I think Andy was genuinely in awe. Imagine getting to meet a genuine hero of yours. Slim Whitman had one of the greatest voices ever. And he was a true gentleman.
Did you know him? For all you know he beat his wife after puting a cigar out on a puppy. Like his music but don't idolize anyone. Get right with the Lord.
I am an African American, I love Slim Whitman. I have the CD of his Greatest Hit's. Some of the songs on the CD actually makes me cry. They remind me of my Father . He introduced me to this Wonderful Music...
My Dad served in the Pacific in WW-2. Mr.Whitman did too he was supposed to be transfer to another ship his Captain blocked the transfer.Because the sailors loved his singing the other ship was sank with all hands lost! Thank God For Slim RIP Sir!!
i still come back to this video year after year. the look on Andy's face is so pure being able to watch his own idol. no shtick or nothing just pure wonder
No, I actually think Andy was really admiring Slim. He was blown away by Slim's amazing voice. One of the best live performances of a song I've ever seen. Thanks Slim.
I have watched the entire clip many times and I just can't be sure if Andy is trolling or not. I hope not, he has fooled us so many times, me at least. Slim was amazing for sure.
If you closely at Andy he is mouthing the words and singing them in his head, Andy was a true music lover and gave credit and praise where due, Slim was and is a legend.
I remember commercials for his albums in the US would always claim how popular Slim was in England. Having lived in the UK for some time, and coming to know fans of his type of music, I've discovered that Slim Whitman was very popular in all of the UK in his day.
Although the Frank Ifield version was the best selling version of this song in the UK. I think Frank's was the highest selling song of all in the UK for 1962.
I knew Slim when he lived in Middleburg, FL. He was interested in being a good neighbor and just wanted to be treated like everyone else. A great talent who is missed!
This man had a very amazing voice, his voice was country/opera, his voice had a feeling of warmth given to you personally through his songs, i thought that was amazing how singers could do that, there wasn't many, Slim was one of them, THANK YOU ! Slim
I have often cried when I hear this song. It always gets to me. It is, for me, the ultimate song for a man to sing to his greatest love. Like the funeral scene in "Out of Africa." Or some poetry, like this one by Jim Morrison: "Astonishing vision. A gray film melts off the eyes and runs down the cheeks. Farewell." (Haiku further compressed, he would say)
I did not appreciate or understand Country music when I was a child, I love all of it now . there is a sincerity , precision and just pure talent in it.. but this man Wow!! what a voice .. Yoda ling is a talent , his range is no less than phenomenal and he probably inspired many in music ..Like Roy Orbison , think of it ..Slim was no less than incredible now that I watch him , and I believe that Kaufman really saw the talent there , he seemed to be enamored with him ..after all , who couldn't .. I saw Slim on Johnny Carson and saw the human he was there , Carson had a great respect for him ans Slim talked about how he knew to some he was joke and that must have hurt I cannot imagine , he should not had to feel that pain of mockery.. Slim Whitman , You are awesome to me ..sing in heaven with that Heavenly voice we love you !!!!
Andy standing in amazement. He loved Slim's music, there's an interview with him talking about buying all his records as a youngster... normally he'd be taking the piss, not here.
Sublime. Sounds like he is singing from some distant planet, where voices reach notes that mere mortals dream about. Timeless and kinda scary lyrics too. In my opinion, only Roy Orbison & Patsy Cline have this quality. Any more we should add? I'd love to hear more of these people with ET range.
Yes amazing voice and person . I'm 75. As a young lad in the 50s in Australia, loved listening to Slim..and other country singers of that great period. Has stuck with me forever.
Beautiful voice. Frank Ifield recorded this song 4 years earlier (1962), and Whitman's version is very similar - with some yodeling. What to say ? Both are tremendous singers, however for UK listeners, Frank Ifield will always own this song.
I wake up with a song in my head practically every day. Today I woke up with this song in my head and I just had to find Slim Whitman and hear it a few more thousand times. What a treat. From what I know about Slim Whitman, he was a genuinely good person, and the fact that his son joined him in the music business tells a lot about what kind of father he was.
This is real music,it pisses me off how almost everyone today in music has NO talent at all, its all technology. But he's singing that LIVE. and his musicians are all there..you dont get that today.
This song takes me back, my dad used to play it all the time when I was a kid growing up, sadly he's coming to the end of his day's but this song will always remind me of him.
I always thought kaufman was just putting him on. Slim whitman was kind oc a running jokr when i was young. He IS great, i realize now, but i always thought kaugman was just doing his irony thing abd i felt sorry for slim back then
@@ronaldworley7178 lol, I know with Andy he was so convincing, even when he was putting on an act, but I'm positive this is genuine. When I was a kid Slim was a singer I viewed as old fashioned that my grandparents listened to, but just like you, I do appreciate him now.
Lovely makes me so happy his tone nothing compares, he was a genius, what a gift he ad to open his beautiful mouth and let such a vocal voice, you were a a gift from god to put this voice into our harts, I’d love to know what slim thought of your magnificent gift of your vocal voice when you sing, love to know how gifted you were,
Oh my god I LOVE THIS he sings so beautifully and its REAL!! Modern vocals are more often than not enhanced/fake but his voice immediately gave me goosebumps
My dream, my utmost dream of a man, but his voice & vocals were stunning beautiful, I loved you my husband was jealous, not surprised, slim you were had everything a woman could want, just gorgeous, ❤️❤️

