They have made it impossible to have a favorite Metallica song
1c3 sLy1 can’t say you’re wrong !
One word. Awesome 👍 never know a Group like these
@Grinny Only one i really don't love is Escape
@@arttuuusisalo8709 Escape is a good song nothing mindblowing but still 10 times better than anything they did past Black Album. Except for maybe The Day That Never Comes.
Facts
This intro tape just screams "we're going to play it on S&M2 guys" and I love it
Yeah they have done several songs that way on the europe leg. I'm totally stoked. Can't wait to get to frisco
It'd be a shame if they played this again. I love it, of course, but I'd rather have Orion this time.
@@nicosimioni7363 Maybe they will do both
Watch them not put this song in "s&m" lol
Doubt it, they played it at the last one
I remember asking myself, back in 86, hearing this : what the fuck is this ? Progressive rock, classical music ? No, just a masterpiece.
Just Magic!
This is where neo-classical metal has it's roots.
الدرمر اسطوري
Progressive rock
Each song that they play is their best, until that song becomes the best
Remember, they wrote this song in there 20’s. That’s talent!!
dave wrote this when he was younger than 20
Well, Dave technically contributed to the song as well, but yeah, I agree with you on the fact that they are talented
skinkroot he didn’t write it though he just had a few riffs in it completely different from composing it all together
@@dominicdefonseka3647 he wrote the entirity of call of ktulu . you are mistaking it with ride the lightning, he only wrote part of that song
Cliff Burton wrote the intro to For Whom the Bell Tolls when he was as 16. He played it at a talent show in High school. Everyone though he was a joke. Whoops I guess they miss judged pure genius .
Rob really does a great tribute to Cliff when he plays this song. You can hear lots of stuff from live performances that cliff would do in his playing here. Rob does a great job at adding his personal flare to this song while still paying tribute to the OG. I love Rob in Metallica I think he's fits super well.
He fits perfectly because he can play everything on bass, he is a fan of the band and most importantly, he knows that he is basically session player in biggest band in the world and his ego is perfectly fine with that. Dont bite the hand that feeds. On the other hand, I think that his presence made them to show some balls and that is one of the biggest reasons why they made great album Death Magnetic and their live performances are better and better every tour. 2000s Metallica was cringe especially James singing but since HWTSD tour they are technically at their peak. Maybe not fastest but certainly they are tighter than ever and James sounds great. Jason was much needed collateral damage.
@@dekapitatorr You are correct up until ‘On the other hand’.
@@dekapitatorr while Rob seems like a session player, hes anything but. A lot of what you said is accurate though. He has made the rest of the guys step up, but in turn, he has helped write so many of their best songs since he joined. Hes also done backup vocals on tracks like Dream No More. I feel like Jason was unfortunately more a session player the way he was treated. What happened with Jason opened their eyes and as a result Rob is treated like a fully participating member of the band
I dont need Metallica to be fast. I need Metallica to be dominant.
That why they choose rob. They realize in audition that rob play bass similar to cliff.
Sorry for my broken english😅
Wow, love hearing Rob's bass shine throughout the entire song!
metfan4l personally I thought the bass mix was a little quiet. He rocks this song tho no doubt
@@RooftopKorean917 Yeah, especially seeing as the bass is the main melodic instrument in much of this song
Suicide & Redemption please! ❤
its too bad with all the technology these days that they can't replicate cliffs bass tone
Robs bass mix In 2017 was kinda over powering.
I just love how they make intro tapes for songs lately
I know! I love it!
Believe its one they are going to be playing at S&M2 in San Fran in a little over a week. I'll let you know the morning of the 9th after I attend the 9/8 show. :)
welp...I hope so, my favourite one until now it's the one for The Day That Never Comes, I never knew that if they reversed the intro for the song it will sound that majestic!
It's really beautiful....
@Mike Oxlong It's still half a step. And it's just a different key, it's not like the song is different or suddenly becomes shit if you change the key.
It's always a good day when Metallica decides to play this song.
I saw them live two days earlier and they didn't play it :(
It’s always a good day when Metallica is played
Even st anger
I've seen 3 times live in France, but never played the "Call of Ktulu" ...
Right
Robbie pulls off the gargantuan task of playing those phrases, scales and bass swells. Cliff would be proud 🤘🤘🤘

