Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Review - The Final Verdict

  • In spite of a lot of missteps and unforced, unnecessary errors, however, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are excellent outings. By eschewing a lot of the modern design sensibilities the series imbibes, and hewing so faithfully and closely to the fifteen year old game often regarded to be as one of the series' high points, they end up delivering an uncontroversial, safe, but incredibly fulfilling and compelling Pokemon adventure, the best one we've had in years.
Perhaps there is something to be said about what it means for the Pokemon games that their best game in almost a decade is essentially an almost totally faithful 1:1 port of a fifteen year old game, and that's definitely a discussion that needs to be and should be had. But this isn't a review of the Pokemon series, it's a review of just this one game.
And this one game, by choosing to be unambitious and sticking with what has been known to work, delivers undoubtedly one of the best outings Pokemon has had in years - warts and all. May it remind Game Freak and The Pokemon Company why players fell in love with this series to begin with.

    I completely disagree.
I believe ORAS and HG/SS are vastly superior remakes of their respective originals
BDSP are stubbornly faithful in all the wrong areas. And I disgree with Diamond and Pearl being good games. Platinum is the good game, and it outshines Diamond in Pearl in pretty much every aspect.
So WHY... WHY could you not take Platinum as a base for the remakes, but slap the Diamond and Pearl story onto it?
So many things in this (the clunky to use Pokétch, item distribution (mainly certain evolution items that prevent awesome Pokémon from being used in the main game), Trainers' Pokémon, et cetera) are unnecessarily bad, because they were bad in the originals and the refused to go with Platinum regarding these instead. Also, mandatory catching tutorial is back, though we had just managed to get rid of that in SW/SD.
Yeah, the new Underground is fun, Pokémon following after you is awesome, and the soundtrack is nice, but there just isn't much innovation in these games that justify their existence. HG/SS and ORAS have amazing features that make it worth playing them over the originals. With these, you're just playing a slightly more shiny version of the originals... and again... the originals were actually kinda bad, if you think about it.

100%. I actually felt insulted. There was absolutely nothing for old players. They removed small yet endearing features like the clothing change in the contests, the base decorating system and all the fun that went with it… OR/AS had a sprinkle of new story that bloomed with the delta story at the end. I was blown away by that and said, entirely worth it.
But everything you said and more just left this game so poorly executed and was so disheartening that I legit have no heart to finish the game knowing that there’s nothing new to discover.
I hope Legends is the first of a new line because it offers such a new experience to old games. So much lore can be explored. If it’s just a one off- I’m afraid that diamond will have been the last of my adventures…

The only thing I disagree with is the challenging difficulty of trainers, all trainers early to mid game are way too easy and pose no challenge. Another thing is the point you brought up about the poffin game not being touch screen, I believe this wouldn’t make sense because of all the people who play this game docked to a TV.

So why implement touch screen for anything I believe is what he’s saying? The poffin cooking should definitely be touchscreen, based on the fact that the poketch is and opening the badge case utilizes it. It doesn’t make sense that those would be and that wouldn’t. It doesn’t really matter how many people play it docked. (I exclusively play it on my TV), but I’m sure there are lots of people that have Switch Lite or like to play it in handheld that would take advantage of the poffin cooking having touch screen prompts. And you’re right, the early game is laughably easy.

Instead they are just content with making the games dreadfully easy to cater to the most inept of children with a forced exp share system so they don’t have to actually check in see if the game will function without it. 6/10 for me atm although i just reached Veilstone City.
I personally don't like N-switch's design with the joysticks (terrible for walking straight in pokemon) and the asymmetrical and excessive buttons. (why do i have to push the miniature + buttton to select my registered (key-items) or confirm a nickname?), why is there no interaction with the touch screen?
Personally the Chibi-style isn't my thing but it's the designer's choice so it's fine.
I also share a lot of the opinions in this video about the limited roster due to available (viable) pokemon, how many of us started our journey with
starter mon-Shinx-Starly once again? Only to leave fun pokemon like Kricketot , Croagunk or Cherubi by the side of the road?
I like the fact that this game stays true to the original, but as stated in the video, expanding on the existing content would have been even better. +
I like to compare it with ORAS which for me was a solid 9/10. The new Contest system is ridiculously boring and im bummed that the Veilstone City game corner is not in the game. Talk about a dissapointment.
The only positive i've found in the new game so far is the expansion on the underground tunnel network which is also mentioned in the video although that is simultaniously negated by the fact that there's no interaction with our secret base apart from putting a statue inside of it.
To summarize: I think this had a lot of potential, people had been looking forward to a DP remake for YEARS and being one of those people i have to say im pretty dissapointed.
Thanks for reading my essay. :p

