Put the alcohol in a travel, continuous spray bottle. Then just spray your shears in between cuts. It’s the quickest way I have found. Small enough to keep the bottle in your pocket as you travel around the garden.
Yes!Yes!Yes!!! And I've been told that these starts from suckers will produce fruit that the seeds from will germinate, no matter if they've been genetically altered or not. (Slick way to get rid of GMO)

I used to have a mix of ground and container tomatoes due to living in a small house (townhouses) so I let grow my suckers about 1 feet and cut and put in my then 1 gallon container (milk bottles) and it was a pain the watering, but I had so many tomatoes, later I put inside in October by the glass door while I see the outside tomatoes dying, I had tomatoes producing plants into January and the tomatoes lasted after pruning until the next spring...but we moved and somehow I stopped, but this old house really do not have any decent window to put plants and not glass door, I think this is the reason, but I have 2 acres land...

Hey James. Another great video and one that I need. I’m wondering what you do with all the tomatoes you produce. Freeze, can, etc. I’m just amazed at your beautiful garden and all grow. You have a nice size yard …. So awesome ! ❤
For indeterminate variety tomatoes: 1. Prune plants to a single stem to train and support vertically. Pruned plants produce about 2 weeks earlier than unpruned. 2. Prune suckers, but in especially hot climates you might want to allow some to grow out to provide some extra shade protection to tomatoes. 3. For the suckers allowed to grow, prune them back to the point just after any flowers produced, so that you maximize airflow and sunlight while getting some extra production. Health and production tips for all tomato varieties: 1. Be sure to clean pruners with alcohol before use to prevent disease spread and help coagulate pruning cuts quicker. 2. Choose varieties mindfully. For more production, mix varieties that grow early along with ones that grow late into the season. You’ll find that both some hybrids and heirlooms will grow better for you than others. You can identify your best growers over time and fine tune your garden in the future to those varieties that grow best for you. 3. Sunlight and air are the enemies of disease. Remove any dried or diseased leaves to prevent disease spread and increase sunlight and airflow. 4. Use a thick organic mulch to keep a consistent level of soil moisture, reduce chance of blossom end rot, and combat weeds. 5. Top dress soil around tomato plants with a balanced or higher potassium (not nitrogen) fertilizer when they head into production to give the plant some additional food at this time. Water in fertilizer and then cover the soil back up with mulch. 6. Water tomato plants at the base. Aim to keep plants’ leaves dry to prevent disease. Plants can put more energy to fruit production when they are fighting less disease and dealing with less unnecessary leaf production.

Pruning is necessary, yes. I would add this: twin your plants to have two main trunks. Treat those like two plants, continuing to sucker and tie them up as necessary. The yield was 8% more by weight. I compared singles to doubles, planted in the same place. The possible drawback, depending on the grower's purpose, is that twinned plants tend to yield the mature fruits in a tighter time window. If growing to process, this is a good thing. Also, be sure to shut your plants off from further growth, about 3-4 weeks ahead of your anticipated end of season. This is done by heading all leads that are actively growing, removing all flowers, and all tiny fruits that will not have enough time to develop.
Yes. In addition, I am happy once in a while to have a second stem because the primary stem breaks, eg due to wind, my clumsy fingers or something like the hail storm last week that severely damaged my garden. But with 2-3 stems, even when one is gone, the plant keeps producing. :)
This is the best show of yours that I've seen, and I've seen many. A serious show, without too much excitement, calmly, carefully told, everything explained, a real educational episode. I have not yet found a better explanation of growing tomatoes in the garden on UA-cam. Thanks, I enjoyed it.
Great job👏👏 the little boss, picking and eating veggies from the vine is hilarious, as you said. What a sweetie! Your Love and Passion are all over the garden! Keep the passion, It's seeing God in the first sprout from seed. The first fruits of Spring and in every leaf🙏

Love the next-level advice for those of us intermediate-level tomato growers. Particularly love the explanation about knowing the rules to "break the rules" to your advantage to grow more fruit. And thank you too, Tuck, for all the adorableness.
I love how you've learned that the sucker is totally your friend. They produce amazingly if you learn to control them. I have a few suckers growing up each string and then allow suckers to form a new set or three of flowers before stopping it. It seriously lets you max out a tight area.