Hated the part where he forgot the lyrics though
I really cannot find the words to describe this masterpiece
Nor can I, it is a masterpiece
Neither could the band, hence the instrumentality and no lyrics
the other Lovecraft inspired song The Thing That Should Not Be is the lyrics :D
The word is masterpiece
@@DekkarJr yes, and also all nightmare long and dream no more
Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn! Lars and Rob particularly shine here, even though the whole band is on fire.
Rob is always great, I mean he is the only one with james to practice, he is technically better than Jason Newsted also
They were phenomenal in Munich. As they were throughout the European Stadium Tour. Seemed like they played a lot during "resting period". Maybe did some Studio Work ?
@@FartSniffer1 Rob is the only one who actually practices (I don't think James practices much I mean he is the rhythmic player), and besides that, he's composed a riff or two, For Suicide and Redemption, amazing instrumental work as well
James has the best clean sound in metal. No doubt about that. I absolutely love Kirk, but following that clean intro it sounded like Kirk came in with a trumpet :D Love you guys!
He was doing Vol Swells. Sounded good tho.
It's definitely one of the best. ESP guitars sound amazing with clean tones
Usually if they play this live they just have the clean part as a backing track. Interesting seeing James playing the intro live and playing it better and having it sound better than the actual studio album version. Was such a good live sound from everyone as well Kirk and Lars were sounding really good as well, Rob solid as well.
According to legend, Cthulhu will appear once the bass player has achieved ultimate finger blistering
Close but no. Actually it's Ktulu who appears, and he pops the bass players' huge calluses.
4:12 Kirk still rocking that invisible wah!
He was keeping the tempo lol😂
@@jfr49djd39jcuuhg well you seem surprised 😁😁😂
@@jfr49djd39jcuuhg Wow if only that was the joke
"That was for you, Cliff"
Okay i'm going to cry right now
Should've thanked Dave too.
Bekka Nelson ahhhh can you stop mentioning someone who already success with his own band. I know he wrote some part of this song🙄
România
This is the epitome of Metallica. It's the electronic re-invention of classical music. Dynamic, thought-provoking and emotional... Absolute Masterpiece. the only song in metal in my opinion that equals this is Hallowed be thy name by Maiden.
It’s 2020 and it still feels like Ride the lightning came out yesterday
Ride the Lightning was my first album ever. I showed to a friend of mine. She was the daughter of our pastor, so my mother was informed quickly ...
No doubt literally
Never gets old. A hundred years from now, they will call it "classical music".
My favorite album from Metallica!!
1984 was a longggggg time ago man....idk about that
You can see in their eyes that they love that song from the times when they were young... and so do I. One of the greatest instrumental pieces of heavy metal ever... and the one that might (or might not) be greater is from them as well!
They should do Orion and to live is to die for S&M2
And suicide and redemption
yes please. Orion sounds like it's both made for metal and classical, the way it's composed
and The Call of Ktulu
Suicide & redemption also
Suicide & Redemption please! ❤
wow, that crowd reaction was so weak... i would have screamed, i always wanted to hear ktulu live
that whole fucking crowd was weak the whole concert. 90% were there to hear nothing else matters and didn't care for anything.
I cried when I heard the intro at the S&M2 show. A lifelong dream come true.
Ikr? I would too! I’d kill to listen to this or any other song from Metallica live! I’d be screaming and saying, “I love you guys, and I love you, too, Cliff!”
Most people today go to a concert because they want a cool post in social media. The bigger, the most expensive, the most sold out the better it is. Real fans are a minority on such "Events"... :-( Especially in a "rich city" like munich....
I wasn't there but I imagine this is because they reduced the volume of the crowd before uploading. I've seen quite a few metallica concerts online and the crowd wasn't so weak. It's probably because they reduced the volume while mastering so that there's emphasis on the song
Robert looks like he’s playing the bassline with his face.
Musik Fiend..... Robert looks absolutely great and if you play bass-guitar on this level you also would look like him or maybe comical.....
Kirk open his mouth when he plays his greatest solos.... that’s normal..!!!!! :(
@@christianschaller8895 good job at tacking all the fun out of the comment...
Sebastian Busuioc... cannot find any fun on the comment !!!!! Pst 🤫 better you listen the sound and bass !!! 🤘🤘🤘
@@christianschaller8895 Cliff still is so much better. Robert is no Cliff.... Cliff version is way better just saying
You know they've given him the raw studio bass tracks from Cliff and he's like, muthafucka, i gotta play this shit perfect or i can't live with myself. And then he's like "how tha fuck did he play this shit"? Cliff was Jimi Hendrix on a bass.
Just incredible. I can't help but think of Cliff. İt's so unfair he didn't get to live and experience the entirety of the greatest of his band. İt still shocks me. He was killed and the others walked away unhurt. RİP Cliff.
We all know the ultimate Metallica instrumental is Orion, but there's no denying that Ktulu's Call is pretty epic.
Nah, Ktulu slaps
In my humble opinion, Ktulu is just one single step ahead from Orion, both being the ultimate thrash instrumentals
Personally I like Ktulu over Orion. Yeah Cliff didn’t get to have a Bass solo, but the roaring bass in the distance was absolutely insane.
To live is to die -> orion -> ktulu
INTRO OF DISPOSABLE HEROES ANESTHESIA....KTULU... ORION....TO LIVE IS TO DIE...
The Call of Ktulu => S&M
Orion => Through The Never
To Live is to Die => S&M2
it'd be fair isn't?
I understand your want for raraties but I want to hear fade to black at s&m 2... harvester of sorrow and day that never comes too
They are definitely not playing To Live is to Die at S&M2, hope my comment is wrong though.

