I've grown tomatoes for 40 years....plant them deep and let them grow and take over the garden. I never heard of pruning. Pruning makes so much sense because I've always had a lot of plant and not tomatoes. Thank you so much!
I have depression and anxiety that I fight and you help me with your videos! I wake up and watch them and they help me feel so much better! Gardening is my passion and I'm so excited to learn. You are the best teacher!
I've seen the pros use the vertical growing method, but Never knew HOW they attached the string to the base. I came to your channel by accident. Seriously HOOKED now. I will be modifying my tomato setup this year. Oh.. And Great Job on the How, and Why.
Same method of pruning if plants are in containers, Brian? Heaven bless you for all the help you have given. My tomatoes are doing beautifully! They are all heirloom, open-pollinated, non gmo. I have to tell you how I found a paper plate filled with stuck on tomato seed. It said, organic tomato, September, 2011. My other half thought I was a little nutty because I moistened an unbleached paper towel and tested for germination. Only two of about 40 seeds failed to germinate. The plants are just beautiful and hardy. Some have main stem as thick as my forefinger. I gave some away because my dear one thinks I am nuts! . I have a very good feeling about my mystery variety because I would not have bothered saving them unless the fruit really impressed. I also have Roma, Amish Paste, Heirloom Blend, Rutgers, San Marzano and Beefsteak. Ok, it's a good crazy, right! Take care and keep the info coming!
Jocelyn Bennewies I would be very happy to share. I am so grateful that all the seed germinated so wondrously. I have seed saved from the 2011 growing season that I bought from St Clare Heirloom Seed Co. out of Wisconsin. They give instructions on storing for longer viability. Some of my 2011 are no longer viable but because of the success of the mystery variety I have confidence seed stored properly has a longer shelf life than expected except in some seed such as onion. Watching things grow is pure enjoyment in my humble opinion. Don't know how it could be done exactly. Maybe a seed savers exchange? I would not consider doing it for profit. Only for contributing to saving and distributing heirloom seed. Having heirloom seed in our day is an insurance policy.
Ambrose McLaren I am new to this and travelled to Spain and Italy in the last year. While there I tried hard to get some of their seeds with no GMO and was unsuccessful. I even went to their out door markets in search of some. No luck. When I read of your post I was so excited. I would love to have even a few to start my own with. Like you I have been watching this video and have just started my first garden. I did an above ground in a cattle trough. I am hopeful. But would love some seeds from a none GMO seed garden. If you could help with this for my next years garden I would be truly thankful. I live in Stratford Ontario.
Jocelyn Bennewies I am in Western MI, so not far. Idk the rules about mailing seed to Canada but will find out. My brother buys organic vegetables just for the seed. He bought a spaghetti squash recently and cut and removed the seed right away and planted some. He said the plants were 4 inches high before they finished eating the squash. Used to cross the border quite a bit when living on Eastside of MI. There are still wonderful little roadside stands or were eight years ago. Don't know about Ontario as I was in Winsdor. You may find quite nice heirloom vegetables to save seed. I have had wonderful fortune just allowing many vegetables to stay on the plant until very overripe. Seed can then be harvested. I will get back to you on this thread later as the season progresses. I wish you a very blessed gardening year with much success!
Jocelyn, there are no GMO tomatoes grown anywhere in the world. So any tomato seeds you find including open pollinated and hybrids, are non GMO. For Canadian sources for heirloom varieties of tomatoes, you can check out Incredible Seed Co in Nova Scotia and Heritage Harvest Seed in Manitoba. I bought tomato seeds from both of these companies this spring and the germination rate was excellent. I’ll be planting them in my garden this weekend. Here’s a link about GMO plants. croplife.ca/field-notes-gmo-foods/

I seeded first and then planted my three four kind of Tomato and now I’m on a flowering stages...everything is going great even if I live in Vancouver, west Canada, so as you immagine...lots of rain and less sun, but when sun is out...it’s really hot. So I hope it will be a nice and fruitful Tomato harvesting season. I live in a little house with a little Gardening section and now there’s really a Tomato forest with something like 25/30 plants....NOW it comes the Q....I DO NOT NOTICED IN THE PACKAGE AND WROTE DOWN if these plants are Determinate or Indeterminates Plants...:-((((( Frantic Moment.... Can't wait 'till I finish my bedding to try your system. The rain has put a damper on my gardening. Take care of the headache. I once suffered migraines and a physical therapist took care of them with specific pressure massage.
