- A couple months ago I was down at the farm evaluating 7 - .17 HMR ammos from 100 yards with my Savage .17 HMR Model 93R17. Shooting both 17 Gr and 20 Gr rounds. Later on I moved back to 150 yards, what a difference. That's Right: HAPPY NEW YEAR! Old family tradition, got to have pork and sauerkraut on New Years day, not sure why anymore, but we still do it!
Just goes to prove every rifle has an ammo that suits it, never seen Winchester ammo group like that in any caliber at any distance.

I own a Marlin 17 with a bull barrel, the groups open up also on mine the more the barrel heats up. You had some very nice groups, fun gun to shoot and ammo can still be found. Thanks
Mark, Thanks for viewing and commenting. I think your gun is likely a bit better than mine. Mine is pretty much standard. Other folks have mentioned to me about barrels heating up, but that was usually on the heavier calibers. I expect the .17's also heat up with enough shooting. The .17 is just fun to shoot, and as you said, ammo can still be found. Just for fun, I backed up to 150 yards, I had really poor results, may eventually do a video just to embarrass myself. I think you could definitely shrink those groups on a calm day. That wind looked and sounded pretty fierce.
Tim, Thanks. I tend to agree, especially shooting those light bullets. I was down at the farm a couple days ago with probably a worse wind but I was shooting .44 Mag out of a rifle, probably not much effect on them. Thanks again and take care.

My CZ 455 spread the shots like yours do on 100 meters, at that point I had 200 rounds or so since cleaning, had no tools for the bore. So I got me a kitt and cleaned it well and it came back to sub MOA groups. Atleast my rifle likes to be clean. Theory is the tight bore combined with the velocity leaves residues in the barrel.

I have the CZ 452 and 455 in .17hmr. Both shoot the Hornady max 17 grain very well and sub MOA. Great round for ground squirrels.
@@driverjohns6051 Sounds like you have a couple great guns. My gun is a bit more generic, but .17 HMR's are just plane fun to shoot. I have probably not shot my .17 often enough to say what works best in it. I think for the most, my problem is ME! One of my good friends used his .17 to shoot groundhogs, and said that it really did the job. Thanks again.

When testing any rimfire ammo I always shoot 5 groups of 5 rounds to try and average the human factor as much as possible.

Great vid I have a CZ in 17 hmr and at 100 it has .5 moa groups with hornady 17 and 20 gr it’s a great cal to shoot

The Hornsby v max did ok at 50 yards but the A17 ammo in the 200 round box outperformed my others. I may try the Winchester 20g. Thanks for the video

Not sure if you're aware, but all the .17HMR ammo is loaded by CCI, they just put different head stamps and labels on it. The .20gr XTP and 20gr "Gamepoint" are literally the same bullet. All the VMAX bullets are Hornady bullets with different colored tips. There is a slightly higher velocity load designed for the semi-auto HMR rifles, and there's also the slightly newer CCI VNT which is a thinner, segmented jacket with a polymer tip and supposedly ~100fps faster. The CCI .17gr TNT is also a thinner jacket and a more hollow point. I haven't had bad results with any of them so far in my Henry.

@@bobcatforever3485 I guess Winchester might load theirs, but I'm not sure. I got a box of CCI TNT yesterday and the seating depths are all visibly different. Some of them are 1.5mm difference from each other. I haven't had this problem with the VMAX or XTP loads yet, but I suppose it could just be that there are bad batches.

The trouble with 17 HMR being Rimfire, Unlike .22 There is not a lot of ammo availability to find which will suit your gun. Some rimfires can be finnicky. I have a Lithgow ,I expected better as Im anal about groups. Up to date here in Australia there are only a handful of different bullets to get the right 1 .

A friend of mine used his .17 to take out Ground Hogs that were putting holes all over the palace whereas his .22 LR just seemed to bounce off of them. I am pretty sure the gun store near me doesn't have it, last time I was there they were down to maybe two different .17 HMR's (but that was better than a lot of the other ammo). Allen, Thanks! I actually got the plans for the bench off of You Tube a couple years back and made just a few modifications. I also have a bit smaller bench at 50 yards, not made a heavy as the 100 yard bench. But only had about $50-60 in materials for that one. Thanks again and take care. Happy New Year.
Thanks for the video! Im thinking about buying myself a 17HMR barrel for my Sako Quad rifle. I can change between 22LR, 22WMR, 17HMR and 17MACH2. I bought it with the 22LR barrel.

I once was a 17HMR hater but after doing my homework & finding out how fast the velocities on these bullets are I went & bought a little badger single shot 17HMR to use as a plinker/survival rifle. This is a fun round to shoot with your kids & the whole family.

All these guys saying great groups....groups like these are exactly why I sold my savage 17 hmr. I'm not blaming the shooter in this video at all...this is just typical results that I've seen and had personally. 25-50 yards it's a good little round, but people overlook the 800 lb gorilla in the room when it gets to 100 yards.

