I feel sorry for people who have never heard of ‘Baker Street’. I mean, it's without exaggeration one of the greatest songs ever to hit the charts around the world.
Possibly one of the best tracks ever written and recorded by Gerry. This is what life is all about living it to the full everyday and leaving behind a legacy for others to follow or even admire. An absolute Scottish talent of the highest order. R.I.P Gerry you were and still are the best…
Had completely forgotten this song...my friend had the album and we would sit and listen to it at night...the words came back to me a soon as he started. Miss this style of music so much. RIP, Gerry!
Gerrys voice has never been equalled. Its as though his voice has so many tones but its just how he sang naturally. His ability to combine instruments and harmonies are grossly unknown and undervalued. His songwriting is total genius. Rest in peace legend.
I'm only 23, my grandfather put me on to Gerry when i was about 5. When I close my eyes while listening to Gerry I can see myself in the car with him. If that's not timeless music, then I don't know what is. RIP Gerry..... you'll always be the best.
Lovely memories for you young man, well maybe not so young now ! I remember when i was 23 back in 1983, I was still listening to this guy, But many were just Baker St fans who never stuck by him, But I did. Gerry was a wonderful musician, He had his demons more than most, But he fought it with great music.
He hated the music industry. He said he only wrote songs for his daughter. He could have been huge if he wanted with his talent. And that's why I love Gerry Rafferty
His disdain of the music industry was apparent even in the days of Stealer's Wheel, when Gerry penned the lyrics to Stuck In The Middle With You - "clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right".........although part of those lyrics were directed at Billy Connolly, at the time when ( in Gerry's words) "the songs were getting shorter and the jokes were getting longer"......
This message goes out to the ones who feel they never met their dreams and the yearning hearts-just know you are loved and God has his eye on you because you are a beautiful creation of His and please accept the ultimate love the Lord so wants to give to you!
The great Gerry Rafferty. I met up with Gerry's music later in my life but what fantastic songs & music he made. The word genius is used a lot these days but this man truly was a musical genius in every sense of the word. Never wanted the limelight. His songs seem to carry so much of his own life experiences and some of us can relate to what his songs are saying. Musical Hall of Fame is all the poorer for Gerry Rafferty not being in it. RIP Sir.
The R&R Hall of Fame doesn't deserve Gerry! Nor Gordon Lightfoot, Steve Winwood, George Benson, Rita Coolidge, James Taylor & a handful of other extraordinary gentle souls I wouldve never picked up a guitar & became a musician had it not been for Gerry & those others. Underrated to newer generations, maybe. But thats not their fault. I was only one of millions of american kids who were pleasantly stunned when gerry hit rock radio in 1978. The forever impression was made early in our lives. Weve been listening ever since.... Gerry was the reason many of us began playing guitar & writing music. And for those who came from no musical tradition from their parents, folks like Gerry Rafferty, Rita Coolidge, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Withers, James Taylor & others became our musical roots. Personally, by choice these are my very roots because, son of a classical pianist, I took the direction of contemporary music.... Generation X _IS_ the 70's. We _ARE_ the 70's, & Gerry's music is forever part of us. So remember: Its not just a decade. Not just time & place. It's an open-minded, unprejudiced attitude that seeks to learn to understand. May warmer souls & kinder hearts prevail, always. But that's not limited to a decade or a single generation 🎼💜
Gerald Rafferty 16 April 1947 - 4 January 2011 age 63 Although Gerry's final years were very sad, we still love him and all the memorable music he produced for all of us to enjoy for many generations to come.. Thank you Gerald..
Magnificent piece of music--reflective,, poignant, but ultimately hopeful with an eye on the future. I keep discovering new pieces by Gerry Rafferty in my mid-50s. Baker Street was only one of many, many powerful songs by this talented musician. His music always reflects a searching, a longing for clarity and peace in life amidst life's challenges. thank you Gerry. We miss you.
Days Gone Down was top 20 in the USA back in 1979 so shouldn't be real obscure. It's just that Baker Street was so epic that everything else gets pushed to the side a bit, and that's a shame.

Kids today are so lucky. An amazing song like this is just sitting there, waiting to be discovered by anyone in the world with access to Spotify or UA-cam. I discovered this song five years ago and I keep coming back to it. If there is a heaven, I hope Gerry gets a chuckle every time someone here on Earth discovers his music.
"Spaced out on another drunk, singing in the sun, yeah, yeah. One more bottle dead and a new day just begun.............." It's an artist at his peak. Amazing.
This just never gets old. Gerry certainly had the gift of creating timeless classics and a magnificent group of musicians backing him. The look of sheer joy on Betsy Cook's face playing the organ and harmonizing with Gerry...it lightens the heart. True craftsmanship.
