17 HMR Ammo Test - 100 Yard Groups - Розваги
A caliber that I feel doesn't get enough love.
I shoot more .22 LR because its cheap, but I really enjoy shooting 17 HMR!
Absolutely love my 17HMR, I'd use it exclusively for Rabbits and Squirrels if it weren't so loud.
But for long range Rabbit control I wouldn't look elsewhere it's the perfect calibre! But inside 100 yards I'll use my 22LR to keep the noise down.
The .17WSM? Yeah
@@Hammerback0 I had 3 boxes of 50 of 17 WSM for quite a few years i bought by mistake when first getting my hmr. Then I couldn’t find a 17 wsm or any more bullets so i traded them in… BUT those rounds were MEAN. For rimfire only hunting situations that gun would be a mini .223. I guarantee you could smoke a deer with it.
@@LoveEncoded8videos on UA-cam of the WSM taking deer, pretty bad ass, you messed up should have just bought another gun in the 17WSM!
17hmr is a great little round. Super accurate.
My Savage 93r17 loves the Hornady 17gr V-max. I get about .6" 100 yard groups all day with them.
I tried lots of different rounds in my Anschutz 1727. It loves the CCI TNT and will consistently shoot half inch 4-shot groups at 100 yards. Five consecutive groups measured .35 .36 .65 .72 .56 CTC. Three of the groups could be covered with a dime. Hornady VMax are a close second. The 17HMR is very accurate but sensitive to the wind. The trick is to send the rounds down range as fast as possible before the wind changes. The Fortner actions lets me send the 4 rounds downrange before I take a second breath. I was shooting prone with a bipod and a rear leather bag. The only problem is that I cannot blame the rifle when I miss!!
I bought my youngest son a Savage 93R for his 10th birthday about 5 years ago. We love the thing. I most shoot Hornady 17 gr. V-Max out of it. We're getting about the same groups you got with the Hornady. As small as it is I have to say it's not bad for hunting either. Shot placement is everything even more because it's so small. About 3 years ago I took two goats trying to raid my feeders with headshots at about 80 yards. Really fun plinker.
I own a savage model 93R17 and it loves those Hornady 20gr XTPs same size groups you were getting at 100 yards. I also have taken down a huge wild boar with those same bullets. The 17HMR is a small but mighty cartridge.
I’ve got some of the ammo you shot for my 22mag. Still haven’t got to shot a 17 yet. Thanks again WTW for great videos with good information on every one of them. God bless you and yours bud 👍🇺🇸🙏🏻
Great video. CCI V-Max does really well out of all my 17hmr rifles. Love the caliber, and the guns are supper accurate. My Savage 93r17 BTVSS, is one of the most accurate. Enjoyed the video lots, keep em coming.
I have two CZs in .17HMR, and they only like the Hornady stuff. V-Max 17gr, more specifically. My results are very similar to what you got. Fairly consistent at about a half inch group.
Another great video! 👍🏻
This is about to be a really fun video!
I agree
I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm leaning toward the Hornady. I've had really impressive accuracy at closer ranges with that brand with the 17 grain bullets. I was only shooting at about 50 yards, but we were shooting the primers out of shotgun shells at that distance reliably. This caliber is enormous fun.
17hmr is my favorite for plinking/Target. I used a Savage 93R17 and got some very nice groups at 100 yards with Hornady 17VMax 17 gr. So much fun!
Great video. I've done testing with many makes of HMR ammo as well. I always found that Hornady 17 grain rounds were the best for my Savage rifle. Incredibly tight groups at 100 yards. I got to the point that I won't even buy CCI for 17 HMR. There always seemed to be random flyers.
I’ve used my .17 for prairie dog control for years on the farm and it does great. It’ll reach out to 150 yrds easily and have made shots at 200yrds.
I've taken groundhogs at up to 150 or 160 with my 17hmr. Such a nice round!
I've shot several thousand PDogs with mine. The trick is to be out at sunrise when the wind is dead calm. Once the wind gets strong the 200+ yard one-shot kills can be difficult.
