I'm actually pretty stoked on this piece of kit and will be buying one for sure. Thanks for the great video as always!
really solid review! thanks so much for the in depth info especially with real world uses.
Isn"t this getting kind of out of hand? now you buy HDO2, Rapidfire, Powerplay, Antennas.
I would have never thought DJI would be price competitive while also bringing better performance
Same here, I’m about to buy some DJI goggles and start switching over. Over all these analog accessories/ modules that are “The best”
I absolutely love my power-play. The best purchase I’ve made in a while. I like having it in the back of my head with the top strap because I feel that it balances the goggles on my head.
Pretty neat little device, dude! Really nice! 😃
Great review!!!
If anyone is looking for new goggles, the Fatshark Scouts have this same 60FPS DVR built in. Same video quality, same interface, all built into the headset.
looks pretty slick. Can I use with the skyzone 03o goggle. Not worried about using it for the goggle battery replacement . Just want to see if I get a better recording with the 030s and it would be easier to use in a quad down situation where you have to find it. thanks. Also does it require antennas or it just takes a feed off the goggles.
Awesome review!!!!
What's the record quality like? Will it record from AHD sources?
We use IP based cams for streamed sports, many also have analog out, but no internal SD card, so this could be an option to iso-record sources for later use, especially for places where we leave the camera fixed due to access limits during events.
Bro.... this is cool! gotta add it to my list of accessories!
How is the file formatted? Do they video files report as 29.97 fps interlaced or 59.94 fps progressive? Resolution? Bitrate? Audio codec/channels/sample rate/bit depth?
money well spent thank you for this informative video lovin my powerplay especially for long range flights.
Is there a way to make this record in 30fps? I would love to use it to digitize old family VHS tapes. I also thin its missing a good quality Mic built in.. Would be nice to have good quality environment sounds.. Better then silent DVR videos.
this is great, right now I usually haul some EV800D's with me for spectators which don't have great reception or sun visibility.
My thoughts exactly! I find the Powerplay very useful, with the only drawbacks being battery life (extra batteries help) and the cables being a little... let's call them "budget"! 😉 Like you, I mount my Powerplay in the same spot at the Fatshark batteries usually go, without issues. Tried the battery-in-the-pocket thing, but never got used to it.
You don't have any problems with the interlacing? I get really bad pixel jumping when I watch it on my computer. On the 120hz screen it's Terrible. It kinda fix it self when I presses the file but it's still there. You noticed something like that?
Wouldnt adding a small receiver to it remove all the downsides without affecting any of the upsides?
What resolution and aspect ratio do you use on you IG DVR uploads?
I fly a lot of micros so I couldn’t order it fast enough, my wishes were similar to yours for the future aside from wanting a bigger slot in the holster to suit the wider band head straps but nothing I couldn’t live with in return for the functionality it serves.
Where do I get the green goggles! I have V3's and love that green!!
I've noticed quite a few guys now using the True D X module.... Has it vastly improved recently?
Is there a microphone mod for it, be nice to have sound option 👍🏻
Good info brother!
Awesome 👏 I like 60fps no matter SD HD or 4K
One thing i was wondering that you didn't cover is if you loose power for whatever reason and your recording do you loose the footage your recording , thanks bro great review 👍👍
I'd be happy with a standard DVR with a working time stamp. My ultimate would be one that I could add a receiver to so it only recorded when my quad is armed.
they need to switch to 18650's and add the step up regulator like furiousfpv did with their smart case v2. It makes a huge difference it battery life. i was wondering right away why your video is recorded in 60fps till i saw the dvr lol looks pretty sweet
can you also use it with the hdo 2?
I’ve been wonting to try a bit of long range but was always to scared due to the loosing my drone factor, and trying to find it through my hdo’s. This looks like the answer I’ve been looking for. Thanks for the great review 👍
Tony Tee add a beeper and a gps and you’ll be able to walk right to it without looking at any dvr.
GPS LUA Script (and a basic UBLOX module), and a self-powered beeper are your friends. I'd say proper RC link (CRSF) is next, then this.
Seems like it would be quite easy to mod it with a pigtail to use a large capacity 2s that you could keep in a pocket with the long wire.
It's a good start, but I rarely use mine because it has a pile of flaws I discovered:
- The deinterlacing method is very basic - it separates the fields and duplicates each line, resulting in footage that jumps up/down by a single pixel every other frame. Try watching some footage on UA-cam from it at 0.25 speed.
- It crops the edges and resizes that cropped frame back up to 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL), which then adds some artificial sharpening into the image, making bright edges round objects such as trees against the sky.
- It doesn't balance charge the cells when charging from USB, I once measured mine when charging and discovered one was at 4.35v and the other at 4.05v, so I immediately pulled the USB plug and only charge the cells with a 18650 charger+spacers.
- It doesn't charge the cells or output voltage for the goggles when a powered USB cable is connected and is turned on.
