You know you’ve succeeded as a band when your audience sings the solo
Or when you're still together doing shows after like 300 years lul
Same goes for Iron Maiden

Live Lincoln Nebraska 2021
I'm always fascinated by the sheer artistic composition of this song. I realize that many people view Master of Puppets as Metallica's greatest song but I feel like Fade to Black is Metallica's Stairway to Heaven. It takes the listener through a melodic journey but underneath it is a dark emotion that lingers throughout until it just bursts at the end. Such a great song and a greater band; I've listened to these guys for nearly 25-years and they are my voice when I'm silent, they are my tears when I can't cry and they are my anger when I'm sitting still.
"...they are my voice when I'm silent, they are my tears when I can't cry and they are my anger when I'm sitting still."

Please don’t compare this masterpiece to the piece of trash Stairway….

Ryan Ford Agree and Orion Santarium
They didn't even play Sad But True at S&M2 I was pissed
Still amazing though
I saw them in vienna and i was really disappointed not to hear this legendary song, it was great show anyway.
Totally agree. I cannot understand why songs as "orchestrable" as this one, Sanitarium or Unforgiven (the original, much better than III) were never played in any S&M.
It hurts me to watch them get older. I’m getting tickets to the next show near me...period

Seeing Gary's guitar in Kirk's hands, it almost brings me to tears.
Used to be Peter Green’s before that too, that LP has had a great life.

Way the go, Kirk
If you watch this clip thinking of how James is struggling in real life it makes this song very presonal, get well soon brother.
@John But James is still alive! Who passed out was Cliff, in 1986:(
All them years I'm sure he misses his Brother Cliff Burton.
Kirk Hammet really made a comeback in terms of his playing.
@@pingpongpung -.-
A comeback??? When did he ever fall off??
@Fishermanguy44 - Nah...it is the nearly 1 million dollar guitar that he is playing that made him suddenly start to play killer again. hehe. The effectiveness of his multiple hair transplants wore off a long time ago. But the Peter Green/Gary Moore guitar came with instructions on how to play his own songs.
..All jokes aside, if I owned that guitar, I would never travel overseas with it. Though, I'm sure he probably buys the thing its own airplane seat. Unfortunately, I am lefthanded and there were only 2 lefties ever made..so I will never own one of those badboys. Plus, I don't have 800,000$ to spend on a guitar. hehe.
William Perry late 90s and early 2000s were not very good for him
It's obviously not the guitar, a Les Paul for heavy soloing can be as lazy as a strat if not equiped for it
imagine being 50+ years old and still playing full length concerts
You find that a lot, in the oldschool rock and metal groups. I mean the fact that I could see Ozzy alive AND performing at this point is but a miracle.
But at the end of the day, record labels will tell you "oh you are in your mid 20ies, you are too old, we don't get any mileage off of your career". Bastards... Nothing else.
If this isn’t played at my funeral, I’m not going
oh im so sorry you didnt get the 1k likes you wanted i hate you ppl in every metallica song saying the same thing im bored of this shit

I only just found out about the fact Kirk owns the Peter Green/Gary Moore Les Paul. Gary Moore was a massive influence on me even wanting to dabble on the guitar. Kirk playing it for this song nearly brought me to tears. As this is one of the only Metallica songs I ever took the time to try and learn.
A lot of blues elitists like to shit on Kirk for owning it, saying he probably put emgs in it. Kirk is a big old blues fan and respects this guitar and its history. It deserves to be played and the tone of that into solo is incredible.
Paid a couple of million for it allegedly
I didn’t see this comment before commenting myself. This was quite the moment for me as well when I realized that was “The Les Paul!”

Yeah man, Kirk sure is doing his best to honor and love that guitar, taking it out to play live instead of sitting in some collectors house. His tone and focus is killer, letting it sing, Gary-style. Simply awesome.

S&M2 is the most disappointing thing Metallica has done. It was just a cheap cash grab to celebrate the opening of a new stadium, nothing more. Loads of missed potential. I'm most mad that they didn't even play Minus Human.

Life, it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things are not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Can't stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone
No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