I have benefitted so much from watching all your videos! Keep them coming! 3yrs. ago on my first attempt at growing tomatoes and peppers was a disaster and resulted in 12' plants and no fruit. Last year after following your videos, my tomato plants thrived and fruit production increased 20 fold

Thanks guys, my old Jack would would keep me company in my garden too. Now I have an Australian Kelpie that let's me know when my tomatoes are flowering....with sneezes. Thanks for good info on pruning. I WILL be paying attention to that more this year.
A trick for huge production if you don't have many plants is to use a vibrating toothbrush. If you have one give the fruiting stems a quick buzz with the backside of it. It shakes the pollen from the male part of the flower to the female part and guarantees pollination. Went from a good amount via pollinating bugs to literally every flower growing a tomato. Mine are growing like grapes this year! Another tip so you don't waste time is pollen goes bad when the daytime temps are over 90 AND the nighttime temperatures don't drop below 70 or so (Probably google this lol).
I live in a high Blight risk area in the UK, and grow all my Tomatoes outside. in 2021 Blight tore through our area, even for those growing inside, yet out of all the varieties I was growing Barry's Crazy Cherry, and Brad's atomic Grape were not hit. They both carried on until frosts wiped them out. This year I have the three new varieties from Brad, along with some of his others in my garden, and we've had storms for a month, with no change forecast for the next two weeks. They're certainly getting put through it! Lovely trusses you have there on your plants.
Thank you James! You are so good, knowledgeable and a great teacher! I appreciate you and what your doing for the gardening community! Sweet Tuck too!🥰
I am learning a lot and my garden is getting much better. I will apply the lessons I am getting about the varieties for my next season. I believe the climate here in MD is similar to yours, so I am benefiting from your videos greatly, thank you.
I live in a very short summer growing season (zone 4/zone 5a) and I always let 1 or 2 suckers about a foot up the main stem to grow, and reduce suckers all up the main stem. I also let suckers that are larger than 7 inches just grow because usually if I missed it for that long, they’ve already set flowers and no need to waste all the energy that went into producing the flowers. I’ve also snipped the tops of all growing ends come mid-September so the rest of the energy is put into growing/ripening the fruit that’s already on the plant. In Oct, we might get a frost. I usually wait until the day of the first frost to go out and just pick EVERYTHING and let them ripen in cardboard boxes.
Hi guys. When I first started watching your videos I was blown away by your garden production. My Roma Tomatoes are starting to get light in color. You are adding nutrients now. I was about to make a mistake and not give my Roma's and peppers a boost. Thank you James and hugs for Tuck. ❤❤❤❤
I wondered also, but they have been getting regular and abundant rain unlike many of us. Plus Jersey is very humid. We’ve had extreme drought all summer up to July 12th. Installed irrigation on the 11th and it rained😂
The deep mulch helps keep in moisture, so the need for watering is lessened. He talks about this around 8:00 and in other videos. I urge caution if you have any Bermuda grass. It will grow like crazy!
I’m certainly going to try these tips. So many professionals in Qld Australia say growing anything larger than a cherry tomato is impossible. You’ve given me some great varieties to try. Brad’s Atomic Grape, WOW! Keeping Tools super clean…the basics I forget. Cheers for the reminder.👍🙏🇦🇺
I’m in the coal fields in qld and I thought the same - turns out if you plant out seedlings in Feb/March you can get beefsteak and ox hearts etc in the middle of winter (admittedly I’m on the border between arid frost zone and tropical zone where the rain is super inconsistent). This year I have a mortgage lifter that’s been fruiting since mid May
What herbs are you growing? I feel theyre one of the best gardening investments because of high prices in grocery stores and ease of growth. Also added bonus of strong aromas. Would love a video on just herbs in the food forest.
Most of them, all scattered around. Thyme, oregano, basil, lemon balm, mint, sage, etc. You are right they are suer high value and also great pollinators and great beneficials in general. Super plants!
Your plants are incredibly healthy looking. I thought mine were doing well, but this is next level. You've inspired me to figure out how to do that in my garden. Thanks :)
The ethanol in the iso (rubbing Alcho) is a PGR as well telling the fruit to ripen quicker. I leave a bottle with the lid open in my green house just before the first frost for the same reason "no green tomatoes for me"
Wow! My 1st time to see and listen to your knowledge on Tomatoes 🍅. Yes , I caught a couple of your tips to apply immediately. 😊. Yes , this is my 1st tomato plant to grow. I shall continue to watch and learn. Thanks.
