet.
Looking great. You’ve really been busy.
Hi Leigh-Ann, I’ve only just got started! Hope you’ve settled well in Palmy.
@@danwaterson356 we have. Really enjoying the more relaxed atmosphere. Feilding High school is great, I’m learning lots by teaching year 11 Engineering- have used the lathe and mill drill in constructing and air compressed engine and have now learned to MIG weld. We are currently making self propelled scooters.
Great content
👍 thanks
That is quite the hill to climb, thanks for sharing. The parking pad looks really nice. Charles
Both figuratively and literarily the hill to climb! The brick wall around the parking pad turned out very nicely, now I have to make the tiny barn parking equally as good!
Great content Dan. And a beautiful piece of property. Thnx for sharing.
Thanks for the comment. I'm very lucky to be living here!
@@danwaterson356 I live in The Okanagan Valley B.C. Canada. I too feel lucky to live where I do. Hearing the birds of your area in your vids is also an added bonus.
interested to see how you will make up the height difference... another wall may be in the making :)
haha! me too! There's a few details about this build I've yet to resolve, but I've got enough design work finished to be able to get stuck in. The rest will work itself out in due course........and maybe you're right about building another wall!
Welcome back Mr. Waterson, this new project has all the hallmarks of another great one. Looks gorgeous on paper! I just hope you won't run out of space allocated for storage and a workshop, considering the broad range of your many talents, interests and tools. Hope you have a plan B for future extension. Anyway, it's going to be epic and am looking forward to see it to completion!
Hello there again, there's no way this building will be big enough for my permanent workshop but it will allow me to try out a few building techniques that I'm thinking will feature in the mega-shop build. Plan B is very much underway in terms of the time I've spent working on a design for that structure. There's a lot I need to accomplish before tackling that project though, but I'll get there eventually.
@@danwaterson356 Oh I see, let's call it then for what it is: a lab! Haha! No surprises here. Your methodology (a teacher at ehart) becomes clearer with each episode. First he thinks and the he executes. I am super stoked a permanent workshop is underway! Until next time, have the best days ever!
Very cool! I'm glad I subbed to this channel - absolutely looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thanks for the comment and the sub! This series will be a test-bed for some techniques I'm planning to use on other projects around the property.
Excited for this one!
👍 me too!
Looking forward to this build :) Cheers mate
Excited about building this one! Lots of details still to figure out, but looking forward to sharing the journey!
Glad to hear you're gonna apply sealer. Wonderful work. Lime is a good choice!
Thanks. Yes the sealer will be going on, just need to let the wall dry out first! There’s been sporadic rain for the past few weeks, just enough to keep it wet. Lime looks great and is cheap, but I wouldn’t use it on a high traffic area as it does track quite easily.
Those giant ferns are so beautiful. I wish they would grow in my country.
They are quite spectacular tree ferns, and quite common in NZ.
Stunning work 👍 This would have to be one of my favorite UA-cam channels. Thank you for the inspiration.
That’s so very kind of you to say. Glad you’re enjoying the content, there’s another video to be uploaded very soon.
That wall is a masterpiece.
Thanks for the comment 🙏
New subscriber really enjoying your videos what is your background 👍🇬🇧
Welcome to the channel. At some point I’ll put up a video covering my background, but in summary I’ve served time as an engineer, product designer, cabinet maker and for the last 18 years headed up a design technology department in high school. I’ve always had an interest in design and have been building stuff for decades, but whilst I’ve always had a desire to film and edit content I’ve only just started to experiment (thoroughly enjoying it!)
Square finish on the top. THAT! is a work of art. Thank you for sharing 🙂🙂
Thanks for commenting 😀 Square top is definitely getting the most votes!
A True artisan - with good standards.
You can’t go far wrong in life with good standards and high expectations.
1+1 = 1+1 .To make it round on top tels nothing make s no point
I think you’re right, adding a round over will not add to the design 👍
Nice
Thanks
Any great work starts in the mind. Another well thoughtout project, again recycling resources at hand to great effect. I wish you had placed some of the redder panels on the outside. There's one in particular that looks like a Rotko painting! Regardless, impeccable design and execution leading to another work of beauty, making poetry with everyday materials. I already caught up with all the videos, so glad I discovered this gem of a channel. I am doing re-runs in hopes it can help it grow, and grow it will! Frustrated I can only give this video one thumb up.