Holy friggin frigs encounter rates, Batman! I was almost overleveled for the Elite Four before I even got to the third gym! Yeah, maybe I'm exaggerating, but not by much. I only did trainer battles and was well 10 levels or more above most mons in region and still proc'd wild encounters almost every 3-5 steps. No grinding necessary in this version. The game itself is the grind. If you don't run from half of your battles, you'll become stupidly overleveled and OP. I didn't like it.

In general there are flawed remakes, while there bring some of the nice stuff from the originals other parts didn´t aged well or even made it worse for the purpose of being faifhtful.
One example is the Pokewatch, in the originals it was a neat idea because on the Nintendo DS you had two screens, one of them being a touch screen where you can rotate apps with the stylus while also walking or talking with an NPC at the same time. But here is annoying to navegate the Pokewatch because the game is ported on to the Switch, a entirelly different console with only one touch screen that most players would rather not touch directly of fear for damage it in the long run. Not only that but is hard to tell which things can be touched and which not, as you said why you cannot use the screen for Puffin cooking?

Few patches here and there but triple aaa games or companies they make their games in gigabytes. Pc, Xbox, and playstation eats up a ton of hard drives vs Nintendo still on memory cards. They prefer to release it now get a ton of money and may fix it later. Would they change heck no since they can still sell games. This is like their gta online problem back then.

Today, I bred a Rotom-W and wanted to teach it pain split, when I realized that there actually is no way of teaching pain split to rotom in this game. A lot of Gen-4-OverUsed-pokemon will not have a real purpose in the BDSP meta game because of that and for me, that is just a really frustrating experience. :(

I don't understand why people love gen 4 aside from the final champion battle. The story is not great let's be honest. The rival is fine, but the story is boring and the final battle with the boss happened way too early. Why was I able to catch the box legendary before the elite four? I love the fact that Cynthia can be tough to beat off the bat. I love the elite four being pretty tough to beat. However the actual game and limited mons just weren't fun. I love love love the difficulty of the champion battle though and I want to see more of that in future titles. This is only an opinion and I have enjoyed myself playing the game.

    • @atticusstephenson2895

I think people loved that there was over 400 pokemon to catch in gen 4 and there was new mechanics to catch specific pokemon like honey in the trees, or the underground. Outside of that there was a good amount of legends that were event locked but the Action Replay was new and gave access to them without. So for me being in middle school, it was a lot of fun to spend hours looking up codes with my brother seeing what new pokemon we were about to face, hoping we wouldnt get a dirty egg that would crash our game lol. I found out about Darkrai, Shaymin, Giratina, Cresselia, Arceus exclusively from having an AR. And it was pretty cool to be able to get regigigas if you transfered over your other regis from ruby. Outside of all that, not sure what your beef is with being able to catch the box legendaries before the elite 4. Thats like always been the case lol. I had lugia in gen 2, kyogre in the elite 4 hall of fame in gen 3, dialga in gen 4, reshiram in gen 5. And I never beat Y, and never played sun and moon.

    • @smj3productions

@@atticusstephenson2895 My beef with catching a legendary before the elite Four is just that. I don't think we should be able to catch one until after. I understand that in most games legendaries are obtainable before the elite four. That's something I dislike and I wrongfully attributed that to this gen. I'm very wrong for using that in my criticism. The different catching mechanics are interesting however limiting it to 6 hour intervals is so inconvenient. My first playthrough was severlt limited by such a mechanic. Sadly that persists throughout pokemon and I get that. It felt like this generation was a but more penalizing however. I have to check trees every certain amount of hours to get one member on my team and if I can't get it then I have to suspend my progress that much more to get that one pokemon. That is not fun or challenging. Like I said I love the high difficulty but with high difficulty I'd like a little consideration into how much time is plausibly put into it. I don't mind spending an hour or two to get a decent nature. Waiting 6 hours just for a possibility to even catch that mon is just too much.i like the idea of checking specific trees speraticly throughout the region for one mon but the time limit is just not fun. I don't want easy mode but I don't want to have to time my life over trying to catch one pokemon. I rarely even get to use my favorite mons because they're locked behind trades, let alone time exclusive mons. It's just not fun. I understand the excitement but why not just hunt for a shiny in that case? I wasn't trying to be harsh and I appreciate your own criticism of my comment. I still do believe the story isnt great and the post game really doesn't have any story. It's cool to catch legendaries and while these games have a limited pool I do appreciate the way they're handled. It's not just going into a cave and hoping for one of however many. But I mean there really isn't much to the post game. But thst isn't a unique criticism. That goes for all pokemon games. I do however remember a lot of people praising this post game, which I didn't really understand.
I still am playing the game and spending a load of time underground. I still feel I got my money's worth with this title. I do not regret my decision to play it.

