That guy Dementus killed was a great asset to humanity. The guy was replicating old artworks and even had telephones. He was basically the wasteland Davinci.
He probably was twisted like Joe, People Eater and Bullet Farmer BUT i would genuinely vouch for keeping him alive solely based off his amazing artistic skills.

I agree. It was cool seeing him as a competent warlord. He knows the production of the Citadel well enough to know what can be sustained, and later he quickly orders guzzling rationing once Dementus tries to cut him off.
He also successfully tricks Dementus into attacking a prepared Citadel thanks to Furiosa’s warning, and handily crushes the Biker Horde in the 40 day war.
plus the new actor also plays the one-eyed lieutenant for Dementus, the actor was literally playing two different characters in one setting

This film was so much better than what the box-office numbers suggest.
In slight bits it was, but the constant narrative pushing killed the overarching story.
The original "Fury Road" at least had a bit more to offer than "Men bad". Though it also spewed that garbage, it did so with much more subtlety.

Dementus walked into that meeting with the intention of ripping off Immortan Joe, but left with no medic, no "daughter" and no nipples! Big win for Joe
You can see at 4:53 that he wants to throw a tantrum, but realizes that he’s dead if he does so, and has to fight to keep his toddlerish rage in check while trying to act tough to save face in front of his men that he promised double rations to and now can’t deliver

I love how it takes Rizzdale Pell announcing their intention to blow up Gastown for Joe to finally turn around and look at his visitors. And he’s just got this look like “Excuse me?”
And the fact he doesn't say shit until he spots Furiosa. There was never a single second of this where he actually took Dementus seriously

When at 2:55 the Organic Mechanic says she is untouched by man or disease, Dementus gives him a look and shakes he head...completely missed that the first time I watched in theatre! Wow, Dementus didn't want to give her up

He was faking it so Joe can think he got him beat in the deal but dementus thinks bringing her will encourage Joe to accept the deal.
@@KirtianM Do you think she'll be safer with the degenerates that follow Dementus? He wanted to protect her and the best way to do that was if she was in his presence, that's also why he had the organic mechanic and history man with him.
@@KirtianM as we saw earlier in the movie, he drags her everywhere with him, for sentimental value. Plus there's always risk of someone raping her or her trying to run away if he leaves her behind.
5:45 - i genuinely believe that Immortan was trying his absolute hardest not to burst into laughter right then and there. Not only did he completely rip off dementus but he also took his pureborn "daughter" and their groups most valuable medic all while letting Dementus think he was the sole Winner of the meeting 💀
Not to mention the increased rations aren't enough to support all of GasTown AND Dementus' biker hoard. Joe sowed the seeds of Dementus' defeat in like 30 seconds lol.
If there's any takeaway from this film, it's that Immortan Joe was genuinely pretty good at what he did and Dementus was just a goofy pretender.

Immortan Joe was a pretty good villain in Fury Road, but this movie made him a legend. Guy just stole every scene he was in and really sold that larger-than-life aura of an absolute ruler. He seemed kind of unhinged in Fury Road, but here we got a glimpse of the cold-blooded genius he was.

Whats insane was Immortan joe was losing against Dementus, if it was not for Furiosa Immortan Joe probably would have lost, the Horde had guns and climbing ropes, not much the war boys could actually do if they got the horde on the top of the mountains fully stocked up