There is a serious flaw in your test. I have found the 17hmr is very accurate, but very sensitive to the wind. Gusty wind or even a strong breeze around trees will open up the groups. I tested a Savage and it preferred Hornady VMAX. My Anschutz preferred CCI TNT and five consecutive 4-shot groups measured .35 .36 .65 .72 .56 CTC. Do the test on a dead calm day and send the rounds down range as fast as possible before the wind changes. I think you will be surprised. Also try shooting with the wind blowing from your 6 oclock and let the barrel cool between groups.
I shoot prairie dogs with mine. The wind is often dead calm at sunrise where I shoot so that is when I hunt. 200 yard shots are not a problem. If the wind picks up I head for home rather than waste ammo.

@@bobcatforever3485 I did my testing shooting prone with a bipod and rear bag. My groups are also great shooting from a bench with bipod and rear bag. I align the crosshairs without touching the rifle, then I mount the rifle with light pressure at the shoulder and cheek, then shoot. This seems to give me very consistent hold and recoil. My Atlas bipod has a slight amount of give so this gives me a bit of consistent backwards recoil. Interestingly though, my groups were not great with a lead sled. I think it's because I was muscling the rifle onto the target. I've tried timing my shots with my heart beat but haven't had much success because I can't feel my heart beating. Since I was shooting 5 groups for each ammo type, I cleaned the barrel before testing each type. I'm 65 years old so don't let age discourage you. I also avoid drinking coffee because the caffeine makes me shake. Hope you find all the suggestions helpful.

I may try going back to the bipod and bag over the lead sled, plus I did pick up a bit lighter gun rest that will allow for a bit more recoil and give it a try also. I may also be holding on to the gun a little too much. I am 77 and have stopped drinking anything with caffeine in it a while back. Thanks again and enjoy your evening.

Wow, those are some terrible groups from a 17HMR. might want to have the gun checked and give it a serious cleaning. I have a Rugar American, cheap gun, but it shoots dime size groups at 100. Ammo only changes point of aim not much on the group size with my gun.

My ruger precision 17 hmr loves the federals and cci. Groups very nice at 50 and 100. I can shoot pennies at 100 yards with no prb. I just tryed the normas and I'd have to say not very Consistent.

Your rifle shoots exactly, precisely, completely like mine does. It is, at best, a 1.75 MOA rifle. Most of the time it's worth 3-4 MOA. I can't tell if it's the wind or Savage's barrel or the lackluster accuracy from CCI, who makes all the ammo.

Nice video and thanks for sharing. I'm an unlucky owner of about 10 boxes of 50 Hornady ammo with cracked brass. I had stocked up while prices were still low before the Obummer ammo shortage days. Sadly they're mostly just fliers. The new ammo I purchased now in spring of 2024 sure shoots a LOT straighter than the bad batch junk I had bought back in the low price ammo days... Missing just isn't as much fun as hitting the bull's eye. Should the term bull's eye be changed for the wokesters? They might not like such terminology! Skrew them!

Hey bobcat nice shooting I don’t own a 17 so I’m in no way trying to sound critical because I thought your shooting was pretty good I have only shot the Hornady and cci and seemed to do better with the Hornady! But two weeks ago sportsman warehouse had a brand of 17 I didn’t recognize or can’t remember I should have bought a couple hundred rounds for down the road anyway love your laid back aproach and can’t wait to to see more. One thing I do know is that a little wind or a blade of grass and the 17 is off

Well, you're shooting superlight 17 and 20 grain bullets with a bc of .125 in a bit of a crosswind, so that's going to give you some extra horizontal dispersion. Try it in the morning or evening before the sun gets the wind going. Or maybe it's just a lousy gun. I also bought a Savage17 HMR Model 93R17. And the workmanship was so bad I called the factory foreman up, and got rid of the gun the next day without firing a shot, and replaced it with the Browning T-Bolt version.
Or maybe it's a cheap junky scope with parallax problems. Or maybe all of the above. Next time, fire 3 5-shot groups with each ammo type in clam wind. It sometimes helps a bit if you clean the barrel when changing ammo types because the bullet jacket coatings left in the barrel are different. However, my money's on it being a cheap gun or a cheap made-in-China scope. I can't say anymore because I haven't tried out my T-Bolt with a Leupold 3-15 VX-5HD scope. (A higher power scope comes in handy for seeing those tiny holes.)

Maybe a dumb question, but did you adjust your scope when moving from 17 gr to 20 gr Thanks for the video as I am new to 17 HMR. I currently have the same model Savage.

That 20 grain Hornady round looks like a winner. Sweet group, especially if you disregard that one shot you let the camera man take.

Over the past six months or so, the .17 HMR is one of the few ammos that our local gun store has had on the shelves, plus they did not raise the price from what was normal for the past several years. A couple weeks ago, I still was able to get a box of .17's for ~$10 (those were Winchesters 20 Gr 2375 fps). Thanks again and you take care. Happy New Year.