lol no. 1st through 3rd gen is objectively "pokemon at its peak". Gen 4 is cool and all, but each game becomes proggresively easier to the point that 2 year olds can breeze through it, less attention to detail, inferior pokemon design, and over mediocrity and pointless dumbing down or removal of useful features for useless ones. Games like FireRed, HeartGold/SS, and Omega Ruby/AS just shit on Gen 7 and 8 so bad it isn't even funny, and still beat out the decent yet frankly a tad lacking Gen 4, 5, and 6. Note that i'm not screaming Red/Blue/Yellow + Gold/Silver/Crystal supremacy, not a "Genwunner", just know quality RPG games when I see them considering i've played well over 200 of them over 30 years.
(Although to be fair there IS something to be said about the INSANE feeling of mystery and the quaint 16 bit-ness of games like Crystal or Emerald that just OOZE the fact that these games were jam-packed with love and attention to detail the likes of which even the remakes tend to lose in the name of graphics and accessability.)

  • @cyberdrache8416
    @cyberdrache8416 Рік тому +1

In my opinion BDSP are the worst remakes of all time. Here are some reasons why:
    1. Faithfulness: Unlike other remakes, this game literally copy & pastes 90% of the game from diamond/pearl. Diamond/Pearl are games from 2006. You cannot copy almost everything from a game that more than 15 years old. (Remember this is a remake not a remaster!). Almost everything is copied: All dialogs, the storyline, the chibi art style, the national dex, old pokemon encounters and even the Poketch were copy & pasted to this game. Pokemon games have been improved in the past years and had many quality of life changes like 3D art style, overworld Pokemon encounters and reusable TMs. None of these changes were adapted to the game which is just sad. This game is too faithful and faithful sounds more like a excuse for lazyness.
    2. Not-Platinum-Based: So they copy & pasted 90% from the old Sinnoh game but not based on Platinum? Diamond & Pearl had several weaknesses and Platinum fixed many of them and included many Quality of Life changes. Here are some Platinum improvements over Diamond/Pearl: It extends the storyline with additional content, new dialogs, new characters like Charon and a new map Distortion world (loved it). The rival was a bit too weak in Diamond/Pearl which was fixed in Plat. The Poketch has a reverse Button. It has the battle frontier. And finally: the Sinnoh dex which was baaad in Dia/Pearl was fixed. The bad sinnoh dex in dia/pearl has only very few Fire Pokemon (very weird). Gym leaders were forced to use weird mons in the main game like Electric gym leader using Octillery or IceType gym leader using Medicham (WTF? Despite Sinnoh having enough Ice/Electric mons) and also many sinnoh mons were restricted to the postgame. Thats means many of the favourite sinnoh mons cannot be used in your team for the main story. But Platinum fixed this issue and created a NEW sinnoh dex which fixed all these issues which made the main story like a sinnoh game. ALL of these great changes of Platinum where NOT included in BDSP. This means BDSP uses the OLD sinnoh dex, OLD dialogs, OLD storyline, NO new character like Charon, NO distortion world and NO battle frontier. That makes BDSP a worse Sinnoh remake than Platinum which was released in 2008. (Imagine a 2008 DS game of the same Region beats you in ALL aspects. WTF)
    3. EXP-Share & Friendship-System: One of the most hated features is the EXP-Share system which often leads to WAY more exp than in the past games. In my opinion, the EXP-Share is not too bad. BUT diamond/pearl were not designed to be played with the new EXP-Share system. So if you include an EXP-Share system, you have to increase all levels of the pokemon (from opponent). But they didnt which makes the difficulty of this game too easy.Basically, my whole team was too oveleveled. And the friendship-system is the worst luck-based system i ever saw. A feature that increases the Critical hit-chance,removes paralysis, lets me dodge 100% accurate moves and even lets me survive moves with 1HP. WTF did you smoke gamefreak? And the worst is that, you cannot make any of these optional. Because of that many players who love to do a nuzzlock in Sinnoh, prefer the old DS games.
    3. No Innovation: This game not only copy & pastes the majority of its content, it adds nothing new to the game. Lets review some good remakes: HeartGold/SoulSilver (HG/SS) were Gen 2 remakes and included some storyline from Crystal and added many new stuff like the pokeathlon, battle frontier (from sinnoh), gen 1 map/storyline, a complete national dex and the pokewalker. HG/SS were not copy & pasted, but actually remade the game and added good new stuff. Also Alpha ruby&omega saphire (ORAS) have new changes like new art-style , new designs for Team magma/aqua, new Mega-forms, new Primal forms, changes to dialogs and storyline and the complete national dex. BDSP on the other hand does not provide any kind of major change in the game which makes this game really boring. It does have a new Underground which has overworld pokemon, but that is nothing special for 2022 and the ramanas park was neat but nothing too exciting.
    4. Underground/Super-Contest: The old underground allowed to create your own living room with furnitures and set traps to troll friends online. Both were removed for a statue system which is really boring. Collecting statues and the effects of the statues are really disapointing. The Super-Contest used to be a fun-mode where you had many different options and varities and had to have good reflexes to do
