    Hey guys, This is such a help for us beginners. Putting all the steps in one video, one right after another, is a great idea. I think you've covered them all before in separate videos, but this makes it a lot more clear and logical for me to follow. Also, you've demonstrated some things that I been guessing at, sometimes correctly and sometimes not. Thanks!

    Started watching your videos 6 months or so ago. Love them, lots of little tips that I find very helpful. One thing I try to figure out in your videos is what wood that you are using for each project. I can usually tell but sometimes the board is mostly covered or the video is zoomed way in and I can not tell. I would like to know what varieties of wood you use. Best and worst for cutting.
    Thanks mike in minnesota

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  6 років тому

      Hi Mike, Thank you for watching, so glad we could help. I use several kinds of wood depending on how big the sign is and what's available to me at the time. Also depending on what the customer likes.
      1. My favorite is the cedar fencing. I think it's Northern White Cedar or similar. This is for smaller signs 5" wide or smaller.
      2. Then Redwood fencing for same sizes as above.
      3. Wider than 5" up to 11" wide I use Select Pine.
      4. For large signs sometimes laminated Redwood.
      5. Also for large signs laminated Western Red Cedar.
      6. Another option for large signs is a panel board that is made from a species of pine.
      All but the laminated Western Red Cedar are available at Lowes.
      Woods I don't use: Oak, Alder, Poplar, just about any hardwoods. I prefer the softwoods. Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with eric@makeawoodsign.com Thank you

    I just found your videos. They are awesome. I have experienced routers and love working with them.
    But my question is..how do you transfer your image to the wood (easiest way). Thank you for all your videos. I will definitely keep watching!

For artwork I have a playlist with several transfer techniques. My favorite is the one on #230. If you have any other questions I can help with you can email me directly eric@makeawoodsign.com.

      Hi Steve, glad you liked the video. We appreciate you watching. On the router bits there are several that we use for different types of carving. So it would depend on what you wanted to do. We have a playlist called Router Bits and videos that will show you what each one does. #38, 39 & 40 dad does a great job explaining each one of them. Let me know if I can answer any othe questions for you. Thank you again, Eric

    Love your tutorials! !!..hey, I can't find the precision bit you use for pictures.....what exactly do you use??..I have all types of bits for router and dremel but I need the kind you use for small pictures....can I use a V type at a shallow depth???...or a 1/8" straight bit for small pictures

      Thank you for watching and the nice compliments, we really appreciate it. Almost all our bits are a v groove. I mostly use 2 different bits for the small detail work. Our profile bit, and the SC-50. We have lots of videos where we show our bits but check out Coffee & Questions 8/31/16. I go over all the bits we use and what they do. Thanks again, Eric

    Hi Guys. New to sign making. Love your channel. If I wanted to use stain in a can, is it ok to stain it all at the end? I’m thinking of buying that spray stain you recommend but wanted to use stuff I had too.

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  5 років тому

      Thank you so much Clay!!! The problem you may have is the stain may react to the black background and cause it to streak. So you need to test your stain on scrap pieces to make sure it doesn't cause the black to run. If it does you'll need to be careful and not let the stain touch the black. Hope this helps. Thank you again and email me directly if you have any other questions, eric@makeawoodsign.com.

    awesome..i was introduced to your channel by the idaho painter sign video you did for him..ive always wanted to learn how to do signs like this one and make a little extra cash on the side..more as a hobby. but thanks for including the info on what bits and depths to use..this is a very good video for beginners like me..also what do you do as far as lettering? Is it hand drawn or can I buy stencils for every different font or letter style? and after you router or carve the outside of the letters i noticed there are like hills or uneven bit marks after..do you sand those flat or leave them? do you recommend any type of hand carving tools? i look forward to watching your videos. i would love to see you make a Harley davidson black and orange painted sign lije this one..or a good sized Ford emblem sign..it would be interesting to see how you do the lettering on the ford emblem..ive always wanted to do one..thanks for the great videos!!

      Hi Matthew, Thank you for watching. I use all kind of fonts, I call them Layout letters. We have lots of stuff available on our website makeawoodsign.com under the Sign Carving Supplies tab. I normally leave the background textured but I have ways to make it flat as well. I've done tons of different logos and designs. I don't do the Harley logo because of copy write issues but I do have a Live to Ride biker sign design I've showed several times. Last one on Coffee & Questions 2/1/17. I'm a new subscriber and I've only watched a couple of your videos (and am looking forward to more). I see that you use multiple routers. Can I do complete signs with a Dewalt trim router, or do I need to invest in another more powerful one for the larger areas?

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  7 років тому

      Hi Tim, thank you for subscribing & watching. Yes the dwp611 will do everything but some of the heavier operations eventually I would get a bigger router for. Otherwise if you start making lots of signs you may wear out your little trim router. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other specific questions I can help with, eric@makeawoodsign.com.

    • @oldave100

      I used several different bits on this one but the profile bit for the detail work. Watch our video Coffee & Questions 8/31/16 All Our Bits. I think this will give you an understanding of our bits and what they do. Absolutely you can use a big router to do this. I did it for decades. I just prefer the palm routers now for small work.