mostly agree, but i do like the vocal work better in fury road.
After seeing Immortan Joe being persistently blinded by his obsession in Fury Road, it was great to see him in this film and find out how he was able to rule in the first place; by being a bloody competent warlord.
I love the way Dementus' crew are congratulating him afterwards (apparently sincerely) for his "beautifully played" and "peak"... loss of his adopted daughter (who has enormous sentimental value), loss of the best/only doctor they have (enormous practical value), and gain of... peace instead of a war (that Dementus had a decent chance of winning, as he genuinely IS good at surprise tactics!) and a third more water and a quarter more potatoes (instead of the double of everything they were demanding at the start).
It makes it so clear that Dementus and his crew are totally outclassed, even if you haven't seen Fury Road so don't know that Immortan Joe is destined to still be in control of the Citadel decades later.
It gets even better if you also suspect (like I do) that Joe deliberately planted the seeds of Dementus' loss of control in Gastown.
We can assume that Joe knows exactly how much water and food the Gastown workers needed to be productive slaves (he's been running shipments to them for years, after all), and could make a reasonable estimate of how much Dementus' horde would need to be content having seen its size earlier (thanks for that show of strength, Dementus, that was really useful info!) so him giving Dementus a third more water and a quarter more potatoes might well have been calculated to avoid immediate death and conflict by mass dehydration while ensuring that there wasn't enough food to feed both the workers and Dementus' huge horde without putting them onto starvation rations that would inevitably cause discontent and disintegration over time.
If so, then that stare Joe is sending him at 5:55 isn't a glower of hatred, there would probably be a triumphant smile under his mask as he watches this upstart swagger around and declaring himself an equal right after accepting the terms of his own doom.

He was an Australian Military Officer. Joe was a war hero during the Oil and Water Wars.
While Immortan Joe likely planned for Dementus to lose control of Gas Town, he definitely didn't get the outcome he wanted. As mentioned multiple times throughout the film, the three cities support one another with vital resources. Mismanagement of one city has drastic consequences, as the underlying infrastructure is not something they can easily repair.
Given the situation, it's likely Immortan realized early on that Dementus, while a competent tactician, is inexperienced in logistics. Any other raider boss, accustomed to stripping an area clean and moving on, would likely keep to old habits and quickly earn the ire of both the locals and their own men as consumption outpaces production. At this point, the raider boss should be unpopular enough to be replaced with zero complaint from all parties.
In a way, Dementus does fall into Joe's trap. He clearly does not understand how gasoline production works, and the system increasingly worsens under his rule. However, contrary to Joe's expectations, Dementis has too much charisma for his men to outright abandon him. In fact, his charisma is enough for his men to attempt another raid, this time on Bullet Town.
At this point, whatever plans Immortan Joe had have now backfired. Instead of a weakened tyrant to dispatch at his leisure, he has an unpredictable rival with access to more resources than he started with. Had Dementus won, one way or another, all three cities would've been devoured down to the bones.
This scene was great, the actor playing Immortan Joe does an excellent job considering the shoes he had to fill.

Now if something happens - it is Immortan Joe or someone of his retinue (like Rectus as it was in the movie) who is made co-responsible because they've failed to negotiate in time.
It also serves as a parallel to what Dementus is about to do to the Gas Town should Joe refuse coming to terms. Like "see, dude, blowing it up 's gonna hurt really, but we're nomads, we shall withstand this pain? How 'bout you?" The Man Eater holding to his pierced nipples is the answer - the economy will be hurt pretty damn hard, if not fatally.

AGREED! Though you can check out the Hope and Glory film on UA-cam which was from this era and from a graphic novel co-written by Miller. It's probably as close as a movie as we will get unless they make the real thing
George is such a unique director. All of his Mad Max movies were production nightmares, but he got them all done.
I hope he has enough time to make the last one he envisioned.

Dementus was a literal Vampire eating Furiosa's blood for pudding for years.
I had a feeling that was just a quick lie to justify her being pale. Especially since Dementus went on the offensive with insults as a diversion after. She did not look sick. She looks like she was just kept out of the sun being in that cage due to radiation etc. Which is what Dementus claims previously.

What I like about Dementus is that he was just smart and charismatic enough to cause trouble for all the major factions, but not smart enough that he could take over. He just rode into town and made everything worse for a decade or so.
The actor playing immortal Joe nailed the facial expressions and cadence brilliantly. Top performance so mesmerising and intense, his eyes look stunning.
Not even close to as cool as the Fury Road Movie Immortal Joe. This version is watered down.

The movie is so packed with historical allusions, it's harder to find a split second where it is not based on real events, ancient myths or both.