the correct moves at the correct time. Now all you have to do is Press A at the correct time and use 1 attack. That makes this mode so boring and disapointing. I mean, was it really that hard to let the player press like 4 different buttons instead of just 'A'??
    5. Art-Style: Many of us expected a modern review of Sinnoh in a 3D human like Art-style. But they decided to go for the Chibi-Art-Style. Everyone has different tastes but in my opinion the Chibi-Art-Style ruins many serious moments of the story line of this game, especially vs team galactic. It feels like all the emotions of the characters were removed. The reason why it was used in Diamond/Pearl was because of the limited hardware. In my opinion the Chibi-Art-Style waas the wrong decision and does not suit a switch game at all.
    6. Only Gen 4: BDSP has a national dex which includes the pokemon from Gen 1-4 which is basically the same as Diamond/Pearl. As a player who would have loved to see at least some Pokemon from Gen 5-8 in Sinnoh, i am very disappointed. At least some Pokemon post Gen4, or some new forms or at least add Sylveon in this game. Not even mega-forms were included in this game. The fact that 95% of the megas are from Gen1-4 and the underground being the perfect place to grind the mega-stones, makes this decision even more disapointing. The reason why diamond/pearl was limited to Gen 1-4 was because there werent any other new pokemon. The reason why BDSP limited the game to Gen 1-4 is because of lazyness..
    7. PVP: On of the worst things in this game is everything arround PVP. The worst disrespect a main series pokemon game can get, is when GameFreak calls that all the competitive tournaments including the world championship will not take place in BDSP (WTF?). Unlike Sword/Shield, you have no option to search for PVP matches which makes it way harder to find battles. But the worst thing is the grind for a PvP team: TMs are not reusable (WHY?!). For some important TMs like Earthquake, you have to grind for 80BP (WTF. Thats a lot of Grind). Also you cannot catch pokemon with hidden abilities except those from poke radar. To get the hidden ability you have to grind for the ability patch for 200BP (WTF. Grind competitive to create a competitive. Nice system). By putting important PVP items behind such ridiculously high grind walls, it makes creating a PVP team disgusting.
    8. Events: The events were also copy & pasted from Diamond/Pearl. Same Shaymin event, same Darkrai event. And other events are only accesible if you bought other main series pokemon game (Why..). And finally some garbage "events" which include some useless statues. Meanwhile, the 3 year old SW/SH getting better and innovative events like new PVP cups/tournaments and some legendary shinies. In my opinion the events in BDSP are disapointing.
    9. Bugs/Glitches: Holy Moly! This game had so many bugs and glitches! You dont even need hacks, when the game itself has to many glitches. Many of them where completely broken. Many Pokemon clone glitches and item dupe glitches ruined the game. You could even get infinity money, create your own shinies (WTF), make your pokemon 6IV and let any Pokemon learn any move. I used to be in a discord for trading in BDSP and because of the glitches, the trade market was only about getting shiny 6IVs etc. Not to forget to mention the soft locks which made you restart the whole game which can happen for example in the ice gym. Usually every games has a few bugs. But this one had too many and too many game breaking glitches. A very hyped game like this shouldnt be developed by a 3rd party company.. But Gamefreak had other plans..
    10. Controls: The controls of this game feel weird and uncomfortable. Characters move in a grid which looks so weird during the storyline. The pokemon who follow me often block me in a bad way. The underground has many inivisible walls which makes moving in some rooms horrible. And finally the control with the cycle are the worst. The cycle in pokemon games are a beloved feature but in this game.. It feels so uncomfortable moving with the cycle, I sometimes even prefer walking.
    11. The original Game dia/pearl and also Platinum was sold for like 40$. Meanwhile the clearly inferior game BDSP was sold for 60$. And now if you think about it: That 90% of the game was purely copy & pasted and has plenty of weaknesses and bugs, you realize that BDSP is just a cow getting melked -> Its clearly a rip-off!
    12. Conclusion: It feels like GameFreak didnt want to do a Sinnoh remake but wanted to milk some money by releasing the highly demanded Sinnoh remake. The fact that, they hired a 3rd party company who never developed a major game, only supports this theory. Not forget to mention that, BDSP had a giant day one patch which was essential to enjoy the game. The fact that they released Legends Arceus almost 1-2 months after BDSP release also supports the theory, that they didnt care at all for this remake. Because of the release of Legends Arceus, the hiring of ILCA, the amount of glitches, the boring events, the exclusion of VGC, the 0 Innovation in this game and the fact that the majority of the game is copy & paste of a 2006 game (Dia/Pearl) which is worse than a 2008 Game (Platinum), makes this game the worst remake of all time in my opinion.

