Seeing a crippled Viking covered in blood, laughing and screaming at you in old Norse, is just a different level of fucking badass.
I don’t know, I find it hard to believe a squad of soldiers would just pause and not even shoot arrows at an enemy on the ground.

@@alvascott9823 I have been hyped on learning languages recently and I was checking, using a translator, for what he said for a couple of hours to find to which language old norse is similar to. According to google it's icelandic but like for my ear, it just didn't cover with the quote ivar says in this clip. I liked that language and wanted to learn the most similar one xD. I've lost so many time and the answer was in the comment section haha

It's slightly frustrating because Ubbe should have been able to do that himself. In the ancient stories, he was physically the strongest of the brothers and was almost unkillable in battle. I was looking forward to seeing Ubbe and Ivar working together to wreak havoc on England with Ivar as the brains and Ubbe as the muscle, just like how it seemed to be going when they teamed up kill Lagertha in Season 4 (frankly, I wish that's how it had gone down instead of Bjorn choosing that moment to come home). And we got a taste of just how terrifying Ubbe was at the end of season 4 in that one battle, but season 5 has ruined his character as far as I'm concerned.
@@JimmySteller I feel like the point of this whole scene was to show that Ivars determination to win and his certitude of success was far more important than his physicall restriction. I think that's why he was able to frighten so many men.
And I totally agree with you on the part that Ubbe is portrayed a bit differently than in the ancient stories. I have no doubt in the possibility of him being the physically strongest of the brothers, because he proved himself to be a great warrior.. In my eyes he just isn't as much of a go-getter as Ivar, but I might just be too biased lol
@@bianccahemms1978 I agree with you on Ivar's portrayal, and Alex Hogh is definitely the highlight of the show now that Ragnar is dead and Floki has been pushed to the side. My point was more that Ubbe should have been as much of a go-getter as his brother. He and Ivar famously worked together to conquer one English kingdom after another until Wessex was the only one left. I was looking forward to seeing that dynamic in the show, but they've decided to go in wildly different directions for whatever reason. I'm speaking entirely subjectively, of course; if you liked it, more power to you. I just felt let down personally.

I love the way this series depicts "magic." They're always occurrences rooted in reality that people choose to perceive as supernatural. Ivar is an excellent example. When the armies at York witness a cripple flinging axes while laughing and screaming with confidence, they are terrified because of how bizarre the sight is. There's no magic holding the enemy back, but he really sells it with his demonic visage. Later in the series, his confidence to walk into the midst of battle as a cripple and proclaim that he simply cannot be killed while staring at his enemies with his blue eyes is all but motivation and inspiration to his followers. The Saxons see it as some magic protecting him and puppeteering his warriors.
This was why I really hated the scene where the sons find out Ragnar died! Okay, maybe they were just seeing Odin in their heads, but how did they know he was dead? How did they hear his words, or how he died? It always bothered me, I wish it had been done differently
@@bradforever10 Even with that scene, I found it interesting that "Odin" said completely different words to each of them. To me, that seemed like an interesting way to imply that it was not a real event, but was all in their head, so none of their accounts would match up.

I think differently about Ubbe's reaction. The reason he didn't come to Ivar's defense was because he noticed that only Ivar's words did the job. He was in shock seeing his crippled brother holding all those soldiers back.
If this scene was in English it wouldn’t have hit as hard. I love that they chose to put that but in old Norse so you can understand how intimidating he must’ve been to that English army

Dont look for actual historical facts in this show. Because it isnt historically correct. Some parts are made kind of rigth , like the scenes where you see things like "the thing" , the trells, relations between men and women , their daily life. But things like dates , and "Kattegat", are wrong. Kattegat is , if I am not mistaken a part of the sea between southern Norway and northern Denmark.

-The "eg" used for me/I is from a Norwegian dialect. The written word for me/I in Norwegian is "jeg". (Jeg er viking/ I am Viking)

A "Skald" was a singer in the Viking age, and Einar Selvik is by far considered today's era best Skald.

My 5yr old son has Cerebral Palsy. He cannot walk. He crawls everywhere when not in his wheelchair. My husband randomly came across this video. We immediately got teary eyed. This video reminded us so much of our son ACE. The personality.. the savageness.. the ruthlessness… the determination. We have never seen this show, but it is playing on our tv now. We always say, “imagine if he did not have his disability.. how much trouble he would get in.” Our son is sweet as pie but has that savage in him. It’s crazy. I truly believe if we lived in that time… this would be him.

Everything about this scene was tailor-made to showcase how terrifying Ivar really is, the camera work was amazing. Ubbe’s reaction to seeing an army halt because of his brother 👌🏾

Everybody praising the acting (obviously, why not), but isn't anyone going to mention the amazing camerawork? The slight shakes zoomed in on his face adds to the aggression, madness and pure rage he's expressing. If it was a still shot it would be MUCH less impactful. Overall an awesome-ass scene.

@@khonsu9378 Most Norsemen/vikings was known for being fond of killing Christians, which is why the pagans/heathens had such a great scare effect on the christians, they literally reminded them of being the opposite of everything their priest had been telling them, in other words, they believed that the vikings was indeed the devils spawn which generated even more fear, but yes the real Ivar the boneless was known for being not only a powerful warrior but one who enjoyed killing and going into battle.

This kid Alex Høgh Andersen just has that look ... I can't explain it any further than that but, in my opinion, not many actors could've pulled off those facial expression and screams along with the tone of the lines spoken ... he killed it.

One of my fav scenes in the whole series. Ivar took his ruthlessness just as his father told him to, and used it to his ultimate advantage here. Blood running down his face in a manner that shows him as bloodthirsty, the chanting in Norse, laughing and applauding a man that wants to kill him, getting shot in the leg and looking as if it’s an inconvenience instead of an injury. Such a brutal yet iconic scene

This was one of my favorite moments from this show. The acting was movie quality. Ivar The Boneless became my favorite character by the end of the show. That evil laugh to the priest was great.

I love how Ubbe sees Ivar holding off an entire company through sheer will, a feat worthy of earning him a seat in Valhalla and he stops the reinforcements from standing in Ivar's way if this was the moment Odin wanted to take him home. After seeing that his brother has shook the enemy to the point that not one of them will challenge Ivar he charges to slaughter the cowards, but not until he has shown that they fear his little Brother.
The acting in this scene is jaw droppingly good! Just wow! Phenomenal acting!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Alex Høgh Andersen (Ivar The Boneless) Is legit the best actor I've ever seen. He wasn't an old actor. Vikings were the first movie he was in. And the best thing is, he's Danish, like me! :D. That scene is the best I've seen in Vikings. Just the way he screams at the English men Is so powerful! And he, of course, can't kill every one of them by himself. So he screams and scares them. And they can't understand what he is saying! And that demonic laugh at 2:19 is just priceless. Best Viking EVER!
