As an addendum to the original issue of misfires. Many times with a new gun I will strip it down and re-lube everything. I did not do it with my 93 17hmr. I began getting light strikes and misfires. I thought to myself, SHIT! I have to send it back. Remembering I did not clean this gun I took the bolt out and soaked it in some light cleaner, then I re-lubed it with Ballistol. I took the 93HMR out yesterday, I shot 60 rounds without a misfire and what's more interesting, not a single cracked neck. The brass now is being struck really hard and the firing pin sounds more sharp when I pull the trigger.
Of course the 2 problems are totally separate issues.
If you have 17hmr ammo that has cracked necks get ahold of Hornady, they will make you step over a few obstacles but they will send you new ammo. I had 2,000 rounds and I was not going to shoot the stuff if it was going to crack.

A useful safety tip to remember is if you get a misfire of any kind ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS VISUALLY CHECK the bore is CLEAR before you load another round into the chamber. I was on the skeet range with a friend who had a misfire on his O/U 12 bore and he went to reload and i stopped him and made him check the barrel and sure enough there was the wad stuck about half way up the barrel. Remember the next guy who reloads without checking might be standing next to you

Great video set.....I had split case problems with my Savage 917 VRX. No mis-fire issues, but lots of split cases. I was looking for a chambering/seating problem, but after watching both videos, I opened a sealed box of Winchester Varmit HV / 17 HMR / 17 Grain / 2550 FPS / Polymer Tip V-Max. 5 out of 10 "brand new" unfired cases had neck splits (faint but still there). It's DEFINITELY the Ammo !!! I feel better about the gun now, but the Ammo Manufacturers have some work to do !!!!! Thanks Again !!!! I think Chuck G found the answer below. Thanks Chuck !!

Thanks for posting. I have a 93R17. Although it was purchased 7 years ago, I fired it for the first time yesterday (4/23/2021). I had all the same problems you describe plus one. I had several misfires and simply ejected them and fired the next. However, I had a misfire on my second to last shot. I cycled the bolt (keeping my cheek weld). The misfired round ejected and the next round fed just fine. On the last pull of the trigger the gun literally "blew up." Blew the bottom of the magazine out as well as blowing the whole magazine out of the well along with the bottom metal taking the stripped screws with it. The stock split top to bottom from the forearm back through the pistol grip. Upon inspection of the ejected round I discovered the bullet was missing but the case was still full of powder. So, even though the round did not fire...(and I'm not talking about a light or "squib" load...I mean it did not ignite at all), for some reason the bullet must have remained in the chamber and the next round fed right in behind it. After watching your videos I inspected my fired brass as well as remaining ammo. Out of 15 fired rounds 12 of them are split. So far I have found several split cases in the unfired ammo as well. I thought about sending the rifle to Savage and I thought about just buying another rifle but in the end, Like you, I have decided the .17 HMR is not for me. I'll find other toys to play with.

@@TheOutdoorGeneralist I sent my rifle to Savage. It was about a 5 week wait but they repaired it and returned it to me free of charge. However, there was no paperwork at all describing what they did. It does seem like the bolt is a bit tighter on lock up than it was. I also contacted Hornady and spoke to a very nice, knowledgeable rep about the ammo. I told him the lot# and he said that the ammo was manufactured in 2003 (18 years old!) and that Hornady's warranty, even though the best in the industry, is only 10 years. I said I didn't see how that was possible because the shop I purchased it from wasn't even in business until 2009..He suggested maybe they took the ammo in on a trade or maybe a distributor sent them some old ammo but, in any case, the lot numbers don't lie. He explained that CCI produces all the.17 HMR brass for all the ammo manufacturers and the split cases were a well known problem. As you know the 17 is made by neck sizing 22 mag brass. This neck sizing work hardens the brass. The problem is that the sizing is done AFTER the priming mixture is in place so, therefore, the brass cannot be annealed because of the heat required. Forgive me for not remembering all the details but he said that at some point (I think he said after 2009) CCI did come up with a process of softening the brass to try and eliminate the problem. Even so the brass can harden over time no matter how it's stored so he recommended checking every round for cracks. He said the easy way he does this is by simply pressing the bullet tip of each cartridge against a table before loading it. If the bullet slides back into the case, you know the neck is split. Anyway, he said that since I had no way of knowing how old the ammo was when I bought it, to send it to them and they would replace it, which they did. I have since fired 100 rounds of the new ammo with not a single split neck and with greatly improved accuracy. I had several older boxes of ammo from other manufactures which I disposed of. I have since purchased a Boyd's AT-One stock for the 93R17 and absolutely love it!

I had this exact same issue with a Browning T bolt. Gun is f****d, I however was fine thankfully. I’m in the uk and the ammo issue is the same, there has been a real bad lot from the factory that makes most 17 rounds, and it is not down to the gun, it’s poor ammo. I was told by the range guys that it has been common, and the necks split (before firing) which can allow the powder to get damp and not burn. The primer is enough to puff the light bullet out just far enough to enable the shooter to chamber another, then bang. There are warning signs, a click or small puff sound rather than the 17 crack as it goes supersonic, but if your on a busy range with .308’s next to you it can be hard to decipher which bangs are from which trigger pull. 🤔
Glad you were ok, it’s good Savage fixed the gun, I was told by a couple of gunsmiths that my Browning was not economically worth repairing.

I have the same rifle, stainless, left hand with thumb hole stock. It started out as a tack driver and with use had extraction problems, severely split cases and poor accuracy. The ammo I agree is a major problem but when the rifle went from good to bad my findings differ. I took the fired case's to work and used a comparator to see the difference between fired and new, the deformation was very pronounced and my conclusion is head spacing from worn lock up surface. I will also sell and or trade up on the rifle, very disappointed with Savage and an almost universal problem with this product.

I found out from Hornady what the real problem is. CCI makes ALL the 17hmr brass. When they make the brass they begin with 22 mag brass, they insert the ignition compound - then they neck the case down, at that point after neck sizing they cannot anneal the cases. Because the cases are worked and without them being able to anneal them you end up with cracks.
I had 1,200 rounds, shot like crap, 20 out of each 50 were cracked. I sent the 1,200 to hornady, 5 weeks later I got them exchanged for newer stuff. I took two boxes of 50 and ended up with zero splits. Now I need to get out and shoot some.

. CCI Ammunition loads all of the .17 HMR ammunition for the CCI, Federal Cartridge, Hornady, and Remington brands. However, the ammunition is loaded with different bullets to different specifications. Winchester ammunition is not loaded by CCI. That pretty much explains your problem or at least most of the problem. Most all of the split cases came from ammunition produced on the CCI assembly line. But, I believe (I'll have to watch your video again) you did have one or two Winchester split cases. Winchester ammunition is not produced on the CCI assembly line. So the problem may be a bit more completed than my CCI production ammunition theory. I have a Savage 93 (without accu trigger) In my safe. I purchased it new around 2003, maybe 2004. Unfortunately, I have never fired it. I am going to shoot my savage now that I have seen this video. I have several boxes of ammunition (all produced by CCI but with various brand names) in 15., 17, and 20-grain bullet weights. All are new unopened boxes. I am going to inspect all of my ammunition right now to see if I have any split cases. If I find any split cases I will immediately contact CCI. I emphatically recommend that you contact CCI too. Thanks for this informative video. It is unfortunate that you had to break this news to your viewers.