Robert is an absolutely amazing bass player! He is almost as good as cliff.
Cliff is a legend though, and no one can compare or compete with Cliff’s bass playing!
The Call of Ktulu / Cliff's spirit is always there
I have no words to describe how much I love this song. Masterpiece in rock music history! Thank you!
Totally agree 👍 unbelievable ROCK
They didn't have any words either! :P
Metal not rock
The reaction of a crowd can also sound weak because of weak micing and mixing into the final track.
You should thank Dave :)

I AM JUST CUTTING ONIONS OKAY?!?
Rob: goes to Cliff's solo hardest part
Montage guy: shows Lars...
I really like how they allways remember and honor Cliff, you could tell that they were all true Bros!

Metallica plays Ktulu:
Chtullu: what?
Also Chtullu: I wish they'd stop calling me
OMERTA 3:16 TV this song title is kinda badass tbh
Its Cthulhu btw
I thought it Cthulhu? man the spelling is really confusing
cthulu ... awaken! from hardwired
Aku Metallica spelt it as Ktulu. Ik, it’s not how to spell it, but that’s how they done it. Can’t change it now, lol.
The orchestra are still playing along in my head :)
Such an instrumental masterpiece, still get chills listening to it. The energy the guys put into the live performances is on another level.
It’s sad nobody makes instrumentals like this anymore no words just raw emotion laid on a track
There are very few songs that give me musical chills. The orchestral intro into the haunting Hetfield melody was incredible
Lucas Hagelin I’m a huge Metallica fan, but credit where it’s due, that intro is Dave Mustaine’s.
Goddamn, that S&M intro. I can only imagine how many people went "HOLY SHIT" when they heard that.
Alex I was there and I went „HOLY SHIT“ 😂
@@MxEnergyGreen Me too! Holy shit!
I was there and when I heard that tape I though they were gonna tease us with kutulu and then play No leaf clover, but as soon as I heard James play the first fucking chord I flipped shit
Even I'm sitting here in Bangladesh, watching this on UA-cam and I'm like, "holy shit!" \m/
What is the S&M intro?
Kirk: haha wah pedal go brrr
Rob: haha 2 wah pedals go brr brr

Chris T It’s just a shame that his distorted tone is such garbage. Needs more fuzz and/or overdrive.
@@j0hnsturm this tone is pretty sucky but the last time they played cthulu hsi tone was amazing
@@mirkecWii which makes me wonder even more why it has gotten to the shitter so badly, since the other instruments (and even the non distorted bass) started to sound better since then.
@@guitarded55 yeah Robs bass changes sound A LOT, there was a time at the begining of the year or last year when his bass had the ugliest tone ever and since then it sounded good and now its back to shit