Sounds like a piece of junk
Hey there, i know it has been 11 Months, but i just got a Powerplay and you seem to know a lot. Is there any way to maybe stabilize the footage in Post so it doesn't skip around like you describe ?
@@NeverenCH Yes, there is, but it's a very hands-on process. It's not a perfect solution but I think it looks far better than the raw footage the PowerPLAY gives you. My latest video "Gimbal stabilised FPV RC car driving" was recorded with the unit and then post-processed.
I've actually been using my PowerPLAY exclusively for many months now since I created a new 3D printed back for the unit so it holds 18650 cells, it's on Thingiverse 4080213
The processing involves using the script based video filtering software AviSynth, and the GUI based filtering & encoding software VirtualDub.
I created a script which re-interlaces the PowerPLAY footage and then deinterlaces it 'properly' using the amazing deinterlacing AviSynth script called QTGMC. Then you load the avs script into VirtualDub, it sees it as a normal video file, which can be filtered further if necessary and then encoded into an avi file.
I sincerely wish someone had created a DVR that records the full interlaced resolution of NTSC & PAL sources, because deinterlaced would look better than what I can get from the PowerPLAY. My old Canopus ADVC-100 can record full resolution, but it requires a PC/laptop with a firewire port to do so, not exactly something you can stuff in your quad backpack with ease.
@@licensetodrive9930 Thanks a lot for your answer! So in essence i would have to write my own script for AviSynth and then proceed with the method you wrote ?
@@NeverenCH I've essentially written the main script, so now whenever I want to filter a new file I simply change the name of the PowerPLAY file within the script, then load it into VirtualDub.
Oddly AviSynth can't properly read the MOV files the PowerPLAY creates, but if I rename them to MP4 it has no issue.
I see that the OSD menu on this product is exactly the same as my Fatshark Scout goggles (it looks like the same firmware). The Scout DVR also records at 60fps, but the Scout records in MJPEG, and this product records in h264. This is actually a good thing, because I love my Scout DVR, and this product enables you to add it to whatever goggle you choose!
Hey Nurk... installed, will the goggles still fit in the fatshark case?
Anyone's aux receiver not work? Like you put it in all the way and the screen turns black?
Looks like a very good dvr. I'd prefer the 18650 li-on also. I do a lot of micro flying, this looks like a good option.
I've used dvr to find my lost whoop on my lawn.
Dose it work with over goggles or just fatsharks
I didn't have to cut the strap on my headstrap. I left it as is - so the base of the unit is on the inside strap and the DVR snaps in on top the outer strap (the strap is between the DVR and the base). IMO it just makes the unit snap into the case that much more snug.
I have this DVR and it is great. It records in 720 x 576 (if you are using a PAL camera) at 50 frames per second (60 with NTSC), while the FatShark DVR records 640 x 480 with only 25 (resp. 30 for NTSC) frames per second. I have put my ImmersionRC DVR on a separate ground station with an extra receiver and antenna. Of course this is some extra money, but you get better results than from the receiver in the goggles. I use the blue 18500 batteries that came with the DVR, but I don’t power anything else from the DVR. They seem to last a very long time if they only need to power the DVR.
Thats A Freekin GREAT Idea ! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
So You Connect Straight To The 7 Inch, Or 8 Inch, Or Whatever Monitor With FPV Antennas On That Correct ? And Record From Their, I Really Like This Idea...
@@1juswnahvfn : I don't use the receiver from a monitor. I use a separate receiver (like the Clearview) and a Pepperbox and that gives you really good results.
Have a bunch of 18650s for my fatsharks. Would consider this only if it used same battery. Even the new Xlite comes with extended handles to use 18650. Why not this??
Excatly !!!
Hey Nurk. What’s your final verdict on DJI FPV. I know you were blown away but you have not been using it during your long range flights or for racing. Is DJI just another fad in your opinion?
Thanks for the review, looks interesting, does it also playback GoPro footages?
Is does not
I do really like mine. I set my recording to auto which then encourages me to always turn on and off the goggles between flights. Something I'm not always as quick about without it. So only having the goggles on while flying has actually helped me extend the battery life while flying. Plus I don't have to worry about remembering to manage the DVR in the Fatsharks. So even though the battery is smaller, it lasts me just as long because I'm more conscious of making sure to turn the goggles off immediately after every flight.
For the down side, by far my biggest issue has been the goggles rebooting when I turn on the fan. It doesn't happen every time, but it does happen sometimes. I'm really scared to turn on the fan now while using these to power my goggles. I've been flying, had my goggles fogging. clicked the fan and had the goggles shut off. Luckily I was close enough that I was able to see the quad and line of sight it back home, but that could be disasterous. How many times have we been flying in a race and asked a spotter to click the fan for us while it's starting to fog? So far I would say I've had this happen about 10-20% of the time I click that button, I'm curious if others have had the issue as well...
