After a recently successful merch drop, my gift for you all is this nice team building guide for competitive Pokemon (6v6 singles). With my powerful knowledge in your hands, you will be granted the fundamentals of building your own team for any given tier, and also the ability to pick any Pokemon you want and build a successful team around it. The things you learn in this guide can easily apply to any generation, whether it be Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Pokemon Sword and Shield, previous generations, or perhaps even the new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet games when they come out. I broke this video down into discussing how to go about building your own team, the basics of each type of playstyle you can base your team around (balanced, offense, and stall), how to EV your Pokemon including through the use of Chinese EV Spreads, and then finally how to take literally any Pokemon and use what was learned to build a team around it. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment, or just leave a comment regardless since the support is very much appreciated. Hope you all enjoy my team building guide and get encouraged to go build a team using your most favorite Pokemon! :)

Emvee is the Bob Ross of team building.
"And maybe we'll put a happy little Gliscor over here for defogging... and maybe in your painting, a Crawdaunt lives here for wall breaking... It's up to you, it's your team. Every day's a good day when you team build."
I love the giggles after he picks a mon and in his mind he goes through all the crazy chinese ev spreads but the only thing coming out of his mouth is a short giggle. amazing
Lmao so true. Also the giggle means he's thinking about the mon puttin in work and destroying people on the ladder probably LOL
Omg thanks MV I tried this and it worked immediately my magikarp just swept stormzone and took the throne from him at 2139 this is crazy! All it took was AV mamoswine, rocky helmet corv and umbreon 🥰
Jk emcee ure the goat and for QOTD it of course has to be the funny heat croco Fuecoco even the name is cool. Gen 9 has way better starters than gen 8 btw

I haven't seen many team building guides, but this is probably the best one I've seen. The one possible improvement I can think of is explaining how the way a team plays affects the decision making. For example, you can't really switch in on certain Pokemon, so what options do you give yourself in order to beat teams with those Pokemon? I think Tapu Lele is a good specific example, since it's likely to claim one of your mons almost every time it switches in, which means that you generally either need to prevent it from safely switching in or gain momentum with your free switch, both of which require the proper team options in order to do
I know that would be super in-depth though. I can't complain about we got; 2 hours of good info
Ayyy I'm happy you enjoyed it, means a lot :) yea i think that whole thing comes down to going through the list of commonly seen Pokemon and making sure you have a way to play around it when it comes time to the actual testing, and then tweaking the team based on what you find troublesome on the ladder. Since a team can't handle every single thing and your goal is to minimize the number of holes your team has, you'd see if there can be a way to pivot around certain threats your team has trouble against so it's not a guaranteed loss, or restructure the team accordingly to cover for it.
my team building video was better lol
@@GrowingDownUnderno it wasn’t
This is really useful, and it's pretty cool to recognise just how much watching your showdown videos teaches people about teambuilding as well
Thank You Master! Now my teams will be 2X Fire!
Better get some boots for that!
Seeing this very free flow take on team building has resparked a lot of my love for the game, and I've managed to get a pretty strong hyper offense Regirock team going, I'm having a ton of fun with it too since Regirock is one of my favorite Pokemon.
Legit, thanks for making this. I quit playing shortly after Sword and Shield launched feeling things had gotten stale and this is exactly what I needed to see!
QOTD: The grass cat. I hope that it evolves into a fast, physical attacker with a good HA such as Tough Claws. Fuecoco might be cool
if it isn't cursed with 20 base speed in its final form. I don't know what to make of the duck beyond it maybe becoming Water/Fighting type.
That aside, I appreciate the creation of such an in-depth guide on how you make your teams. I can't believe that 3 years went by so fast and that Gen 9 is coming out already. As I get older, I swear that time just goes by faster and faster. When I talk about Pokemon with younger kids playing it now, it's difficult to explain why the old games were better without sounding like a nostalgic Genwunner, lol.
Oh i completely feel you on that, I feel like time's going by incredibly fast, for some reason especially late 2019-present was played in x4 speed LOL
I feel like they are gonna be grass fighting water dark fire ghost
@@lawtonadams4235 I'll bet they will be Grass, Fire dragon, and Water flying
Been watching your videos for almost three years and this video has giving me the confidence to hop on showdown for the first time and build a team. Thanks Emvee for the years of great content!!
Ayyy i'm very happy to hear that! :)
Thanks emvee, now my unown weather hyper balanced team has reached #1 on every ladder ever! Not only that, but my wife and kids came back!
QOTD:I really cant decide until seeing final evos, but Quaxly is so far my favorite, fuecoco is close