@@TheOldFatDadGoober I understand. Most of the ammo that exists up is high end hunting ammo, $35-50 a box of 20. There are no 9's, 380's, 40's, 45's, 357 Mags etc. If you happen to see a stray box it is outlandishly priced. I'll have to go back and see if they still have .17 HMR's. Stay safe.
Is it no longer true that there is like 2 manufacturers of 17hmr? All versions on the market are made in the same location by the same factory/manufacturer?
Thats what i have heard, there are 3 kinds of bullets and they are identical in all regards in my rifle - hornady, federal, cci..

Are these groups opening up because the initial shot groups had cold barrels?

@@bobcatforever3485 Loved your content Bobcat. All the shooters here in the UK are green with envy at your open and free gun laws. Although bizarrely, your government doesn't want you to have suppressors?? Here we are not allowed anything self loading apart from semi auto shotguns but suppressors are readily available for your bolt action rifle. They're kinda deemed a piece of safety equipment, hearing protection and keeping the noise pollution down too.
@@FeckArseIndustries Thanks. Our liberal government that is currently in control hates guns and gun owners. But our constitutions says, "we have the right to bear arms" which has kept this country free from its existence. No country would ever dare to invade the US with ground troops because there are millions upon millions of gun owner with high power guns like .223/5.56, .308 and .30-06 besides all the variations. For each of our gun purchases we do have to go thru a background check, but if you are not a criminal that is no problem. My last two purchases were a .44 Mag handgun and a .22 Mag rifle, I filled out the paperwork, gave the gun shop a copy of my Canceled Carry Permit (optional, but quicker approval) and Driver's license, paid the money and was on my way 30 minutes later. Not sure why suppressors are such a big deal here. You can get them, have to pay $200 for a Tax Stamp, once approved, can then buy the suppressor (fairly expensive). Too bad there are no rimfire cases ready to use for reload yourself, because commercial ammunition lacks accuracy.

In the background is what appears to be a house and just left of the targets is a truck and small structure. Was it safe shooting in that direction?
Mike, Thanks for viewing and commenting. The building you saw was a ~4' x 8' plastic shed that we store target frames, paper targets, tripods and other stuff we use in doing the shooting videos. The car there is my 2002 Jeep, probably about 20 feet from the targets. Still possibly a little too close to the shooting. Thanks again and take care.
Mike sorry, the bigger building you see in the background is a big two story barn that I spent many hours working in while growing up. There is a farm house about 30 yards or so to the left of the barn. You might see just the edge of it.

I have the same rifle and it is junk. You have to shoot a three round group make your adjustment and shoot again the next day. After three shots it is all over the place and it doesn’t matter what ammo. It is not my mounts and it is not my scope I have made sure of that. This is the most disappointing rifle I’ve ever owned
Al, I am not a particular great shoot, but have not experienced that much trouble. I have always enjoyed shooting my .17 HMR as compared to other guns at 100Y. I hope thing turn out better for you. Thanks again and take care.
@@bobcatforever3485 I am not the best shooter. But I have enough guns and I have shot thousands of rounds and I am better than average. But this is the worst rifle I have ever owned. After three shots the group gets wild the first three are almost always and a half inch group at 100 yards.It sucks because I am a left-handed shooter and had to special order it and now it just sits because I can’t stand to spray bullets all over a target
@@albosarge7282 That is terrible to have a gun that you ordered special and then nave it not perform as it should. Especially being a .17 HMR it should be a great shooter. I have a couple cheaper .22 LR that can spray the bullets around a bit, but that should not happen with a .17 HMR. When that happens, best go to a different gun that you can enjoy shooting. @@bobcatforever3485 I have a 30 year old marlin 22 or that shoots great still. I’d like to know how many squirrels and rabbits it’s taken over the years. Guns are like cars sometimes you get a lemon and sometimes you get a diamond. You just never know
@@albosarge7282 I can relate a bit, I also have an old Marlin .22 Bolt action. I expect mine is a bit older than yours, I got it as a kid in the mid 1950's. I had to re-blue it once, but it still runs great. Sounds like you have done some fine shooting over the years, the old Marlin must run well also. Nice talking with you, stay safe.

Grandp's i don't why you're doing a comparison of multiple manufacturers on the same sighting with a specific manufacturer. Each brand should be sighed to the gun. To critique multiple brands on a gun that's been sighted with a specific brand is stupidity.. Then throw in your moving shooting setup.. smdh

Hey there,i am trying to understand what the sense of a.17 caliber is....i dont see what it adds to the existing calibers...so please educate me on this one😉...thanks for any answers
Barry. Thanks. I appreciate your viewing and commenting. I will tell you what I think I know about where the .17 HMR fits into things. A friend of mine Jim had a groundhog problem in his backyard. He had been shooting them from about 50 yards with various .22 LR rounds but it seemed as if the .22's just bounced off of their tough skin. So, he picked up a .17 HMR and said that with one hit the groundhogs went down and stayed down. And that is all I know. But the .17's are also just fun to shoot. Thanks again and take care.