Huh never had that happen with the fan
I Haven’t Had That Happen With My HDO’s Fan Either. If You Set To Manual Record You Can Also Do Almost The Same As Auto. I Set Mine In Manual, And Turn Off The DVR After Each Flight, I Use The 3 Foot Cord In My Vest Pocket, With Attached DVR, Love It That Way, NEVER Have To Mess With Taking Off My Headset... Happy Flights !
Really wish it had a voltage step up on it like Furious smart case V2. I was going to buy one till I heard it did not. I can't stand the fatsharks beeping when battery get a little low.
I'm right there with you Dan! I hate that fricking beep with a passion. Lol.
Can you power the FS goggles with a normal pack and just record using the ImmersionRC Powerplay?
yes
Loving your DRL story so far dude! I’m in the UK so it’s hard to watch. (Total off topic but ohh well) ✌🏻
Will this power my rapid fire?
My biggest problems with it are that the supplied batteries that come with it are trash, and just that the holster doesn't fit my big sexy 2" HotDogFPV goggle strap. Its designed for the original Fatshark goggle strap (or any typical 1" wide strap). I ran the long cable and just have it sitting in my cargo short pocket usually. I might have to try holster on the neck strap idea!
Got a 3D printer or know someone who has one? I designed a new clip for the PowerPLAY so it fits straps that are 1.5" and 2" wide. Search Thingiverse for thing number 3918015
licensetodrive Just Checked That Out, SWEET !!! Thanks For The Info ! Ive Bookmarked The Page Already, lol 😂 I Usually Have My DVR In My Vest Pocket With Extended Cable, But This Is EXCELLENT To Know !
I just wish they’d add the ability for it to automatically start recording whenever it receives a signal input from the VRx. That way you can use it as a stand-alone unit on the bench all day, connected to a vrx, it will record all your flights automatically whenever someone is on your channel. Just like the Furious FPV Dock-King does... that’s the only thing holding me back from buying it.
That's a great idea
That's exactly the question I was about to ask, sadly that it doesn't have this feature, would probably have bought it otherwise
Subbed Paul👍
I bought it .....as it'll mean I don't have to attach a 4k camera every time I want half decent video for testing kwads,or flying in new risky locations,e.g:non vital high quality filming.👍
So not to nitpick but you said these are for your fatshark goggles is it possible that they will work in Aomways or any other type of goggle as well maybe some box goggles that don't have DVR
It'll record any composite video signal so long as you have the right connector(s).
Yeah this assumes that your goggles output the analog signal
@@NURKFPV awesome sauce...thanks
That little thingy looks ultra handy
Can you charge your 18500's with the powerplay?
I believe so. There's a USB-C charging cable included
If You Mean, Can You Charge The Batts While The Power Play Is In Use, NO.... You Cant, I Tried Already. But Yes,You Can Charge The Batts While Their Installed Through The C Input Connection. I Hear Their Are Chargers That Have An “open” Circuit That Let You Use Your Whatever While In Use, And Charge At The Same Time, Time For Me To Start Looking, lol 😂 Hope I Helped...
The dvr looks truly amazing like it was dji HD almost
lol yeah on a screen the size of a poststamp maybe, lets zoom out..
Besides this is a obstacle free parcours almost.
My ncr’s don’t power my power play unless there’s on in there
Will 2000 mah work
I Watch DRL ALL The Time, Funny When You Had Vanny’s Mom’s Picture, lol 😂 I Just Received My Power Play Yesterday, So Far, Its Okay, The Worst Is The Freekin 18500, Batts, Should Of Been 18650, No Brainer, Right. IDid Upgrade To The 18500 2210, Better. I Also Have 2 Sets Of HDO’s, With Rapid Fire Modules, About 75 Different Antennas For Different Situations, And Am Waiting For My Month Old Pre Ordered HDO 2’s From GETFPV, Have You Tried Them Yet Nurk ? I’m Pretty Sure You Have, Thanks For This Sweet Review Also, Race On Bro !!! Happy Flights !
Yeah this seems really nice, but I will not purchase this without 18650 support. Kind of mind boggling that they decided to use a more obscure battery.
i like green 👍
Oh well - there's another $90 gone. 🤣
The only thing I do not like and that I recently learned is the unit should not be used to charge the batteries as it does NOT balance the two cells...
18650's would have been a way better idea. Much more popular, would have been nice. Great video though Nurk!
Is it just my Powerplay or does anyone else think its super dim and hard to see the screen in the daytime?
Shot! Now you have to update your profile pic 😂
Well I need a battery pack anyways and this will take care of that and people can watch me fly sounds like a good deal
Nice idea, but $90 + custom batter's. I'll wait until they bring the price down.
I DONT SEE A CONNECTION FOR THE FAN ? EYE TROUBLE I USE CAPS
There is a fan plug
I dig it but can't see past $35-$40. Hard pass at $90. Cool gadget though.
Why u're mad everytime xD
Thats a big power load on your face bro.
Great Product, but not 90$ great for me.