What a great video! I didn't know the channel. I'm subscribing to it :)
Could you make a video about the competitive scene throughout the generations? At least since gen4?
I appreciate that very much! Really glad you enjoy it, and welcome to the channel! 😁 Will definitely do that at some point, I actually started competitive during generation 5 but i've dabbled a litte bit in gen 4 competitive before

I've never done this before but dammit I'm going to try it now.
I love using Torterra to stall!
Leech Seed, protect, curse and earthquake with Leftovers.
It's been 1 year since i watched this. Ig it's time to watch it again
Yep, I tried it, used a lvl 1 Ditto with Oran berry, and got Top 8 in two games
I'm late, but I have to say something I seriously did. I followed the chinese ev guide for bdsp ou and I ended up with this Kangaskhan set
Item: Custap berry (may change it in the future)
Ability: Inner Focus
Moveset: Work Up/Earthquake/Ice Beam/Fire Blast
Ev spread:
HP: 72
Atk: 148-
Def: 24
SpAtk: 216+
SpDef: 24
Spd: 24
So basically, this set:
- Outspeeds most defensive Heatran and ohko's at +1
- Ohko's Magnezone at +1
- Ohko's PhysDef Gliscor at +1
- Ohko's offensive Garchomp at +1 most of the time
- 2hko's SpDef Jirachi after Leftovers recovery at +1
- Easily 2hko's PhysDef Tangrowth at +1
- Survives banded Mach Punch from Infernape and ohko's back most of the time at +1
- Survives adamant (non banded) Mach Punch from Breloom and ohko's back (with Fire Blast at +1)
And those are just the ones I calculated. I think I'm going crazy lol. I'll definitely build a team around this. Thinking of pairing it with PhysDef Tangrowth to counter things it does not deal with such as Azu or Crawdaunt, and maybe pairing it with Blissey for faster powerful special attackers such as Latios
makes me proud to see an EV spread like this :)
very cool, but what does this do better than nidoking?
@@ogmechsftw The surprise factor. People will NOT expect a mixed Kangaskhan set and will switch into what they think is a counter (Gliscor, Tangrowth...) only to get demolished. Then, trying to revenge kill it after discovering it's actually a mixed set can be hard, knowing it has some survivality + the custap berry tech. Nidoking is not as bulky, has no custap and on top of that no one will ever stay in with Gliscor nor Tangrowth. Nidoking may be naturally stronger (and better on certain occasions), but nothing beats winning games with this kind of sets
@@adva1282 true, the lure sets are incredibly useful paired with mons that want the target mon gone.
Can confirm this works, I just made a team with flail magikarp and 6-0ed stall
Nice video
This helped me make a Clawitzer Rain Team in Gen 8. GEN 8 OU CLAWITZER BAYBEEEEE
2 hr vid on team building. This will be good.
yes my lord, please teach us the way of the heat
QOTD: Like last gen, I actually like all of the starters so far. I hope, unlike last gen, that they won't all turn into monotype grown men cosplaying as pokemon.
Oof, this aged badly
@@tandemtcg Well Skeledirge looks like a proper animal. And at the very least, they have interesting types so that's something
Merch just arrived and looks sweet! Ready to hear some fire team building tips.
QOTD: Mr. ducky boi. They all look great though.
YOOO glad you got it fam :) appreciate the support and hope this vid helps!
I subbed. I have some knowledge with sets and moves and evs and stuff. But very little battle experience. Breeding is tough this gen
I appreciate it very much! :) hopefully the breeding guides on other people's channels combined with the knowledge i can provide on various sets, teams and battling can help you conquer every opponent!
@@LordEmvee thank bro battles coming soon.
Bro this shit is what I've been waiting for, thank you so much ❤
emvee: making bulky offense
also emvee: speedy heatran baby!!!!
QOTD: Fuecoco, he's literally Feraligatr and Charizards child, and those two my fav mons, even if it's Evo looks bad, I'll just have a level 100 Fuecoco
DO NOT CALL FUECOCO A HE! AND WE DON'T USE THE WORD ITS AS A PRONOUN IF THERE'S AN APOSTROPHE IN IT!