I’m growing two 2 cherry tomatoes and 3 beefsteaks up a sting trellis this year because of your videos I saw from your “Tomato tree” video and as long as you have height to do so it’s awesome. I have so many fruits that are already getting close to harvest down low while there is still more then enough fruit getting bigger up top. On the cherries I let some suckers grow strategically and top them so they don’t get to big while letting the main stem grow. This way also seems to be really good agains pests.
I really enjoy all your videos you put on utube over the years. I love gardening because you continue to learn your every new season. Keep up your hard work. Happy growing everyone ✌️🌎
I love that you showed more of Tuck in this video!😁 Your vids are always so informative & I really enjoy watching Boss Tuck going around the garden & snacking on vegs, he's so funny 😊🐾❤
I’ve been considering not Gardening this year. You’ve about got convinced to jump in again. I’ve never had a good Gardn since we moved to central Oklahoma. I’m from Illinois farm country where just about anything grows with a normal amount of effort. The gets hot here with not much rain but that isn’t the worst thing. It’s the constant wind. I guess I’ll give it another and keep watching you and Tuck for encouragement. If you’ve got any suggestions for growing in this climate. I’m all ears. Ty for your video. I enjoyed it so much. Franci
I thought I was being overly paranoid cleaning my pruners between each plant and often each cut. I have a little spray bottle that I hang outta my pocket with a long twistie tie and tomato spring clips.
I love how happy you are in your garden and your smile. And what a cutie Tucker is. I sure hope I can do this and produce some more tomatoes. I am a newbie and need all the help I can get.
Wish your sweet yorkie could sit at table in hi chair with kids around to see him eating veggies....maybe it might encourage the kids that veg are great after all. 😅😅😅
I've been trying the same techniques and have been getting the biggest tomatoes ever!!! Also allowing some suckers to grow but capping the height of my plant to allow more of a bush style. I pinch the leaves that grow with the flowers and any surrounding new leaves to only have the flowers. That sends all the energy to the tip of the plant into the flowers which turn into tomatoes. I have never done the alcohol and pruners, I always pinch or prune by hand. Something I shall try.
Hi James and Tuck. We watch from Northwest Missouri. We love your videos... They are very informative and have really helped us and... "we always get something out of it!". I'm sure you've been asked a number of times but who is behind the camera? Just curious. Keep them coming! Give Tuck a scratch and a rub from us.
I planted late and temps are in the 100s. Keeping tomatoes watered and fertilized. I have only had 3 tomatoes that were not great. Blossoms but no fruiting on nine plants. I will try your methods. Thanks for all the great info you put out! Wish I had a garden even 10% as productive as yours!
Wonderfully informative video. I live in Kerala,India and have grown tomatoes but have difficulty in getting them to fruit properly. Now you have enlightened me on how to prune them. I remove the suckers from my tomato plants and grow them into a separate plant by putting them into a bottle of water. After sometime they put down roots and grow quite well as a clone!
I am so glad I watched your video, I didn’t know about pruning indeterminate vs determinate. I also love your bamboo poles for tomato stakes and the tomato clips. I use bamboo tripods in my whiskey barrels for growing cucumbers and tomatoes. Tuck is the best!
This is my first attempt to growing a garden. So i am greener than my veggies haha I been watching you to be ready for seasons coming up. Love watching you. Im in zone 8 9. I hope these tomatoes grow here. Thank for your help. I have another crazy can i put dried grass clipping on my plant instead of leaves
Awesome James! I'm trying a lot of your techniques and I'm having my best year as well! The one thing I do different is hugelkulture in a bag. I have 30 gallon felt bags. I put sticks on the bottom, then wood chips, then straw then hay, then dirt. The first year sucked, but this year it's awesome! At the end of the season I clean out my chicken house and fill the bags up with that. This year I have all the bags mulched on top with wood chips, and I only water once a week! We have had 2 rainy days this summer. It's super dry. My neighbors are watering every day. Thanks for the great ideas! Thanks Tuck, for being a great boss!
SAW YOU ON AN INTERVIEW TODAY... Although I have been watching you for awhile now, a video came up on the feed that yu were being interviewed on your property... I started to watch you when a video popped up on the you tube feed... You look my nephew.. So I started to watch.. But THEN... King Tuck, your human was so infectious with his joy and kindness. I wish tomato season was just starting. The information was new to me. My tomatoes blistered in the hot Texas sun. I did put them under shade cloth but now no blooms! What’s up with that? They’re indeterminate and huge bushy things. Anyway, I love you little King Tuck. See you next video ❤