You’re too kind my friend, and thanks for the re-runs!👍 Now you mention it those roofing panels are a bit abstract, definitely Rotko vibes! I built it for a friend and she preferred the more subtle tones showing on the outside. I’m impressed by your commitment watching all the videos 🙏. All going to plan the next video should be out around mid week.
@@danwaterson356 Commitment such directly proportional to the quality of content which is so good, so inspiring. I appreciated very much the exchange you had with a couple of people on doing strictly what you love, unconcerned with the algorythm "thing". That's the way to go IMO. 3.57K right now. Looking forward to the first cornestone, the 100K in not too distant a future. I also agree your narration style is classy, reminiscent of the calm elegance of Sir David Attenborough. Looking forward to the next episode!
Congratulations on a job that has mesmerized your audience. I know because i tendo to read most of the comments. I think you should be very generous to Waterson, the bricklayer, with at least $25k to his piggybank!
Thanks. It certainly pays to DIY!
The Gods of You Tube have sent you another subscriber! You landed in my recommendations list and I thoroughly enjoyed your persona and presentation style - nice and gentle. Well done!
Welcome to the channel and thank you for your kind words, most appreciated. Glad the YT algorithm has sent me your way 👍 and thanks for the subscription which really helps the channel get promoted.
Mr. Waterson, you possess an uncanny hability to use resources at hand and transform them into a functional, structurally solid, work of art. Binge watching from the beginning. Congratulations on your purchase of a piece of paradise. Looking forward to see whatever projects you come up with. We viewers will be delighted!
Thank you for your kind words, much appreciated. This piece of land is quite remarkable and should keep me busy for the next 10-20 years!
Mr. Waterson, I'm so happy YT suggested your video. Your skills and patience probably would be the object of envy for many bricklayers of Victorian times. It would be nice if you could offer classes, pass on your skills to younger generations. Wait! I just spotted on the comments someone saying you're not a bricklayer!!?? Serious!? I'm confused. You got a like and a new subscriber who will binge watch your previous videos. Cheers!
Welcome to the channel and thanks for viewing the videos. Not a bricklayer, just someone who loves designing and building stuff! Loads of projects to come, so stay tuned 👍
Beautiful work. I really wish that I had a place for planter boxes and a greenhouse like that.
🙏 thanks for the comment. This is rather an indulgent size, but will allow for a good sized crop. I guess the beauty of planter boxes is they can be as small and tall as you like, so all you need to do is find somewhere outdoors with a bit of sunshine.
You must have used the F word a hundred times. Well done editing them all out.
Haha! Strangely enough it was an entirely enjoyable job despite all the mind-numbing cutting. Digging the foundations, however, was another story!
Wow, amazing
🙏 thanks
round over.
Thanks, it’s interesting to see everyone’s different opinion.
Thank you for sharing all your hard work, it looks great.
Thanks for the comment. I’m so looking forward to sharing the next project. I should get the design drawings finished today and start work on the project tomorrow 🤞
Celtic weave next, please!
Now that WOULD be tricky.....but would look very nice. I've just modified the design on the building I'm about to start for the next series of videos and there's going to be a little brickwork included. Perhaps the Celtic weave could make an appearance...🤔
Beautiful, but won't it have been much easier (and maybe cheaper) to use breeze blocks and then clad them? Don't want to sound critical, just an idea.
There’s certainly loads of ways to build planters, and blocks would be one great idea. Definitely not cheaper though- I would’ve needed around 280 blocks, plus steel and concrete reinforcement to resist the pressure of the soil. Material costs would’ve been close to NZ$2000 whereas the timber only cost around NZ$600.
@@danwaterson356 Okay thanks - answered my question, carry on 🙂
You did a really good job on that wall 👍 Colorado Springs , Co . USA 🇺🇸
Thanks so much 🙏. You live in a beautiful part of the world!