What gun are you guys using and what bullet weight have given you the best accuracy?
@@paulshayter1113 I tried lots of different ammo in my Anschutz 1727. It loves the CCI TNT and will consistently shoot half inch 4-shot groups at 100 yards. Five consecutive groups measured .35 .36 .65 .72 .56 CTC. Three of the groups could be covered with a dime. Hornady VMax are a close second. The 17HMR is very accurate but very sensitive to the wind. The trick is to send the rounds down range as fast as possible before the wind changes. The Fortner actions lets me send the 4 rounds downrange before I take a second breath. I was shooting prone with a bipod and a rear leather bag. I also tested a Savage 93 17hmr. The groups weren't as tight and it preferred the Hornady VMax. I always plan my hunts so the wind is at my 6:00.
@@paulshayter1113 the rifle i use is a Savage 93r17 with a heavy fluted barrel. My rifle loves the Hornady 17 gr V-Max. My setup with the 17 gr V-max will consistently hold .65" groups. Wind definitely plays a factor. Its a fast round, but so light that the wind will move it quite easily.
My Savage loves the poly tips . Squirrels don't !
😆😆😆
I have a Marlin 17V also, picked mine up shortly after they came out with them years ago. happy to see you test with the same rifle as mine. I have knocked out pop cans at 200 yds with it and a 100 yd squirrel, it’s a keeper!
Awesome! I love it
Dude, it's so awesome watching your channel grow. Being a content creator myself
it's encouraging to see how quickly your channel is growing. I'd hope to see you helping
out some lower level creators over time.
I help people out every day. Literally. Because no one ever helped me and I know how it is. It honestly feels like it is growing slowly 😆. Been doing this for over 5 years now.
@@WHOTEEWHO I've been watching since around 300k. It seems like your rate of growth is pretty quick. I mean it will never be quickly enough if you factor in the time and effort going into each video. But from the outside looking in.... You're growing fast.
I wish my channel was even close to your growth. lol.
@@WHOTEEWHO Let me as you a question. Pls give me a honest answer. My channel is just below 2k in 8 months.
I think that's pretty good. But what is your thoughts on that number?
@@TherapyRange I'd say that is very good. Took me 18 months to hit 1,000 subs. Easier to message me on IG and FB
@@WHOTEEWHO Just liked the FB. page. Will share it with my followers. I'm honestly happy to even get to talk to you.
Most of the bigger YT'ers on here refuse to communicate with the lower level people.
Have a blessed day buddy.
You proved the one out that my Savage prefers! Good video Adam!
My rifle loves the Hornady 17gr v max. It does alright with the 20gr Hornady. That's the only 17 hmr I've found since I got mine last Winter.
Ole English Outfitters has some.
@@mattkissmyasstyrants8676 never heard of it. Guessing I'm a long ways from there.
I love the .17 HMR. I have a LH Savage 93R17. Federal V-Max does the best through it. My experience with the TNT is the same as yours. They don't print as tight, but they're fur-friendly and I prefer using them on furbearers from fox up to lynx. I rarely get an exit with them.
I bought a 17 Marlin when they first came out. I saw that round on the cover of American Rifleman and had to have it. I put a cheep scope on it, hey there’s no recoil, but it’s 4-32x50. If it’s not too windy, I can keep them in a dime at 50 yards and a quarter at 100. Fun little gun.
I Love My Savage 93 17 HMR, until watching WTW I did not know different brands would shoot different. So every time I went to a gun shop I would pick up a box. So now I have all kinds.
fully agree, best way of knowing which the rifle digests well
They have thier ways just like people...😎
Both of my Savage 93's in 17 hmr like Hornady . My Ruger only shoots CCI
@@chrisaerts6489 same results with my Savage, it prefers Hornady
I have a Mossberg bolt action in 17 HMR. It too is a fun gun to shoot. The best I have is a Thompson Center Contender in 17 HMR. That thing drives tacs. Really fun caliber.