As a former kid that fondly remembers playing Red on my game boy with the plug in light because it did not have a backlight then, I will never understand anyone complaining about EXP share. Anyone complaining about EXP share is not going to have a challenge with the game to begin with, and just wants to act like it's making the game easy. If you actually want to make the game a challenge just use 3 Pokémon instead of 6.

I played the originals back in the day (Although my favorites are the G, S, and C versions) and I hate the exp sharing. They could've made it optional for both tastes.

They are complaining because the essence of actually training a virtual pet is gone. It used to be hard and grindy and had that sense of accomplishment and bragging rights that the new Era of pokemon don't have. I stopped playing the games after emerald because the game went to a direction that it feels different. Or maybe I just out grown pokemon. I do still watch reviews just to see if they would make an amazing changes but I can see pokemon had changed to a little bit of digimon.

@@antoniosupan272 Same here. I wanted to dust off my Switch and play a Pokemon game again, but this EXP share makes no sense to me. The games were already extremely easy, but now they remove the only thing that was fun to me - actually training my fav pokemon. Splitting games into two identical roms in 2021 is also insane. I guess I'll wait till I can get Shin Megami Tensei 5 for cheap.

@@Noobirus to be honest I buy tons of games that I don't even play. I have a switch not a single game was played. There are just too many games but not too many time to play and also the drive to play. To be honest I spend more time playing with my psp with custom firmware which I can do with switch but the psp fits in my pocket and I can easily find a USB port to keep it running and even in planes it runs. It can be a flash drive, music, movie and game carrier. Which phone, vita and switch can do as well but it's just smaller and much convenient. Ps1, snes, famcom, arcade, psp, Nintendo 64 and Gameboy games in my psp it keeps me busy already playing all the classic games during travels.

I just want to experience new titles, finish them and let go. The only game on Steam I have 100+h in is Grim Dawn, bc I sometimes play it to switch my brain off and relax.

Anyone who never played the original Gen 4 and decides to play this instead is just doing themselves a disservice. This looks so bland. At least if you play the originals, the character and pokemon designs, the graphics, everything goes together and everything is "of it's time" - you're experiences Pokemon in it's pure form as it was in 2006. You're traveling back in time and experiencing history, what it was like to play it back then. This remake just looks like... nothing. Not upgraded to modern 3D visuals, and not capturing the nostalgic 2006 charm of the originals.
If you never played Gen 4, go play the originals, not this

Unpopular opinion, but these games looks way worse than the originals. I would have preferred they just ported the original diamond and Pearl games to the switch. The 3D chibi models are so bad. It’s honestly a disgrace at how the pokemon company think they can keep putting out these mediocre games for the fans that want to see some real improvement
