    I just wanted to take a second and say thank you to everyone in this incredible community. Your support of our creativity over the years has truly changed our life. It is so wild to think about us in our tiny NYC apartment, in our early 20s with jobs we weren't happy with, dreaming of working together, creating together, and living life on our terms.
    Seeing all the archival footage of the different adventures we've had over the last few years really made my heart to full. I remember how nervous I was starting out the Inktober challenge. Even sharing my drawings on this channel had my stomach in knots. But now I am so much more comfortable knowing that being the best at something isn't a pre-requisite to enjoying something. In fact, focusing on the outcome of creativity steals so much of the joy for me. Instead of putting my energy towards the creative process, how I feel during and after carving out some time for myself, that is what makes me happy, not critiquing whatever I made. (I guess that turns out to be tip number 6 hahah)
    I could talk about creativity and the creative process forever, so thank you for letting me chat with you about it for 15 minutes. I hope you enjoyed it and maybe even feel inspired to go make something yourself!
    Big hugs,
    Dana

    I say that I am “pathologically creative” and if I take care of that by painting, gardening, cooking making my clothes or whatever comes along then the rest of my life happens without stress. I get you Dana. Love your videos. From a like minded Nana

    Thank you so much for the inspiration Dana, I am finally thinking to fully return to my youtube channel and working on new one too and this indeed helps me a lot. With the new year starting our life will take a very different turn, which brings me butterflies from all the what iff and the unknowns but I am not scared or not for now. This indeed helps me, set my goals the way I wan't them to. Working as social media coordinator for nearly 5 years is really burning me out, and you are right there are days I feel very out of
    Ideas, and those are all tips I am trying to use to stay connected or in tune with the trends as I do work for a big University. Like you said finding similar people with similar interests is so important, this is one reason why I enjoy your content, as me and Stan are also striving to this type of life - simple, yet creative and inspiring. I am definitely going to try and add some more new hobbies on my list for next spring to try.
    Sending a smile from Oklahoma to
    You all!

    This was great! So I had a CREATIVE idea for you: what about taking some of your Hawai'i paintings (even do some of your dog!) and put them on T-shirts to sell here? I saw a great shot here in your video of 2 craggy trees with the shoreline to the right. Even if you did just 12, put them here, & continued on with your sketchbook. It would just be an offshoot of that BIG creative project, done in a smaller time step.

    About a year ago I finally finished a sketch book. What a great feeling that was!!! Good luck. Another minor challenge I had was to finish a paint tube. Both of course the journal and paint have to be of a reasonable size which can almost be impossible to find for journals. Why do manufacturers think we want/need soo many pages. Too heavy and too daunting.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  2 роки тому

      Wow that is amazing, congratulations on finishing your sketch book!!! Thank you so much for your comment, and sending you big hugs! xxx

    All great tips, I resonate most with getting out into nature and consuming inspiring content as a big reset to inspire creativity. The one thought that I thought was *extra* crucial was building in a day or time in the week to help catch up when life gets in the way. Consistency is key but no one is perfect and building that in is a forgiving and thoughtful way to keep yourself honest. I will be taking that away from this video!
    One question on this topic I'd love to see you address in a future video if you think it's interesting - How do you get out of your own head around creativity and just MAKE something? I struggle with this at times, wanting what I make to be good...so I don't make anything at all because as you're making it, you're asking "is it good yet?" "will this be good?" "if it's not good, what's the point?" instead of making to make. creating to create. The act of creativity is a release, a reward in and of itself, but how do you get the self-consciousness of it all out of your head? You clearly make so much creative work in many different areas, you'd be great to hear from on the topic!
    Hope y'all are well! Exciting news about the baby & getting settled with Freja in your new space. Cheers!

