Lyrics:
Out on the street, I was talking to a man
He said, there's so much of this life of mine that I don't understand
You shouldn't worry, I said, that ain't no crime
'Cause if you get it wrong, you'll get it right next time, next time
You need direction, yeah, you need a name
When you're standing in the crossroads every highway looks the same
After a while, you can recognise the signs
So if you get it wrong you'll get it right next time, next time
Life is a liar, yeah, life is a cheat
It'll lead you on and pull the ground from underneath your feet
No use complaining, don't you worry, don't you whine
'Cause if you get it wrong, you'll get it right next time, next time
You got to grow, you got to learn by your mistakes
You got to die a little every day just to try to stay awake
When you believe there's no mountain you can climb
And if you get it wrong, you'll get it right next time, next time
Next time, hmm
#GerryRafferty #GetItRightNextTime
Back when they made real music.
Thanks Gerry.
That’s exactly what I came here to say!
His band are all amazing musicians in their own right - such a groove this song !
I'm 65 in a month...never thought I'd make it....have been incurably ill for the last 5 years....every day is a struggle now but music helps because it takes me back...."if you get it wrong you'll get it right next time", i haven't got many next times left but i have always tried to right wrongs and this song reminds me of that....love to all out there, may you always strive to do the right thing, you may not always succeed but if you learn along the way then your efforts will not be in vain...i wish you loads of next times....❤....
maybe we will get it right next time! cheers over there
You are looking forward to the biggest "Next Time" of all, as we all will do one day. Chin up!
Give this man a cuddle ❤ all of gods children got to have cuddles ❤
I hear that ! I'm 67
Bless your heart
In 1972 Gerry Rafferty formed a group "Stealers Wheel".Most notably a song he wrote,"Stuck In The Middle With You". After years of heavy drinking for most of his life.He died of liver failure at the home of his daughter in Gloucestershire,England. On January 4,2011,he was just 63.His music will live on with me for a lifetime.😢😢
Thanks for sharing this potted history, I didn't know about this sad aspect.
Always loved this track. What a talent he was! RIP
Gerry was an AMAZING artist!! Unfortunately, he was human like the rest of us...RIP Gerry Rafferty
He and Billy Connally... Where "The Humblebums" from the ship yards, before all their fame. One carried on drinking, the other quit.
Thank you so much for informing what happened. And yea, like someone said...human like all of us. We all are going to a great spirit world afterwards anyway. ALL of us. I have my sources. Until we meet again, and get it right next time, RIP from this particular world Gerry : )
A friend of mine who knew him man and boy. Said Gerry was incredibly shy and introvert
We were so lucky to have you Gerry ! RIP Big Man...
Man has more talent in his little finger than most modern musicians have in their whole body. Genius.
that's what she said
I completely agree .This man is brilliant
Little finger you say ?
I say big toe

My wife and I danced to Gerry, the night before she died, at home, during lockdowns. I miss her so much! 6 months alone. 😭😭😭
Sorry to hear of your loss, but lovely to hear you both had such a lovely last evening. Life if precious.
Heartfelt sorrow for your loss ❤️
Sorry isn't enough. My brother died during lockdown.I know it's not the same, but love will stay with us forever.
*@D T* ☘️ So sorry to read of the death of your wife. It's a very hard thing to adust to, but keep cherishing those precious memories, it can sometimes help to write those happy memories down on paper & often during that more & more memories start to come flooring back to you. This tune gets better every time I hear it, pure genius.
No FarceBook, instygram, whatsup or social media at all back then. Just talented musicians like Gerry, giving their all! Thank God, I was alive to experience it all.
A no-nonsense genius and a true craftsman. No fuss, no gimmicks just honest heart-felt creativity. RIP.
Blessed...... And we didn't even know it....... I weep for the past, especially mid '70's to mid '80's.... what a time to be a youngster. How did we end-up where we are today?
I wonder the same. I weep for our poor world. Glad I’m old now, tbh.
Good question we are all in very troubled waters. This guy was great as well as most of the musicians from the above mentioned times. I miss them so much.