Thanks for the video. Lead free Kommiefornia has the 15.5’s to contend with. I bought my nephew a left hand Savage 93 heavy barrel but we haven’t had an opportunity to do any shooting . I have two 17’s, largest in the 17 Rem and smallest in the 17Mach 2. My groups with the M2 look like yours and suspect a bedding issue where three go into a clover leaf then jumps and put two almost in the same hole.
This is a great round to fling at dollar store shaving cream.
Thanks for a great video. Nice and concise. I think 17hmr is one of the cheapest factory rounds that shoot accurately at 100 yards. Devastating on gophers.
Wow! My Savage 93R17 will shoot a one hole group at 50 yards with the 17 grain CCI TNT HP's...That Marlin seems to hate those rounds lol! I'd love to try those Hornady rounds...maybe someday I will be able to find some again.
I have a marlin 22mag bolt. I’ve had for 30 years. I love it. Killed a lot of critters with it. Great gun .
I am moving from a marlin 22mag to a new age cz457 17hmr, wow what a difference in quality.. None of that using 10/22 trigger spring crap lol
Great shooting WTW. Surprised me with those Winchester boo-lots. They don’t do well at all out of my marlin. Goes to show you, every rifle and rifleman is different indeed. Stay warm brother!🤘🏽👊🏽🇺🇸🤘🏽
17hmr I think a lot of the rifles like the 20g I've seen a lot of other videos on it and just about every 1 likes the 20g. I think ya should same test at 200 yards lol awesome video wtw like always. See ya on the next 1 brother. ✌
Great video!
I got similar results, thanks a lot for that !!!!
Great video have the 452 varmint in 17 hmr only around 300 rounds through it motivated to take it out again.
Awesome. Commenting before even watching. After epoxy bedding my A17 i went from 2-3 moa @100 yds to 1-1.5 moa 10 shot groups. 3 shot groups are 1/3-1/2 moa @ 100. Cci is #1, a17 #2, Remington #3, hornady #4 for my results. If you havent epoxy bedded, i highly recommend.
Back for another watch and wondering what the cost is for these. Walmart has 200 round boxes of a17 cci vmax for 69$. I paid 25 at a small store so im seeing 34¢-50¢ per round. Yikes
I use them all but never found the Norma stuff, my tikka loves them cci tnt and blows wallaby heads clean off 🧨
Another good vid mate thanks again 🥰
Outstanding shipmate. Press on. USS Kitty Hawk CV-63. Jan 1980 to July 1983.
Hey WTW can we get a clay block test comparing these to see the difference in damage at least between fmj and hp of the different grain weights I'm curious to see if they perform differently and by how much
Great idea!
I LOVE the .17HMR in my CZ455. This round is so much fun and accurate to the nth.
Very nice
Nice video. I tested 17HMR ammo and had very similar results. After I tried to weight the ammo that didn't group well and I found the weight varried a lot, so I sorted that typo of ammo by weight and groups tighten up. Just inconsisten manufacturing.
17HMR is a sweet little shooter!
Absolutely
My Savage 93 heavy barrel loves the V-Max. The TNT is devastating on squirrel and rabbit. Would like to try the Norma once it warms up here. Love that round.
I have the best 17 hmr groups with federal 17 grain polymer tip ,my worst groups by far are shooting CCI 17grainers . winchester and remington are both better than Hornady .
At the beginning of the video you asked, which one will be the best, i instantly said Hornady!! I have seen 9 out of 10 times Hornady come out on top in almost any brand gun, with 17 HMR. I got a Savage action that I built. Bushnell 16 power scope, free floating barrel, Walnut stock with Cherry wood fore tip, grip cap, and butt pad, and just polished the bolt. Dime size at 100 yards. Hornady for my gun!!
Interesting groups, good to see there's not much difference between the 17g and the 20g, be interesting to see a bullet drop video with the hornedy ammo, especially if you can get some 17g and compare the 20g
Amazing video !