Underappreciated ,underrated many say here. But those in the documentary, family friends co workers, highlight all the decisions he made 3:43 that made it so. C'est la vie.
I'm 16 and right now my main form of musical entertainment is the bass-heavy music staking its claim right now in music history. Though, on a video game I play with a Dutch friend of mine, I asked him if he had any musical recommendations. He suggested "Baker Street" by Mr.Rafferty. These last several days, Rafferty, Mungo Jerry, and other classics have been all that my speakers have played. Thanks for introducing me into an era of legendary tunes that I was unaware of, good friend.
Another masterpiece of song by the late great Gerry Rafferty. Its a brilliant opening track to his Night Owl album. Terrific. Plain Genius. Master singer and songwriter.
It's a beautiful thing to think of how much painstaking trouble he went through in his life, yet he persisted through it all with the love for his people, most especially his daughter, who was there with him throughout his life. Awe-inspiring, even to me, being a Gen-Z kid. He's one of my favorite artists ever.
I can not agree more. Gerry was a class act. Superb. His voice can't be copied by anyone. I was 14 when I encountered this musician at Steelers Wheel, Stuck in the middle with you. His haunting voice stayed in my mind so when City to City was released, I knew it was the same most beautiful voice
Truly a great song of the 70's. An era of real music that took talent, not fancy electronics. Good job Gerry, and band, your music will be cherished! R.I.P. Sir!
The ex dropped her ‘bomb’ on me and took our two small children when she did. I had no clue and was devastated. All just before this came out. I wore out this track on the LP during the tough days to follow. Now, I have great kids and grandkids, life is grand, and all that is a long ago memory, but I still love this song. RIP Gerry, God Bless and thanks for bringing me comfort through a tough time.
Born in '46, I grew up through the genesis of "Pop Music" Naturally I didn't hear it all, didn't like all that I heard, but this man had a voice and a talent for song writing which set him apart. I bought(and still have)his "City to City" album, and I can honestly say that it's the best album I ever bought, simply because there's not a bad track on it, it's an absolute gem of a record. Technology now gives all of us the option to just skip a track or two, or jump to some other artist on a whim. "City to City" is captivating from beginning to end, and because vinyl was where I started, it's still my favourite source. That album is still the only one which I will play from side to side without thinking that any track can be skipped. That's all...
Warm summer day on a lake in Minnesota. Cabin nestled on a hill and a thick tree canopy down the hill and revealing a blue lake. A dock, the sound of lapping water against the boat affixed to it, the sound of boat motors off in the distance, the smell of fresh air mixed with coppertone sun tan lotion, the warm feeling of the sun and a heart full of love for a new girlfriend, a glass with ice tinkling as I swirl my favorite drink and the melodic sound of Gerry Rafferty oozing down from the cabin stereo sytstem and onto the lake. Yes, a great day in the summer of 1979 and a memory forever etched into my mind. If there is a heaven, maybe I'll once again be back there. Thank you Scotland for Gerry Rafferty.
Gerry is an awesome singer and songwriter what an absolute shame he left us so young. This is a great song and Betsy Cook is amazing on backing vocals and keyboard.
@stephenyoung6121 I'm a little younger, 51 yrs old. I have a brother 8 years older than myself, and he introduced me to all the wonderful music of the 70s.
One of my favorites songs in the whole wide world. I loved it the first time I heard it in 78. Around 10 years ago, my husband, kids and I were riding on a beautiful West Virginia backroad and this came on the radio. My kids were around 9 and 10, a little chatty from seeing new sights, and they both fell silent for the entire song. Great song.
Always loved listening to Gerry since the Stealers Wheel days. Sadly never saw him live. Baker Street was the biggie, but there were so many other good songs, including this one. Very good for the soul is Mr Rafferty.
Saw him live at the Edinburgh Playhouse in 1995. Best concert I've ever been to. One of the best, most underrated songwriters of all time. Up there with McCartney, Paul Simon, Elton John, etc imho. This is my favourite song of his.
Everytime I hear things song from the gem that is Gerry Rafferty, I think of my Father, Mother and big Brother Martin who are sadly passed away, each day that passes is another day closer to seeing them again when I pass over to the other side and fell the warmth of their embrace and love. I know life is precious, I would never take my life, but that day we're all together again can't come soon enough. R.i.P. and God bless their souls. Love always Colin.
The Best. Style of his very own. Perfectionist for sure, but he wasn't handing out junk music. He made sure it was his special incredible way. My favorite.
The greatest Gerry Rafferty. My father introduced me and myoder brother to his music. 30 odd Yr ago. We both loved his music. Played at both my father's and older brothers funerals. Different songs at each one. R.I.P. God bless them. Colin.
