    About to retire permanently and decided to get a new full size router, fixed & plunge base and some accessories/bits for a new hobby. This is an interesting make I think I'll give a shot at. Great video. Thank you

    Great video. I teach students how to make similar signage using a CNC, and watching this makes me appreciate hand tools. I’ve never attempted gold gilding and now I’m anxious to try, thank you for the step by step instructions.

    Lovely video!! Thanks! Generally, I cut corners when painting the letters. I like to fill the background with sand and spray paint the letter-cum-numbers from there. Once dry, I then remove the sand of course.

    A respectful comment based on 45 years making signs. On that split wood on the 3: there is a technique called "climb-cutting" - you run your router the "wrong" direction. In the case of the 3 where you had trouble, you'd run the router right-to-left. Use this technique in any area where you come to a situation where the router's going to get caught in the grain like that. Even the sharpest brand-new bit can dig the grain like that, depending on the species, grain, and dryness of the wood. I think of it as "rolling" along the wood rather than "back-pedaling" against the wood. It is a slightly dangerous technique and MUST be used with great care and a firm grip, as the router can skitter away from you in a fraction of a second. Try this on some scraps - great thing to remember on the two troublesome outside corners - which most rectangular signs have - these can present the same grain-splitting issue.

    • @davidographicsguy
      @davidographicsguy  6 років тому

      Very well said John, that’s a great explanation of flowing with the grain. Cedar is more like digging through thick carpet whereas Redwood, the grains are like speed bumps 😁 I was a little careless going around the bottom of the three. I have to have my head in the game every second. Thank you!

    Those scoop things - they're called gouges. Cedar is a very "stringy" wood for carving and chips out a lot when using a router. A good wood for carving this type of project is Basswood (Linden). Its soft like cedar but has very little grain pattern. A favourite for realistic decoy carvers.

    • @davidographicsguy
      @davidographicsguy  6 років тому

      I agree! I love basswood. I choose cedar for exterior durability and rough 'ol world' look. :)

    I was under impression that a sealer for. the gold would be advisable. Will the gold tarnish at all, not that is abad thing for old world look. subscribed.

      Thank you!
      Gold will outlive any top coat. Varnishes, sealers, etc... will all degrade before the gold will.

    Nice work. I would have left the excess wood in place until after I'd routed right up to the letters with the small router, more support for the router base that way.

      Ha! Thank you! I got really busy. I'm working on another alphabet video and a sign process video too. This one was a quick project for a client. I would love to see your gold projects.

    Very helpful video (as are all your videos...I'm a fan). 1 question...Did you varnish over the gold leaf after engine turning, or is it just bare gold? Thank you for your videos.

      No clear coat over gold. It diminishes its luster.