'Life is a liar, yeah, life is a cheat. It'll lead you on and pull the ground from underneath your feet' A brilliant, yet relatable wordsmith.
Even today, after listening to him for 43 years, Gerry Rafferty's music is like a beautiful scenic holiday destination, still unspoilt and undiscovered by the masses.
I think that's how he would have liked it.
The power of his music and lyrics was far more important to him than being a celebrity.
A rare thing these days.
Absolutely bang on, well said.
He hated being a celebrity and never wanted to be in the limelight. Unfortunately "Baker Street" changed all of that. I'm so glad I lived in that time and still love this music now.
Seems every word mattered to him.

The homo zone?
As has been noted he started off as part of a Glasgow folk band called The Humblebums, featuring a certain Billy Connolly on banjo.
Billy obviously went on to become the greatest comedian Scotland has ever produced, while Gerry went on to form the band Stealers Wheel, whose biggest hit was Stuck In The Middle With You, a song that was later made famous all over again when featured in Reservoir Dogs, the scene where Mr Blonde cuts off the cops ear.
After Stealers Wheel, Gerry went solo and had a string of hits including this track, Night Owl, and the classic Baker Street.
He was a brilliant song writer whose life was tragically cut short due to his alcoholism.
Why oh why do geniuses have to be such troubled souls? RIP Gerry.
To all the dislikes, Maybe you'll Get It Right Next Time...
Maybe they'll Get It Right Next Time, Right Down The Line on Baker St. Lol!

The brilliant Gerry Rafferty, Bands like this don't exist anymore when singer and musicians played in perfect harmony
Indeed the quality of the playing is top notch too.
Stood the test of time.
They do exist, they play pubs and bars as a second income. Though they might not write the tunes they play but play them well they do. Sadly our current climate is hammering hard talent.

Every time one of his songs would be on the radio (mostly Baker Street) my old boy would say " I went to school with him " it used to drive me mad lol .
I get it, it isn't everyone who could claim they went to school with a musical genius.
This song is so vastly underrated!
Willie Holmes a great track by a nice bloke 😎
I was a bit ticked it only went to #21 in the US and radio didn't give it too much exposure. So I ended up buying both the album and the 45.

And the Songwriters ought to honor him too!

No argument with the songwriting, vocal or playing talent but, dear god, did they need to learn some stagecraft and learn about how to dress. "It's all about the music" is no excuse. The greatest had _everything_ down.

Not a doubt about that. There was a time when it was the older generations being biased and closed-minded (back in the eighties, etc.). But having been through over 40 years of evolving music, and heard and enjoyed that which came before my time (the sixties), it's a no-brainer. Music is a lost art. Yes, Baker Street in late '78 was a great song with that saxophone, and still is a great song. Then I found Right Down the Line, and then this song, and still love all three of them. They never get old.
Baker Street is a great song, but it's a shame that it seems to be the 'go to' Gerry song for a lot of radio stations.
Back in the day, such sheer creative brilliance was taken for granted. We really weren't conscious of how good we had it or how utterly wrong it could all go.

Gerry was great lyrics were amazing, I'm listening to him on my turntable as I write this.😊😊😊😊😊😊
Yessss
@@julieraymond482 quite agree, all this nonsense ha ha good quote. But its a different world to the one we grew up in. Being a kid in the 70s and teenager in the 80s with great music, this track being a fine example. Probably why i still live in the past ha ha.
Pay attention to the signs, don’t ignore the signs.
Great performance, fantastic. Being of a certain age (72) still love music from my time living in London, listen to lots on UA-cam. Astonishing today with the acclaim and wealth todays "performers" get away with, trash and studio produced rubbish, unable to perform live, especially US 'performers'. Those were the days.
We miss you Gerry
I like this one even more than "Baker Street". Thanks so much for posting.
Pity they don't play this more often.
Get it Right Next Time seems to be more of a group performance than Baker Street (the sax, the electric guitar break and the vocals). Baker Street is a more melancholy song too. It is a pity this isn't played more often, not only because it's a great song and arrangement but also to show there's more to Gerry Rafferty than Baker Street.
Me too this is the coolest song ever wrote 🎶
Strange talent...strange man..strange stealers wheel....strange Rafferty solo...
And absolurely mysteriously excellent in what he does!
His talent was from another planet
Gerry is one of the greatest singer, songwriters that put his life in words. What a wonderful Gentleman.
Nothing else to say Donald very very sadly missed 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
He was a true music craftsman.
Good grief.......where do you find this level of talent today?
you cant anymore..
Nowhere