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much, and what a great question! Exactly like you said--the ultimate goal isn't to make something in order for it to be good, but rather the process of creation itself. I think the only way to push past those thoughts of "will this be good" etc, which have been so ingrained in us culturally, is really just practice, consistency, gentleness and self-compassion ❤️ Kind of approaching it like meditation! The starting point is to notice when you have those thoughts, and gently remind yourself why you are doing this act of creativity (reminding yourself that you are doing it not for the end product to be "good", but for the enjoyment of the practice itself), and also being compassionate with yourself when you do have those thoughts (so not berating yourself for "missing the point of the exercise" and having those thoughts, but rather gently being aware of those thoughts, knowing it is ok that those thoughts pop up, and reminding yourself you are on a journey not just in creation but, in this case, also in changing how you approach creativity, and with self compassion and understanding that it will take time for those thoughts to not pop up as often. And that it is just your brain asking those questions because we learned as kids that those are important questions to ask, so your brain isn't trying to be mean or distract you, but trying to help you... and that this is a great opportunity to gently teach the brain something new :) A way to gently guide your thoughts away from those "is this good" thoughts is to bring your attention and thoughts back gently and mindfully to the task at hand, noticing the details of the task, the physical sensations of the materials you are using or the sounds that are generated, being in the present with what you are working on :) And being kind to yourself that it will be a lovely process of consistency, gentleness and self compassion to gradually get to a state where you have those thoughts far less often, and really are focused on the task--it is so normal for that not to happen all at once. Just like meditation, which also takes gentleness, compassion and consistency :) Ha hopefully that makes sense, sorry if it's a bit rambley!! Wishing you all the very best with your creative endeavors xxx ❤️

    I did inktober this year, and tried to keep it rolling this month, but being separated from my husband still due to covid and with all the news going up and down all month its just been super hard. Ended up doing a small advent ornament calender for my parents so they get 2 handmade felt ornaments for every sunday before christmas. Always trying to do some sort of project could be anything, I also decided in all the packing of the movingboxes Im shipping, I had to finish my unfinished sketchbooks otherwise I couldnt bring them which def got me through September (and I finish all of them :D) Now just waiting for my visa to go through and Australia to open up for foreign nationals (17 months apart is our longest, then got him smuggled out for a month this summer and now running on 4th month apart and still no news for us.)

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  2 роки тому +1

      Oh wow, that sounds so incredibly tough!! Sending big hugs and lots of love to you both ❤️ The handmade felt calendar sounds SO adorable!!! What a wonderful idea ❤️ And wow, also such an amazing idea to use your move as a motivation to finish the sketchbooks! Sometimes setting a time constraint like that can really unleash the creativity, and pull the focus away from any perfectionist ideas or feeling overwhelmed by something, and back to the actual process of creation :) Great idea. Sending love to you both ❤️

  • @katiegunzenhauser8376
    @katiegunzenhauser8376 2 роки тому

    You are so authentic, Dana. And I didn't realize I needed a video like this until you posted it, so thank you.
    Any chance you can explain #2, the transformation one, again? Is it getting yourself to do something hard to change up your life, or was I misunderstanding it?

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much, Katie, that means so much that this video resonated with you ❤️ And sure thing, what I meant with number 2 -- transformation isn't about needing to make a major life transformation (although I suppose it could eventually lead to that, it doesn't necessarily need to!) :) I meant moreso noticing small transformations as you continue with a creative project or goal. In different words: to notice progress and changes, and appreciate how you have grown and evolved since you started :) For example, for me, that can be pausing after 7 days of a drawing challenge, flipping back to the first day's drawing, and realizing how my drawing skills have improved, or new techniques that I have learned. Maybe the improvement is so "small" that only I could see it, someone else looking at my 7 days of drawings may not--but it's the fact that I can see it and noticing it makes me smile, that's what matters :) And that indication of change and evolution inspires me to keep it up, even on days when motivation is lower. Or, it can be going back to videos of Freja from a month ago and seeing just how far she has come and how much she has learned! Even if she seems so similar to yesterday, if we pull back the zoom to one month ago, you can see how much has changed, transformed, and that gives us more motivation to continue even when things are hard or a doubt creeps in. So, point 2 is not so much about a massive life transformation, as it is about giving yourself the joy of noticing and observing changes and progress (no matter their size), and being motivated by that and inspired to continue :) Hope that makes sense!! Sending lots of love!! xxx
