My grandmother loved this guy and bought the album sold on TV. Me and my sister would keep our friends away cause we were so embarrassed. My grandmother told us how very few people could sing like him. We scoffed thinking yeah whatever. Stumbling on this after all these years I now understand that she was so right whether you like this type of music or not!!
What a gracious guy! I know lots of folks poked fun of Slim, but when you heard him speak, you couldn't help but admire him. I truly wish he was still around.
I truly miss my dear friend Slim Whitman , he and his family were such wonderful friends to me an my family . As he say's in his song -- "I REMEMBER YOU* Slim !!
I was indoctrinated into Slim Whitman in 1972 by my mother in law (A Smart woman) Born in Scotland, she emigrated to Australia in the 60's I met and married her daughter in the early 70's. She (mom in law) introduced me to Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash to name a few. She was waaay ahead of her time. God bless you Mum in law.
It all comes back to this. After all the rock and heavy metal music, and folk and all the other styles of music, we arrive eventually by discovering Slim Whitman.
I never heard of Slim until I was watching a rerun of the Andy Kaufman show with Slim as a singing guest. He performed "I remember you" and I got goosebumps. From there I managed to find some of his recordings and listen to them often. As a singer and guitarist myself, I worked out an arrangement of "I remember you" in the spirit of Slim's version.
I've been a Slim fan since I first heard him in about 1951. He was a very unique singer and my very favorites were his Country/Western songs. Long live his work. I'm sure many younger folks will discover him and older folks will re-discover him as I did recently. God bless.
Seemed like a nice man and a true professional. He didn’t let those who made fun of him get to him. He kept plodding along and finally, the brass ring was his. How many of us have that kind of tenacity?
I can know how my daddy admired him and I am 76 years old. He was as strong as his faith in Jesus and faithful to his wife as long as he lived. They are buried together.
I learned about Slim from those ads. I love his singing, and am glad to see from this clip that being a “punch line” left him laughing to the bank, as well as keeping his career in perspective re: his true fans. Bravo Mr Carson for having Slim on the show, and treating him with respect.
I bought the cassette because of the ad on tv. I was taken absck by the strange country singer with the most unusual voice. Now i realize what a "treasure" he truly was. His voice and manner of singing is infectous. He will truly be missed.
I was born in 1956 and can remember hearing his songs for years, everyone in my family listened to country and Slim was a big part of that and I can remember when I left the Marine Corps in 79 and I did see these commercials in the early 80s. He was a legend. 👍❤️🇺🇸
Slim was focused on doing his best to entertain. He was great! His songs bring tears to your eyes. He lived a successful life in music and seemed to enjoy every minute. Thanks Slim!
1950s 1960s --- YES HE WAS A BIG HIT IN NORTH AMERICA--- played on Country Stations and in Juke-box all over. I was there I know! O always knew where Slim was, never lost to me. Versatility of songs makes him the greatest singer of the 20th century.
Slim had such a grand talking voice. The kind men can listen to over a few sips of sour mash on a slow easy Saturday afternoon. RIP Slim and thank you for enriching our listening lives.
Sometime back around 1985 I won a Slim Whitman album from a Radio station on a call in. I suppose no one else called in, but i enjoyed his singing even if I did not really know who he was. I always heard he lived in Middleburg, Florida but never checked as I was close by.
I had never heard of him, but in Spain in 1974 at a friend’s house, I heard his Scottish wife playing Slim Whitman’s albums. Interesting voice, I thought.
No need for the sellers of old Slim's records after this Carson plug. Carson saved you millions of ad bucks. I remember these late night ads for Whitman. He's really good because he had a different voice.
Я недавно открыл для себя Слима Уитмэна!!! Слушаю все его песни и восхищаясь!!! Весьма необычный голос и исполнение!!! Всё, что он исполняет вызывае восторг и умиление!!!
I remember the commercial. I always heard it in my mind as if "have I told you lately that I love you, blue eyes crying in the rain?" was all one thing. This commercial prompted me to buy the record, and then I was pleasantly surprised because he was a much better artist than I had suspected. And I liked him when I thought he was "okay." I don't have the record any more, but "Rose Marie," "Indian Love Call," "Secret Love;" to me, now, those are Slim Whitman songs.
George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson listed him as a major influence. I just now got that from Wikipedia; I had never looked him up before.
What a surprise his version of I Remember You, wow, his recording of Indian Love Call used i the movie Mars Attacks, it was used as a juke of course but it shows how popular some singers were and still are
He was a little kind of what he said to Johnny Carson. For Slim was not liked; from the Nashville group, etc. So they just turned away from him over the yrs. So, he went over to England and "around' nations. And they instantly when crazy over "their" Slim Whitman. And it just went greater and greater all over; except America (He was hidden). Sad, but OH so true. Well Jesus said this in... Matthew 19:30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. And Mr "hidden" Slim Whitman; proved that to the "nth" degree. May Jesus rest his precious Soul. For Slim was one of the kindness singers, all over the world. And they loved Him unbelievably...of course "To Bad America"! Thus the greatest is now the least; by worshiping satan. Sad, but OH so true.
AugustSchweiger; Yeah, he was. He was always in and out of the country charts, and had a couple of big crossover pop hits in the early 1950's. The ridicule he received for the commercial was from the usual load of punks and potheads who were going to Kiss and Ted Nugent concerts and didn't know or care about anything else.
It's difficult to take Slim seriously at first because of the greasy hair, ungroomed eyebrows, bad teeth, and unflattering mustache. Let's face it: he was a homely looking guy. But he sang his heart out and was a dedicated church of the Brethren deacon. Good for him.
My grandmother loved this guy and bought the album sold on TV. Me and my sister would keep our friends away cause we were so embarrassed. Slim Whitman was a true gentleman and a great singer.

