  • In this video I'll show you two variations on the only way I have ever and will ever plant my tomatoes for a huge tomato harvest out of my organic garden and small space garden. It is an easy way to grow tomatoes in a raised bed or in the ground.
In this video I show you 6 ways to prevent and treat earwig attack! I go through organic methods of prevention, companion planting, and pesticides.

If you lay the longer tomato plants out in your garden on their sides (still in the cup) a day or so ahead of time, the plant tip will naturally start to bend upwards. Then when you plant them in the trench, you don't have to bend the stem because the plant has already done it.

@@NextLevelGardening zone 4a here in south central Montana. We are slowly coming out of a cold snap since almost a week with 7 inches of snow. My rain barrels are all full and spare buckets the same. Toms are crying to be planted as are squash. May not be able to get going till around June 2 or 3 this year. Then we prepare for hail storms before end of the month. Crazy weather this year for sure. Cheers, all you lucky growers everywhere it's warm enough to plant. Bob

Hello from Sweden! My husband and I built our first raised garden (12 beds!) and we've learned so much from your tutorials and really enjoy watching your videos - your chicken coup is amazing! Something that would make your show even more enjoyable (and informative) is if you included the metric conversions for temp and measurements. I appreciate the bulk of your audience is in the US but your international audience would be ever so grateful 🙂

Brian, I am in Zone 7b and I just planted some tomatoes two weeks ago, some two days ago, and still have some to be planted. The ones I planted in 5 gallon buckets I tried one of your techniques. I filled the buckets 2/3rds of the way up and planted my tomatoes. Now that they have grown over the top of the bucket I will take off leaves, add more soil, and put on my homemade cages. So far so good.

You are now the only gardening UA-camr I follow. Your advice has shown its value in that my tomatoes are already flowering and growing faster than I have ever seen them as a result of your planting and fertilizing tips. If I could post a week over week change these past 3 weeks you too would be amazed! Many thanks. My wife and I are looking forward to a bumper crop this year.

One important thing for every gardener is I think to collect seeds from all kinds of vegetables since some countries bann selling seeds from old type of vegetables that people grew for centuries that don't give enough fruits. Long time ago most people shared their seeds with their neighbours for free while most people now are dependent on industry with limited type of vegetables where you cannot find older types.

Zone 4....frost tonight. I have 3 sungold cherry toms in growbags, they can sleep in the sunroom tonight. I won't put the Lemon Boys or Big Beef toms in the ground until ~ June 10. I had to plant out 3 tomatillos in one of the raised beds last week because I needed the space indoors to start my squash and mini melons. I'll double layer frost blanket them and hope for the best. I have 6 more as backups. Gardening up here is like drag racing. We're all at the starting line, revving and raring to go......but we have to be patient and wait for the green. Too many false starts and we're frozen toast.....when we finally get the GO we run through the gears like MAD! Then, in a blink of an eye, the season/race is over. It's the end of August and the frost warnings have returned.

Great information. An even better idea is to use a container like where powder coffee creamer comes in and mix your fertilizer in it. You can then use it as a salt shaker to place the fertilizers in the holes. It’s sooo much easier and convenient. I got that idea from the TNOG. I absolutely love it.

Why not dig a sloped trench (deeper on one end) and put the root ball in the deep end? That way you get the advantage of depth for consistent moisture and less need for bending at the top.

I had a feeling you were going to trench the large tomato plant! I saw Ray from Praxxis 55712 do something similar. He pruned his tomato plant from the top to encourage side growth while still in the pot. Once it put out side growth, he planted it in the middle of his garden and spread the 4 branches out in trenches, and ended up with 4 plants! Tomatoes are amazing! :D

I use your first method when I have a deep enough situation but if I have a shallow situation (i.e. a shallow pot) then I use your second method. Hi Brian,
Congratulations on the new house. I have learned a lot from your videos over the past 3 years. Thank you.
I live in Tampa, Florida. We get a lot of rain in the summer. There are times when it is time to feed the tomatoes and peppers with liquid fertilizer in between the granular fertilizer (I keep a schedule), however, the soil is already saturated. How do I apply the liquid fertilizer (fish emulsion, Neptune's, etc) then? Do I "just do it"? What advice do you have for me? Thank you.

OMG! We have struggled for years to grow anything, our dirt is so awful. We mostly gave up. But after watching a few of your videos, we now have 4 cucumber plants in 2 small raised beds, tomatoes in large pots, potatoes in Lowe's buckets, rosemary, basil, lettuce, cilantro, parsley, oregano and chives! My husband is even giving cantelope and corn a container try! We have had problems with germinating cherry tomato seeds. We tried SunGold and Tidy Treats...... no luck. We are having the most luck with Kellogg's Breakfast (thank you for the recommendation!) and Galahad. Could use a little help with our orange trees. Our lemon tree is a real trooper, but we planted 2 orange trees next to the lemon about 6 years ago (a Valencia and a Cara-Cara from Green Acres and they were pricey!) and they have sure been slow to grow and develop. This year one of the orange trees actually flowered, but all the flowers fell off and we have no fruit developing. I put hundreds of worms in the ground about 10 years ago, hoping they'd improve the soil over time, and of course we do fertilize everybody a couple of times a year.

On vacation later this year I should be able to collect crab shells right off the beach. What do you think about using those crushed up? Any concerns about possible contaminants?

I am behind some, besides Alaskan/Polar Vortex, seed shortage and weird weather and sun this year plus a 90 degree day. My tomatos seem stunted a bit.

Interesting tip re trenching tomatoes! You're the first person I have ever seen doing that. See what I mean when I said on the otr video, no matter how many of these vids you put out there's always something new to learn😃