Your trellis idea is awesome! I built mine in about an hour. I ended up ordering 24-ply cotton butcher’s twine to replace the natural twine I had installed. Oops. Didn’t know natural twine would rot so fast. Good tip. Let’s hope the butchers twine will work. I love the way you prune. Who needs sheers? A green thumb is all you need. Thanks for sharing. My garden is growing much better after seeing your channel.
I have used so much of your advice for my first season growing from seed. I am learning so much from you. Keep up the great work. I love the fact that you are straight to the point and very clear about it. Stay safe 🙏
Thank you. A great explanation of how to recognise the main stem of a plant that has 'split'. So useful to me. I usually grow determinate tomatoes but this year chose to try beefsteak toms which are indeterminate. Not being used to growing them, I was surprised how quickly the side shoots grow and ended up with a split stem on a couple of plants and deliberated for ages which stem to remove. Thank you again. Just ordered my clips and twine. Loved the video. I did over prune my plants, but they seem to be rebounding 😊😬. Thank-you for your hard work. It made sense and your facial expressions were priceless, lol 🤣😂.
Fertile Homestead me too. Got my twine and clips. Now if it would warm up. Boise supposed to be warm enough to plant starting Monday May 25. Fingers crossed 🤞
Brill video and lots of useful, sensible advice. I consider myself an experienced and knowledgable gardener but your videos have helped me improve which is great - thank you. Have built the 8ft trellis and this year used both the plastic clips and twine to cordon the indeterminate vines for this season. Pruned as advised and have achieved my best crop ever of healthy, disease free Toms. Really happy :)
I just found your video and you do a great job describing this trellis system. I have seen this commercial system on videos and it looks awesome! I'm just getting my garden going again (I know I'm very late, but it has been 3 years since I gardened last we had to build my garden this year) I was going to do the string trellis like toy but now I would love to get these hooks! I'm excited!
Hey Brian, it's Brian from Australia, I use when tying tomato stems to stakes, panty hose, you lay the panty hose on a flat surface and cut horizontal strips, kinda like calamari rings, about 1- 2 cms wide, these streach incredibly and don't hurt the stems and you get maybe 30 or 40 per panty hose, good value and you are recycling a throw away item. Cheers, oh, great site mate, have learned heaps from your videos.
Thanks so much Brian. I have a very small space to garden so I have my tomatoes in five gallon buckets. This video was very helpful. You try to make the instructions very clear. Really appreciate that. May God continue to bless you Brian.🥰
I started using this technique last year and sooo wish I had your video to walk me through it! Also I had some of those armpit suckers get big and I put them in water like you mentioned and gave them away to friends. Anyway keep the videos coming. Glad you have tamed the migraine!
Will definitely look fwd to continue this video on trellising.. I am very visual, and can easily follow once I see how it's done.. lol.. got long growing season like you, and plenty of indeterminate tonatoes.. I hope I don't have to do that with my determinates. Stay blessed, keep safe and healthy.. God bless you and ur family..
Does this work for tomatoes in pots too? Or they won’t grow that tall in pots? Also how deep is your garden bed for those tomatoes ? I have indeterminate cherry, a few in pots and a few in a garden bed. And one more question - what do you suggest to plant along/near tomatoes? I saw some basil there but what else would you suggest ? Thank you!
I am a new gardener at the age of 69. I have watched many of your tomato videos and I am planting 2,000 heirloom tomatoes. I have been working on the infrastructure since Sept of 2020. I have the fence post trellis system in with the 1/2 inch electrical pipe. I have 7 rows 175 feet long. I saw the hooks and found the best price for them in bulk at Johnny Seeds. I was going to buy 2,000 and wrap them with 30 feet of twine until I thought of an idea I hope works, I decided to wrap two sets of twine on each hook so I could take the plant from one side of the row and also the other side up towards the middle so that I would only need to buy and wrap 1,000 hooks. It has taken 25 hours to wrap the twine but that is half the time and cost. I tie the twine at the top of the hook and then wrap 30 feet of double twine and then I use one of the clips you showed to hold both lines to the hook. I would like to show you some photos or video of what I am doing but not sure how to get them to you. By the way I was having trouble with how to hook the hooks to the 1/2 inch pipe and came up with a no cost way to solve it. When you buy the fence posts they come with wire clips to hold the fence in place, I asked for 1,000 of them from the Tractor Supply and they had many to give me. They can go over the pipe and you can bend them in place to hold the hooks with the twine.