My 17v loves the XTP as well that’s all I shoot !
Like watching your reviews and your chanel !! Nice shooting , nice review ! Grts Wim / Belgium
My Savage does very well with the Hornady and Winchester boo lots. Makes for an enjoyable day at the range or in the wild squirrel woods.
Missed this one, just happened to pop up while I was scrolling. My 17hmr is my favorite gun to shoot. I have the savage A17 and it loves the cci vmax the best. Always enjoy you videos, especially when you break out the 17. I recently bought a 17 mach 2 and am loving it so far.
How do you like the a17? Been contemplating buying one and not sure.
Been shooting a savage 93 for as long as I can remember haha
@@speedybeak I love my a17, it has been great with no issues and is so accurate it can make anyone look like an expert marksman. It will run any of the ammo except for the Winchester stuff
Thanks for the video! Gonna try some of that Hornady in my 17 see how it does.
Your Marlin shoots a lot better than My Savage 93BVSS I have a hard time holding anything sub MOA except Hornady .20 FMJ.
Im so jealous of your extensive.17 hmr selection. I only see hornady and cci and they’re all snatched up as soon as they hit the shelves at my local spots.
I know this videos a year old and I've watched it several times I love the 17hmr content the 22 magnum content and the 204 Ruger content can't get enough of the small fast bullets almost forgot about the 22 250 LOL
Love the 17HMR awesome Squirrel sniper.
Always awesome videos brother
The 17 is one of my favorite varmint rifle round I would like to see a video on you shooting the same target's with each different bullets
The wind messes with the 17hmr at 100 yards pretty good. Plus velocities have extreme spreads I'm most of the ammo. If you weigh the ammo and use your calipers to measure the rim thickness. Then sperate like rounds into groups then shoot them and watch the wind between shots you can Shrink all those groups down.
Hello good morning!
My marlin XT-17r shoots best with hornady 17gr VMAX but I can't get them at the moment so have been using the CCI VMAX 17gr it likes them to shoots a half inch group at 100 yard. Would love to see more videos with the 17hmr. Keep up the good work
I’ve been looking into getting a 17. After watching this video I’m getting one. Thanks whotee🇺🇸
Thanks for watching
My marlin really likes the hornady ballistic best. Dime groups at 100yrds and the cci game points shoot a little lower at a 100yrds just a hair bigger than a dime. And I do 5 shot groups. Thanks a bunch Brother. Stay Safe and GOD Bless 🙏🕊🇮🇱🇺🇲🦅
Sensational vid! Very interesting
I've used those cci game points in 22 mag on foxes they do a great job, dropped the last one in its tracks at 35 yards. I'm gonna buy a 17 hmr next I think I'll like it.
I’m in the process of getting a 17HMR, guy I’m buying it from threw 3 boxes in for the Pre-covid price of $14 a box. $25-$30 is normal now. I also started working at Walmart recently and had an employee notify me of .22WMR and .17HMR that were in stock for $14-$17 respectively. I got 300rds for my new rifle, like to think it was a nice score. Shame I can’t find 20gr XTP
hornady xtp and cci gamepoint are same bullet but small diffrerence in gunpowder to make it work in different gun.
@@Kesssuli I figured but from what I can tell the XTP seems to be more common on shelves than the CCI game points. However I’m having a hard time finding either. V-Max is everywhere though loaded by both
One of the best squirrel killin guns
I’m going squirrel hunting soon it’s been awhile since I’ve got a mess of squirrels. Be safe and GOD BLESS y’all Amen 🙏
Small but perfectly formed 🤣😄🤣
Nice shooting. Love my Savage B17.
Great 17 hmr video!
Thanks for watching!
I love my 17hmr, 17 hornet and 17 Remington! Who Tee Who!
Good shooting. I have a new Ruger American .17HMR that I haven't been able to shoot yet. I've been collecting ammo here and there and getting ready.
Same here... Ruger American 17hmr in Go Wild Camo.... itching to try her out. I have about 1300 rounds of various makes. Will report back.