I would say this is how diplomacy works, with the only exception that normally the haggling goes much longer. Both sides start with unrealistic demands, and the reduction from what Dementus initially demanded and what he eventually got is very fair by those standards. It is not unheard of the victorious ending up on worse terms than what they've started with.
The art of diplomacy is then to find the pain threshold. One of the most valued CIA agents in Kremlin, whom the soviets liquidated on spot once he was cracked, leaked exactly that - what was the soviet's pain threshold, so that the US could target the demands just a bit above.

I like this moment 5:12 even tho they hate each other they can’t help but feel some attachment for one and the other, Dementus uses her to fill the void of his lost Child and Furiosa sees him as a parent figure, despite everything he kept her safe and at the end she wanted to keep the Tedy bear after rejecting it at first.
Sucks this movie didn't do well in theatres. Its not as good as Fury Road, but its still a solid 8 or 9 out of 10.
I just hope this doesn't screw up any futures movies. We need the 3rd movie with Max in it.

@@drewske1984I’ve heard rumors about it being a series, which would only give more time to flesh things out, I honestly think Furiosa might’ve worked better as a series too, but I obv loved the final product.
Remember guys: Blade Runner flopped; Gattaca flopped; Firefly got cancelled. Those were the movies far ahead of their time, people had to wrap their heads around it.
Furiosa is truly a saga, packed with historic allusions at every shot. Comparing it to any other Mad Max movie is simply wrong - it's a different genre. Kudos to Miller, who was not afraid not to stick to the formula.
Fury Road was not a massive hit either, despite the plaudits. I am pretty sure that Ant-Man 3 outsold it.
@@gentblue I don't know, whether I am old enough to lament the sorry state of humanity. It seems, thought, that the wide majority prefers to see the war as this mass Avenger-esqe standout of all the good guys against all the bad guys where conflict ends as soon as the final boss is defeated, rather than that long and bloody thing between - way too often - two and more evils, where the larger and smaller one depends rather on the side one found themselves on. Furiosa tried - and flopped.
This movie was just released at the wrong time, it took too long to come out that the hype died down, the current woke culture turned off a lot of people even tough this one clearly was not trying too be( it is actually real) plus the over used the budget, it cost more than fury road to make, there are other factors but those 3 in particular really effected it, it will still remain a cult classic but it is safe to say that the mad max saga is going to be dormant again for a long while.
I think it could’ve worked better as a series, simply because there were a few characters like Mary & Jack, or plot points like the Wasteland Wars that definitely needed more time to breathe. It probably would’ve done better financially if this was the case as well.
Lachy Hulme deserves a ton of credit. He plays Rizzdale Pell (Dementus' one-eyed henchman), he plays Immortan Joe, AND he narrates the movie. He did a fantastic job.

Immortan Joe demanding the Organic Mechanic as part of the deal shows exactly why Joe is a more competent leader than Dementus. Joe recognizes that for as powerful as he his, there are things that he just doesn't have the skills or training for. Instead he augments his power with skilled individuals. Dementus simply considers his own ability without any care of the individuals under his command. Simply put Dementus commands his horde, Immortan Joe delegates his empire

1. Agrees on the most abundant resource - but much less than demanded. This means that.
2. He conceded on even less of the most abundant food (Dementus demands protein, gets a bit more carbs instead)
3. Re-establishes status quo - first for Dementus, then for himself.
"Deal" - says Dementus, who still loses nothing. This gives Joe s free hand to start with his own demands. And so he
4. Demands a symbolic asset - which Furiosa is of now for Dementus, and may be of actual value for Joe.
5. Demands a crucial asset - which is organic mechanic.