I would truly like to thank you for sharing your knowledge and your wonderful personality. You help me believe I can grow a garden, lol first time here at age 50 so thank you, what an amazing person you are!
I hope you are well very soon. Migraines are AWFUL!! Great growing tips and growing clean. I don’t think I have done much pruning from the ground up the stem; I will do that this year. Thanks so much. Take care. Blessings
I started watching your channel in March when I the pandemic hit. I am trying a bunch of your ideas in my garden...recently built a tomato trellis. My climate is very wet; I'm hoping it helps with diseases.
I'm taking this summer time to learn all about Tomatoes 🍅, 🥒,🫑, 🥦, 🥕 of course my favorite 🍓berry plants 😋! We have never pruned our veggies or Strawberry 🍓 plants. We use Miracle Grow for one! If that tells you anything 😆 🤦♀️🤷♀️! I want to change that asap! Like next March! We are going to redo our beds and start with a fresh new start! I want to learn as much as I can! I have learned alot so fast watching ur video's! You are so smart 🤓 and well educated. Our plants growing n break off, fall over and touch the ground. We tie them up or stake them up against the fence and they will grow up along the fencing and they take off n give off great fruit bit this year its sp hott and dry. We can't keep them feed enough. Plants are small and struggling this year. We want to change this! I want to enjoy a tomato 🍅 sandwich this year! Love a tomato 🍅 sandwich with Duke's mayonnaise, salt 🧂 and pepper!! Yummy 😋!!
I have a shorter growing season in the Northeast and I have my garden completely screened in to keep all animals out. What I do is use party ribbon to secure my plants and connect it directly to the screening above it. The ribbon is extremely strong , doesn’t hurt the plants and is an excellent conductor of static electricity.
Thanks liked what you said. Hoping your feeling better. Got my chickens today. There so cute. Ones a bully and one is so friendly the other four are just so cute. Should be moving next month so I can start some kind of garden. Feel better
Thanks so much for this video!! My tomato last year turned into a giant bush and ate half my garden then got infected with spider mites. Now this year I have a unfold tomato that was still young enough to prune and since I don’t have a trellis set up I’m going to try to just train it up 2 stacked tomato cages while pruning it as I grows up :)
I just saw this video, it's great. So much info I needed. You mentioned "topping" tomatoes. How do you do that? I had 4 plants that were 8' then canopied over each other making it difficult to deal with the tomatoes. TY for all of your wisdom, experience, and taking time to share so much with people. I am getting ready to watch the video about your health, I am hoping all is well with you! Blessings!!!
Hi Brian, I've been pruning along and today I did the first aspirin and baking soda spray. Also planted some dwarf tomatoes I bought and am excited to see how they do! Thanks!
I'm still trying to catch up with all your videos. It really inspires me to better. I appreciate your time and knowledge. I hope you are having a great day
Than you so much for sharing your knowledge Brian, I have been worrying about this particular problem as I haven’t had a clue. Much clearer now. You mentioned that you had been having health problems, so sorry to hear this, hope things go well for you.
Thank you so much for this video! Considering I never really figured out if I had determinate or indeterminate plants, novice here as you know, I decided to hold out for trellis your style to next year. That said, we did place cattle panels to tie the plants up to in order to give them support of some kind. I'll do better next year. I now understand more fully about what to prune and what not to prune. Thank you so much! Something about the way you explain things that I just simply understand so very well. I'm guessing it is a high intellect symbiosis we have. 🤣
Experimenting with the best tomato pruning for 19 years in San Diego, growing on steep slope. 4’x 8’ steel mesh from HD (used for concrete) - sits in between two stakes vertically, 20” above ground. Clips. Let grow first 2 shoots of each tomato plant = three trunks tomato plants. Next 2-3 shoots let root in water - future plants. All the next shoots on three stems let grow to the first bloom, than cut tips off. So far this gives me the best crop. I do not prune cherry tomato.
Another great video Brian. Side note... If your migraines continue please search the interwebs for one of Dr. Sarno's books. In one of his books, the mindbody prescription, he talks about goodism. I think his findings will resonate with you. I put off reading his book for years, dismissing the importance of the mind body connection. Long story short (sort of) reading his book completely eliminated my migraines for good. Hope all is well, just wanted to share if not.
Regarding the landscape stakes, I simply took my metal hangers from the cleaners clipped off the top hook area cut the other one and half and had two wonderful anchors.