I have heard this song on the radio over the years and like everyone else I love it. But as is so typical with radio, the announcer would never say who it was. I had no idea it was Slim Whitman. He has a terrific voice.
I always loved this I Remember You melody from hearing jazz bebop alto saxists, Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean, doing it. But NOBODY has done a better version of this song than here pictured, and being sung by a true master of the art, Slim Whitman. He's performed some beautiful Christmas albums too.
I think Andy was genuinely in awe. Imagine getting to meet a genuine hero of yours. Slim Whitman had one of the greatest voices ever. And he was a true gentleman.
I think so too
Yes he was
it's a gag....its all theater.....lol

My God, what a wonderful voice.

Claudia, anybody who DOESN'T cry listening to this song has a heart of stone.
I have a memory of my daddy liking this man. He was a giant in so many ways. He was never ashamed of his love for Jesus.
You're not African American. You're black American. 🇺🇸
Who cares what color you are

Slim's voice is obviously outstanding, but the incredible orchestra also really makes this stand out as the best recording.
Ssshhh! Don't tell anyone.....
Why can’t we have talent of this caliber once more. Slim was simply amazing.
One of the few times Andy is being completely sincere
Absolutely. That was for real.
No, I actually think Andy was really admiring Slim. He was blown away by Slim's amazing voice. One of the best live performances of a song I've ever seen. Thanks Slim.
absolutely true admiration I believe , how could you not..Andy was not goofing him ..I feel the same way now.. Whitman's voice is Legendary

Slims voice is stunning. He sings so beautifully and effortlessly every song, every time. We miss him but grateful for u tube.
I'm speechless.
@Dibujitos & Maquinitas THIS IS LIVE - NOT A PLYBACK
If you closely at Andy he is mouthing the words and singing them in his head, Andy was a true music lover and gave credit and praise where due, Slim was and is a legend.
Andy was the best Elvis impersonator ever. Maybe he is thinking of putting together an impersonation of Slim's singing here.
Just pure talent. Voice and guitar and nothing else.
His singing sends chills down my neck and back !
This is one of the best live performances by anyone. complete perfection. .
Find a flaw, I dare you!
It really is a "consummate performance" a total home run.

my ex sil lived down the road from them, she'd go to their home and said they were the kindness she'd had ever meet ..
Frank Ifield who may have done the song first.
Slim, God bless, you were so smooth! God gave you great pipes and you represented like a gentleman! OUTSTANDING!
Slim Whitman introduced by Andy Kaufman. The greatest video known to man.

they sure don't make them like they used to....timeless
I used to laugh my ass off at those commercials in the 80s ....but this guy really was good!! ...
Some people really are unforgettable!! ❤
Slim Whitman was a strong Christian man and I know he would not appreciate some of the language. He lives forever with the God he loves thank you

Only one modern day singer can match Slim Whitman and Roy Orbison and that is Raul Malo of the Mavericks who does versions of several of their hits.
Listen to Slim sing WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE!
You can listen to the great Jackie Wilson and hear a range...
Always thought of him as a joke..Never APPRECIATED, what an incredible voice this man had..

Fabulous. Two amazing singers. Back in the day when there was real music.
He is really enjoying delivering an amazing performance.
What a beautiful stunning voice ❤
Amazing performance by Slim and the rest of the band
He's a superb singer .
Amazing and soulful performance. Even as Andy loves this man’s singing…in heaven so does Elvis Presley!

Slim was my favourite and always will be.

No way....He's totally not even close to being serious....it's all a gag! lol

And I remember Slim!thanks for sharing this beautiful song, greetings from Lapland
Yeah , baby. Love & beauty knows no silly boundaries.
I saw Slim perform this song live when when he toured South Africa in the early sixties. Thanks for uploading.