James has the 91% isopropyl there. It is flammable. The 71% strength is not, as long as the vapors are not concentrated.
With the paper cup or plastic cup you can re-use the alcohol and do not evaporate fast.
Agreed , and it uses much less than pouring alcohol in a new cup every time . I also use a touch of detergent to break the bacteria FASTER.

I just shake the stems with blossoms whenever I go by, and it self polinates just fine.
😂just shake the plant😂
@@RTG-FAMILY I have. But this works better.
I have learned so much today. I did feel alone and confused but I just need the right foundation of plots, soil and best plant and restart there.
Sweet Tuck too!🥰
James, thanks for always being so positive! You are awesome!
You're welcome @Edustakaa, and thank you for being so kind and encouraging to me and the little boss!
I watch A LOT of gardening vids and you and Tuck are by far my favorite sir!! I learn so much from you. Thank you ❤
Thank you - my garden is off timing wise this year - no tomatoes yet - im in zone 6b. Thank you Thank you Tuck !
I'm in 6b as well, no tomatoes yet either
5a here, no tomatoes
St.Louis here...past 2 weeks tomatoes have kicked in !!
TOTALLY love this gardening community youve built!!! I'm learning so much...thank you!!!
❤❤❤❤
Love all your videos, your enthusiasm, and Tuck! Thank you for all that you do.
James, how do you handle watering in your big spread out garden? Would love to know!
I wondered also, but they have been getting regular and abundant rain unlike many of us. Plus Jersey is very humid. We’ve had extreme drought all summer up to July 12th. Installed irrigation on the 11th and it rained😂
@@dustyflats3832 of course it did lol
The deep mulch helps keep in moisture, so the need for watering is lessened. He talks about this around 8:00 and in other videos. I urge caution if you have any Bermuda grass. It will grow like crazy!
I like watching your videos , I’m a beginner and I’ll learned a lot from you especially with the tomatoes 🍅
This year I have a mortgage lifter that’s been fruiting since mid May
Oh and bonus flipping the season this way reduces the pest pressure by 80%
I love the knowledge and how you appreciate your little doggy❤
James, thank you for this! I don't think I ever really considered sterilizing the pruners. Will do so from now on! Blessings and love to you and Tuck.
Thank you, this is the most comprehensive and detailed video on growing tomatoes that I have ever found!
I leave a bottle with the lid open in my green house just before the first frost for the same reason "no green tomatoes for me"
There’s no ethanol in most rubbing alcohols. Most rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol. Maybe isopropyl promotes ripening too?
James, thank you for all….and TUCK for sure needs a STAR - he is by far HOLLYWOOD material.
Hello James and tuck ,❤I saw your brads atomic grape tomatoes win a taste test in the UK on a u tube video ,I'm about to grow it ,I'm excited!
Love that you are so enthusiastic about your garden! Hope you and Tucker enjoy your cucumbers and tomatoes!😀😎
My tomatoes are growing like crazy thanks to your pruning advice, thanks James!! 💖💖💖
Wow... thanks for sharing ❤. I'm watching from 🇳🇬 Nigeria
Love this channel!
Triple digits here and I am really looking forward to the fall so I can apply all this great info.
Thanks!
Let's Gooo! Thanks for the generous contribution @VocaZ , it means a lot to me and the little boss! 🐕😁