Thanks so much (again) ! It was super clear this time as well about the upper bracket switch-over, no worries. I haven't found them over here yet, unfortunately, but will keep looking. I still need to build my trellis structure... Btw, if you need any help with French, please don't hesitate. I'm a Californian too, just a lifer over here, 30 odd years ;) Anywho, thanks again
Another great video (as always)! Hopefully the headaches are being kept at bay, and that you and Emily are enjoying a beautiful anniversary! Congratulations to a beautiful couple! Thanks for sharing your lives with us.
Thank you so much. I'm new to gardening. i have several hydroponic gardens, and I've been trying to figure out how to prune my tomato plants for months.
Thanks. I have 2 indeterminate plants and a ladder between. It’s end of May n they are tall. I think I will have to adjust my big pots and maybe begin wrapping the tomato plants around the ladder. Sounds funny....but hey, if it works.....that will be great. Also I pruned off the lower leafy branches. I enjoyed your video....and other ones that u have offered. Ahna/Atlanta area
If your goal is bigger tomatoes your strategy is spot on. IF you are a canner and want a ton of tomatoes a prune for the first part of the season to get them off the ground and pull the suckers but after a little pruning early on I then let them go for it
I absolutely love this video. Thank you so much for explaining . . . and yes . . . you explained the rounding of the tomato vine as it grows very well.
Thanks loads for the super focused recap on pruning, trellising, and managing the twine! I am still working out a substitute trellis option for my unusual space, but I think I am close!! Crossing my fingers that it works!! 🤞 Glad you feel better!
@@jeremymaccarthy1180 ... Hi, Jeremy, thanks for your interest. I have a concrete slab and am using containers, so I don't have wooden frames to attach the trellis. I also have a commitment to DIY, and at my age, I am a little less of a superwoman than I was a few decades ago. 😉 We also have the occasional hurricane and nor'easter winds, so stability is a big issue. All that said, I enjoy a challenge and hope to be able to solve the problem before too long.
@@jeremymaccarthy1180 Hi Jeremy. A quick update. I have arranged 6 of my container tomato plants in 2 rows of 3 - it simulates a 2-1/2 x 4 foot bed. Each container has 3 bamboo canes tied near the top like a wigwam. To brace them at the top, there is a piece of cane that spans all three. To further brace them, I secured a cane at an angle across all three going bottom to top on one side and repeated that on the other side in the opposite direction. I am using heavy duty S hooks to hold the twine in the top of the wigwam. I should be able to wrap the cordons as they lengthen. Wish me luck!
Unfortunately had some nice beefy type tomatoes donated and not entirely sure what type they are. But they were delicious so I used one to seed. Currently at 8 healthy young plants and I've been caring for em primarily off your videos. Also using a similar trellis design for a bed I made! Thanks and take care!
@Brian At the price point you’re selling the tomato hooks you should include the inexpensive piece of wire to hold the plant down at the bottom. I mean this constructively as I do support your channel and livelihood. I’m looking forward to a large order of tomato hooks now. Thank you for everything you do.

I have come across your video at the right time. I want to give a try. Thanks. You've got a new subscriber.
This is a great video. You do a great job of explaining everything. Thank you for posting this
Your videos are phenomenal! I wish we had more footage from far back showing the whole picture
Yes, makes sense! Thank you!❤️
I'm taking this summer time to learn all about Tomatoes 🍅, 🥒,🫑, 🥦, 🥕 of course my favorite 🍓berry plants 😋!
Brian, thank you once again. I am sorry you are having more health issues. You are in my prayers --Ray Sussex NJ USA
Thank you ❤
Great idea brother. We just made the trellis for the first time and put those hooks. Love it ❤. Thanks so much brother 🙏
I meant sungold not unfold lol
GREAT VIDEO MAN! Glad your back in your element and looking happy!
I'm all in for the tomatoe hooks
They're back in stock! Www.nextlevelgardening.tv/shop
Coat hangers metal ones are a great for making staples
You are the best. I want to thank you so much for all you've taught me. I just love gardening. ❤️
Aww. Thank you! So glad to hear you love it!
Thanks Brian. I have been feeding my tomato branches to my chix. Now I will root some of the branches. Great hint.
Regarding the landscape stakes, I simply took my metal hangers from the cleaners clipped off the top hook area cut the other one and half and had two wonderful anchors.
Glad your feeling better!! 👍🏻 always putting great videos. 🌱🌱
Thank you!