Also an excellent detail that the Organic Mechanic is a canny one. Immediately recognizes Immortan’s unusually strong interest in Furiosa and starts listing off her qualities and what makes her so valuable in this radioactive half-life populated wasteland. Even if he doesn’t know exactly why Immortan wants her, he rattles off reasons why her “price” is high, high enough for Immortan to take her (and unintentionally selling himself as well) and nothing else in exchange for increasing rations by a non insubstantial amount. He sees the way the winds blowing, with Immortan poised to take what he wants, and makes the best of it.
Its barbaric of course, as she’s a kid and a human being, not a object to be bartered over, but its a way of showing why the Mechanic survived as long as he does, because he has a knack for spotting what warlords like Immortan (and no doubt Dementus’ whims, in however long he’s served him) want

I like the People Eater as a side character. We see he's a numbers man, a man who, though cruel by today's standards, is definitely needed in a time of scarce resources. It's also why I thought Mad Max Fury Road had the bittersweet ending when the protagonists dump all the water onto the populace - it feels nice at the time, but as the People Eater says "The wasteland can't sustain it, run the numbers", they were dooming themselves through over-indulgence.

He didn’t have much dialogue in Fury Road, but him berating Joe of their losses after getting stuck in the mud sticks with me.
@@tacitus6384 Joe certainly was a "character". Nothing works quite as well to tell an audience a character is irredeemably evil as "liking" children. Though I think the audience watching the films didn't quite need that tidbit to know Joe was awful. They did include it for Rictus though.

Some people are just *maxed* out, I guess.
I kinda assumed theyd waste more of the movie on Furiosa or her mother. Of id known it was MOSTLY about the Gastown/Biker wars, i would have gone to see it.

The movie was perfect. Dementus stole the show but they all did. the nameless barbarians, the side characters. Furiosa, the world building and the action had very little silly going on.
Showed much of the barbarian nature. The ONLY thing I regretted was the ending for Dementus.
It was a flawless performance.

My favorite movie this year so far.
Scene showed his how Immortan Joe was ruthless, yet competent. Also showed what led to his downfall: growing obsession with a true male heir (genetic absurdities don't count).
Dementus is like Max from an alternative universe
According to George Miller, Dementus was basically meant to be a mix of Jack and Max if the madness of the Wasteland made them evil as well as a self-styled Julius Caesar archetype.
Max was originally supposed to be an EMT Medic behind the scenes, and Dementus is at times referred to as “Doctor Dementus” he most certainly lost his family in a similar way to Max Rockatansky, but took a drastically different turn after the fact.
Max chose to stick to his MFP and possible military training after everything else was taken from him. That’s why he rebuilt his Interceptor, it was to remind himself of who he was before the fall, in order to not loose his identity as a symbol of justice.

That would be an epic set from the pre-apocalyptic era when Joe was in the army, up until he takes over the citadel. Imagine the budget of realising Miller's vision of the apocalypse. Sadly with the flop of this film all we can do is imagine it

As a reward this guy has water, fresh veggies, gruel, protein mix, shelter, security and access to what's left of technology.

It's criminal how this movie was not a box office hit. And I haven't even seen it. But I've seen clips and heard about how good this movie. I've seen all the other Mad Max movies and they are all EPIC. Fury Road might the best action sci Fi movie ever. Highly underrated franchise. Maybe they should make a anime movie of Mad Max movie. Since they will probably make a live action movie because of the poor box office numbers of Furiosa.
Not animated, gotta be live action. The whole point of Mad Max is the stunts and physical vehicles, the story too, obviously.
Dementus got played in this deal! Joe got an organic mechanic and a new full life as a future wife!
Immortan Joe’s voice compared between this movie and Fury Road is actually pretty fascinating. As a younger man, he was healthier. 20 years later, his voice sounds demonic and Dart Vader-like. Knowing his health was gradually getting worse, I am not quite surprised that his voice changed.
If I was part of Dementus's posse I'd say: "Technically he didn't lie. She really hasn't said a word since we killed her mum."

This movie was pretty good NOW we need more of Immortan Joe's origin story in the next Mad Max prequel. I feel like Immortan Joe + the Wasteland lore is too dense for just another movie though. The franchise needs a tv series with multiple seasons to unpack everything.