I think he’s cute!
I love your veggies! And Tuck for helping you keep your garden growing. 🤣🤣❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for your help.
Texas, and other states where it gets over 100 during the summer need to use 40% shade cloth.
Thanks from new Mexico
I use 30% just south of Birmingham Alabama.
Sending love ,truth never damages a cause that is just, did you watched this live on TV show?
Wish your sweet yorkie could sit at table in hi chair with kids around to see him eating veggies....maybe it might encourage the kids that veg are great after all. 😅😅😅
Ikr 😂
That’s such a good idea!
Love little Tuck!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ He's such a good helper
Would love to see some grafting of heirloom tomato scions onto disease-resistant rootstock.
I did that last year actually 😁
@@jamesprigioniJames could you tell a big difference? I have considered doing this but didn't know if it would make a huge difference. Thanks!
I am learning so much from your videos and I’m thankful I found your channel!! Hugs ❤to Tuck
Make sure you keep heirloom tomatoes
Absolutely!
So i am greener than my veggies haha
I been watching you to be ready for seasons coming up.
❤Thank You , Tuck and You have changed my life and iam gardening again for the first time in years.
SAW YOU ON AN INTERVIEW TODAY... Although I have been watching you for awhile now, a video came up on the feed that yu were being interviewed on your property... I started to watch you when a video popped up on the you tube feed... You look my nephew.. So I started to watch.. But THEN... I started to really love your personality, you are kind of quirky, and I like that. I just happened to be a gardener as well so that was an added bonus and really have received some good tips from you. So YEH I find myself watching your videos quite often.
Send my love to the big boss of the garden! Thanks for a lot of wonderful garden tips!
Im a very new gardner, just less than four months new. With that said, it would have been nice to see what diseased leaves look like. Ty. Btw, im in Naples, florida, 10A, and you are one of my favorite utube people that I follow to learn from . Thank you, you're amazing. By the way, I always imitate your entrance " Let's Go ", lol, I love it !!
Good way to plant tomatoes you have taught me a lot thanks for sharing my friend you and Tuck ❤
Love the enthusiasm and great tomato growing tips. Subscribed.
Wonderful tomatoes!! I wish I had a list of your best varieties so I can grow them too!!
What great information, definitely going to try some of the tips you presented. As always, love Tuck❤
I have put grow bags under our old basketball goal and put strings up to grow tomatoes and peppers. Works great!
I'm a new gardener and I have learned so much from you. Thank you!
Whatttssss up James! Thanks for sharing your tips on growing tomatoes!! I started mine late this year and I really needed these tips!💚🙌
Real good ideas
I'm going to grow more tomatoes this year, these tips encourage me! Thanks! I'll let you know what happens!

Great information all useful tips to grow all varieties setting up your beds early or first best advise I can give - I recommend indeterminate tomatoes myself....and a decent method to train up your plants again before you plant. I living in Philippines with great weather so looking forward to growing lotsa new varieties...
