- Today I dive into English mod revival/new wave band The Jam. "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" is the second single from their third album ALL MOD CONS released in October 1978. The tune reached No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart!
What Do Ya'll Think !?
Always have a copy of the lyrics when listening to The Jam. It is poetic genius.
Good English teachers have used the lyrics as just a poetry lesson
That line 'They took the keys, she'll think it's me' still gives me shivers to this day.
To catch them at their best you need to listen to them playing live. That’s where they excelled. The best live band ever.
Too true. Saw them at the Channel in Boston.
Thing number 4. Surely, the bass makes this song. It creates the drama. The tone. This song showcased Foxton's brilliant bass lines more than any Jam song up to this point in their catalogue. You have to have a strong bass to succeed as a 3 piece. Good to see Bruce still going strong today.
Personally, I think The Jam are one of the greatest English bands ever. The first single I ever bought was 'Eton Rifles'in 79 (when I was 10) and it's still so powerful today. The Jam were really a fusion of the melodic nature of 60s Mod (Small Faces, The Who etc.)and the energy/aggression of punk. I know The Jam never really had much major success across the pond (a bit like the Kinks - another quintessentially English band), but they were huge in the UK, often going straight in at number one in the charts which was exceptionally rare then. I highly recommend 'Going Underground' for more of this kind of post punk stuff (it's a stone cold classic), but songs like 'That's Entertainment' or 'English Rose' show a different side to them. Glad you enjoyed the Down in the Tube Station.
A song rescued from the bin. True! Unbelievable! The best song from the best album. ❤
A brilliant atmospheric song that totally encapsulates the time...the story...the tension. Brought together in poetic form through talented Paul, Bruce and Rick. And yeah...Bruce's bassline and sound. Fantastic.
Glad to hear you liked it.
The Jam were questionably the first "Brit-Pop" band...?? But it wasn't pop music, it was much deeper. I was well into them by the time Tube Station came out. I was already hooked by "In The City, "The Modern World", "All Around The World", etc. Tube Station came from the album, "All Mod Cons". I'm 58 years old now & haven't heard a better album.
The Jam were and still are my favourite band, its like a first love thing.
I think 'Tube station' was the Jam's coming of age song with a real maturing of Weller's writing. I was 18 when this came out and it still gives me goosebumps. The Jam were very English in their sound, influenced by the Beatles, Kinks, Who, Small Faces etc. Weller was also heavily into Motown and Soul and this was shown in the later Jam sound with songs like 'a town called malice'. The Style Council were his way of breaking out from the shackles of expectation he began to feel after the Jam became the biggest band in the UK. Excuse the long comment but I am a huge Jam fan and so grateful to have been in the right place at the right time to enjoy them while they were active.
And still the best band in the world ✌️
Heard this as a kid in the UK on radio just before release. No other song has ever had such an impact on my life. First time I'd heard them. Part of a long journey into music. To this day I still relate to the Mod attitude and aesthetic.
So many great songs. I'd say go for Eton Rifles next, but what do i know! You're bound to get a lot of suggestions and they will all be worth listening to.
I saw them live in Sheffield...the best gig I ever went to....
The Jam are a brilliant band, iconic british looks and sounds, you should check out more, they had loads of great singles, one of my favourites is 'That's Entertainment'.... another UK band from the same time is the 'Buzzcocks' - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've?), post punk indie pop :)
You said that "maybe Paul Weller moved on" ,no, he's one of the most influential uk artists.Saw him live last May in Antwerp and will see him at Edinburgh castle in July.Been a fan since The Jam except for the last style council stuff.PW is one of the greats, right up there with Lennon,Mcartney,The Stones etc. I listen to PW either sol or The Jam and SC every day!
What a tune, one of many by The Jam. Can I be probably the upmteenth person to suggest ' Town Called Malice'? ;)
Really like your analysis, Paula Weller and The Jam were such a high energy band at the time and very much reflecting late '70s Britain. I think what sets you apart in your reactions is you are such a fan of music. It pours out of you....! Keep up the good work
The Jam were a hugely popular band when I was at school (in the North of England). I can remember when Weller formed The Style Council, us boys really weren't sure about this new musical direction, but the cool girls who'd been into The Jam were fully onboard so our level of interest in The Style Council always increased in their company. Looking back now, they were right. They had the better taste. Too good a taste for us unfortunately.
The darkness of the lyrics is found in many Jam songs, and reflects Weller's politics and the grimness of 70's Britain.
polished punk .... saw the jam in 81 .... there was a riot .... agree with your points
“Town Called Malice”
Damn 78 makes you think
Thought about my wife and she’ll think it’s me !!! That line got me
"they took the keys and she'll think its me"to be precise..which is even more sinister..great track by my all time favourite band.
If you want to react to another song by The Jam, I strongly recommend "That's entertainment" although there are plenty of others worth listening to.
I was glad to see The Jam split up before they turned into The Style Council.
Working class poetry.
Tidy!
A Bopping little number about a hate crime.
Why didn't you listen to all of it??
The early stuff was very "Angry young man" MOD 'n' punk, the 80s was more"horns 'n' Harmony" Motown the 70s stuff was the stories of our youth, and the 80s was the Paul Weller dreamscape
yep I'm an early Jam snob😅
Guys. Could you listen to the song Myth by Beach House?
Why have you guys only got 9.5k followers. Something is wrong somewhere.