A great video! I wish I could use this video to make a team for my favorite pokemon, but sadly no amount of teambuilding is going to let Regigigas ever do anything in a serious battle...

This content is amazing - I just Joined for the heat!
AYYY let's goooo! :) appreciate you adding more fuel to keep the heat going
I miss watching your team builds on the WBE, when is that coming back or something like it?!?!
I think if the timer gets fixed for gen 9 later this year i'm sure WBE will be starting up again :)
My Goldeen has all the current meta Zacian quaking :)
sarias song lofi hit different
QOTD: all the starters for gen 9 are fire but I'll definitely cop Quaxly. Huge fan of bird Pokemon, and considering Rowlet's evolution line went with glasses and a hoodie, I'm excited to see what happens with Quaxly and their hat
Grass starter it is. From the looks of it, it seems it's going to be a fast physical attacker which is what I'd absolutely love to have considering the success rillaboom got.
Fire starter looks good but I'm kinda sure it's going to be slow af but let's wait!
Water ducklett well not a fan but it's possibly going to be a balanced one. I really pray they don't kill it like they did to samurott/inteleon.
I'll never forgive GF for what they did with Samurott, esp since Dewott is my favorite water type. Of all the mons to show as quadrupedal, THAT was the one they picked. The samurai that apparently CAN stand on 2 legs because it's supposed to hold its shell swords in its hands. They even had a chance to improve it in PLA but basically just did a slight color change for the regional form. On top of that, it doesn't really stand out for anything in particular in competitive. It's not even terrible enough to be a joke, just mediocre and disappointing all around.
@@mr.sandman7339 I mean yeah that's certainly not as trash as beautifly but it's just confused (if offensive or defensive) and if offensive (physical or special) And yeh PLA could've easily bettered the design but no they just like add some spiky things and put a filter and bamm new form. That sucks tbh
Volt-turn has always been my fav strat in pokemon ever since it became a thing. Prob my favorite volt-turn lead is mienshao because it's kinda everything you want out of a volt-turn lead (even though it's not necessarily the best). The set I usually run is fake out, stone edge, u-turn, and high jump kick depending on the team usually with either life orb or sash. Sash is really nice on mienshao because if you take a bit of damage you can just u-turn out and then heal back to full that way sash is live again. Acrobatics + flying gem in place of stone edge (if you're a gen 5 simp like me) is also another great way to run mienshao if you're scared of other fighting types.
I also made a really funny volt-turn team a while ago where, like a madman, I ran a scarf u-turn volcarona w/ bug buzz, overheat and hurricane as a mid-late game sweeper that could also out speed other volcarona and all the other things it speed ties w/ (because there's a lot of pokemon w/ base 100 speed that also like to run speed boosting natures, also scarf puts it's speed high enough that it can pretty consistently out speed a lot of pokemon under tailwind) Took it to a local event and did really well with it. Didn't win that locals, but I did get top 4 so that's something.
Pro tip: If you build pure stall then I hate you.
YOU'RE THE GOAT