Great tutorial & will watch again in case I missed anything- Thanks Heaps. Cheers Denise - Australia
Thank you 🙂
I would have liked to see what your trellis looked like when you kept moving the washer to the , “next” hook.
Gotta say. Your pruning looks insane!! But then I've never had a good crop. Learned lots!! Scary stuff, but lots!
Usually you can prune about 30% off the tomato plant without damaging them!
You have basic common sense, congratulations 🙏🙏. Keep it up 👍
Wow, I didn’t know you could propagate the sucker in water, good to know! You are funny at the beginning 😁
Thank you Rose. Headaches are still here but diminishing. ❤
Thank you so much. I'm new to gardening. i have several hydroponic gardens, and I've been trying to figure out how to prune my tomato plants for months.
Yes, it makes sense what you're saying about moving the hook as the plant grows!
You made perfect since great job
Thank You for sharing your knowledge
I loved your video.
Enjoyed every moment - it's exactly what happens to us. Full of good information. Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial. Challenge is, I live in the tropics with harsh climatic conditions. Kindly do a video to help out. More Grace.
Pretty nicely explained
Thanks Brian hope you are feeling better. Your vids are very informative and well presented . God bless you and your family
Great video. Explanations are so much clearer than others I've watched. Thank you SO much !!!
thanks man, i learned so much from your video . awesome
Thanks for the video. Its really helped me
Bailing twine works really well and is large enough not to harm the plant. Reusable for several seasons.
Great tips!! Thanks.
Just happy to see a smile on your face, hope things are getting better and you can just spend time with the family and garden. Take care!
Brilliant Video! Lots of easy to understand information, presented in such a pleasant manner! Thank you! ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
Thank you Fiona❤☘
Ty so much for these tips
If your goal is bigger tomatoes your strategy is spot on. IF you are a canner and want a ton of tomatoes a prune for the first part of the season to get them off the ground and pull the suckers but after a little pruning early on I then let them go for it
I absolutely love this video. Thank you so much for explaining . . . and yes . . . you explained the rounding of the tomato vine as it grows very well.
when you talkeed about moving the top and making the longer bottom, that blew my mind a little. i was wondering what to do when they get to tall.
So nice to hear your voice. Continue to stay healthy for us. I need my hooks for my trellis
Thanks loads for the super focused recap on pruning, trellising, and managing the twine! I am still working out a substitute trellis option for my unusual space, but I think I am close!! Crossing my fingers that it works!! 🤞 Glad you feel better!
What kind of weird space do you have?
@@jeremymaccarthy1180 ... Hi, Jeremy, thanks for your interest. I have a concrete slab and am using containers, so I don't have wooden frames to attach the trellis. I also have a commitment to DIY, and at my age, I am a little less of a superwoman than I was a few decades ago. 😉 We also have the occasional hurricane and nor'easter winds, so stability is a big issue. All that said, I enjoy a challenge and hope to be able to solve the problem before too long.
@@jeremymaccarthy1180
Hi Jeremy.
@@juneritchie2498 how did it work out?
@@veraw2121 ... I was a bit surprised that it actually worked out pretty well. Thanks for asking.
Thank you for your information!! Take your time you're doing great!! Your health is important!! 💖
Thank you for sharing! I feel confident i can now grow successful tomato plants this year. Great video
Always stay healthy and safe.
You always have useful information for us. Thank you
Unfortunately had some nice beefy type tomatoes donated and not entirely sure what type they are. But they were delicious so I used one to seed. Currently at 8 healthy young plants and I've been caring for em primarily off your videos. Also using a similar trellis design for a bed I made! Thanks and take care!
Just found your channel 3 weeks ago...love it! I have been binge watching the old episodes.🥴
@Brian
At the price point you’re selling the tomato hooks you should include the inexpensive piece of wire to hold the plant down at the bottom. I mean this constructively as I do support your channel and livelihood. I’m looking forward to a large order of tomato hooks now. Thank you for everything you do.
Hey .
Everyone Moniee-Mon, is listening thanks for the info vedios keep doing what'cha do best God bless ya !.😇💞💝💯
Thanks for the informative video. I’ll be pruning my ‘maters tomorrow, hope I remember everything from this tutorial. Thanks!
Just bring your cell phone or iPad out to the garden and watched video while your pruning
That's probably what I'm going to do
Love your videos. Glad you are feeling better. I was looking for your new videos. Thank you for your time.
