I can't believe that either as I'm a 50-something black woman who has known him since I was a kid because of those album commercials from the 70s and 80s, lol.
@ okay sir, I just watched George Baker and he did a pretty good job with it. I still have to rate Mr.Whitman and his yodeling. Lol I will say I have laughed and laughed hard while listening to him. Thank you for your response. Have a beautiful Sunday.

There is no other song like this in the world. So different, so beautiful, so inspiring. And this version is so sweet and nostalgic. I love it when Slim jumps up into his falsetto... My grandma used to love this song, and this week I’ve learned that I’m going to be a grandpa for the first time! Will be listening to this with my grandkids for sure!

We used to laugh at his commercials pushing his albums, with this exact song.I used to immitate it and get lots of laughs. Then I saw the Martian movie back in the nineties and I became a bonified fan.Now I love his music for real.
Slim Whitman sang for his fellow servicemen under duty in WW2. He was just as scared as they were, but he brought som comfort to them. Years later decorated soldier Audie Murphy tormented with memories of the war found relaxation and got to sleep listening to Slim. A little more more important than the Martian movie, that almost made fun of him. I grew up with Slims early records at home, and I still enjpoy them, no matter how some people might think of him.
I'm not a fan of most country/western music; being forced to listen to it at work. But ole Slim was one of a kind performer. You imagine that white dove flying over the mountain.
70's Kids got a lot of mileage out of this ;)- . Between Slim Whitman & Boxcar Willie's TV commercials many a gut was busted amidst me and my friends as we tried to out Yodal one another with Hobo music. Thanks for the memories Slim (RIP Parski)
I remember the ads for his records on TV, claiming he sold more records than Elvis. Then, I listened, he is right there with Willie Nelson and Marty Robbins for me.
In the early 80's I learned Opticianry from a guy named Charles Neils in Port Hueneme, CA. He was a radioman on board a US Navy Destroyer involved with the bombardment of Iwo Jima. He spoke to me about life on board ship and also about how Slim Whitman's tunes helped the crew to manage their emotional trauma and how Mae West was the biggest Sex Symbol there ever was!! Slim was fabulous. I miss him. Saw him on Grand Ole Opry in early 50's. Never forgot him.
Incredible falsetto -- cannot believe I had to live 70 years before discovering who Slim Whitman was. Better late than never!

A very underrated singer.
Slim Whitman is one of the best male singers in American History! Not enough people in today’s world know Him!
I like that he is just singing. No dramatic face contortions or jumping around
Agreed!
I believe it's lip synching.
@@redrocks1983 If he was actually singing, you'd see it in his throat, his vibrato was outstanding.

I love the way Slim put his heart into the music. His words make it easy to visualize a dove soaring over his desert hacienda to the mountains beyond.
It was he who brought the Martians to their knees.

When the sun shines on the mountain
And the night is on the run
It's a new day
It's a new way
And I fly up to the sun
I can feel the morning sunlight
I can smell the new-mown hay
I can hear God's voice is calling
For my golden sky light way
Una paloma blanca
I'm just a bird in the sky
Una paloma blanca
Over the mountains I fly
No one can take my freedom away
Once I had my share of losing
For they locked me on a chain
Yes they tried to break my power
Oh I still can feel the pain
Una paloma blanca
I'm just a bird in the sky
Una paloma blanca
Over the mountains I fly
No one can take my freedom away
Una paloma blanca
I'm just a bird in the sky
Una paloma blanca
Over the mountains I fly
No one can take my freedom away