I truly miss my dear friend Slim Whitman , he and his family were such wonderful friends to me an my family . As he say's in his song -- "I REMEMBER YOU* Slim !!
My daddy has been gone a long time but he liked Slim Whitman.
RIP Slim
This brings such happy memories of my youth, thanks for everything you brought into our lives, ❤️
My mother ran a beerjoint back in early 1960's, had several of Slims songs on the jukebox, 6 plays for 25¢!! Good days good times
@redwing46901. If you ever talk to Bryon Whitman, please tell him that I and mother loved he and his father's music. 🙏
What a voice!!!

I have loved his singing ever since I heard him as a kid I'm 74 years old
Possibly one of the most underappreciated singers ever. Not for me. His voice was one of a kind
My mother in law knew class and talent when she heard it and kindly pointed it out to me.
The man whose music saved the Earth!
🤯
take that, martians!
Damn Martians were no Match against Slim!
I knew who he was before Johnny Carson !! Mom used to love Slim Whitman and I do too. Especially "I Remember You ."
We always love slim whitman and his songs .God bless him always .😊
Yes as a kid I made fun of the commercial but I always loved the voice and the fact that he was a humble, kind person to boot. A real class act.
I agree totally.

Been listening to Slim in NZ since I was a kid! Well over seventy now.
He was GREAT ...Just Down to Earth Person with Great Voice.
He was a real gentleman and wonderful singer.

Andy was a fan and was mesmerized. It was the Midnight Special. It’s on UA-cam.
Elvis loved him and was a headliner and Elvis was a part of his show
He didn’t think too much of Jerry Lee Lewis though. He told me he helped him with an album but couldn’t wait to get rid of him.
His singing brings back memories of wonderful times. God bless Slim Whitman 😊💖

One of the absolute greats of country .
A voice not many could compare.
I like this fella. He seems relaxed and genuine and appreciative.
Seemed like a nice man and a true professional. He didn’t let those who made fun of him get to him. He kept plodding along and finally, the brass ring was his. How many of us have that kind of tenacity?
Amen! For Slime didn't know he couldn't do it. "So he went ahead and done it". May Jesus rests his precious soul.
He laughed right along with them, all the way to the bank! Good for him!
He always seems to be singing to the Heavens !
I can know how my daddy admired him and I am 76 years old. He was as strong as his faith in Jesus and faithful to his wife as long as he lived. They are buried together.

❤ I Love To Hear Him Sing, He's Also A U.S.NAVY Veteran In Either WW2 or Korean War
Great live performance. He showed them who he was - a star .
Elvis used to open for Slim. Think about that.
I bought the cassette because of the ad on tv. I was taken absck by the strange country singer with the most unusual voice. Now i realize what a "treasure" he truly was. His voice and manner of singing is infectous. He will truly be missed.
Back when they sang and didn't try to eat the mike and didn't holler. Real music. Had a beat and you could dance to each song
Such a unique singing voice. Wonderful.

I picked up that album in a thrift store. I'm hooked now. RIP Slim, a real talent and gentleman.
He was massive here in New Zealand.
I have Indian Love Call on my iTunes list just in case we are visited by Martians. Ack Ack.

Johnny was a real musician and appreciated good talent, like Slim!
What a pure angelic voice ❤
The Beatles said Slim was a major influence on their sound,I read this in an old article /
The Best of The Best
Love!!!
He bought my soul at calvary.he sung that song very well.
A true gentleman with a golden voice 😊
He was my favorite back in the forties. Jim Day

Unique singing style, kind of grows on you.
remember his songs as a child
This is wonderful
Great song and voice
I remember Slim Whiman
Dylan mentioned his name in a 1969 interview. It took that commercial over a decade later for me to realize who he was.
Beautiful
I like him also--God Bless--
very fine musician...
Wonderful man. Carson was not kind enough in this interview. It must be known that Elvis Priestley was opening for him in some of Whitman's concerts.
George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson listed him as a major influence. I just now got that from Wikipedia; I had never looked him up before.

His voice killed the Martians in Mars Attacks!
Now that Slim is gone, we'll have to worry about Martian attacks again.

Bobby Vinton does a real nice cover of I remember you.
Weird Al sent me here from The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota
That's a classic!
He seemd like a decent talented man
Where's the mention of his Canadian origin?
It’s probably absent because he wasn’t Canadian.
❤😂❤ESCARGENCY ❤😂❤
I heard slim wrote most of his songs in prison
So he wasn't really known in the US?
he had some minor success in 50's, but wasn't a top selling artist here.
Past about 55 or 56 he kinda faded into obscurity with a few top 10-15s in the 60s

"Indian love call" and "Rose Marie" were huge not
minor hits when they came out in the USA.
He's been around all along.
I'm still bummed that he didn't join the Beatles.