Gerry's music always reminds me of my brother who has passed. I have a new found respect and love for his music since I watched the interview with him. His music is eternal. 😊😢
I agree. He is but he never wanted to be rated from what I've been reading his daughter said on a article.Just shows musicians like him some generations will probably never hear of him which is sad.Ive only just started to listen to his music this morning.I can't seem to stop reading about him or listening. Some of his songs in my opinion are even better than the only 2 songs I've heard before which was Baker St which is unreal and stuck in the middle with you which is good. But I think there's a lot more of his music that is even better in my opinion.im just learning about him I can't stop. The article I read which his daughter had put just got me so intrigued.Tyoed enough need to listen to another song by him.💙
@Chris Reagan Gerry may have had his “issues” but the music industry dictating his career wasn’t one of them. A stand-up, stalwart Scotsman to the end. R.I.P. Gerry. We miss you terribly.
If you haven't yet been converted just give this song three listens and you'll be ready to tackle the full catalogue. It's criminal that Gerry isn't looked on in the same light as some better known artist's.
Having watched a lot of rock, jazz, blues, classic artists from different parts of the world I would agree he is so underrated - but what is so disgusting it's comes mostly from his fellow Scots
I wouldn't agree with that Frank. The main TV Station in Scotland recently did a top 20 of Scottish acts/songs telephone vote. Baker St was number 1, and Stuck in the Middle was in the top 5 as well.
I dedicated this song to my wife of 13 years. She still has that light in her eye and we still got a long way to go!

So am I. I’m gonna discover his work. I really only know 2 albums. I’ll explore the rest now. RIP Gerry.

I've run out of superlatives about Gerry, one of my countrymen who taught the world to sing with meaning, God bless you mon!
Such a beautiful pure voice.
Absolute genius, brings back all the memories of golden days in 1978/79 RIP Gerry x
Yeah, that is right Rafferty's music is uplifting and timeless.
I wish Gerry Rafferty were still around... I'm only 21. Would've loved to of seen him live....
Wonderful voice behind the piano as well . Very special group of extremely talented musicians and great songwriter and vocals Gerry R.
Great song
The Best. Style of his very own. Perfectionist for sure, but he wasn't handing out junk music. He made sure it was his special incredible way. My favorite.
My little brother died today. I'm playing this at his locked down funeral. Heartbroken.
🙏❤️
Sad so sorry😢🙏
so sorry to hear that, RIP to your little bro
So sorry, much love from New York City.
@@liammcgowan6651 Thank you very much
He was big in Melbourne,Australia,in the late 1970's to the mid 1980's.I grew up with his music, and he will never be forgotten!.😢
The greatest Gerry Rafferty. My father introduced me and myoder brother to his music. 30 odd Yr ago. We both loved his music. Played at both my father's and older brothers funerals. Different songs at each one. R.I.P.
God bless them. Colin.
so sorry for your loss
God bless you.
This must be my favourite Rafferty song
Gerry's music always reminds me of my brother who has passed. I have a new found respect and love for his music since I watched the interview with him. His music is eternal. 😊😢
sorry for your loss
Gerry Rafferty is so underrated.
The article I read which his daughter had put just got me so intrigued.Tyoed enough need to listen to another song by him.💙
Something about this song brings tears to my eyes whenever i hear it.
I love how Gerry didn't let the music industry tell him what to do.
No, but the bottle did.
@@suskaklapp6641 ...everybody has something 🙄..he was amazing
True Chris..! Classic Scot rebel ! He didn't buy into their bs.. His talent spoke for himself !
@Chris Reagan Gerry may have had his “issues” but the music industry dictating his career wasn’t one of them. A stand-up, stalwart Scotsman to the end.
R.I.P. Gerry. We miss you terribly.
Well said.
Not only a genius track with a fabulous base line and outro, but a very special video, showing the love in the studio.
If you haven't yet been converted just give this song three listens and you'll be ready to tackle the full catalogue. It's criminal that Gerry isn't looked on in the same light as some better known artist's.
He’s got such an amazing doubled voice. Man it’s like flawless ! Rest in power my man. Digging into your music finally and it’s amazing.❤️
72 and still listening in August 2021. Excellent song writing and music. RIP, Gerry. One of the very best.
that man was so under rated
No he wasn't.
Having watched a lot of rock, jazz, blues, classic artists from different parts of the world I would agree he is so underrated - but what is so disgusting it's comes mostly from his fellow Scots
Not by anybody who`s opinion is worth anything he wasn`t.
I wouldn't agree with that Frank. The main TV Station in Scotland recently did a top 20 of Scottish acts/songs telephone vote.
Baker St was number 1, and Stuck in the Middle was in the top 5 as well.
@@AlanRafferty are you kin to him by chance?
I'm 77 years old what a great musician
