Truth be told, Chimchar is the only starter in gen 4 I'd ever pick (not that the others are bad by any means). Apart from Infernape being my favorite, it's so strong in the playthrough and I've got so much nostalgia from the original gen 4 games...happy times once Monferno reaches lvl 36 :D

Here are the Top 5 Pokemon some I use in my SP run:
    - Crobat: easy to find and you can have a Golbat when you arrive in Eterna
    - Magnezone: Underground you can find Magnemite before 2nd Gym, and due to Mount Coronet you can get a Magnezone at lvl 31 around the time for the Water Gym.
    - Gastrodon: If you need a good tank with good coverage this is one of the better choices and also easy to find both in the overworld and underground
    - Scizor: (Diamond exclusive) You can find Scyther in the Underground before 2nd Gym, Metalcoat you can get from Bronzor around the Cycle Path and Mt Coronet.
    - (Pearl exclusive) Misdreavus/Mismagius: You can find them Underground, getting the Dusk stone is more difficult compared to the rest of my list but having a decent movepool and base stat total of 435 makes them equal to most midtier Pokemon until you evolve.

I'd like to comment as well as throw in some well deserved honorable mentions.
First, thanks to the grand underground we have access to alot of pokemon which were otherwise hard to come by. For example as you said with toxicroak being in the marsh, he can be found in the underground as early as veil stone when obtaining the gear. Gible can also be found in a hidden cave under the cycling path as early as the sixth badge having strength. Will it be rough to catch up a pokemon level 15 with your team, yes. Worth it, also yes. Dont believe me, ask cynthia.
While I do agree with most of these, I still feel some pokemon deserve mentions.
Empoleon. Its steel typing makes it valuable with the inclusion of the fairy typing. While there is many other steel types, this one resists fire and can counter ground and fighting types making it only really weak to electric. It's only drawback is you'll have bubble beam and or brine for awhile.
Gliscor. While it is rare and you come across it quite late unless your lucky in the swamp areas in the underground, its essentially the landorus of this gen. Flying and ground is 2 immunities and with access to earthquake on level up now and reintroducing roost, why wouldn't you use it? Plus hidden ability toxic heal makes it a wall, especially to garchomp
Gardevoir. I'm a little annoyed you went with clefable over it despite it being good competitively, in game gardevoirs fairy typing makes it a monster. Coupled with its psychic typing, it reduces alot of threats, and team galactic...pfft, not a chance.
The last one id like to mention is Honchcrow. Its typing is great, though not as tanky as mandibuzz, more of a glass cannon, anyway, this guy hits hard. I didn't hesitate when I found my first dusk stone in the underground to evolve mine and its carried me. I caught a few murkrow early on and bred them with the moves I wanted(bravebird, haze) and hes been very reliable in my first playthrough. Also dark is my favorite typing so, gotta stick to it.

Aside from that, the only thing I feel a need to mention is that Froslass (which I love and plan to use) can’t be obtained until quite late, you catch its pre-evolution around the 7th gym. And if my memory serves is correct, in the original games the item that you need for Magmortar was post-game, but it may be easier to get now. I also don’t like Empoleon, but that’s a personal thing with a whole backstory. Objectively it’s a very good mon. Overall, I think it’s a great team with a lot of cool mons.

I'm having a tough call between using Manaphy or Gyarados for my Shining Pearl playthrough. Gyarados gets Dragon Dance, and the Speed boost can be very useful, but Manaphy gets Tail Glow (which is once again usable in BDSP). Tail Glow is apparently known from the start, so Manaphy will be able to sweep as soon as its level catches up to the rest of the team. The only downside is that Manaphy can't boost its Speed like Gyarados can, although Tail Glow's dramatic SpA boost (and Manaphy's natural bulk) should make up for this.
I've already decided to start with Chimchar, mainly because I did plan to use Manaphy for my Water-type, but Gyarados also seems to have its merits just because Dragon Dance is so good. I'll probably go with Manaphy just because the Manaphy Egg is a time-limited event, so if I were to ever restart my save, I wouldn't get this opportunity. My only concern is having such a powerful Pokémon so early on, but I could also argue that Gyarados is pretty powerful even with its level only in the early 20s (it learns Waterfall at Lv. 21).
I also want to use a pseudo-legendary for my SP team, and I'm a little divided on whether to use Garchomp or Salamence here. That said, I think the decision is easy: Gabite is pretty useful even in its middle-stage, whereas Shelgon is lackluster until it evolves into Salamence at Lv. 50. Technically, Shelgon has a higher Attack stat (base 95) and a good Defense stat (base 100), but it only has base 50 Speed. Gabite, on the other hand, has base 82 Speed (which is good enough), base 90 Attack, and most importantly, dual Dragon/Ground STAB. Unfortunately, the level at which the Gible line learns Dig and Dragon Claw has increased considerably since the original DPPt, although if the Earthquake TM can be taught soon after obtaining Gible, things might be okay.

