This video is wonderful - I think it reflects exactly how this sort of week must have felt. It's still lovely and artistic all at the same time, too. I love the snippets with family members and I actually like that the camera is a little outside of the action during those scenes - somehow it's just right.
The moment with you and your Mom, Dana, is precious. A collaboration with your Mom (even one unintended at the outset, is sweet and, truly, Ody travels the world with you.

I have so much gratitude for this channel. I am a female in my 20’s planning on sailing around the world and the comfort, ambition, and creativity I get from your videos is unmatched by any other channel. I’ve grown so attached to watching you guys in the past few years. I have been able to change my outlook on life, develop grit, and learn so much about how to enjoy the day to day through following the examples you lead in your videos. I am forever great full to you for bringing meaning and substance to UA-cam. I hope I can pay it forward someday. If you guys need crew or help doing grunt work, or plan to do a meet up I will most definitely be there.

Hannah!!! I honestly can't express how much your comment means. When we took a week last November to really think about where we are at in our lives, and who we are making content and for and why we were doing this--it was honestly in the hope of inspiring exactly what you just wrote. It truly means so much to read your words, thank you so much for sharing, it's incredibly motivating and thank you for your support following us along 💕🤗 And it's so nice that you want to pay it forward someday. Love and kindness turns into more love and kindness 💕 Sending you our love!!

@@WildWeRoam I'm NOT planning on sailing around the world, I'm quite a bit older than you & Lou & our lives are not very similar.

When you're sailing and going on land, it's easy to have foldable bikes, they can be strapped on the boat and easy for some fasttravel on land. Penelope looks awesome!

The only problem with foldables is salt water. They'll rust like nobody's business if they're steel. Even if you buy a carbon or aluminum one there will be bits and screws that will rust constantly. Need to ideally be kept in a sealed bag or a large rubbermaid or something below deck.

Great progress! If you can try to load all the heavy provisions spares and equipment before launch. It goes so so much faster. And less chance of dropping stuff between dinghy and hull! Dana while you have the sewing machine maybe make up some lee cloths for the bunks for those times when the boat is rolling or weather is rough. You only really need one seabunk as a couple as one of your will be on watch while the other sleeps. Have a wonderful launch!!

Something you might wanna think about getting special while you’re here in the states that you can get pretty cheap at Walmart is one of those collapsing wagons it folds down into a small rectangular block but opens up to a pretty good size wagon you could use when you go to buy groceries at the different ports of call.

OH MY GOSH! The gelcoat looks so darn good for a 45 year old boat. Your Rasmus hull is like new on the outside. Ours is in need of paint or re-gelcoating pretty soon. If we polished ours it would be showing dark spots where it is getting too thin. We already have a few of those beginning to peek out, plus a million chips and scratches. Penelope, however looks like a new boat!
I can't wait to see how the hard bottom coat works for you. We went around and around with the decision but finally chose ablative bottom paint instead. We just hauled SV Barry Duckworth out of the water a couple of days ago for a bottom refresh for the first time after three years of being in the water and perhaps 20k miles of cruising. We were astonished and really happy with the condition of the hull after they power-washed it. We could have gotten away with another year even. All our hard work redoing the bottom from a complete strip and repair paid off. No return of imperfections and small cavities in rhe gelcoat. I hope you have similar results with your hard paint.
You guys are probably back in the water and getting ready to leave the area We will be in the yard for another couple of weeks before heading north again to New York where we will be summering on the Erie Canal.
Your red bottom and blue bootstripe color scheme is almost identical to ours. Penelope is definitely a better-kept example of a Rasmus, both inside and out. You should be very proud of her. We put a lot of work into our bottom 4 years ago and someday the hull and deck will get a similar refresh too. Maybe on our next haulout in a few more years since we are super happy with this facility in Deltaville Virginia. A lot of cruisers use it as it is one of the best DIY yards on the East Coast. If you are still in the US in a couple of years keep it in mind.
Cruising full-time puts a lot of wear and tear on any boat. You are starting from a good place now and should get quite a few more years before needing any major work. But any boat will need to be hauled and worked on every few years to keep it in top shape.
You guys are heros for being able to do such a nice varnish job using chip brushes. I get so frustrated with shedding hairs on those brushes. I try to groom them beforehand and still many shed brush hairs get into the work that need to be picked out during the job. Hopefully you had a supply of better brushes than I have found. I have been buying more expensive brushes lately and cleaning them every time but that is a lot of work and uses a lot of brush-cleaner that has to be disposed of. Either we throw away disposables or use a lot of solvents cleaning the brushes. Boat work is not the most ecologically-friendly activity unfortunately. So many chemicals and waste materials.
I love your Odie pillow. Maybe someday you will have a matching Penelope pillow too. Your mom is very talented.