Those were some good groups!
Thanks for watching Danny
Who would have guessed that the heaviest would do the best?
Awesome video sir
17 HMR is such a neat round I love my left handed tikka t1x in 17 HMR.
Maybeso v max my single Rossi liked them . They claim 200 yd but the wind better not blow.
I got the same rifle and the Hornady is all I shoot. It loves it.
One of my favorites.
The .17 is a tack driver. I shoot 1 inch groups at 200 yards with a bull barrel savage
Great video! Interesting caliber that I don't own a gun in, but maybe I should?
Mine loves the tnt's. Marlin here too, but it is the standard barrel. Into a dime at 100 in ideal conditions. Easily sub moa in adverse conditions. It doesn't like hornady at all, 2.5 - 3 inches at 100, yuk. Most cci seems to shoot ok, close to moa, but not really under from the ones I've tried. It really, really loves the tnt's, I was kinda shocked yours didn't. I have yet to try and 20 gainers, might try those game points or whatever it was that shot so well.
I was surprised when I did my ammo testing. My LH 93r17 ended up loving the Winchester 17grain
My friend (Yes, I do have one, *_ONE_* - lol 😉) has been measuring across 5/6 rounds, and he fires 6 because he says that 70% of the time everyone has a flyer, and he throws out the flyer and then measures every one of the 5 rounds to every other round so he ends up with like 10 measurements, then averages them together and comes out with a completely different winner than if he simply went with the smallest group edge of 5 (6 - minus the flyer).
I like that way of doing it because it shows which ammo has the most consistently tighter core grouping.
Love your video mate.
I am running a browning T bolt with the Winchester 17 grain ammo, but the side of the casing has been splitting. Did you have any troubles with yours?
I like the new cci a17 rounds they shoot and ground well plus are advertised to be 100 fps faster from the muzzle
If you can hooty....150 yards would be absolutely fandagumtastic...thanks man
I was shoot the Hornasy in my savage b-17 and hit the EXACT same hole twice! This caliber is Amazing. Awesome coyote gun
I had that Marlin, best I could get out of 7 different bullets was .625, I have the savage btvs and the best 5 shot group was .323 worst was .625 using 5 different bullets in the same group, shoots 1/2 moa all day without trying. It's minute of squirrel eye ball at 100yds crows at 200 off bags. Btw winchester bullets several boxes different lots was full of misfires. Winchester hmr is a no go....
Definitely want to see a squirrel hunting video.
Me too
Thanks for the review good info, can you try the same with 15.5 gr Winchester and Hornady 15.5 gr and CCI 16gr all lead free ?
Would like to see how they group.
Awesome video I wish Hornady offered that xtp in the .17wsm I love it outta my hmr
Can you please do a video on the .17 wsm
I need to
Well! The strange world of barrels and favourite ammo. My Anschutz shoots the CCI TNT 17g sub MOA .
I am fairly certain that the Hornady an CCI are manufactured by a joint venture of Hornady and CCI, and I believe they may also be responsible for the Federal as well, but I am not certain of the Winchester or the Norma ammo.
Liked the video fired a 17HMR about 10yrs. Ago thought it was cool then too
My 17hmr, shoots the hornady the best also. I can actually get just a slight smaller group than that. Heavy ball barrel on my marlin
Finally some 20 grain test. Would love to see some penetration test on the 20 grain. Just today some groups with 20gr soft point, hornady 20 gr and 17 v max 17 grain and got same results Hornady, v max and sp in that order. A17 savage. No one i know who shoots at fur uses 17 grain.
Love the Winchester in.22 so I will go with that
I picked the best one looks like! I always shoot the Hornadys out of my Marlin 917V! Absolutely a tack driver. My grandsons favorite rifle!
My CZ and marlin shoots the Hornady 20 gr better than any brand I’ve shot
The groups look bad until you take into account how small the hole is. My Ruger 77 seems to love all ammo, absolute tack driver