In Pokemmo, my first shiny was bibarel secret shiny. With pure luck at like second route. Luckily I had PokeBalls from other regions so I could actually catch it. I still have it and I named it shiny bober.

Forgot about the grand underground? A lot of these are easily accessible way earlier than in original D&P. Some good choices here nonetheless 👌🏽

They need to give a option to turn off the shared exp~ I get it, but it also makes you blast through levels way quicker and I liked having to grind a little in order to be of level for the next gym🙃 Give me my shared exp+ lucky egg and let me grind

As a older fan who does not have the same time to grind. I really appreciate the share XP system. I dont know if they still do this but i hope it lets people turn it on and off.

I'm trying a different team this time around. I always used Torterra as my starter, sometimes Empoleon. So my team for BD is gonna be Infernape, Raichu, Staraptor (I normally used murkrow), Quagsire, Gardevoir, and Magnezone

Thank you so much for these recommendations. I just won a bid for a like new copy of Brilliant Diamond on ebay and wanted to go for Piplup as my starter, but on second thought I'll go with Chimchar knowing that it's the best fire type of its generation.

The best runner up starter for Infernape would probably be Torterra. Because of a free earthquake ( on evolution) which with the soft sand can one shot the entirety of any ground weak enemies in the game. And in this game even a digging pokemon can be hit by both magnitude and earthquake. IE Cyntia's Garchomp. Which Infernape typically loses to in a one on one. Downside though is getting to level 32 as a grass only type. Because as previously stated ( in the video) Roserade is hands down the better pokemon for grass. Another worthy of cosideration is the insanely tanky Gastrodon w/storm drain combo. Enough said on that one. There is an entire area with rain so this actually comes in handy in a few trainer battles. Including Post game.

I used none of these pokemon in my playthrough and I blazed through easily. I had Torterra, Luxray, Rapidash, Crobat, Golduck, Palkia, and towards the middle of the game I had a Noctowl.

I think you forgot 2 honerable mentions
    hauntelar for catching mesprit
and the scorpion poison guy for not being affected by any psychic move which means you can catch all 3 of them easily without losing any HP

and the scorpion poison guy is also fast and can lear night slash which has a high critical hit chance and his defence stats are not bad

The starting stats are the same.Their typing and abilities, as well as their levelling up pool, are where they differ.Mew is great because it can learn literally any move in the game. From TMs, TRs in Sword and Shield, Move Tutor moves, etc. If there is a way to learn the move, it can be learned. The only exceptions are moves that are taught exclusively to certain Pokemon, like Draco Meteor, being only taught to Dragons by the tutor or the elemental hyper beams being taught to the final evolutions of each starter. This doesn't mean Mew cannot learn them in the lore; it only means these tutors will not teach Mew. So, with Mew, the possibilities are endless, with the most common being a special attacker. Its levelling pool is also geared toward being a more offensive mon. Where Jirachi excels is in its ability to use Serene Grace, which doubles the chances of additional effects of moves being applied, and its steel typing. Both of these allow Jirachi to wall a lot of mons and survive hard attacks. First off, it can learn "Wish", which heals for half its max HP. Second, it has access to cosmic power, which raises its defence and special defence by 1 stage each. So immediately, you have access to defence boosts and healing. It also has access to a plethora of moves with secondary effects, like Zenheadbutt with a Flinch chance and Meteor Mash for the Attack stat being raised. In BDSP, its access to moves is more on the special side, being able to get Psychic, Shadow Ball, Flash Cannon, and Energy Ball, all of which lower Special Defense. In Sword and Shield, once access to them opens up, it gains access to Iron Head for more flinch, Play Rough for attack reduction of the target, and the elemental punches to inflict various statuses like Burn, Freeze, and Paralysis. Both mons are very versatile, but between the two most competitive players, I would choose Jirachi for the defensive capabilities it has. Using both on an in-game team, though, still works to your favour, though. I mean, 100 base stats across the board is fantastic.