When I first saw you install your fridge/freezer, I did wonder why you set it down so the lids opened towards you. It meant you would have to lean over further because of the lid to access. But I now see you have done the same. Maybe there is a reason for this. But say for instance in heavy seas you need to access either compartment, having the lid as an obstacle could be a disadvantage.

Hello, hello and greetings from guess what is happening in here- yes another rainy day in Oklahoma! Seriously every Tuesday at the time you drop the video it always starts raining, like a pattern lol, but we believe rain brings good fortune plus it's good for the nature!
We had a similar week friends, I may have mentioned before but we bought a small apartment back home before we got our green cards and we have lived in it for like 1.5 years since we moved in the USA. The apartment is on the 10-12 floor if we count the bottom stores, yes I dislike the height but the view to the mountains is amazing. We do have leeks forming in our kitchen however, and it turns out similar issue. So Stan's brother had to help us fix it. He took away all the old stuff and then cleaned and covered with some silicon, then fiber glass, then he coated with that white stuff and then he coated with something red. So even though the original coverage is missing we now are supposedly to have a leek free ceiling.
What we have to learn in our 30's right :)
I am super exited to see Penelope in her new color! It suits her well!
Dana side question - what kind of tea do you normally make? Is it black, masal? Or other? Also is there a place you get it from? We normally drink green or white tea with some fruit, or cardamom and star annis pods or sichuan peppercorns, but this also looks good. I just wonder for 20 episodes now lol - I know I should have asked earlier right!
By the way my 100 day workout challenge is ending in 7 days thanks to your motivation! And yes at this point it is a routine so I am grateful for you two :)

I'm not sure, but I think they have to be down on boats, because of the constant motion. In an RV, there are latches to keep the fridge door closed, but they do break occasionally, and the fridge door could knock someone out.

I'm not sure I understand the ergonomic intention of facing the fridge toward the wall with the controls buried facing the other wall. I would have faced it toward the table so one doesn't have to reach over the lids and the controls are easily viewed/operated from the aisle. That being said, the wooding looks excellent as does Penelope's hull!
Keep up the excellent work and above all, STAY SAFE! ⛵❤️😷

They put it in that way so the fridge could vent out to where Lou built the vents in the wooden frame instead of it getting over heated on the other side facing the haul of the boat. ☺️

I also think that doors won't stay open against the wall because they can't extend out all the way

@@nocturn1ts I’m pretty sure Dana said at one time they could put a cushion or something on top of the fridge so they could have more space to sit if needed. Even if there is enough room to vent against the haul, the lid would not stand all the way open against the way to be able to get materials out without holding it open. Lou and Dana have been very methodical when fixing up their boat so I’m sure they took in all options when they redesigned the space.
If you actually watch their other videos, they always are explaining everything they do. And if you don’t like the fridge that way, it’s not your boat. It’s not hard to ask a question in a respectful manner and not put down others while doing so.

@@nocturn1ts You seem really annoyed for some reason. I'm not sure why you feel they need to explain themselves to your satisfaction, but I think the wood panel above the fridge would stop the lid opening all the way.

I know you said you are done varnishing but there will be more. Varnishing and painting can only be done really well, when one uses good brushes. It looks like you used one of the “throw-away” brushes. Those really are only suitable for primer or a paint job somewhere that won’t be seen. You guys are doing a great job but in many cases, using a better tool results in an even better job that can be done quicker. I enjoy your videos and they closely follow the kind of tasks I have been doing on my own boat. Good luck with your upcoming splash! Cheers, Rog

Those are really helpful tips, thank you so much, Rog!!! That really is a great rule of thumb--"using a better tool results in an even better job that can be done quicker". Thank you for taking the time to write this kind comment, and we wish you so many great adventures with your boat, too!! Cheers 💕🤗

Omg Dana You can‘t believe how reliefed i am right now. I‘m getting my Covid Vaccine in 2 Weeks and i was very happy, but after some discussions with my cousin, who is very worring about getting vaccinated i got a little bit in worry too. Even though i don‘t believe this crazy secondary effect she told me. To now that people that i admire and look up to are getting vaccinated too, makes me more calm and not worring anymore! Thank you so much for sharing this tiny but so important information! Thank you with all my heart ❤️
Stay Safe you guys and i am looking forward to see you with penelope in the water! ❤️

I’m not an electrician but I know that you don’t just change out electrical parts (that breaker Lou switched) without confirming it is safe and that those wires can carry the extra load safely. If not, you can start an electrical fire.

I don't think they said, but I think it was probably because one end of the fridge needs a LOT of ventilation so it had to be that way.

If your boat is documented thru the Coast Guard you will need to change the hailing port on your Certificate of Documentation. If you don't you will have trouble checking into foreign countries that you will be visiting. Nice Video.

Switching out a 5A breaker for a 20A breaker without making sure the wiring can handle it is incredibly dangerous.
